if im wrong let me know but i think the current jumps from the material into the electrode id also recommend a cup 12 or something of that size for welding stainless and your gas pressure matters alot too little and the tungsten and the stainless will oxidise as you mentioned and too much can create a vacuum at the cup which drags in oxygen. hope this helps (in no way is this a hate comment just trying to help :) )
