Thank you for showing us" how to " do it, also gave me ideas to make a similar plaques for the Sheriff's dept. which I volunteer. Also I wanted to say Thank you for your service and and God to protect your son.
I'm from St Tammany as well, PawPaw! Very cool! Someone linked one of your videos on reddit. The one describing how to divide a board into however many spaces you want! Super cool technique! You're the man!
Thank you very much. I do not know which brand this bit is that I am using. I use many different ones. Some come from Inventables while others come from the big box stores.
Excellent! I very new to the CNC world and its because of Easel that I can actually do anything right now. I need to learn Carbide though as I have ordered a Shapeoko. I currently own a Redsail RS 4040.
First off, congratulations to your son on his promotion! I just wanted to say thank you for this video! I've been attempting for two days now to do a two step cut and the software kept cutting the final shape out with the detail bit causing it to snap and wreck my project. It never occurred to me to create a third step.
Thanks paw paw...the flooding technique is very messy and requires a lot of paint but it does create great results if done properly....i ended up staining first then carve text but lots of tear out so i simply ran snadpaper on letters and got,rid of the messy edges....i then restained and used clear acrylc spray....then flooded the letters black....and wiped off with damp cloth...let dry and the another clear coat....very very messy....but turned out very nice....
I have actually asked Inventables to do just that. I would like to have another XCarve to build step by step and set it up from the very beginning. They said , "NO" I am limited as to how much you can do with the machine up and running. I am not going to break down this one just to do video on putting it together. I like the idea. I also asked Shapeoko CNC to do the same comparison with their machine and the XCarve. They did not respond to my request.
Thank you very much. If anything I am going to make the signs larger. The detail is very very small. I also plan on experimenting with PVC to see if it cuts cleaner than the wood. I would like to prevent the tear out.
I just wanted to say thanks for making these Xcarve videos, your tips and tricks have definitely helped me in figuring out some of the nuances of using the machine. Keep up the good work!
Nice job, I have been doing something similar. I spray two coats of polyurethane let dry then carve. I then fill the letters with acyrlic water based paint and wipe off excess. Be very careful to sand the surface to eliminate any open grain. This works but still needs tweaking as paint will get in grains and then have to be sanded off.
These cnc router videos keep coming up probably because I watched a bunch of the pawpaws fox alien videos. I'm likin that fox alien and you keep twisting my arm to buy one. Great videos. 👍👍
I am currently using easel and sansmart CNC. I'm looking in a new CNC machine and have a budget for about $3000. I was looking at Vcarve but was wondering if you might suggest others to look at? thx
There are many great machines in that price range. The XCarve is an excellent choice. The upgrade kit makes it even better. Here is an affiliate link to explore the XCarve: X-Carve: www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=pawpawworkshop The CNC4NEWBIE is another great choice. A lot of people talk about the Openbuild
Yes, just hit carve again. You can also lower the depth by .005 to do a clearing path or use whatever depth you wish. If you are using a vbit and if you have reached the maximum of the geometry then it will not go any deeper. You can trick the machine by using the probe then raise the material with index cards. Be careful not to move your project.
Hey pawpaw i need to do similar....but instead of gold i need mine stained...should stain and poly wood then carve out detail and then flood paint and wipe off ? Or carve first then stain and poly and then flood paint and remove? Or doesnt matter?
Seal the wood with several coats of sealer first, then carve. That will help with the tear out. Carve it letters are darker that stain. With the fine detail I would stain next, then seal the stain, then flood with paint. Wipe off and seal. This sounds like a lot but it really goes fairly quickly and should give you excellent results. Good luck. As you may have noticed in the videos that I do my painting techniques varies with the project.
I'm fairly new to this cnc stuff. I have a used older model x carve. I'm trying to learn a 2 stage carve. I don't have easel pro or v carve. How do I set my different bits like you did for this. The file I'm trying needs a 1/8" clearing bit and then a 60 degree v bit. I also want to do a thru cut with the 1/8" bit, but every time I try this it sets it to the v bit. Can I tell easel what bit to use for each path? HELP! My first try with a 2 stage, when I changed bits something happened and my Y was a half inch off.
In GRBL make sure that $1=255. That will lock the stepper motors to allow you to change bits and help prevent any movement. Now for the fun part. If you look at this video you see two stage carving on one workpiece and the cutout is on a second workpiece. In the top right hand corner you can choose your bit for both the roughing pass and the detail pass. Once you finish that process move to the second workpiece and do the cutout. I have numerous videos on using this technique. Hopefully this helps. If the y axis was a half inch off I would say that during the bit changed the gantry moved on the y axis. Sometimes you don't even notice it. Yes, I have done that also.
So been looking at a Carve but I am wondering, does it only make straight cuts downward or does this smooth edges/round off edges if your design calls for it?
watched several shows one question is my son is a sheriff too and now a capt i found the badge on etsy and is detailed correct for state but it is slt file how would be best way to get it over to in cnc for G code
You want to get the highest resolution image that you can get. Then check your machine. If the lines were not straight then you may need to calibrate your machine. Thank you very much.
That is a 3/4" dado bit. It cuts completely flat. You can get these from the big box stores. You can also get planning bits from Amazon and Whiteside as well as Tools Today.
What bits did you use? I'm going to attempt a LVMPD Badge in the near future, and wondering what I need in my arsenal of bits. Just getting into the cnc world
With v carve pro you can use UGS (Universal GCode Sender) It's free. Also Picsender will work. I have seen Mach 3 and know that it should work as well. You need to choose the correct post processor in VCarve Pro.
I have an extremely intricate piece that I have carved out. 18 inches in diameter. I am half tempted to do this method of painting, but I would like to see the video you referenced in which you start painting the background first and then move up to the foreground. Do you remember what the name of that video was?
If using two stage carving, I use a clearing bit first such as a 1/8" bit, then change to the v bit. Yes, I do re-probe to set the height. To cut the project out, I setup a different work piece in Easel and cut it out as if it was a new project. Thank you for your question.
It took a lot of work to finally get it to look good. I started with an image from the sheriff department. It was not the best quality. Took the image into Inkscape and converted it to a SVG file. Also made adjustments to some of the poor quality graphics. Brought it into Easel. The text was terrible. Ungrouped everything and deleted all the text. Put in new text using basic fonts in Easel. Carved this a number of times to get the depth correct. When it was time to engrave on the laser, there was only minor adjustments that needed to be made.
I do sell them for $45 plus shipping. I laser them instead of the carving. I can get much more detail with the laser. I can also put the "Lieutenant" on the badge also. Email me at pawpawsworkshop411@gmail.com

The black paint used for this project is acrylic black paint that I get for about $.50 a bottle at Walmart, hobby lobby or michaels.

Better a little mess rather than trying to hand paint.
Would love for you to do a video talking about your whole CnC setup - tools, software, etc. Great video by the way

Fantastic
Why a downcut bit? Why not an upcut? I would think the up cuts bottom profile would give a cleaner cut.
Thanks

Downcut produces cleaner cuts in wood.

So been looking at a Carve but I am wondering, does it only make straight cuts downward or does this smooth edges/round off edges if your design calls for it?
It is capable to doing full 3d carvings. It all depends on the software that you are using. Yes, it can do all the list things.

Wow small world, I'm over in Ponchatoula
Yes, it is a very small world.
Awesome project. I tried making a similar one but the lines weren’t straight. I think it’s the image I’m using. Any advice?

what is this red planning tool? where can you look for it?

How do you change the bits during carving and keep the router from moving ? Thanks

@@PawPawsWorkShop sorry but I do not know what a GRBL is ?
@@PawPawsWorkShop I just looked at the advanced grbl screen all mi ne are at 0 do i need to down load some I have been carving over a year. help
Pawpaw...how do you decide between running a 60 vs a 90 deg vbit? Also on text in easel how do you determine good looking depth with v bits?
All by appearance. I first look at the preview. Often I will do a test carve and determine which looks the best.
What bits did you use? I'm going to attempt a LVMPD Badge in the near future, and wondering what I need in my arsenal of bits. Just getting into the cnc world
I used a 60 degree v bit to carve the badge and a 1/8" straight bit to cut it out.

Great work! What would you charge for this piece? I have been carving for a year now and still have a difficult time pricing out my projects . . .
I do these with the laser to get the extra fine detail and I usually sell them for $45
@@PawPawsWorkShop thank you! That's cheep for such a good looking product! I would easily pay $65 for something like this! You do great work
Thank you very much.
What other software is available that will control the x-carb I have b carve and Mach 3 haven't figured out how to set them up to run the machine yet
X carve v carve pro
With v carve pro you can use UGS (Universal GCode Sender) It's free. Also Picsender will work. I have seen Mach 3 and know that it should work as well. You need to choose the correct post processor in VCarve Pro.
Congratulations to you and your son on his promotion!
Thank you very much.
What do you use to seal the wood before painting?
I most often use shellac
What depth to you go to get the detail. ?
The vbit will only go as deep as the geometry allows. When the edge of the bit touches the edge of the design it will not go any deeper
did easel do away with the 4 free days of pro? Or do you need to access it in another way beside the browser?

what are the typical bits you use the most
Down cut bits 1/32,1/16, 1/8 along with the vbits 60 and 90 degree are the most common
Can you show how to get the vector for that image? I have a badge I'd like to do but don't know where to start
