- Dead & Company's special guest Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame takes vocals and lead guitar on "Black Muddy River." This Grateful Dead cover was previously performed by Vernon and Bruce Hornsby at the Eaux Claires Festival all-star "Day of the Dead" performance in 2016.
Recorded live at Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI on Saturday June 23, 2018 during the Dead & Company's Summer Tour 2018.
I’m glad to say I was there. Huge Dead fan. Huge Vernon fan. It was a really sweet spot in the show. Dead and Co brought this Wisconsin boy in to sit in, that is what it’s all about folks.
I thought he was from Minnesota
He’s from Eau Claire Wi. i.pinimg.com/originals/1f/f6/4b/1ff64b6fdf0b6f7ecff6f52761777dfc.jpg
It's all about hearing a good performance and inviting guests up that contribute to the show. Sorry but this guy butchered BMR, maybe if he didn't sing it falsetto and played a better solo you wouldnt be hearing soooo much negative feedback. He wasn't that great on the next two songs either, and without Johns help his solo in Bird Song would have fell flat and felt dull as well
Jamie Montour you need to acquire some taste.
Hahah i don’t get the bitterness here it’s crazy to me
Brad Koehler ....what don’t you understand?
damon818 .....yeah, I’m pretty forgiving of a lot of what D and C does. That BMR though, was an abomination.
Are there really people here that have never heard of Bon Iver? He just sold out the old Bradly Center in Milwaukee. Has won Grammys. You might want to branch out folks. This was truly a special moment. And even if you had no idea who the guy was, this version is just beautiful.
This is hot garbage
The worst, possibly worse than Phil's vocals!
I liked it. I get it's not how the OG Dead would play it, but it was a cool version. Justin likes to sing falsetto so that's why he kept doing it, kind of a signature thing. Guy's just bringing a new take on a great song, variety is the spice of life after all. It was cool, thumbs up.
Something tells me JV isn’t accustomed to singing/performing dosed.
The reaction of the crowd when this happened was instant rejection. I remember sitting on the hill when it happened.....collectively everyone around me went, "who the hell is that? what is that?"
Deadheads are a narrowheaded bunch, stark contrast with the image associated with the band.
It wasnt a good performance
@@buldog190 It's probably too good for your ability to appreciate.
@@roderickbalt8993 no it was just bad. Quit sucking this guy off. He had no business being there.
@@buldog190 ok boomer
I don’t like to criticize musicians, because this guy is very talented - I’ll just say that some people should never sing Dead songs. Ever. Ever again.
That's how I feel about Mayer. :/
It was perfect, the way it should be, actually. Thank goodness for Johnny. I'm a huge Dead fan from my college days in the 90s when it get chopped and listen to some live show that was occasionally played on radio. Years later, at Wrigley, I saw Dead and Co, not knowing that John Mayer was part of band. No preconceived notions about him.and do you know what? Dude rocks! Total force for American Folk, such is the Dead, as he knows how important the Dead is to the culture of the past what seventy years. Yea, carry on Johnny!
A 4 effort. I'd love to hear anyone talking shit get on stage and do better...with that said...yeah never ever do this again.
Huge Deadhead and also a massive JV fan. I can understand how people that don't/haven't listened to Bon Iver would be confounded by this; however, as a WI native and with JV being one, this was one of the most magical guest appearances and collisions of sonic worlds that I have ever experienced.
Problem was that it sounded horrible though, and had gone down to be the worst 3 songs ever performed at a D&C show. His solos weren't even inspiring. His solo on Bird Song was terrible and Mayer had to save him. I guess since it was a local some people had a bias, but objectively his performance was awful. If he had been John Doe from whereeverthefuck USA I'm sure you would have thought it sounded horrible.
They pulled this stunt to show John skeptics that he is superior at the helm
I don’t mind the falsetto but I wish he’d sing it like he did on the day of the dead album... why is everyone hating so much? Lol
Imagine being a fan of a band that was the symbol of outside the box thinking and being so narrowminded to dislike everything that is not Jerry Garcia in 1979.
I know a lot of heads didn’t like this, but his falsetto was a nice little touch. Justin loves the dead, so it was great seeing him play with the boys.
Yeah, not a fan of that voice.
This shits great
justin number one
Haha
who let Barry Gibb up there
lol
you fuckers better watch this and recognize: ua-cam.com/video/zjirgvfpK1o/v-deo.html
with love,
a long time deadhead
Genius!
The ones who do not like this performance are all fools
I have a feeling he will never be invited back. Someone correct me if I am wrong please.
Last night was an amazing performance.....except this guy. Lets just remember that Althea. You can tell johnny isnt thrilled
That Althea was amazing!
Lol yeah that voice... and Dammit I always miss Althea, I hope you all loved it... one day... one day...
John's just like wtfff lol
As horrific of a clusterfuck that this head-on train collision is... It actually makes Donna Jean’s God forsaken, ear bleeding caterwaul at the end of Playin’ In The Band all of those years seem almost not so bad. Almost. Not THAT bad. And man, THAT is saying something😂
Dead sounded best with Donna. Hands down.
I agree, but I never understood why nobody asked her to cut of that vocal in Playing in the Band. I believe I've only heard a few recordings where it sounded OK
Vernon's voice during the verses is horrible and it's not like that during the chorus which shows its a choice of range
I was there, and I thought it was fine then and I think it’s fine now. I also understand that my opinion, or anyone else’s for that matter, means nothing to any of the guys on stage. They’re not doing it for me, or you, or the people next to you, they’re doing it for the music, as they always have. And I’ll add that anyone bitching about this performance isn’t a true deadhead. We’re about inclusion, not critique. I had a good time at Alpine and I bet Justin Vernon did too and that’s pretty damn great.
David Hoaglund you probably had to much to fast.
jeffewers your rite, eye was their too knights, sew its possible aye had to much on at least won of them.
I'm sure it was better in person, as all concerts are, but this was a poor rendition of BMR and his guitar work was poor as well during Bird Song. Your opinion that they aren't doing it for us but for the music is a lame excuse; as is saying you're not a Deadhead if you can't appreciate a guest singer butchering an amazing song. Sorry but they perform for us as well as for the music. Do you think they don't care if they put on a good show? Of course they want to play well for us. I'm sure this guest also was hoping to put on a good performance but he didn't get there. Sure he had his local following, but anybody objectively listening to performance would tell you it sounded bad. You can be a Deadhead and still critique some guest performer, or the band for that matter.
@@chrispruiett9370 But that's the irony of deadheads, they're complete narrowminds that live in the past. Jerry is dead, he is never coming back.
Non-musicians didn't like this
Must have to like both Dead & Co and Bon Iver to appreciate this. Thought it was great! Still prefer a good JM version, but this is like old Bon Iver meets the Dead. Everyone else on the lawn at Alpine seemed to enjoy Wisconsin's native son playing with Bobby Weir.
Jerry would be rolling in the earth over this rendition. Whoa, whoa, how does that song go ? Not like that !
If he sang in the octave he used during the chorus it would have been nice. That falsetto was meh.
YIKES
man his non falsetto voice is great, why does he do that?
He was too high
Okay, coming back to this a while later: the last two minutes, just after he drops the falsetto, are pretty freakin' sweet, I think.
horrible
Jeebus, this sucks.
Joe Russo's Almost Dead > Dead & Co
I like it. Open your minds people!
Cheryl Lynn ....back to the kitchen Cheryl Lynn
Madeline Knorr .....if you came to UA-cam for classy, I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news for you........
@@randyhospodar8864 No need for some class. But have some basic human decency and dont be a sexist prick.
@@randyhospodar8864 Back to the crackpipe randy
I would rather have a cheese grater taken to my taint then to EVER hear this version again.
🤯
Let this song rest with Jerry. Just leave it alone.
I feel bad for this guy! we're all supposed to be kind shit.. it wasn't the best black muddy river I'm sure bro know it
Knows^
so bad I thought they were Punkin' the audience.
I love both but Vernom > Mayer
Santiago de Freitas Martins .......that’s just silly
Randy Hospodar Just making dead heads angrier
Santiago de Freitas Martins ........I’m not sure what a deadhead is.
It is the name they give Grateful Dead fanbase.
Just kidding by the way, but I think Grateful Dead fans tend to be a bit radicals. Bon Iver differs from the Dead, it's not bad though, it is out of the bubble. I enjoy both, and JOhn Mayer as well.
Why?...this Vernon person derailed the whole nights performance.
Is that Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder? Not good..
Les Grossman calling another man Les Grossman, thats rich. Thats a grammy winning artist you nitwit.
JV ~ Junior Varsity. The shoe is just too big for him to fill. It just proves how great a job JM is doing !
Paul Lee Go Johnny Go!!
I love justin vernon. And I love this song.
Andrew Reed I cannot share your laughter ship of fools.
Andrew Reed really bad drugs, that’s what be wrong w/you.
Legit thought it was a joke...
A piece that doesnt fit the puzzle. Wouldve been really nice to hear john sing this one and hear oteil do a song.
Live and learn.
Beautiful solo tho
Who the hell is Justin Vernon anyway?
Bon Iver
Who stepped on my cat's tail?
i didnt know justin vernon was casted for One flew over the coo coo's nest!
Garcia has officially rolled over in his grave.
David Jacuk My words exactly my friend.
I was at both shows and the first night was amazing and 2nd night was so so... This was the low point in the show and we could not beleive it...
Damn, I forgot how insanely good this was. Thanks again, Justin, for your contributions to the GD universe. Beautiful.
Not big on the falsetto, but a serviceable version nontheless... jesus 'heads can be closeminded..
Kyle Sullivan closed minded? That was absolutely horrible and embarrassing.
Just cancelled my plans for Shoreline. This shitshow is washed up
Meh... I''m never going to watch this video again, but also it's not as terrible as folks are making it out to be....cept that fucking falsetto. I don't think he will be invited back though lol, and I am fine with that.
lol cool dude, more room on the lawn then.
It's not about being closed minded. I would expect veteran musicians to play with what's left of the Dead. I would rather listen to our local Deadhead band than this. Here's their first attempt at The Other One from my last party.
ua-cam.com/video/THhbngnJQYc/v-deo.html
The 2016 version with Bruce Hornsby was fine in my opinion, the falsetto wasn't needed in this version..
FotD he was out of sync/time, then Birdsong which was way better... Honest no negativity based opinions..
Deadheads can be so brain damaged sometimes. Too much acid has made them go goofy. This is sweet stuff. Deadheads are too judgemental to recognize something different or interesting. Jerry would have dug this.
Charles Williams your out of your mind
just like when Steve Miller sat in with the GD at RFK and Jerry kicked him off the stage, pretty sure he would have done the same thing.
Dug a hole for it.
He didn't bother to learn the chords to the easiest dead song ever written. Oteil can't even look at him.
night two at alpine known as the man who dropped the ball
Fans didn't get what they paid for.
I like his guitar but the falsetto has to go.
This isnt right!!! No rehearsal?
That's some scary shit
Risk and failure.
Oh no
God awful. Why in the hell would they choose this guy to play w/them? Very strange...
PC Plummer , because he is a tremendously talented singer and songwriter. Bon Iver is an incredible band , that’s why.
bulldog190 Local talent and he’s performed it with Bruce several times. He was also on the Day of the Dead tribute album. I am huge fan of both bands and thought this was an interesting performance.
stuff this bad makes them all look like liars/posers - learn to keep it real like you did the night before.
Please make it stop
BMR was so awful that I thought the boys were letting a special needs guest onstage with them...like someone dying of cancer or something. I couldn't wrap my head around why they would do something so horrible to us except maybe in such a special needs case. It was the absolute worse thing I have ever seen DeadCo do! Second set got better once JV left.
This is a disgusting comment that belittles individuals with special needs and those suffering from cancer. I have no idea why you feel the need to compare it to those things, except that it's the internet and you can say whatever you want because there are no repercussions. It may have been bad and perhaps you didn't enjoy it, but there are thousands of other ways to compare & talk about this performance without reverting to such elementary & childish complaints.
" They " are trying to make this guy bigger and it did not work....$$$ folks!!!!!
Daveyboy lmao this guy is a Grammy winning artist who sells out stadiums
WHY
holy shit, don't let that guy near another GD song again. And take Mayer with him.
I wish I was dead.
My ears hurt
This is truly the lowest point of the bands career😂
agree totally
One of my favorites, until this guy butchered it.
🙄
Yesterday in an article published in Wisconsin, Justin Vernon admits that he dropped acid before going on stage at this concert. He doesn't include anyone else but himself. That explains his terrible voice, and non-existence of talent. Agree, Black Muddy River was ruined by Justin Vernon. One of my favorite Jerry songs.
As miserable as his own horrible music
Randy Hospodar you have no idea what you are talking about.
banjomusic76 .......I started going to Grateful Dead shows in 1985. I know what this music was, is and could be. That whiney little goof does nothing to improve this music. By suggesting otherwise, you are outing yourself as a know-nothing.
With all respect, your mindset, or attitude, is a Black Muddy River of narrow minded shortsightedness. Maybe you want your better days handed back to you, Pitiful really , listen to mid 80's recorded versions of the song if that's what you need to get bye. Those of us who understand that songs are living , evolving things will embrace new variations while you live in a museum of what once was. The world you knew is gone, and if you died with it I pity you. You are truly left behind and lost. Your love is not for real and has faded away, your lovelight is black as coal, and your black throated negativity has left you feeling like a stranger on desolation row.... sad...sad...sad..
banjomusic76 .....I think that the music provided should be a reasonable facsimile of the music. This is akin to going to see Jay Z, and Barbara Streisand sitting in. If I want to hear Bon Iver, I would go to one of their awful shows .
Seems you died with him. You're living in the past man, wake up!
Terrible in every kind of way. Wow.
Explain to me how it is morally wrong to ingest Lysergic acid diethylamide. I guarantee you can't
