I built a transom out of treated wood for mine, and I mounted a big patio umbrella between front seats on a pivoting swivel mount. It also works great for a sail!
Man, I love this build! Thanks for all of the follow up in the comments, this has been super informative! I'm thinking about copying your build for my sundolphin.
I love this video. Was thinking about doing this to my boat. Making it motorized and more. you just saved me so much time and experimenting and researching. Those wheels are brilliant!
Do you have a documented step by step video? Products used? I missed that if you do. I've been wanting to add just a trolling motor but this is next level thinking. Thanks. Great idea.
I do not have a documented step-by-step video however there is a list of all the products used under the video. I also added hyperlinks so someone could buy them on Amazon.
There is no internal frame for this boat. It’s just two pieces of plastic top and bottom, glued and stapled together. I simply put the wheels where I thought they would fit the best. My first attempt was a major fail because I simply used toggle bolts and silicone, and the boat leaked and took on water. So after that, I literally took the entire boat apart and ended up using three-quarter inch starboard on the inside of the boat and then I ran bolts through the brackets for the wheels then the boat and the starboard material. I used bolts and washers and silicone on all areas and I haven’t had a problem with it since. While the boat was completely apart, I also took that opportunity to run wires on all four sides of the boats for lights and incorporated LED lights on the inside of the boat as well. I also ran wiring for installing the red and green light in front and the white light in the back.

Yes, I literally took the boat completely apart and put three-quarter inch starboard on the inside of the boat and then bolted it through the outside of the boat with silicone on both sides and then used nut washers on the inside of the boat. It’s very sturdy once I did that.
2 years ago yeah, but I’d say rather than splitting the boat open to feed wires through, perhaps cut out an access panel, and feed the wires through via pole, and cut out an exit panel. Measuring, marking, and a steady hand can make the panels nice and clean. Water seal for its lining?
There are subsequent videos in the links are provided below this video that will show you more of a close-up of what it looks like however, I use a combination of rubber washers, metal washers, toggle bolts, and what is called a hanger bracket used for electrical conduit. I also added an entire list of Parts that I bought on Amazon in the description. You can look at this video at two minutes and 36 seconds and pause it to get a better look at it.
Hi John, I enjoyed watching your video and I ordered the wheels for my pedal boat. Did you have to take out every staple to get access to the inside of the hull or just the ones in the rear? After mounting the wheels how did you put the staples back in? Awesome job on your boat!
I ended up taking out every single staple around the entire boat because I also ran wires for lights. I have six lights around the outside perimeter of the boat front and rear running. Lights are also wired through the boat and I also have some LED lights on the inside of the boat, so that was helpful with the wiring to put the boat back together with new staples. I ended up buying a gun for over 300 bucks and I’d be interested in selling it for $100. I only used it for this project so it was pretty arduous and you have to be patient but it’s pretty cool once it’s done.
stop the video at 2:36, and you can see how the bracket is secured to the boat. I used 1/8" toggle bolts and Hanger, Conduit, 1-1/2-Inch EMT / 1-1/4-Inch Rigid/IMC, Steel with Bolt, Size 3 www.amazon.com/dp/B00NLOJ5YE/... Let me know if you have more questions.
Hi John. Nice build! Couple of questions. Firstly, I went with a little 8 foot Sundolphin boat. Similar construction with the halves being stapled together. I understand how you attached the wheels, but I'm very leery of putting holes in the hull. Are you having any water problems and/or did you add drain plugs? I really want permanent wheels and a little bored with having to ratchet strap the ones I made, on and off all the time. Also, I'm not familiar with what starboard is.....other than being the nautical term for "right". Thanks, and again, nice job!
I have had no leaks at all since installing the starboard on the inside of the boat and putting bolts through the material and the boat. Starboard is a plastic that cuts and drills like wood and is often used for marine projects. Here is a link to buy it. a.co/d/73ckRnG There is a drain plug located in the front of the boat and that was factory installed. I used marine silicone between the starboard and the hull. Since this video I also took out the paddle and pedals and simply used marine silicone and small plastic circles to cover the holes inside and out.
That is actually a really good question. The pedals do spin and they do get in the way of your feet. I ended up taking the pedals out completely and sealing the holes. It doesn’t make the boat any faster but it allows you to put your feet anywhere you want in the front.
Awesome pedal boat. Just bought one looking to customize mine. Only hope it comes half as nice lol. Can I ask what kind of screws did you use and did you use a sealant or silicone when adding accessories. I’m curious about that process . New to boating
You can look in the comment section and see a full list of all the products I use. To answer your question more directly are use the combination of bolts, anchor, bolts, and yes, lots of silicone, of course.
curious why so much legal stuff on the boat ? if its under 14 feet and less than a 9.9 hp you shouldnt need all the lights etc etc. ??guess its your local laws, sorry never heard of it for a small craft.
Do you have order info for the wheels you attached? We are on a very small lake and looking for a way to easily transport pedal boat from our lake house to the lake. Can’t leave it docked there overnight as there is common ground between our property and the lake.

Do you have a step by step video on how you did this amazing work my main concern is how did you run the wiring for your navigation lights and how did you seal the holes you made in the back bottom to mount the motor mount
I put rubber washers on each side of the bolts to create a waterproof seal where I mounted the motor. As far as running the wires, I took the boat apart completely, which was a huge project and was an even bigger project putting it back together. It did allow me a fantastic opportunity to simply run the wires anywhere I wanted to under the boat and up through a mounted switch that I can send you a video of in the future. I also added 1/2-inch thick starboard blocks on the inside of the boat to help me properly secure the wheels in the back.
How many people were yelling at you monitor?" Shut off the motor!! What in the hell did you just leave it running? Did you test the battery, and see how long it would run??
Ha! That's awesome! I had a regular marine battery at the time and I just bought a 100 Ah lithium battery. I was out for almost two hours with two people and could have kept going no problem. Even with a regular marine battery and three people I would be out for over an hour with two adults and two kids.

@@johnmiller9709 hey thanks for listening all the products that you bought. Yes please do make an updated video because I think you did it the simplest way that's awesome. Make sure and the new video to tell how many of each item you bought. Some things are obviously only one but some of them I wasn't sure if you need too or maybe more. Also show how you lower the Bimini top and are able to open and close a standard garage door with that thing sitting up against the ceiling. Also does the motor mounts interfere with the ability of the rudder to turn completely in case your battery dies and you really do need the paddle back. Thanks for showing how you did that. I did not know that they even made Parts like that for some of them. Also how long of a motor extension handle you got.

Did you purchase the boat from a store? If so did you use the MSO to get it registered? I'm having rhe hardest time getting it register due to the required info on the MSO
Yes, I bought it from Dick’s Sporting Goods and they completely screwed it up and never gave me the correct information or slip of paper. I needed to get it registered. I ended up having to go to the store three times before I could actually get it registered. The manager and none of the employees knew what the heck they were doing. It was an absolute waste of time and a complete disaster, but I finally got it figured out. I sincerely wish you the best of luck.
Yeah I'm going through hell and high water as well with tractor supply. None of the employee, store manager, even district manager have any clue what to do or provide. I'm going to the DMV for the 3rd time. Hopefully I got all the required paperwork this time. Fingers cross!
The links for the wheels are below. I had to take the boat apart and use 1/2" thick Starboard on the inside of the boat to make it rigid to hold the bolts and I also use marine-grade silicone inside and out. Awesome build hey I was wondering about a question you answered about the wheels and was wanted to know how hard was it to take apart the boat to install the starboard thanks
It was very difficult and it took hours to take the boat apart and put it back together. I had to remove 180 staples each of them by hand with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Once you have the boat apart you can run wiring and add switches and lights and all kinds of great stuff like that in addition to adding the starboard. This is some thing I did that is not in this video at this time. Putting it together is also difficult because I had to buy a staple gun that was strong enough to drive Staples through the plastic of each part of the boat. In addition putting the rubber strip around the outside edge is also difficult because you have to heat it with a heat gun in order to stretch and pull it properly so that it fits around the entire perimeter of the boat.
@@Trucker-ht8dg YES! To me, it was well worth it. I enjoyed doing the work and had a chance to run wires inside the boat. The legally required front and rear lights along with interior blue LED lighting and white lights running along all four sides. In addition, I added a boat switch to operate all the lights.
So the paddle boat that I bought does come with a registration number and a tag located in the back. I would check with your local state water and fishing department.
I used silicone and I also re-stapled the entire haul. I would tell you that it was extremely arduous and painful procedure but I got it done with a lot of patience and persistence. No other vids at this time.

"Legal" so much for the land of the free. Since I've moved here it's more like the land of the permits. Cool conversion though, I was thinking of doing the same but I don't want to pay to register it.
Yes! However, I would call your local registry to be sure. I had to make two trips back to Dick's Sporting Goods because they did not give me the right info I needed to get it registered.
Check your State regulations,in S.C boats with 5 HP motors or less do not need to be registered, others states have various rules which may apply to trolling motors.
The first time I tried to attach the wheels was an epic failure. I tried using toggle bolts and they ripped out easily and filled the boat with water. I then realized I had to take the boat apart and it was not fun doing that. I had to remove over 180 staples after removing the trim. Thank you for the response . I’d like to be able to do that. I have a running project on a Contour Commander paddle boat. It’s a big paddle boat (58”w x 118”l.) I’m in the process of looking for a slow leak. I’ve replaced the bearings for the paddle, and taken apart the steering arm. I used silicone when I put both back together, but I still get some leakage. Problem is that this boat is made out of ABS, and the seam where the deck and hull meet is glued.

Hi Dan, it does not affect it at all. I have since removed the pedal assembly and the rudder assembly and other than it being lighter there is no significance in performance.

I then realized I had to take the boat apart and it was not fun doing that. I had to remove over 180 staples after removing the trim. I placed a rectangular piece of 1/2 inch starboard on the inside of the boat and then ran the bolts that come with the wheels through the wheel brackets of the boat and the starboard on the inside.
Well that is an exorbitant amount of work for a couple of wheels lol I am myself will probably try the strongest adhesive that I can find but yours looks really well done almost factory.
@@chrisdix1390 I agree. It was an insane amount of work but it will never leak now and it incredibly sturdy. My advice is to bring a friend strong enough to help you get it off the car and through it in the water.

@@johnmiller9709 Wow ! Nice wheels but $159/pair ? I have to find something less expensive. This is just crazy ! Great build, will start the project soon ! Just found a slightly used pedal boat locally and already have a trolling motor, mounts, etc. so I'm excited to start it soon.
@@oldwortex5818 I found a different pair for less - www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Transom-Launching-Inflatable/dp/B06WLLW2S5/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=boat+wheels&qid=1615942852&sr=8-8 Have fun! I am adding lights and reinforcing the wheels with starboard on the inside of the boat.
Yes, I hit the water and nearly sunk the sucker. Unfortunately, the 1/8" toggle bolts and marine silicone I used to secure the wheel brackets to the back let go while in the water and the entire inside filled with water. I basically had eight 3/8" holes in the back of the boat taking on water. The good news is that even if this vessel fills up with water it does not sink. The solution is going to be me separating the top and bottom of the boat getting in the inside and using a piece of rectangular plywood on the inside of the boat while attaching the wheel brackets on the outside of the boat using bolts, washers, and locknuts along with silicone. This should definitely do the job however I need to go out and purchase or rent a "plier stapler" to reattach the top to bottom of the boat that is pneumatic in order to do the job. The staples that hold the top and bottom of the boat together are 5/8 of an inch long and I will have to remove each of the staples and then reapply them with this pneumatic device. To purchase it is around $360. and I haven't found a place that will rent one yet. Doing this will give me an opportunity to run the wires on the inside of the boat as well. I may even add some switches since I'm doing this. I know what everyone's thinking at this point! I should've just gone out and bought a boat! LOL However, I do enjoy doing projects like this and making the impossible, possible.
@@fishingismydrug1 Thanks for the tip on the rivets instead of staples however I do have the stapler now and removed the over 180 staples out by hand last weekend. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t realize that. Lol. One of my motivations for moving forward with this project was that I simply wanted to be able to get out onto the water and spend some time wherever I wanted. The benefit of this boat is that I can strap it to the ceiling in my garage in my condominium. I don't have a yard to store a regular boat in, and I don't have to pay for additional storage for a boat. It's handy and available whenever I want it, and it just drops right down on top of my car, so I can take it to any body of water without any storage fees or motor maintenance.

Nice! How did you know where to drill holes to mount the wheels? Been looking for a schematic of the internal frame...
Waiting for the 2nd video. Please and thank you. Thanks for the helpful info.

@@johnmiller9709Awesome! Just upload it on your channel?
Did you just screw straight into the boat for the wheels? Doesn't seem like it would be secure enough.
Great idea!
on the motor mounting bracket, how did you attach the two arms that are under the boat at the rudder/lake level.
Did you ever make a video of launching this paddle boat?
Not yet, you can subscribe and when I do I will post a link here and add it to my channel.
I would of liked a closer pic of how the bolts were connected to the lower part of the motor mount, but excellent looking rig.

Very cool, now make a video showing it in action on the water! :)
Hi are you sure you used size #3 conduit hanger? I think you used size 0 or 1. #3 seems too big for the motor mount which is only 1/2” in diameter
Not really sure now. It has been a long time.
Thx for the quick reply, were the motor mounting points sturdy enough with the motor thrust when in use? Im worried they would just snap
@@ajjamil1627 yes, they are very sturdy. I've been using it for years and it is completely fine.
Hi John.
This may be a silly question but when you're using the motor do the pedals spin? Can you keep your feet on them or will that slow the boat down?
That is actually a really good question. The pedals do spin and they do get in the way of your feet. I ended up taking the pedals out completely and sealing the holes. It doesn’t make the boat any faster but it allows you to put your feet anywhere you want in the front.
@@johnmiller9709 I would like to keep the pedals but can you put your feet on them to stop them from spinning?
Yes, anything in Massachusetts that has a motor on it whether it be electric or gas powered regardless of the size has to be registered.
My state makes us do everything once we put any type of motor on it
Rockerdad. The Coast Guard would beg to differ with you
Do you have order info for the wheels you attached?

@@rechargechea1155 Yes! It is insane that they can sell boats and no one can register them. I too went to the registry three times.
Nice paddle boat there. Where you get the wheels and does it need special glue so it wont sip water inside?
The links for the wheels are below. I had to take the boat apart and use 1/2" thick Starboard on the inside of the boat to make it rigid to hold the bolts and I also use marine-grade silicone inside and out.

How did you mount the wheels? I don't want to sink.
Without the new 100AH battery about how much $$ are you into this project thus far?
I’m not really sure however you can look at the section above and see the entire project list and added it all up.
How many people have you had in it?
Three adults in the front and two children in the back
Awesome build hey I was wondering about a question you answered about the wheels and was wanted to know how hard was it to take apart the boat to install the starboard thanks
@@johnmiller9709 thanks that sounds like a very long process but is it worth it and does it still float fine
Where do I got to get mine registered. As you know paddle boats don't come with titles how do I register it to get a sticker and boat numbers for it
So the paddle boat that I bought does come with a registration number and a tag located in the back. I would check with your local state water and fishing department.
How did you reseal the hull? Did you heat treat then silicone or restaple? Any vids of this pedal boat on the water and being launched?
I used silicone and I also re-stapled the entire haul. I would tell you that it was extremely arduous and painful procedure but I got it done with a lot of patience and persistence. No other vids at this time.

I’m in the process of looking for a slow leak. I’ve replaced the bearings for the paddle, and taken apart the steering arm. I used silicone when I put both back together, but I still get some leakage. Problem is that this boat is made out of ABS, and the seam where the deck and hull meet is glued.

The original rudder is still attached. Does that affect your steering, when you are using the trolling motor to steer?
Hi Dan, it does not affect it at all. I have since removed the pedal assembly and the rudder assembly and other than it being lighter there is no significance in performance.
Can you explain more on how you attached the trolling motor?
I bought and used the "Intex Motor Mount Kit for Intex Inflatable Boats" as the motor mount and then I used toggle bolts and metal hole straps to hold down the top and steel conduit hangers and toggle bolts to attach the bottom of the bracket to the back of the boat.

Have u hit the water
