  • Zero clearance inserts help to prevent wood tear out. With riving knives, you have to take off the riving knife to make one, but I'm going to show you how you can make one with a riving knife or with a splitter.

That tip about setting the fence to cut the blank is golden!

Splitter should be 4 to 8 thousands thinner then the blade kerf. A rule of thumb is to make the splitter as thick as the blade body and not the width of carbide blades. Adding a pin or screw at end of insert is recommended as a safety feature to prevent tilting of insert when downward pressure is applied.

Simple and effective. I've made several from all sorts of materials, and i think plastic is been my most effective (and most easily found). Aluminum is great, but getting the exact thickness needed is tough when you use so many different kerf sizes like I do. So I only use aluminum with my ¼" and ⅛" kerf blades.

thanks, like the steel for the splitter, i have those ridiculously expensive plastic ones which like to break off and are overly complicated to fit . oh did i mention expensive ! especially when you need to make at least 2 for different kerfs.

Yes I would as I have already made one or two for my saw one with and one without a riving knife
