Hi Chris, just bought my little 452 sq ft. Studio. And the laundry room is a mile away so thought I go on you tube and research these all in 1 w/d. Came ! your video and boy am I am happy,! thank you. I am widowed now and my husband used to do these type of inventions. Your video has inspired me to give it a go and install mine in the hallway. Thank you so much for the details instructions. Looking forward to not having haul my laundry down the stairs into my car and drive to laundry room and back. Btw: I subscribed, Warm Regards. Ana from Ocala, Florida.
Hi Ana, I’m very sorry to hear of your sad loss. Our loved ones stay with us forever, so I’m sure your husband will be with you in spirit as you do this job. Good luck with your project and let me know how it goes! God bless you and your family, Chris
How refreshing to see a how to video with great detail and a sense of humour. wonderful Christopher. my kitchen is the same type of layout. thank you so much and congrats on your new baby.
This was funny!! I could never do laundry that way. I would have to turn it to face the hallway and just put doors on the front if I didn't want to see it.
Have you considered replacing the L part of the counter (microwave area) with a foldable solution and putting the microwave in a higher place with a shelf? This way you can easily access the machine and still get the counter top area when you need it.
My thoughts exactly! No way would I crouch on my knees to do laundry. Completely out of the question. But I would turn it in the direction of the hallway. The way he put it in, is the way that the front of the washer/dryer would face..in the hallway, The box thing in the hallway would have to be moved over over so that the kitchen would have that additional area for storage under that counter top.
Chris great job. Well done! Suggestion. Put a hinge in the counter top above so when you do laundry you can slide the items on the counter over until the laundry is done, and then put the counter back down and slide your counter items back in place.
Oh thanks for the details.. my kitchen is tiny and has no water supply other than the sink and also no electricity supply other than the one over the counter😢 i bought the washer dryer but unable to understand how it will be installed? Now I understand that it can be 😅 and did not waste money. This is smart working. Imagining how these owners just did not think it through while building the house
I live in San Francisco. Couple of weeks ago, I did a search on replacing the rubber boot on a caliper piston, and I came across a very helpful video from your channel. Today, I did a search on installing a washer/dryer in a kitchen--and I came across a video from your channel!! Now, that was really random!
Thanks for the helpful video! Pretty funny too lol. Alot of vids I see doing this have the drain hose just emptying out directly into the kitchen sink basin. Im thinking either a) people dont know how to install it under the sink or b) its intentional for disposal. I read that its better to have the hose higher than the washing machine for something to do with phyics. So that may explain why some do it that way but I dont care for it at all and prefer the hose out of sight. I love the way you have yours connected under the sink hidden away. It seems like your washer operates perfectly fine, may have to try this myself.
Thank you! You can lead the hose up higher than the washing machine before it heads down to the under sink connection. This plumbing worked great for years with zero problems. Cheers, Chris 🙂
I've just moved into a place where the sink is miles away from the hot/cold water input for the washer your PVC pipe idea is absolutely genius!! Honestly, the people who did my kitchen were most likely cowboys and no handyman I've spoken to can be bothered to help me. Your video has taught me a lot, thank you! Also your fake wall idea, again pure genius!!
Great to see you back Chris and congrats on Emma. as for the video only you can make fitting a washing machine entertaining i loved that very much. oh and please send some of that snow this way we have had none for years lol.
Hi there, thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 The snow didn't last, it was over in a few hours and didn't stick... We'll be over in the UK again soon and our chances of a white Christmas in the salty sea air of Blackpool will be fairly slim. You never know though! Cheers, Chris 👍
Well the so called experts are saying its looking very promising for a white Christmas this year so you never know Chris. and if you get some in Blackpool then i hope to get some close by in Cheshire fingers crossed.
Hi Mate Thanks for the video, Having watched your video I had no thought of changing our washing machine but I remembered your tip on using foil under the all feet of the machine! , well had to buy a new machine our new machine is so tight 600mm space the machine 600mm its a very tight but used yourfoil trick nd it worked a treatin and out to connect a life saver else without would of had torn cushion floor again big thumbs up !!
Just bought a new washing machine and was looking up on how to install it to save on the £50 installation fee, mega impressed with all the work you guys did to your flat yourselves! So innovative, wish i was that handy. Entertaining and informative video :) Given me the inspiration to actually try do this haha
@@christopher_barr that's amazing, running the conduit through your wall was a brilliant idea also. great life skills and it feels better looking at a finished project knowing you did it yourself. I managed to install the machine 💪 was much easier than I anticipated, it's given me the courage to actually do my next DIY project and turn a piece of furniture into a concealed kitty litter box 🙈 the joys of having v limited space!
I love this vídeo its Gonna help me a lot and i do hace New baby too its crazy to go for a laundry 🧺 so definitely I’m gonna do this thanks 🙏 God bless you your family and lots Heath for the baby
Thanks. You were very entertaining, even though this was something I didn't think I had any interest in. Your foresight with the original kitchen design was really impressive too. And now that I've seen the kitchen, I can see why you want a sailboat - So much more room! ;-)
Brilliant!!! Came across your video as I'm looking for how to connect the drain to the bottom of my sink. Can someone please tell me the name of the piece that connects the end of the accordion hose to the undersink "Y" at 13:13 of the video? Desperately need to know, thanks!
Out of curiosity why can't you have the washer dryer facing you instead of on the side is it not wide enough because it seems like it might have enough room for it to actually face you instead of you having to go under there and go sideways I'm just curious either way I think it's a good idea
Wow. I don't know if you all are still there, but did no one consider in order to have better access to your unit, perhaps a counter that flips up out of the way, and then flip it down when you need it to be useful?
Just a question mate. Why don't you put de front towards the fake wall that lead to the hallway and install a door so you can hide it anyway and when you need to wash you just open the door. That way you have easy access to the detergent drawer. 😊
That’s amazing what you did. Thanks for sharing. Can I ask you about the washer dryer ? Which one did you get? I understand they take hours to dry clothes. How long does yours take?
Also, if you’re not using the space in front of the washer, door, and there are types of cabinets that allow you to roll with inside of a cabinet so that you can use that corner space, perhaps consider turning the washer, so the door faces into the kitchen ?
I would take the L part out and put a stackable there. Does something like that work (just thinking if I end up buying a place like that is it possible)? If I needed someone to install the washer and dryer for me what type of person (handy man, contractor, delivery guy) could do it?
Agreed very helpful videos esp smallest areas . Doing good being a dwarf size . Glad tidings to the newest member. Btw :) if you have a moment : After adding on p- trap etc washing machine nozzle , if washing machine doesn't drain could the only issue be the blockage.
would just having the washer front profile be completely facing out in the hallway be possible? seems easier to load use it that way instead of maneuvering under the counter
One of your funnier videos! Still a good bunch of tips (as usual). One question. Why didn't you face the washer towards the center of the kitchen, so you can see the controls? Doesn't look like it would block anything...
Hi Joel, thank you very much. 🙂 The gap isn't wide enough so there wouldn't be enough room for the door to open. Also, we keep some items on the floor in the corner under the worktop (bottled water for Rossella [I drink from the tap but Italians are fussy about their water 😂] & wine) so the extra storage space is useful, given the miniuscule nature of the kitchen! :-) Cheers, Chris 👍
Great video but one question when you connect that drain pipe under your sink should you have that u shape thing or isn't that nesseery I have kinda similar shape to yours but the pipe from washing machine isn't quite long enough to be able to use that apparently it stops from the dirty water getting back to the washiny machine..
In this small kitchen, you can change the location of the washing machine to the place of the kitchen cupboard. Any washing machine is located instead of the kitchen cupboard. And the kitchen cupboard is there in the corner instead of the location of the washing machine. And can dispense with only one door of the kitchen cupboard. The washing machine can have a longer bowl to drain the water, and another long bowl to take the water for washing. And there can be in the corner to put only one kitchen cupboard. The other cupboard can be placed in the hall room, attached to the wall, and installed in a higher place in the hall room. Thus, they have a spacious place to wash clothes in the washing machine, and they can open the door of the washing machine freely. Or they can exchange the washing machine for another washing machine that is not wide and small. She opened her door upstairs. You can place it on the other side of the wall in that long corridor entrance, in the hallway in the hallway .
Yes, just hook it to your existing fixtures under your sink but you will have to change some drain & water fittings to accomplish this. Do you know a friendly, local, trusted plumber?
A really interesting video, although I wasn't interested in doing it myself. But maybe I'd suggest your countertop where the microwave is to have it hinged against the wall? Then easy access to the washing machine controls. Anyway, I liked the way to explain it. Congrats!
Hi there, thanks! We need all the workspace we can get and we have the microwave on top of the worktop there. We have since added a bread making machine so we're getting really short on counter top space! The washing machine works fine under there, it's not a problem using it. Cheers, Chris 👍
What kind of drainage pipes do you have under your sink? are they 50.8 mm pipes or are they smaller? I want to try something like this in my apartment, but I'm scared about drainage capacity.
Or a bathroom, works same. Europeans have used these compact front-loaders for decades. They are more efficient, many now have DC direct-drive motors too, like LG does in the States.
Very informative video! You did a fantastic job! And a decent choice of washing machine! And also a local Italian brand of Indesit Innex! I hope this machine does you well!

Christopher Barr - Random Chris This may shock you! But there are quite a lot of us! It's crazy isn't it! 😂😂😂 When I was little, I thought I was the only one 😂. I'm glad you are impressed with my knowledge!
Hey brill video, and very clever and funny. I've tried to fit my new washer after replacing it with a new one, having problems pushing it into the tiny space but size spec is same as last one, not sure why its not going thru, I have a concrete floor where it'll be placed, will try with some polish...
Hi Shaz, thanks for your comment. You might find it's the friction of the rubber pads on the bottom of the feet of the washing machine that is making it hard to push into place. You can try putting some Aluminium foil (folded over a few times) under each pad so that it can slide around. Once on position you'll need to remove the Aluminium foil otherwise your washing machine will move around with vibration over time. Cheers and good luck, Chris 👍
This is very informative and inspiring for me as I look at how to permanent install a washing machine in a kitchen. Question: how do you get away with the drain hose being so low? Don't they have to come up to a certain height (I've read 30 inches minimum). I would think that you need to at least run a bend higher, then come down into your kitchen sink drain.
Hi Ken, the drain hose does go into the PVC ‘conduit’ pipe at that height, so it has to go from the machine up to that before heading down to the sink drain. We’ve had zero problems with this set up in the last decade, so it works perfectly for us. Cheers, Chris 👍
@@christopher_barr brilliant. I also discovered in another video, that as long as the drain hose is higher than the point in the washer where the most water is filled, then you're fine. Looking forward to properly installing a washer in my kitchen!
Great job loved the video , wished u were near me to help with my nightmare , trying to fit a combo like yours to the kitchen sink ..anyhow lots of. Tips and now I know it’s doable ..just got to get it done somehow ..best of luck with the baby👍oh yes my machine is freaking heavy it’s 4.3 cubic and I can’t move it on my own hellish heavy 😩 had ideas of rollers etc but with a front loader must be steady as u showed ..wish me luck 😋
Hi there, thank you for your comment and for the best wishes for Emma. 😊 I'm sure you'll get there with a bit of perseverance. Good luck with it and if you have any questions fire away and I'll do my best to help out. Cheers! Chris 👍
Seriously should just have an opening that went around the flue. As an addition to facing it to the hallway, just have an entrance to that tiny kitchen from the hallway. Small as it is, it won't feel as cramped
Nice one Random Chris i am getting my new/second washing machine this week and plumbing it my self like the hair conditioner trick...Must be a nightmare putting the washing on using that machine under the worktop just a tad awkward then. Lol
Hello Sir. I would like to offer my idea. Since you already made a whole in the wall. Instead of leaning down to do your laundry, why don't you put the what the area that you go in or you could put it on the hall and put a drawer in that empty unused space there.
because he had it like that for 7 years ( 10 years as of this comment) and now he can't fess up to that original oversight). For 10 years it would have been accessible to the larger hallway and gain some drawer space back in that tiny kitchen. Would also go with putting a drip pan under it to catch any leaks. Still, awesome ideas in this video
Thank you had a little bit of time piping underneath the bathroom sink this plastic tail pieces (plastic are rubber) is smaller then the washing machine drain hose needed metal clamps and duck tape on the side I’m buying next time with concussion
did you have any problem with it draining? I was always told that the drain hose had to be higher than the actual washing machine to drain properly.. I like this method of hooking up the drain, just bought a new place and I need to add a washing machine...
Hi Michael, we had our first washing machine (which was the cheapest model we could find when we bought it) installed there for 4-5 years with no problems whatsoever and the new washer dryer has worked perfectly since installation, so the drainage works great when installed this way. Enjoy your new home! Cheers, Chris 👍
Hello Chris, great video. Is it doable to have a dishwasher this far from the sink instead of a washing machine? My husband keeps saying we will have draining issues with the dishwasher (he is not an expert). I am dying for a dishwasher but the only space we have is the same distance as your washing machine is. Thank you in advance.
Hi Aisha, I believe you could do exactly the same as I did and the dishwasher would drain without any problems. If you have a slight incline from the high point at the dishwasher down toward the sink then gravity will drain the hose naturally. I installed the PVC pipe inside the wall when I refurbished the kitchen to keep the flexible drain hoses out of the way but it would also be possible to have these exposed behind kitchen units, as long as the flexible drain hoses are well supported to prevent them from drooping over time. Good luck! Chris 👍

Or washing up liquid :)
Excellent video, already hit the like and subscribe button. 👍
Did you have to install an air break for that washing machine though?
Great job loved the video , wished u were near me to help with my nightmare , trying to fit a combo like yours to the kitchen sink ..anyhow lots of. Tips and now I know it’s doable ..just got to get it done somehow ..best of luck with the baby👍oh yes my machine is freaking heavy it’s 4.3 cubic and I can’t move it on my own hellish heavy 😩 had ideas of rollers etc but with a front loader must be steady as u showed ..wish me luck 😋
Forgot to say thank you , I think u are a genius 👏👏
Hi there, thank you for your comment and for the best wishes for Emma. 😊 I'm sure you'll get there with a bit of perseverance. Good luck with it and if you have any questions fire away and I'll do my best to help out. Cheers! Chris 👍
Is there any water backup?
Damn the kitchens small but my god the hallway is huge
Seriously should just have an opening that went around the flue. As an addition to facing it to the hallway, just have an entrance to that tiny kitchen from the hallway. Small as it is, it won't feel as cramped
Tks. That helped me a lot.
My pleasure 👍
really helpful and funny video!
Thank you 😊
Nice one Random Chris i am getting my new/second washing machine this week and plumbing it my self like the hair conditioner trick...Must be a nightmare putting the washing on using that machine under the worktop just a tad awkward then. Lol
Hi Nigel, the washing machine works fine under there, it's not a problem using it. Cheers, Chris 👍
Hello Sir. I would like to offer my idea. Since you already made a whole in the wall. Instead of leaning down to do your laundry, why don't you put the what the area that you go in or you could put it on the hall and put a drawer in that empty unused space there.
I was just about the make the same suggestion.
because he had it like that for 7 years ( 10 years as of this comment) and now he can't fess up to that original oversight). For 10 years it would have been accessible to the larger hallway and gain some drawer space back in that tiny kitchen. Would also go with putting a drip pan under it to catch any leaks.
Still, awesome ideas in this video
Love it! Good Day!
Thank you!
THANK U FOR LETTING US WATCHING WASHING.
Thank you had a little bit of time piping underneath the bathroom sink this plastic tail pieces (plastic are rubber) is smaller
then the washing machine drain hose needed metal clamps and duck tape on the side I’m buying next time with concussion
Oh woopy doo!
did you have any problem with it draining? I was always told that the drain hose had to be higher than the actual washing machine to drain properly.. I like this method of hooking up the drain, just bought a new place and I need to add a washing machine...
Hi Michael, we had our first washing machine (which was the cheapest model we could find when we bought it) installed there for 4-5 years with no problems whatsoever and the new washer dryer has worked perfectly since installation, so the drainage works great when installed this way. Enjoy your new home! Cheers, Chris 👍
You can make top bar that pice wood open when you put washing powder in ,that should be much easyer
Good job 👌🏻
Cheers 👍
Good job🎉, Why don't you turn it to face out. It will make everything easier.
I need you to come to my apartment and let me know if I could install a washer & dryer in my kitchen.
You can hire me for a few minutes if you like: sailingbritaly.com/videocalls Cheers, Chris
Though should it the washing machine towards the small door you built you can have access to it through the hall
I agree making a door in the hallway is best...
Maybe turn the washer so you can access from the hall?
Good luck! Chris 👍
