Hey, remember another great option: Zcat Hold Reverb, good sounding, easy to use, silent soft switch, still on my pedalboard. Now it's time to take a look to the 2022 TC Electronic Infinite Sample Sustainer!
I have the GC Plus. It took me a while to get it. The key moment was the use of the effects loop which I use with an octave pedal and reverb - sometimes a tremolo in there too. It effectively creates a lush synth pad sound. Love it now.
I've had the Freeze for around 3 months, couldn't be happier. It's just so one-of-a-kind, and EHX quality to reliably bring the action! Perfect for running mics & keyboards thru, also
I prefer the sound of the Freeze, I think. Also factor in the smaller size and the lower price, and it's a no-brainer for me. That said, I'm all about the Freeze's big brother; the Superego! One of EHX's finest pedals, in my opinion.
I had the freeze, tried the Freqout, then bought one of the first Plus pedals to come out. It definitely takes a bit of practice to get the timing but once you do it sounds very musical and somehow less like an effect you can add vibrato to a bit for example and it will sustain the vibrato as well.
This video is arguably immediately out of date. Yesterday, TC released/launched their new 'Infinite' pedal. So there's a new affordable alternative in this pedal genre on the block! It has more features and functions than the EHX Freeze.
Thank you for mentioning.. I wasn't aware of the new TC electronic pedal, and looks much better than the Freeze. Gamechanger looks great, but very expensive, and Zcat audio is never available/ out of stock. This seems like a powerful option at a good price point! Thanks again, very likely to buy this.
Not the EHX Superego or Superego+? Even the S+ is still significantly less expensive than the Plus pedal. And they're both expansions on the Freeze algorithms.
@@regiramanathan6245 Ok, but the Superego is barely more expensive at least at times. Hi/Band/Lo (like any good synth filter) would be better since often mid-budget pedals hit the sweet spot of features and price.
I have both pedals. The plus is amazing when you use the fx out loop. I put in an electro harmonix c9. It makes the plus come alive. It took me a while to get the plus worked out like I like it. Since the pedal has two levels of pressure it takes some getting used to as well. But after some time it has become something that I feel is very expressive and I love playing with it.
the effects loop really offers different ways to use the pedal. I also just like using it to get some decaying sustain on notes (rather than a total freeze and hold).
I’ve had a Freeze since they came out, one the only pedals that’s never left my board and probably never will. I’ve modded mine to take and external footswitch, as the stock one eventually fails.
...cool video, thanks...I've owned Electro Harmonix's Super Ego Plus (an expanded EXPANDED version of the Freeze) for a couple of years, but have been thinking a lot about the Gamechanger pedal...if they'd have put it on sale in December for their "only sale of the year", like they did the previous year, I'd have picked it up...
I was thinking the freeze should have a switch for a full wet and then that is how he ended up using the plus. I wonder how the OBNE sunlight compares to these? I had my eye on an ehx for years. This is a good series idea.
Awesome series. I'd actually prefer the freeze if it simply had an fx loop to process the sustain independently. The Plus™ has this natural vibrato which is cool but you might not want. The freeze offers the true blank slate to paint the freeze with other fx, the problem is you can't really do that :(
I've been wondering about both of these so this video is perfect, and great idea for a series too. I also appreciate the comments; curious to check out the OBNE Sunlight and EHH Superego as well. Thanks all.
I have both. I think every guitar player should have a Freeze pedal. (Buy it new so youre guaranteed to get the soft switch.) Its essential for practicing ear training, drones, ballads, etc and it comes in handy live all the time. It deserves to become a modern classic pedal. The Plus Pedal has a learning curve in order to get the most out of it: layers, full wet, fx loop, etc. But if you’re interested in ambient music, wide chords, textures, and planning on exploring all this in your music, it’s worth the upgrade. But again, you gotta use it and commit time to exploring it. But a Freeze works for me 95% of the time-and with the bonuses of low cost and small footprint-I’d have no problems just using it if I ever had to sell my Plus pedal.
You're trolling, right? The EHX adapters have a lot of play in the specific output, but the ma is much higher than it needs to be.The only way another power source could cook the circuit is if it was far above the recommended basic 9 volts.I would imagine anything above 12 volts would create some smoke.
@@markferguson3745 I’m not trolling, I don’t think they sell the Freeze anymore. Probably because they were burning up. One of mine started smoking when I plugged it into an ISO brick. Luckily I got it replaced. I’ve never plugged the replacement in without their power supply and a friend also had the same issue when he used his power supply, I think he has a Zuma.
@@LentilsOverkill Yes, at first....Then tried it with an isolated power cable....The only thing that stopped it was the power supply that EHX sent with it. That’s an unnecessary headache since my board is wireless, I’d like to keep it that way.
@@williamratcliffe7833 when you say an isolated cable...do you mean like an isolated port on a power brick? There are a ton of power bricks out there that market themselves as isolated when really they're not. As far as I know, there's absolutely nothing special about EHX power supplies.
EHX Superego+ : "That's cute..." But seriously, the TC mostly looks cool but nearly every single TC pedal I've ever tried (many of them) has disappointed me somehow. For example the Infinite doesn't even have auto-triggering unlike even the basic Superego for some godforsaken reason.
The freeze sounds great, the guy in this video is using it wrong. Takes a little practice to get the timing right also it sounds different based on where you place it in the chain
Had/sold the Plus after many months of trying to like it. It’s pulsating characteristics were just too unpredictable and too unmanageable for me (and I dig unpredictability in certain pedals). It seemed to me to actually be a flaw in its design that has to do with the timing of one’s engaging of the pedal-a split-second either way and it sounded okay or awful. And not being able to use/deploy an effect in a consistent manner = deal-killer. Anyway, just my two cents.
I use this pedal in a 2 amp stereo setup like he touches on in the video, and I completely agree. There should at least be a “Smoothness” knob that lets you shorten or expand that time gap the pedal uses to sample your playing.
Totally agree. I'm constantly frustrated by the pulsey, vibrato-like sound that usually comes through the pedal. It seems like the sample length they use is just too short. The EH Superego seems (I haven't personally tried it yet) give a better result.
Really enjoy this cat's totally unpretentious and straightforward manner. Thank you.

Superego+ is the only pedal I own and I love it! Plus EHX is a great company so I don't even mind paying a bit more for their products.

TC always sounds modulated
Love this idea for the series! I'm looking forward to the next one. I want to hear your thoughts on some distortion categories.
The Plus has an amazing side gig: the effects loop controlled by easing-in the pedal. Infinite possibilities.
That's why I love the Superego.
It's like a Freeze Deluxe! 😙👌
Not the EHX Superego or Superego+? Even the S+ is still significantly less expensive than the Plus pedal. And they're both expansions on the Freeze algorithms.
About to say something similar, the Superego has more functionality a bit closer to the Plus.
I think that's the point of this Hi/Lo series? A shootout between pedals with different costs.

Oh man, TC Electronics just announced a pedal like this today!
Really? Nice
This popped up in my suggestions moments after I already watched the TC infinite debut video. The algorithm gods have spoken, I NEED a sustainer pedal
Excellent review - thanks. I use the Freeze. It’s become an integral part of my sound.
Really helpful video. I have the Freeze and really like it; your video has made me appreciate it even more. Thank you!
Obne sunlight is fun for sustain too. I love my freeze along with it though.

The Gamechanger was never intended to be a freeze pedal. Think of how a piano sustain is used, thats what its for and its the only one there is.
I enjoyed this contact and hope that you guys make more like this.
You could have wait 15 minutes more and introduce the new TC infinite sustainer;) Hum... what a coincidence... ;)
The Plus!!! Ordering now.
I wonder what it would sound like with lap steel?

Great, fun video!
So cool. Almost like having an organ playing with you.
I don't mind the difference in tone. I like synthy sounds and play with heavy fuzz. Gonna get the freeze!
The pulse has a sort of pulsating organ sound which i like, the price is ridiculous what im getting for it though
Best shirt and guitar combo on the internet - barring anything w/Ira Kaplan.
If you're running the freeze pedal into any sort of modulating effects it will cease to sound as stagnant as it does clean.
What kind of shoes is Joe wearing?
Dang! - I have the Freeze and I love it but... this has sold me on the Plus as well. Gotta go git me one o' them.
may i ask what strat model was used?
thanks!
Great video, very good explanation.
Curious about a comparison with the latching modes on the Slö ?
The freeze is hands down the better value. They need a stereo version.
I'm going for the new Infinite By Tc electronic!
I have a freeze, it’s fun. However if you don’t use their power supply, it will catch on fire. I can’t stress this enough.

Can't afford a Plus, got a Freeze; mostly okay with it
Incredible
Lest we forget the free Freeze presets through the HX community..
Nice Vid! Love my Plus for the Studio work for sure.! ~cheers

Hog2 is the granddaddy,
Can you use that pedal as a exspression and volume pedal as well?
The Freeze made my entire rig hum due to EHX’s bizarre voltage/power ratings.
Did you daisy chain it?

Nah sorry, TC Electronic Infinite for the win
My ear likes the Sustain Plus where my wallet likes the Freeze pedal.
As a piano player and guitarist, I’d go with the game changer
ehx sounds cheap
It shouldn’t warble for $300+. Gamechanger makes expensive gimmicks.
Sassy. Sessy tones.
