- Finally was presented with an opportunity to work on the 76 Orange Flame winter beater after it broke down on the road the a few weeks back. Watch as I give a basic description of the HEI ignition system, demonstrate how to locate the source of failure, and change the components out to get it back to running condition.

I have a 76 identical in every way to that car. Bought it 24 years ago and still love it. About 10 years ago I got carried away and dropped a 500HP 388 stroker with a solid roller in it with a PTC Built TH350 manual valve body with a 3,800 converter out to a drag vette 6 link set up with a Tom’s rear end and it’s a lot more fun than the stock L-48. Lol
Yea, I'll bet that chews up the road. Definitely an easy way to get into more trouble than you would with the L48.

Thank you for the video. It helped verify i was doing everything right. I have a 78 with the hei. New coil,cap,rotor,module and 12v going in. Still no spark. 😮
Glad it was helpful. You could have a failure of the internal distributor harness or housing itself. I'm about to do a follow-up video for this car, since that's exactly what happened to it.

Hey Larry. This Corvette is definitely one of those "dog whistle" type cars. Even with its worn in appearance it draws stares and comments every time I take it out. It has a great background story to it. When I get some time l'll have to make a video about its history.

I have an 81 Corvette with a new battery. Has been starting no problem all summer until last week. No electric. Had battery on trickle charger and displayed battery as fully charged. Went to turn ignition and even in accessory mode there's no power of any kind. No dome light, footwell light radio, nada. Not sure where the issue is but wish me luck
Hey Max, sorry for the late reply. I'm hoping you got it figured out by now, but my first thought would be to start with a closer look at the ignition switch attached to the steering column attached to the dash.
just a FYI camshaft spins 1/2 as fast as the crankshaft not 2x as fast
Yep, thanks for the clarification. After I made the video, I realized I had the gear size backwards in my head and misspoke. Growing old sucks😁.
Nice Video ! Brings back memories of the old GM modules that went dead .
Sometimes you got a warning it was gonna die ?
sometimes not ..
I even had a bad Condenser once ( small cylinder connected to Module )
I used to hit the contact points with some 220 sandpaper before re-installing to clean off rust and help them fire better .
Shooting WD40 on them doesnt hurt and Will also help get a car started( that got wet ,) running again .
Yep, all very good tricks that work really well. After I shot this video I went to set the base timing and discovered it wouldn't idle with the vacuum advance connected. After reinspecting I realized the ignition module wiring was cracked and brittle, so I just elected to buy a new distributor for now rather than spend the time rebuilding this one.

Hey Sonny, glad to help. You can use an inexpensive multimeter to check for 12 volts at the BATT connector with the ignition key in the "on" position.
What if I don't have 12v what I can check after that? That's my issue

What's the next thing to check if there ain't no 12v at the red wire? Please answer
That power comes from the ignition switch, and will only have 12V if the key is in the "on" or "run" position. I would start there. Let me know how it turns out👍.
My 79 corvette give me hart time to start after seat for a week,then works dine all day but coul be the carburetor? I want to start ,alot smoke before that happens, like is alot of fuel in the cilinder
That is possible. Sounds like you may be flooding on initial startup. The new fuel with ethanol tends to ruin carburetor gaskets. Definitely worth taking a look inside the carburetor to see what's going on.
is there an extra red 18 or 20 ga. coming out of the harness back there ? im putting together my c3 distributor and noticed a smaller red wire with a black plastic clip. already have the wiper ground connected and the two that plug into the distributor. do you know where the smaller red wire goes?

and exactly how did you forget that the screws holding the coil in the cap had to be removed? that's what you get for working on all that new technology....
That's for sure, although at this point I'm not sure if 20+ year old cars can be considered new technology anymore😁. Thanks for watching👍
Just me or did those distributor springs look different??
They may have been, but I ended up focusing on the internal corrosion and the overall wear I noticed in the distributor. After finishing the video, I made the decision to replace the entire assembly when it still didn't want to idle correctly. I'll probably detail the replacement in another video. Thanks for the comments👍.
Great video I always gotta start mine with starter fluid is there a reason for that ?
Halal, it could be something as simple as a weak fuel pump or restriction in the fuel filter or line. One thing to watch out for with ethanol is that it's very destructive to traditional carburetor gaskets, so I would also check those as well.

I believe I bought the module at Autozone and the cap/rotor/plug wires from rockauto.

Bud, hate to point it out to ya but you rushed your repair. There is a coil screw under the cap that is not tightened.... But at least ya didn't spend alot of money having a mechanic do it for ya......
Yep, I'm aware, this isn't my first rodeo. I had no intention of re-using the old distributor once I saw how deteriorated the original distributor harness was. Since I was in the middle of making the video, I buttoned everything back up and then replaced it with a new distributor afterwards.
