Oliver, Your tutorlials have blown me away! I'm 86 and just getting around to watercolor art. After enjoying some of your tutorials, I'm convinced I can do it. I live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and love the trees here - all four seasons! Now I am inspired to TRY to represent them in WC. I lived in the deset Southwest for 50 years, and saw nothing but beauty in the desert and mountains...but the Valley is magnificent. So much to see and record! And, I'm left-handed, too! And Red/Green blind. I am, however, determined! Thank you gain. You, Sir, are a treasure!!
Once again I am left speechless! You are definitely the best teacher online!! I can imagine so many uses for your “two simple washes”! Sometime it would be great to learn how you plan your painting. Sometimes I look at a photo that I would like to paint and it seems overwhelming so I end up painting it in parts which I don’t think always results in a painting that is as cohesive as it could be. Thank you for everything!!
I too am tired of being confused, pick one teacher and stick with him (her) Like both of you I choose Tyler! I love how he explains things, he makes hard things look easy… that’s a sign of a good teacher, also I don’t feel anxious or nervous but rather calm with an attitude that hey! I can do this! He helps me to believe in myself…😊
Thank you again for an excellent tutorial, Oliver. I am a grown man now, but I keep thinking I wish had a teacher like you in every subject at school :) This is really useful for me in my watercolour journey going forward. Thank you!
Your videos are not only brilliant and so informative to watch but you're so generous with your time. Artists like you and Mark Carder (DrawMixPaint) + UA-cam = The gift that keeps on giving. Sincere thanks 🙏
Oliver, if painting was poetry, you have been excellent at explaining what happens between the lines. Your tutorials are some of the most comprehensive ways to practice and establish the core knowledge aspiring watercolour painters need. Keep up the good work and thank you so much for everything!
Holy cow, you are a fantastic teacher and artist. It is very rare to find both in one person. Thank you so much. You have made my golden years more golden.
This is a great demostration of how to blend the pigments to create this atmospheric effects that are daunting for beginners. Thank you ! From Houston Texas
Un excellent professeur, il explique les 3 techniques sur sec et sur humide . Je n'ai jamais vu cette comparaison avant . Un anglais comme on les aime. A suivre
Thank you again. This was extremely helpful & I will go back and watch “controlling the wash” again. We so appreciate your time & effort to help us move along in this most challenging medium. Can’t wait for the next video😁
I am not a beginner but I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and am ready to undertake some brush and paint practice that is NOT specifically for a painting. THANKS Olly!
No words except WOW! w c is making sooo much sense to me now and your videos did it. I’ve watched about 6 of your videos and I’m connecting so many dots it is unbelievable. You break it down to the basics to the point of “I get it. I can do this.” You are like the light at the end of the tunnel. You have such a gift of breaking things down into simple parts / steps. Love your gentleness, encouragement, willingness to share and much much more. So many w c vids entertain more than teach. Your’s are fabulous, they teach! You are a great teacher, and I thank you for that. Thank you.
Thank you so much Oliver for what you are doing to share, teach, and essentially give back to the art form so dear to you. You are very much appreciated and are astutely skilled.
LOVE your technique of broken washes.Watching your videos is helping me so much in discovering water colour. I am practicing with your tutorials. Thank you so much 😊
I love love your tutorials, not only for the step by step teaching and showing, but also for letting beginners know why these basic techniques are important and what effect each can help achieve. Thank you and I'll keep learning with your videos.
By far your videos are perfect to learn the nuts and bolts of watercolor painting. If a beginner watches your videos attentively, the learning period/curve can be considerable compressed. You highlight not just the steps & processes but provide the conceptual inputs. Why we do what we do. Appreciate your passion & sincere efforts. Thanks.
Thank you very much Oliver and great timing, just what I wanted to know at the right time. You make it all look very easy but your approach to breaking things down into clear simple English is much appreciated. There are many artists who share their knowledge but I have not found anyone else who is able to communicate so their experience so well. Please keep doing these ‘mini workshops’ as I am learning so much ! Thank you
Thanks Oliver another calm helpful video ,you have a really lovely approach which intrinsically shows just how tricky watercolour is .I hope all UA-camrs wanting to try this medium find your videos , I allways recommend and share your teaching with any people who ask me where to go ,which is great as there is no where else on UA-cam I would feel confident to recommend Thanks again Tim .
Hi Oliver! I’ve just spent the last 4 years watching (copying) tutorials. If I’d only started with yours as you have shown me the essence of watercolor painting and helped me to own it for myself! Thank you, thank you!
Thank you Oliver, you really teach well. I understand much more about applying washes. I also found it useful seeing you mix your colours and the consistency of your paints. Thank you once again😊
If I could give you a thumbs-up for every time I’ve watched this video and learned something new, you’d be viral by now. You are a terrific teacher, especially in your honesty and encouragement about the importance of dedication, practice and experimentation. At this point, I can take your desert landscape and “masterfully” turn it into Moses Crossing the Red Sea, but I’m learning and enjoying it! Who knows, in six months it may progress to Hannibal’s Crossing the Alps! Many, many thanks for your tutorials and encouragement. I am heading over to join your Patreon community; great teaching should be appreciated and supported!
Thank you Oliver for your generous explanation of skills and techniques. It encourages me to hear you say watercolour is a challenging medium, I've been close to 'throwing the towel in' a few times. I've bought a pad which I'm going to use purely for practice and try to enjoy the learning process rather than becoming frustrated by it.
Really interesting! I've never seen anyone use washes in quite this way, but I really like it. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I can't wait to try it for myself, and I'm looking forward to seeing your book when it's published.
Thank you Oliver for another brilliant tutorial. So very helpful. There is always something new to learn from your tutorials. Can't wait for the next one.
A very informative tutorial, Olly. I was particularly taken with the 'broken' wash as I hadn't come across that particular one before. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills with all of us aspiring watercolour artists.
I find all your videos very helpful. Looking forward to your next one…I have difficulty in mixing colours, knowing which goes with what. Thank you Ollie for giving us of your time. Your teaching is very valuable.
Wonderful wash practice for me, so clearly explained and at just the right pace. I would love to learn how to do large washes around objects without making a mess of brushmarks, so that I can do bigger paintings.
The theory and the practical execution are both extremely well explained and demonstrated . Much appreciated .Thank you ! I am excited to put this into practice, Now I understand why some of my efforts at achieving some of these were doomed from the start . Your controlling wash video goes hand in hand. You are an extraordinary Teacher !
Hi Oliver, I'm new to your tutorials and am so motivated by the gentleness and patience that you show while teaching these methods. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for walking me through these techniques!
Hello Oliver, hello everyone, first of all my thanks to Oliver. Again a very good and instructive clip. I did the exercise immediately and found out that at least the exercise ariegated wash wet on dry but also wet on wet was not as easy for me as it looks in the clip. But after many attempts to get these two variations down on paper, I finally managed it.
Just a note to anyone who is buying Watercolour paints. White Nights (Russian) or Kuretake Gansai Tambi (Japanese Watercolour). While really good quality, these are opaque watercolour's unlike Winsor & Newton and Daler Rowney (Western watercolours). Please be aware of the difference. Western are traditional, transparent watercolour paints. Eastern - More opaque (non transparent), almost like diluted acrylic paints. It makes a big difference in terms of what your learning to achieve from the likes of Oliver.
So true about Kuretake. It is my 1st w/c set. Was getting frustrated as I could not achieve many techniques. Discovered that it is not designed to be mixed that is why there are so many colours. And as it is resin based it doesn't run and merge as well as Western style w/c.
Really interesting! I was watching and wondering how I wish I knew more about which colours work well together in this technique (as I often end up with mud) then wonderful next video is colours, well done, looking forward to it,
Thank you so much, Oliver. I really marvel at how generous, thoughtful, and skilled you are in sharing your knowledge and in how you’ve developed your channel. Superb!
Excellent watercolor tutorials! I am in the very beginning stage of learning watercolor, I am very lucky to find your videos. You explained watercolor so detailed and demonstrated so clearly. I will do practices following the instructions. Thank you so much for sharing these brilliance tutorials.
I do enjoy watching how you can turn a few strokes of paint I to a landscape. I am encouraged by your guidance and have started to try to do this myself. Thankful also that your a lefty too.
Thanks for your videos. Best demonstration of glazing I have ever seen. I always enjoy your work and profit greatly from watching your demonstrations. A real encouragement to keep on painting.
Thank you for so generously sharing your skill and expertise. I feel like the building blocks I missed out on when I started painting a few years ago are now falling into place. So glad I found your tutorials.
Thank you Olly for this well explained vid on watercolour washes. I want to learn more about washes and planning the layers. Your painting of - is it Durdle Door, or similar, with the arch at the ocean - is absolutely gorgeous 😍 All of the colours in the rocks and clouds are awesome! I paused the vid to try to work out how you did the broken washes and in what order. And then I saw the harder edge on the cloud in the middle and it blew my mind! I shall definitely watch more of your work - thank you so much for this 👏😃
Thank you so much for this important and very well explained tutorial. Also, I absolutely love your paintings, the light, the colours, the details are amazing!😃💞💞💞
You teach so well it makes seem like it’s possible to do those things with the practice that we need to do. Thank you so much for these videos and the time you spend on them they’re really appreciated.

I've watched a lot of video tutorials on painting with water colour but this series as perhaps one of the best I have come across. Beautifully narrated and I like the way Oliver puts these practises into applying it to an actual painting. i have also learnt a great deal d=from these videos - really well put together

I am 84 and just learning! I totally agree that Oliver has the best tutorials, especially for us beginners.
I learned more from your tutorial videos than from 4 years art college. It's so nice of you to share the detailed techniques how you pain. Thank you.
You are a very good teacher. Watercolor is physics and you teach the fundamentals very very well. Thank you .
Physics - you're quite right there Murthy!
Once again I am left speechless! You are definitely the best teacher online!! I can imagine so many uses for your “two simple washes”! Sometime it would be great to learn how you plan your painting. Thanks Donna - planning a painting is an important aspect of watercolour and I'll be making some content on this at some stage.
I agree with you. I have looked at so many UA-cam videos for about a year and have come back to him. He explains things better than anyone else.
I too am tired of being confused, pick one teacher and stick with him (her) Like both of you I choose Tyler!
