    Any authors out there sitting on the fence, I can highly recommend World Anvil. I write full-time and having a place to keep all my world building has been invaluable. It saves so many headaches and it offers so much more potential. Thank you Janet and Dimitris for creating this outstanding product.

      Dude, me too! I was watching on of my favorite analysts, and he took a moment to mention his sponsor, WA, and I literally had to pause the video like, wait, what he was talking about sounded LEGIT. And because the folks from WA are so humble, it further motivates me to pay for an account, not just a free one, because its super reasonable to ask for a little support for such an amazing tool!! Just take a look at their starting prices, at all the features you get, a base membership is a phenomenal start... but they even have an option for seriously professional level world builders.

    • @WorldAnvil
      @WorldAnvil  5 років тому +4

      There are a tonne of options for this :) You can start out with a working map (you can freehand it and upload the picture... or, well - I made my working map in MS Paint and it's UGLY!.... but it does the job) and commission one later. You can use software like Wonderdraft or Inkarnate (which are both not bad) or use pre-made maps released by artists like Caeora (Blue Sword Games) or Deven Rue! Lemme know if you need more recommendations!
      --janet

    • @jchinckley
      @jchinckley 5 років тому +1

      You could also check out profantasy.com... They have mapmaking software that includes every kind of map or blueprint you can imagine, including creating whole worlds on the fly using fractal technology. Their main software is called Campaign Cartographer 3+ and all of their software is a one time purchase and downloadable. They've been in business for 15+ years and during that time they've maintained the ability for customers to download the software they've purchased. If you prefer CDs or a "hard copy" of the software you purchase they have that for an additional small price to cover shipping and production.
      For someone like me who intends the creation of several worlds for a project I've been contemplating for decades, it is a must-have.

    Any writers who have the sage pack? Is $250 dollars a year really worth it? Seems rather expensive for up and coming authors.. I wish the free version wasn't stripped down so much with each tier adding just a little more. Awesome product regardless of the pricing tiers.

    • @WorldAnvil
      @WorldAnvil  5 років тому +3

      Hi Matt! So to get started building your world as an author, or to set up your public facing world display, I recommend the Journeyman tier. This will give you the ability to keep everything private and get things looking as you want them. You'll get enough map features (9 layers and loads of pins) to plan everything out, 5 worlds, and enough space to make everything how you want it. You'll get 5 subscribers, so you can use that for top level Patrons, beta readers or similar. If you need more co-authors, space, or a few more subscribers, then upgrading to Master should do it.
      I think the main advantage of Sage access for publishing authors is the large number of subscribers, who can get exclusive access to behind the scenes content, and the password-protected articles. These are perfect for rewarding Patreons, or unlocking whole behind the scenes areas of your world for those who have bought your book, who follow you on social media, or who get your newsletter.
      Honestly, it depends on how much your readers are invested in your world and your additional content (and how much you produce of it!), and that's going to be different for every writer. If it's a major incentive for fans to be able to read extra content , then I'd say it's worth it - you'll get more emotional investment and more long-term involvement, and it'll be easier to dripfeed content between releases. If not (for example, your worldbuilding isn't hugely rigorous or your fan-base isn't focused on that aspect) then maybe stick with a lower tier and use it as a platform for your own private worldbuilding and a public facing on-boarding tool to alleviate the learning curve of your worldbuilding and provide a little extra info.
      We try to be super open about this stuff - so do let me know your thoughts on this! You can also email me at hello@worldanvil.com if you prefer :)

      I've given the Sage account some thought. I've got a Master account for my own work and a Grandmaster account with a co-author. The price on those is negligible considering how much work it saves me on the world-building and file-keeping side.
      I worked out a very conservative estimate. If I was wasting even just 10 minutes (often it was more) every business day for a year searching through notebooks and digging through boxes and drawers, I'd rack up 40 hours. That 40 hours is a standard work week for me...40 hours I can now dedicate to writing words, which will in turn make money. Even one hour is worth more to me than the cost of the accounts I use..
      As for Sage, the plan is to upgrade both accounts to that by the end of the year. I think $250 is a steal if I'm honest. With a half decent audience base, you'll make that in a month off your Patreon. Even more if you have a good mailing list. If I was just starting out, I'd hold off on the Sage account and start with something smaller to begin with as Janet said.
      I agree it's an awesome product no matter the price. You get a lot of bang for your buck. I mean, the level of support alone is unparalleled in my experience.
      I've been using it since late 2018, but I really wish I'd picked it up when I started out on this crazy adventure. I hope you find a package that works for you. It's a fantastic tool that will save you a world of pain! :D

    Damn. Looks awesome, but I'm new to this and it looks really involved. I'm writing a sci-fi story that I hope to make into a televised series at some point, but it's just in the developmental stage right now. Would this be right for me to start using? Again, I'm new to all of this. I started late in life. I'm 57 and the only thing I've had published so far is a Star Trek short story for my college's literary annual. Can I get a handle on this, or would I be wasting my time? LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!

    • @WorldAnvil
      @WorldAnvil  5 років тому +2

      Hi Marauder - if you want to keep track of what you're building, it's going to be PERFECT for you! WA is pretty easy to use - in its most basic form, you just write articles and link them together, to create an inter-connected model of your world. Map pins are as simple as right clicking and filling in the little form that pops up. You can use the buttons to format all your text. Like with any new programme there's a small learning curve, but everything within it works the same way! Plus we have a help channel and a codex with explanations, and there are more youtube tutorials coming out every few weeks! :)
      --janet

    • @JaimeBuckley
      @JaimeBuckley 5 років тому +5

      @Marader I'm right there with you. 50 here and I literally have 28 years of notes that I'm moving onto this platform, so HUGE task, but let me add to what Janet has said...
      Yes, there's a small learning curve, BUT it's completely offset by one of the most supportive communities I've ever been a part of. Kind, intelligent, helpful and exTREMELY supportive. So if you ever get stuck (and I really do form time to time), someone always jumps in to help you.
      I highly recommend you grab a Journeyman package like I did at first. It allows you more features and more freedom in your initial creations, then as you build your world and feel you want the ability to expand, these guy pro-rate the packages--so you only pay for what you use (which I have appreciated).
      Also, being someone who has been publishing and selling books and comic books of my own creation since 2005--if you're working towards a televised series at some point (I'm working towards an animated series myself), what would be better than being able to catch the interest of others by showing your world and brilliance of your ideas?
      Just a thought.

      We use a washing machine in our house for 5, due to the high volume of clothes and lessening time each of us has to wash.
      The machine isn't as precise as hand and certainly not as flexible but it makes up for those with exceptional rigour and convenience.
      The clothes turn up clean enough and we're more free to explore avenues that can aide our world building the same way the machine aides our washing. 😄

      Cool stuff. that all works better if you just take the models from CC, and import them into Coreldraw. And then use Corel.

      Well, I think that the major point of this website is to make it easier to organize. Also, I tried word documents for my own world building but it feels a bit overwhelming with not knowing where to start or where to go. WA seems to be focused on guiding people through the worldbuilding process.
