  • Join historian Dan Snow as he explores the places that shaped England’s story, in this exclusive series with History Hit. In this episode, Dan visits a spine-chilling subterranean bunker near the historic city of York. In active service from the 1960s-1990s, the bunker was designed as a nerve-centre to monitor fallout in the event of a nuclear attack.

I served in the Royal Observer Corps during the 1980s at several observation posts, 'down the hole' at a nuclear reporting cell and at Bedford Group HQ bunker, which was a sister to this bunker near York. Nice to see something of that time of service preserved. Of course, we were not allowed to talk about any of this at the time. I can still write backwards, which was a necessary skill for plotters who stood behind the perspex map boards receiving information to plot by headset for the benefit of forecasters stood on the opposite side to mark up the fallout plumes on the map.

Definitely worth a visit, very well preserved and a good insight as to what went on in those cold war years. I was with the ROC for over 15 years up until stand down in 1991, in Lincoln 15 Group. We had a similar control ,at Fiskerton near Lincoln.

I have visited this place. Its very interesting but is also a very sobering experience. They couldn't bring down any photos of their families. Definitely worth checking out tho.

It's really weird how this video gives the impression that the bunker is up on the moors, 'tucked away on the edge of York'. Very misleading. It's actually only a mile and a half away from the city centre, in a busy suburb, surrounded by houses.

It's a blessing these bunkers were never occupied for their intended use of nuclear war.
