Happy Sunday everyone! Hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend. The Ridgeline was one of the first lifestyle trucks to come to market over a decade ago, but new competitors such as the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick are right around the corner. We will be driving the new Santa Cruz in August, but for now, Honda has given their truck a thorough update for 2021. Are you a fan of the more truckish looks this year?
Sofyan, the tailgate is rated at a 300 lb. load WHILE IN MOTION - it can handle CONSIDERABLY more weight while stopped, so no worries about "fat people" breaking it. :) The second generation Ridgeline's tailgate is a carryover from the one on the first generation which was tested to support the weight of another Ridgeline between two Ridgelines with their tailgates lowered (I can provide the source for this information upon request). Also, you might knock off a couple of TENTHS of a second by using the 10-speed instead of the 9-speed, but not two SECONDS - you'd need another hundred horsepower or so to do that. :). Another also, did you have the transmission in D or S when performing your 0-60 test? In D, the transmission normally starts in second gear and has to downshift to first on heavy acceleration which wastes time. In S, the transmission starts in first for faster acceleration.
@@garrettw99 Yea get the rtl and get heated seats, sunroof, and leather. Those plastic fenders will fade and you don't get more horses just stickers and ugly gold wheels
I've owned Honda's since my first in 76" , a three door Civic. To call this gadget laden toy a "Truck" is sort of a joke. If Honda ever makes a real truck, i'll be first in line and will gladly dump my F150.
Lol ain’t that the truth. Where I live everyone either has a truck or is saving for a truck. It’s the suburbs. None of them do any “truck things” It’s just so they can rev their engines at red lights and hang out in parking lots with other people who have trucks.
Very true, I bought mine for Home Depot runs, hauling small stuff but will never use it to tow or go off road. It’s a great daily driver with a smooth ride and roomy for a midsize truck. Very happy with mine.
Yeah...my neighbors either have full size F150's or fully kitted out bro-dozers! With that in mind, this thing needs an additional 8 includes of lift and a 6.6 liter diesel. Then it will be ready for grocery runs and trips to the mall.
You do a great job with your channel. I like how you break down all the features through all the trim packages and explain the features compared with other vehicles from other competing vehicles.

@@Smooththatsme he shited on the HR-V for the lack of acceleration... I still bought it regardless. It's not a sportscar obviously but I'm able to accelerate into freeways and pass others easily at least with the FWD since it's lighter than the AWD.
I've owned my 2017 G2 Ridgeline RTL-E since it came out. Across these years, I absolutely LOVE this truck (coming from more traditional full-size trucks). I think the front end aesthetic change is great, but I very much dislike the HPD package (especially those horrid fender flares). I'll probably wait for the next generation to upgrade.
For a refresh it is fine with me. With the redesign coming in a few years you really just need to increase the ground clearance, bed height and improve infotainment. You already have the best all wheel drive systems, one of the highest payload capacities in it's class and without a doubt the best handling and comfort. This is definitely more a truck than many of it's competitors. BTW, unless the Santa Cruz can tow 5000lbs, haul 1500lbs, comfortably hold five Redline reviewers and has an all-weather beating torque vectoring SH-AWD system, I wouldn't compare it to the class-leading Honda Ridgeline.
Crazy to compare Ridgeline w the Santa Cruz . The Ridgeline is a truck the Santa Cruse can’t compete, To me it’s a car and I think the girls will love it!!!

A niche that finds having a tailgate that swings out to make reaching into the bed far easier than in other pickups very useful, especially for women, kids, and shorter men. A niche where a very capable torque vectoring AWD system that comes standard in all Ridgeline versions can be very useful in some parts of the country. A niche that never intends to use a pickup for heavy duty hauling, but could use one that fills the bill for comfortable family transportation while still being capable of running down to Home Depot and picking up a new refrigerator, or other bulky or messy items not suitable for SUV transport. Not to mention added safety features that aren't available in many pickups, and paddle shifters for those who want to control the transmission shift points under some conditions. These features may not be important to some, but might be to others, hence the description of "niche". I'm in the market for such a vehicle myself, but am waiting for the Santa Cruz and Maverick to come to market because those vehicles are about a foot shorter than the Ridgeline, or other compact pickups, and will offer somewhat similar capabilities while still fitting in my garage without me having to tear out a 2 foot deep workbench and storage cabinets that span the width of the front of the garage. @@frankmorris4790 Glad your CRVs work out for you, but the bed in the Ridgeline could be useful for a lot more things than what I mentioned. For example, it doesn't have wheelwells intruding, so it's wide enough to lay plywood or sheetrock flat, and will carry quite a load of that type of cargo with the tailgate down, and if you carry any type of loose landscaping material in the bed, like a load of sand, dirt, or mulch, you can just hose the composite bed out when you're done, which I don't think you would want to do with a CRV or any other type of SUV. it will also tow a lot more than your CRV if towing is ever needed. I occasionally tow a small boat and utility trailer with my older Chevy pickup, but can't imagine a situation where I would need a tow capability greater than the 5k the Ridgeline offers. I watched a couple of UA-cam videos testing it's torque vectoring AWD capabilities and it was pretty impressive in where it could go offroad, albeit ground clearance is pretty low, but for most terrain other than rock crawling that shouldn't be a big issue. It went through sandy, muddy terrain just fine and scrambled right up a sandy, rutted, steep hill that the reviewer said the previous 3 AWD vehicles tested failed to climb. I currently own a 2011 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 sedan and an older, standard cab Chevy Silverado pickup. Both have been reliable vehicles but the Chevy is a 95 model with over 250k miles, and I'm seriously eyeballing something like the Ridgeline that can serve as both a passenger vehicle and still haul or tow all I need, replacing my two vehicles with one. As for the storage "trunk" under the bed, you could be right about it getting messy, depending on how it's used, but I don't think it would be a problem for how I would use it. It's completely water tight, and there are videos of people taking the vehicle through car washes, with the trunk staying bone dry. Anyway, it's made of composite material and has a drain plug, so it should be easy to clean. I'm waiting for the Santa Cruz and Maverick to come out before I pull the trigger on anything, but the only fault I have with the Ridgeline is that it's fairly expensive and is also a little too long to fit into my garage without tearing out my built in, 2 foot deep workbench and storage cabinets, while the Santa Cruz and Maverick, both being about a foot shorter, will both fit with a few inches to spare, and they should cost less to purchase. Everyone has their own priorities for vehicle needs though, and if your CRVs work for you, that's great. I have an older brother who buys a new CRV every 2 or 3 years, and both he and his wife love them. They don't use them as trucks though, as they live in the country on property with quite a bit of acreage and have a truck for truck duties. My biggest problem with CRVs is that they use CVT transmissions and I've never warmed up to those, although CVTs have improved over the years.
I have the strong feeling the Passport will be an option/version of the Pilot one day. The Pilot is slowly evolving into the Passport with that midnight edition. Plus the front end still looks very Odyssey-like IMO
@@austinfrazier7325 I’ve read the passport forums and all major review sites. There’s nothing to indicate that there will be any changes for 2022. It will be unchanged
Lmao have to call bullshit. Even with the V6. Here is what motortrend said. “Like the Pilot with which it shares a platform, the Passport is exclusively powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 paired with a nine-speed automatic. AWD is optional; FWD is standard. The V-6 develops 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque which, in our First Test, helped hustle the Passport to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.”
Slight change in aerodynamics aside, I find it strange that with the exact same engine and three additional gears, it still loses one MPG on the highway.
Years back, I had thought about dipping my toes into the truck market to better support mountain biking and backpacking nature lifestyle. My first and only test was the Tacoma and it turned me so far off trucks I didn't look anymore. I wish I would have known about the ridgeline being unibody as I very likely would have went with one - but I assumed all trucks were as wild tippy and horrible as the Taco was. I very well might test drive one of these in the next few years and see what's up. Thanks for the review!
One thing I liked about the old Ridgeline vs the new one was the old one was more body, I like how the old one is more boxy. And it seems like Honda is trying to make the new one more boxy. I like the boxy look of other trucks.
The ride in RLs is amazing, but be sure to check under your back carpet for water leaks...they have a water intrusion issue that most people have no idea about...

Car company's need to stop making all there cars look almost the same. Every car should be different and unique especially if they release new ones every year.
Too many badges on the rear. The fender flares look more like fender covers with no flare out . The gold wheels are meh. At least they chose the tire with semi better performance for the off-road. HPD ridgeline and PMC RDX should focus on engine performance and not stickers/badges/aesthetics.

I really love the new format of the videos and especially think the new music is welcomed. If I were to suggest one thing, it would be to keep the specs chart not slanted. It’s kinda distracting and obscures some of the footage of the engine bay.
I am soon in the market for a smaller truck and I'd like one of these except the infotainment is last gen. I hope they upgrade it soon, would be nice if it was upgraded before they do the entire truck. One can hope.
I agree with most of what he says feels like you’re driving a mini van, but I actually enjoy the smooth ride coming from a Tacoma. If you’re the kind of person that buys a truck specifically so you come off being more “manly” on the road the Ridgeline won’t boost your ego. It is low to the ground, but your family will appreciate not having to climb up in and out of a lifted truck. I disagree with the interior being dated or inexpensive looking I test drove the new Ranger and Colorado before buying this and those look way more dated and have cheaper build materials but they are cheaper msrp. There’s not a lot of torque out of low gears like most trucks wish that was a bit better, but plenty of power to do what I need. It’s a car like driving experience with a nice size bed to haul things fits in any garage with room to spare and easy to park for city dwellers. If your looking to go rough terrain rock climbing or back road mudding this isn’t built for that.
I have a lifted 2008 Ridgeline with 230K miles. Still going strong but should've annually been rustproofed here in southern Ontario (Canada). It is a mini-me that replaced an Avalanche which was kaput at 230K km. I have used my Ridgeline like a truck. Off road difficult trails, mud and snow. Loaded with rocks or firewood. I could fit my 400 ATV in the back but had to trailer my 1000 (didn't fit). I am seriously thinking about getting another Ridgeline.
The HPV trim should not add to the price of the truck but rather come with a discount for taking it off their hands. Unless you are towing regularly, functionally I think this truck is fine. What you may sacrifice occasionally in function, is made up in daily driving comfort and handling.
This could be such a great vehicle if Honda stops playing it safe. I love the concept but there is a way to give a truck feel while keeping its “car like” driving experience. I feel like Honda could do so much better with the power train, interior, and bed capability…. They can even go hybrid with this to add better fuel economy. Love the concept but huge miss for Honda IMO. They can do so much better.
Im not seeing your point. This ridgeline literally hits it's mark perfectly. This is designed for 90% of truck owners. This isn't for people towing large boats and other things. This is designed for people that need a pilot but occasionally tow something under 5000 pounds and need a open bed instead of a trunk. This literally hits the mark perfectly.
This is still more truck than most people need... a bit more aggressive styling would be welcome...hard to beat Honda's rep...( Tundra owner)....If only we got the Amarok...they’re filling a niche...They’re not trying to create an F250 Super Duty..( they already exist...
I bought 2013 with old style look. My wife like it so much she got a 2013 also a couple years back. We still like that look better. Robust look?! Nothing beefed up. Better springs more travel larger tires? What the…?
Can anyone explain to me why Honda loves to show the bed with two of their motorcycles, but they have never offered a Ridgeline in their motorcycle colors. Why not tie the two together?
This is basically a lukewarm review of the Ridgeline because they made the mistake of sending a stripped down version regardless of the HPD package. You have to wonder what idiot decides on these items. Bad move.
The design of Ridgeline was better suited to meeting my needs than any other midsize truck. However, it has 2 fatal defects. First it is not an off-road truck, so the standard AWD only adds complexity, decreases fuel economy, and adds $3,000 to the price when compared to the completion. If you live in a snow belt then disregard that comment. Second, it has one of the last remaining interference timing belt engines. Apparently, Honda has no problem saving $10-15 per vehicle when they know every customer will spend $1,000 between 60,000 and 100,000 miles to change the timing belt and water pump. And the HPD package is more than a $3,000 option for some graphics and tire package. Try buying a Ridgeline for less than $40,000.
Great video. Just ordered one (touring), will be delivered in Jan 22. Built quality, reliability and practicality and top priorities for me, that's why we are trading our '20 Passport touring for a Ridgeline.
Their ten speed is a much better transmission, and I can't understand why they don't use it in more vehicles. They use it in the Odyssey, so it is compatible with the six cylinder engine. My guess is that they either lack the manufacturing capability or are obligated by a pre-existing contract with ZF to purchase X number of transmissions.
You would think that with Hyundai and Kia knocking every design they produce out-of-the-park, that some of these other car manufacturers would up their game to make sure that they stay visually competitive with the other manufacturers? This truck, though not unattractive..... I would never do a double take if I saw it driving down the road like I would a Kia or a Hyundai!
@@dannielz6 I understand your point because I've owned five Japanese cars and they all gotten well over 200,000 miles and two had over 400k on them! But unfortunately we live in a society that people want style, cool features and looks along with their vehicles and quality is subjective and there are many cars that are close to Honda in quality given the fact that most people don't keep their cars much past 100k or so b4 buying another one!
@@dannielz6 Why would you think these things are mutually exclusive or an excuse for having a dated interior with terrible infotainment? A good looking Honda or Toyota is just as reliable as an ugly one. Any car today will go 100k miles with few problems and probably any non-turbo engine will go 200k miles or more.

Slight change in aerodynamics aside, I find it strange that with the exact same engine and three additional gears, it still loses one MPG on the highway.
12:48 Because its the base "Sport" trim
Wish they made a type s version from the Ridgeline and Odyssey with that 3.0 V6 tuBBo and 10 speedo
Was the last part of the video filmed underwater ?? 17:02
Why did Honda send out the base Sport model. I know they wanted to sell the HPD package but put that on an RTL-E for the reviews
Then it'll be very close to 50k.
Those fender flares are wayyyy too big
only with the HPD package, the normal ones look good, i agree those i hate the HPD package personally
That front facia though
No it's not
One thing I liked about the old Ridgeline vs the new one was the old one was more body, I like how the old one is more boxy. And it seems like Honda is trying to make the new one more boxy. I like the boxy look of other trucks.
Same I think the boxy look is better
The ride in RLs is amazing, but be sure to check under your back carpet for water leaks...they have a water intrusion issue that most people have no idea about...
Sofyan, thank you for talking about the tires! I would appreciate what the OEM tires on all your reviews moving forward! Not in depth but the essentials. Brand, Size and type...all season, all terrain etc...I see Tire Rack and you having a good alliance! Keep up the great work! Love the channel!!
I'm good with cloth seats ( cloth is always the right temperature) but, I gotta have a leather wrapped wheel!
The front end looks great now!
Agreed!
I feel the same way, & in the winter leather is just too cold
Yea before I had a garage I only wanted cloth since leather was either too hot or cold. Cloth is underrated.
@@caglioso I have a garage & still want cloth, well mine is part cloth & leather, but yeah very underrated
Nice cope
Car company's need to stop making all there cars look almost the same. Every car should be different and unique especially if they release new ones every year.
Are you a car designer? If you pay attention to the details, pretty much every brand has something unique to offer.
I agree there is no reason the Passport, Pilot, and Ridgeline need to look the same
Is easier to find parts 😆
That's like telling Volkswagen to stop making ugly ass cars except the Golf R and GTI lol
Too many badges on the rear. The fender flares look more like fender covers with no flare out . The gold wheels are meh. At least they chose the tire with semi better performance for the off-road.
HPD ridgeline and PMC RDX should focus on engine performance and not stickers/badges/aesthetics.
For the money - The Ridgeline is the clear winner. You get way more options for the money with the Ridgeline.
Winner of what?
@@bigdi77 The "More-for-your-money" and the "Way More Options' for your money winner. As in Pro's and Con's winner when deciding which Mid-Sized Pickup to buy. Ridgeline wins category - unless you're that .05% that wants to actually do more serious off-roading - then the Ridgeline is not for you.
5:10 unlike any other truck I’ve seen or been in there is actual seats and a drink holder in the tail gaye
Interio looks good and has reliable tech. Simple and user friendly.
That v6 just wants to rev! Love Honda engines. And this is enough truck for most people let’s be honest.
The next Gen Ridgeline needs the new TLX Type S 3.0L Turbo engine!
More power is always better
I'm surprised they didn't place the 10 speed auto in it.
I was too, not sure what the reasoning was there. I am not a fan of the HPD but I am loving my new Ridgeline.
What’s your pick for the best midsize truck?
Such good truck. You never go wrong with Honda products. Get one of these if you need this type of vehicle
Just get rid of that awful 9 speed auto.
Needs a slight lift
I have a lifted 2008 Ridgeline with 230K miles. Still going strong but should've annually been rustproofed here in southern Ontario (Canada). It is a mini-me that replaced an Avalanche which was kaput at 230K km. I have used my Ridgeline like a truck. Off road difficult trails, mud and snow. Loaded with rocks or firewood. I could fit my 400 ATV in the back but had to trailer my 1000 (didn't fit). I am seriously thinking about getting another Ridgeline.
any rust on your 08? have you changed the timing belt? i also live in southern ontario and thinking of getting the 22.
@@jay.0621 Yes to some rust. I wish I had done annual Krown. I replaced the timing belt at about 160K miles.
I wouldn't select the HPV package.
Ironically they made the face more like the 1st gen which everyone thought was ugly.. ( except me, i loved it)
They need to make the pilot look like the ridge line but with a shell on the back
The HPV trim should not add to the price of the truck but rather come with a discount for taking it off their hands. Unless you are towing regularly, functionally I think this truck is fine. What you may sacrifice occasionally in function, is made up in daily driving comfort and handling.
I opted for the HPD package when I bought mine and while I do wish it offer something as far as a performance gain, after 18k miles I love it.
👍🏽
Im not seeing your point. This ridgeline literally hits it's mark perfectly. This is designed for 90% of truck owners. This isn't for people towing large boats and other things. This is designed for people that need a pilot but occasionally tow something under 5000 pounds and need a open bed instead of a trunk. This literally hits the mark perfectly.
Not to mention that the bed capability is nearly tops in the class with nearly 1500lbs of payload capacity.
type r ridge line ?
They will reserve those upgrade and update next year.!business
You’re the best. Keep them coming
I disagree, I think the interior looks good and they kept it simple for easy use.
I'm convinced that if Redline did a review of a Caterpillar 797F industrial dump truck.....this bro would still check it's 0-60 time, lol.
Absolutely. 😂
@@theredline Do it Sofyan! 😂
Hey sofyan whats the best manual car in usa for a first time buyer ?
Most manuals from Honda or Mazda are easy to drive and learn on. We'd recommend starting there!
Chevy cruze
Civic Si
Civic
honda or mazda would be good.
This is still more truck than most people need... a bit more aggressive styling would be welcome...hard to beat Honda's rep...( Tundra owner)....If only we got the Amarok...they’re filling a niche...They’re not trying to create an F250 Super Duty..( they already exist...
You're right, honda needs to make a basic truck that has stuff like a dual tailgate but without fancy push-button start and good looks
I dig it, but why don't they just do the fender flares in the body color?!
Wonder what the new trim package would look like with a 3.5” lift kit that is available on that body style.
Seems like all the reviews are on the sport /HPD. Are they having production issues leading to less availability for higher trim levels?
I bought 2013 with old style look. My wife like it so much she got a 2013 also a couple years back. We still like that look better.
Robust look?! Nothing beefed up. Better springs more travel larger tires? What the…?
Looks like Honda made good use of their used parts bin.
You said it has a ZF transmission? I thought it was an in-house 9speed auto?
He talks out of his neck alot we can all tell pink is his favorite color but he likes to say masculine
i just bought one. I like it.
Where do you film this at? Area you drive around looks nice! Is it around Pennsylvania?
I wish they’d give you a center console. I hate the arm rest. It screams mini van
Can anyone explain to me why Honda loves to show the bed with two of their motorcycles, but they have never offered a Ridgeline in their motorcycle colors. Why not tie the two together?
Reported.
Because Honda auto division doesn’t talk to the motorcycle division. Sad really
I heard through the Honda grapevine, that a modest lift may be available as a Honda accessory.
“If you’re fatter than 300 pounds” 😂 💀
🤣😂
Do these trucks have timing belt or timing chain?
It looks more rugged and truckish
Looks way better
Otherwise, it looked like a Pilot/Passport with a truck bed IMO
For what it’s supposed to be... yes it is a good truck. It’s not a big boy truck or whatever the hate it gets 😂
As much I love Honda , the Ford Maverick gets near 30 mpg on highway and it is more agile and sporty to drive
I think the cabin looks great. Not sure what the issue is. Maybe they should throw some glitter and sparkly bits to bedazzle these journalists.
"The screen is very hateful" 😂 DAYUM
That truck look nice I love your videos
This is basically a lukewarm review of the Ridgeline because they made the mistake of sending a stripped down version regardless of the HPD package. You have to wonder what idiot decides on these items. Bad move.
Because of chip shortages, manufacturers are only releasing base models nowadays
Try buying a Ridgeline for less than $40,000.
what's up with the camera wave at the end of the video?
What is the issue with the wavy video starting around 3:37?
The DSLR camera is starting to fail. He even noted it in the video.
Great review. Calves looking incredible, btw
I have 2022 Honda Ridgeline sport oh I love it
Glad they have the bronze wheel option, I feel like every car has gone with black rims
Some people might mistaken "HPD" for Houston Police Department or any other H - city. 😆
Honolulu Police Department
How dare they give you the base model 😱
I thought the 2020 Ridgeline had a 10speed transmission.🤔
I love those wheels
Nice update but until all of the shortcomings identified in the video are fixed, I'm not spending 40k plus.
Nice stuff !!!
“Truck”
🥸🥸🥸🥸🥸
Any word on Honda HR-V 2022?
Nothing yet! We should be getting a 2022 Civic next week though!
Great video. Just ordered one (touring), will be delivered in Jan 22. Built quality, reliability and practicality and top priorities for me, that's why we are trading our '20 Passport touring for a Ridgeline.
I want a truck and thinking of getting a Tacoma. Now I'm in real thinking between Tacoma, Ridgeline, and Frontier.🤦 I'm not sure which one to get.🤷
F150 lightning?
@@compilationrewind4077 yeah that too, but with Ford having problems with their charger not sure.
IBIS wobble?
The front end might be more beefy looking but it is less aerodynamic. Glad I bought a 2020.
I really don't think most pickup buyers will consider aerodynamics when buying a truck 😂
@@vegetarianbacon718 which makes no sense at all. Even semi trucks are moving toward more aerodynamic shapes.
Starts in 2 nd gear unless you put it in sport mode.
NOW ALL WE NEED IS A RIDGELINE AND WITH A STRONG DIESEL ENGINE 💪💪
I would be more excited seeing sofyan in public than a kardashian sofyan if I ever meet you in real life I’m gonna mention this comment
3:35 wtf up with the crazy shaking?
HPD: HONDA POLICE DEPARTMENT 🤣🤣
You would think that with Hyundai and Kia knocking every design they produce out-of-the-park, that some of these other car manufacturers would up their game to make sure that they stay visually competitive with the other manufacturers? This truck, though not unattractive..... I would never do a double take if I saw it driving down the road like I would a Kia or a Hyundai!
Japanese cars have never prioritized flashy design. Reliability, value and performance are what made these brands the world's standard.
One thing that hasnt changed is the timing belt thats on this engine
It’s had a timing chain for the last 2 years…
This would look good in a half ton configuration
Needs better approach angle up front
Was the cameraan drinking @3:37 ?
I have a 17 sport and do love it, however, $40K for a sport is way too much. Mine was only $34K in late 17.
40k is a little much, im looking at this or a accord. It's a 12k difference not sure I can justify it.
I wonder how the Houston Police Department will feel about those graphics? Also, "First time in drag at a ball. Butch queen."
I know I'm supposed to be focusing on the Ridgeline but I can't help but stare enviously at Sofyan's svelte fit toned body! He's definitely lost the pandemic chub he was carrying!
