German experts to re-activate it and convert it to an H. bomb. However the device only partially initiates. The plutonium was material stolen or exported from the Savannah River plant to Israel. The nuclear material has a distinctive 'fingerprint' of isotopes which is how Ryan comes to know the device was not a Soviet provocation. The experts are sure of their findings they can state which reactor it came out of. The book also depicts mobilisation in Berlin, Germany after disguised terrorists cause Soviet & US tank battalions to start fighting each other. I believe that in the Jack Ryan universe, this event happens after The Hunt for Red October and Cardinal of The Kremlin. The football game in the book is the Superbowl, which occurs in Denver, Colorado.
The books in order of events went Patriot Games, Red October, Cardinal of the Kremlin, Clear and Present Danger, and the Sum of All Fears. But the movies don't always follow the same events, and omit many altogether. But this particular movie just butchers both the books and all the movies that came before it. Probably so they could have Affect and a love story all at the same time. Only 2 Clancy movies hold their own vs the books, Red October and Patriot Games. And those don't follow all that closely. CaPD movie adaption was just meh, it didn't pick up on the book well enough and some of the casting was weird. I never liked Clark's portrayal in it.

Nevermind how there would be already talk about creating a Homeland Security department with a mandate far broader than in our world. In fact if it was realistic Ryan would be at work. Since in this new world the CIA and the NSA are de facto being merged with the FBI under a far more expansive Homeland Security department. Closer to the KGB in mandate. And no no one would care about civil liberties after such a catastrophe. This movie betrays its naive 90s sensibilities by having nukes go off but the system seems barely changed. If nukes went off on US soil that would be the ultimate evidence that democracy is defective that's how it would be interpreted by the people. There would be no going back to normal. So no Ryan sitting calmly with his fiancee in a happy mood. That is just a scriptwriter not understanding how big an event they had and just treating it as an Oklahoma city but bigger.

In the movie Kadishev a hero, in the book he's the douche that got the world into this situation. It was his faulty intelligence that rogue soviet military units were blackmailing Narmonov with nukes that had convinced fowler that the soviet union had deliberately attacked the US and Narmonov had been overthrown in a political coup. His motivation was to try and leverage the CIA to take over Russia. In the book he is even more important than the movie depicts. He's essentially the "speaker of the house" for the Russian legislative body. Ryan talking to the head of the KGB afterwards, explains why it all went to hell in handbasket, and gives up Kadishev as an American spy (still saving the lying bastard's skin by convincing the russians he never actually gave real intelligence) in exchange for a prisoner release of another American spy.
"In America, you can always find party. In Russia, party find you." Sadly, these Hollywood interpretations of a burgeoning detente, or even working friendship between Russia and the United States seem strangely misplaced in February 2022. I hope I live long enough to see the day when the United States and Russia can be allies and not rivals or enemies.

In the movie Kadishev a hero, in the book he's the douche that got the world into this situation. It was his faulty intelligence that rogue soviet military units were blackmailing Narmonov with nukes that had convinced fowler that the soviet union had deliberately attacked the US and Narmonov had been overthrown in a political coup. His motivation was to try and leverage the CIA to take over Russia. In the book he is even more important than the movie depicts. He's essentially the "speaker of the house" for the Russian legislative body. Ryan talking to the head of the KGB afterwards, explains why it all went to hell in handbasket, and gives up Kadishev as an American spy (still saving the lying bastard's skin by convincing the russians he never actually gave real intelligence) in exchange for a prisoner release of another American spy.
It’s so crazy I get this in my recommendations, been thinking about this movie since the start of Russia Ukraine war.

Sadly, these Hollywood interpretations of a burgeoning detente, or even working friendship between Russia and the United States seem strangely misplaced in February 2022. I hope I live long enough to see the day when the United States and Russia can be allies and not rivals or enemies.
