    I always interpreted this scene as a warning: "You're a player now. You're important. Everyone is going to be watching and listening, including me." A helpful tip to his dear, departed friend's successor.

      I interpreted it as a Russian intelligence officer, being versed in Myers-Briggs and Neurolinguistic Programming, successfully read Jack's desire to be important and is developing Jack as an Agent for Russia.

    • @donalddade5643

      @@pro1105 Myers-Briggs is a personality assessment tool that intelligence officers use to assess a possible agent's susceptibility to recruitment, and to determine the proper approach. Neurolinguistic Programming is a technique that allows an officer to elicit information from an agent without him even being aware that he is being elicited. The writers knew nothing about espionage and had no idea that what was supposed to be a sweet, heartwarming coda to the story would set off alarm bells in anyone with ANY counter intel training at all and have precisely the opposite effect: He's not a kind Russian with a statesmen's bent to shepherd the post-Cold War superpowers safely through the Nuclear Age, he's a cold hearted agent of the Russian government who will use whatever leverage he has in order to benefit Russia, no matter how personal.

    • @FullPlaythroughs
      @FullPlaythroughs 2 роки тому

      To be fair it was a pretty low yield nuclear weapon, smaller than the Hiroshima bomb. You can use nukemap and explode a Hiroshima sized bomb around the site of the stadium and see the results, Washington is far enough away that there wouldn't be any real danger from the fallout, even if the wind blew the fallout directly over Washington DC it would only be about 1 rad per hour

      @@elric9992000 In reality if a nuke(even a low yield 5-9 kt) went off in Baltimore killing say 100k americans DC would become an armed camp overnight. Think of 9/11 but much much worse. Think of how long the Capitol was cordoned off after it was stormed.After an actual nuke goes off close to the capital DC would go on permanent lockdown mode.This movie unintentionally betrays its pre-9/11 roots in how casual it is with a catastrophe like that. Nevermind other details like no mention of a Patriot Act being in the works. In this world their equivalent would be far more extensive. No mention of the need for a Homeland Security department. This movie feels dated quite badly. If they wanted to be realistic soldiers would be around patrolling.

    The novel is massive. The bomb was an Israeli device lost in the Golan heights from a crashed Israeli fighter jet. An Arab faction enlist former E. German experts to re-activate it and convert it to an H. bomb. However the device only partially initiates. The plutonium was material stolen or exported from the Savannah River plant to Israel. The nuclear material has a distinctive 'fingerprint' of isotopes which is how Ryan comes to know the device was not a Soviet provocation. The experts are sure of their findings they can state which reactor it came out of.
    The book also depicts mobilisation in Berlin, Germany after disguised terrorists cause Soviet & US tank battalions to start fighting each other.
    I believe that in the Jack Ryan universe, this event happens after The Hunt for Red October and Cardinal of The Kremlin. The football game in the book is the Superbowl, which occurs in Denver, Colorado.

      The books in order of events went Patriot Games, Red October, Cardinal of the Kremlin, Clear and Present Danger, and the Sum of All Fears. But the movies don't always follow the same events, and omit many altogether. But this particular movie just butchers both the books and all the movies that came before it. Probably so they could have Affect and a love story all at the same time. Only 2 Clancy movies hold their own vs the books, Red October and Patriot Games. And those don't follow all that closely. CaPD movie adaption was just meh, it didn't pick up on the book well enough and some of the casting was weird. I never liked Clark's portrayal in it.

      You know what's really unrealistic? Not this but the fact that Ryan is in a happy mood. Sure WW3 was avoided barely but about 100k americans died and a chunk of a large city not far from DC got vaporised. In real life assuming Ryan is not a completely self centered jerk he would be in a dour mood over the failure to prevent an epoch defining terrorist attack far worse than 9/11. Nevermind how there would be already talk about creating a Homeland Security department with a mandate far broader than in our world. In fact if it was realistic Ryan would be at work. Since in this new world the CIA and the NSA are de facto being merged with the FBI under a far more expansive Homeland Security department. Closer to the KGB in mandate. And no no one would care about civil liberties after such a catastrophe. This movie betrays its naive 90s sensibilities by having nukes go off but the system seems barely changed. If nukes went off on US soil that would be the ultimate evidence that democracy is defective that's how it would be interpreted by the people. There would be no going back to normal. So no Ryan sitting calmly with his fiancee in a happy mood. That is just a scriptwriter not understanding how big an event they had and just treating it as an Oklahoma city but bigger.

    In the movie Kadishev a hero, in the book he's the douche that got the world into this situation. It was his faulty intelligence that rogue soviet military units were blackmailing Narmonov with nukes that had convinced fowler that the soviet union had deliberately attacked the US and Narmonov had been overthrown in a political coup. His motivation was to try and leverage the CIA to take over Russia. In the book he is even more important than the movie depicts. He's essentially the "speaker of the house" for the Russian legislative body. Ryan talking to the head of the KGB afterwards, explains why it all went to hell in handbasket, and gives up Kadishev as an American spy (still saving the lying bastard's skin by convincing the russians he never actually gave real intelligence) in exchange for a prisoner release of another American spy.

    "In America, you can always find party. In Russia, party find you."
    Sadly, these Hollywood interpretations of a burgeoning detente, or even working friendship between Russia and the United States seem strangely misplaced in February 2022. I hope I live long enough to see the day when the United States and Russia can be allies and not rivals or enemies.
