Murtagh died at Culloden in the books. Seeing the love fans had for the caractere and for the actor during cons, they made the surprise of Murtagh in America to please everyone
I think we've told you before that Murtagh died at Culloden in the books, but it's a lovely change in the show that we got to have him for a few more seasons, including Ardsmuir, the romance with Jocasta, and meeting Ian, William, Brianna, Marsali, and adult Fergus. And him being on the other side added depth to the Regulator fight. The books did have friends on the Regulator side, but no one as close to the Frasers as Murtagh. His dying words were the same. I wish they had kept a deleted scene. When Roger started heading across the creek, he stopped and said "Dad?" as if his ghost was with him. It hasn't been explicitly explained in the show, but Roger's father died in World War 2 on a mission for the RAF going over enemy lines (then his mother died in the Blitz, which is why he went to live with her uncle, the Reverend Reginald Wakefield). So when Roger found himself on a mission crossing enemy lines, it brought to mind his birth father. I'll leave it at that because I don't want to spoil anything.
Oh dear, I've watched this episode a dozen times or more and yet I always cry during the Murtagh scene where he dies, and watching it again with you made me cry even harder because of your reaction. It is such a privilege to watch a newcomer to the show fall in love with all the characters we all love. Thank you Imon
Such a heartbreakingly memorable episode. Brought back memories of when I first watched it. The tears. The Kleenex! These last episodes are so great: I am happy to be with you on this ride!
Indeed, the same actor who played Dougal now plays his own son, although in the books the son had to look younger (about 30-35 years old) and with very green eyes like Geilis's. Later the character appears again but with another actor.
One of the few episodes i skip upon a rewatch. Great reaction as always, however a small suggestion is to up the audio of you a little bit. I'm on headphones and had to up my volume a ton.
So heartbreaking losing Murtagh, but I take comfort in knowing that we had more of him here. In the books, he passed in Culloden. Jamie lost sight of him, and we never heard about him again. 🥺 Edit: well, heard about him, sure. Just not HIM in an alive sense. The show gave his character more screen time then he had lines in the books. Will forever be grateful for the extra time we got with him.
I teach American history. The typical narrative is that the American Revolution began in Massachussetts. I’ve heard from some that in North Carolina they teach that the Revolution started with the Regulators at Alamance. It does make some sense, can anyone from NC confirm.
LOL We all screamed and raged when Jamie put that coat on way back when this first aired! (Where they would have gotten one with wide enough shoulders, I can't imagine.) Oh how we moaned!
It was Sam's suggestion that he wear the coat. They're both producers this season, so have a little more say. I think he was right, certainly added drama ! The words Murtaugh says as he dies were what he said to Jamie as he died at Culloden in the book. Sam was fantastic !
If it was Mr. Heughan's idea to put Jamie in a red coat I'm sure he got a few giggles out of it but I think it should earn him 15 minuets in purgatory for it. lol No, you're right, it certainly added a bit of drama. I remember that part in the book, bits of what happened at Culloden sneak back into him memory now and then and he remembered finding Muraugh injured on the field. It would be hard to loose someone who'd been such a vital part of his life.
I watch this episode at work, work can u imagine.. crying everyone asking whats wrong nd all i could say was Ghoistidh nd kept crying mann i hated it yoo

R.I.P. Murtagh. One of the best characters in television history. The world would be a better place if everyone had a Murtagh.
Murtagh was the first highlander Claire met when he saved her from the redcoats. Their friendship does go back to the beginning.

This w Murtagh was THE HARDEST scene I’ve watched in this series. Absolutely heartbreaking 😭😭😭😭
Yes, that is the actor Graham McTavish playing his grown son.
Buck is Dougal and Geillis' son and I think Roger is Buck's 6 x gr-grandson.

At the time of the original airing, there was a two week pause between this & the next episode, you're lucky to roll right into it.

Murtagh died the way he lived, a rebel fighting against tyranny and protecting his kin.
