The integrated assessment models have been one of the several key planks that have misdirected humanity since their inception. It's what these inadequate models don't include that's important. There's way too many signifant affective factors not included. Hansen is strong on this. His latest paper- global warming in the pipeline is instructive, highlighting earth energy imalance ( off the charts in the last 14 years) and the regulations of the IMO mandating reductions in the sulpur content of heavy and bunker fuel oil in ocean going shipping. These two factors alone make for stark reading. The IPCC reports omit all this while including NETS- negative emission tech, that isn't proven to work at scale. As Andreas points out, adaptation is an illusion without mitigation of the problem. Thanks to Andreas and people like him that work tirelessly to inform populations while working as activists to change the criminal operating systems of our civilisation and the mafia in suits that are in charge.
What Hansen doesn’t spell out is that 3 of the 4 of the big grain producing regions still have high levels of SO2. 2 of these guys are doing everything under the sun to increase aerosol masking by burning ever greater amounts of coal.
I’m a horticulturist Earthworms have been gone in Rome ga…Floyd county…for 3 years and now others are commenting it’s the same where they are. No fly larvae in trash cans for 3 yrs. Very few birds, very few bugs, plants are blooming way out of cycle and vegetable plants stopped growing after 2 nights warmer than days . Adios amigos
Good morning. Thank you for your observations. You are naturally correct in what you see coming given what is happening in the biosphere. I visit the woods and fields I grew up amongst in the earl 1960s and the silence and lack of wildlife is eerie. There is no longer any need to clean windshields and headlights of insects - they are not there. Sometimes I listen to the 'experts' and think ' don't they get out into nature '? Do they listen to the growers of food? The idea that there is anything we can do from this position is utter foolishness and prevents us from 'bracing for impact' . The insect and plankton populations are down 90% and 50% respectively - shortly this will impact the larger life forms. Adios indeed. Thanks again. Kind regards from UK
@@geofffriend4161 This is genuine conspiracy theory nonsense. See "Meta-analysis reveals declines in terrestrial but increases in freshwater insect abundances" by Roel van Klink published in science for a modern overview of insect population studies. To highlight the most important findings, water insect populations are up, not down, terestrial insect populations are down ~20% since the 1970, specifically in urban areas like Chicago, but not in rural areas where crop cover by things like corn and wheat are actually associated with increases in insect populations, and there is no correlation with global warming.
I’m golfer. Same amount of earthworms for years. Driest summer ever 6 years ago, wettest fall ever last year. Largest amount of Goose shit near water side. Just stay away from the cities as you can. Tja🤡
Yes. The cities are full of pest control. I have 5 acre wildlife sanctuary 12 miles from city center. I let the weeds grow in the floodplain (and sort out and remove invaders that washed downstream.) I plant my trees with the birds in mind, leaving open space for the falcons to hunt. I have pest control in the form of hawks and owls for the rodents and bats and swallows for insects. I had a coyote coming through a hole in the fence for bunnies, but when neighbors caught sight of a cougar on their cameras, I sadly patched the hole s/he was using. Made me sad. (I later discovered that the bunnies s/he was hunting are endangered. feel like I was able to communicate with the coyote and the hawk to leave the chickens alone. The only ones I've lost have been to neighbors' dogs. Dunno about a cat. Putting nature first is a state of mind. All beings can live together peacefully if they are fed. Nature abhors imbalance. Imagine what life will look like as homeostasis is restored. We have much to do to be included in the species that survive. We won't eat without the bugs and birds. I have lots of worms and lots of robins eating them. I am so grateful.
Something that is never discussed is the second derivative of CO2 concentration. The historically unprecedented rate of change of CO2 concentration causes adaptation of the atmospheric pattern of flow ( eg, jet stream) that results in extreme weather until an equilibrium is re-established. Constantly changing CO2 concentrations over short periods of time will result in a steady state of extreme weather as the atmosphere will always be seeking a new equilibrium. The more technology used to manage the content of the atmosphere the worse it will be. The natural processes are too complex to be modelled. Solutions to the Navier Stokes equations are almost always chaotic.
Yes its a complex chaotic system with feedback loops that are not well understood outside of the atmosphere, let alone the biosphere. A model is a model but the outcomes of anthropogenic climate change are negative to the effect we are facing the sixth mass extinction and societal collapse as we know it
A great pity they co-opted the term 'overshoot' to describe this policy/ideology. There has been debate since the early 80s on 'overshoot, the ecological basis of revolutionary change' (Catton 1980) and that humankind has overshot its ecological boundaries - and continues to do so at an accelerated pace - is exactly our predicament
Right, the Great Waves of Change are here and we are not prepared. I read this revelation years ago, now I'm watching it happen. We have solutions and need to make changes we aren't pursuing because the policy makers who most need to change have not yet woken up to the new reality - our immediate future will be one of ongoing, escalating, worsening crises, around the globe.
Geo-engineering is the only thing keeping the US Midwest on artificial life support. It’s why St. Louis only hit 108F in July 2012. It’s called Big Coal. Sulfates from coal only kills millions, shutting it down will kill billions or more accurately speed up the death of billions.
Per Alan Watts a conversation with myself gmo crops were an emergency measure taken to expand the life of civilization to give us a chance to address the crisis instead we used the opportunity to party perhaps the crops need to fail we had the opportunity and wasted it.
We are not experiencing an agricultural collapse ...Food surpluses are so high we waste up to a third and we put it into ethanol and biogas production ,people only starve because we let them .Nasa report a 6 percent greening of the planet .If we see a collapse in the future it will be down to climate alarmists creating the problem .
"It's what these inadequate models don't include that's important." -- Exactly so, the blind belief that the models are relevant to problem at hand gives rise to idiotic solutions based on greed and selfishness. The current engineering methods of mankind is not sufficient to solve this problem. Mankind needs to drastically reduce consumption and change its economic systems. I expect this will happen out of necessity. Growth capitalism is not the only possible economic system, is it?
'Musk & the Shareholders' - has always been a rather small group. They can't ruin the planet. The many who help, work for, buy from the Great Greedy are too stupid. Possibly blinded by the hope of being rich and free....... In short: You have to be stupid in the first place to choose greed.
I very much appreciate the honesty in this presentation. Also loved the line "one of the many acronyms littering climate discourse". Beautiful. I loved the presentation. It speaks to the discourse that we hear as we face the reality of climate change. The discourse is only going to get much crazier and there will be endless finger-pointing. I equate it to a tornado of all people swirling around yelling and screaming into the void of chaos.
Excellent presentation. I learned a lot from this. It's a great pity that 90% or more of the population thinks we just have to get the recycling sorted into the right bag and we've done our share.
If all you do is point the finger at individuals and not at the system that incentives there behaviours well you can fire them all up into the sun today, capitalism will merely re-create them by the time you are grey or recently dead. The fault is a system, not just an aspect of it. You could stop all fossil fuel use and investment tomorrow and humanity would still be heading for collapse via collapse of the ecology due to massive over consumption of raw resources in order to service perpetual growth of profits, fossil based or not. Capitalism is the problem, not what shares people are incentivised to buy within it.
In Finland we haven't had that bad summers. But yet still droughts and too much water in the end of the season to grow good crops... Having green, rotten, bruised and blight potatoes in last month is next by supermarket... No other potatoes sold. Losing 10%, 10%, 30%, ... crops while not having similar extremes like in Mediterranean area has had. Life is getting harder and there could be coming shortages. Our media has even started to prepare people for worse food by claiming that our food varieties have peaked... The downhill has started. Even in the Northern Europe.
In Sweden it's all denial, denial, denial. The government or media doesn't care and are brainwashing people by omitting the crisis, by just not talking about it.
I have always thought that humans on this planet will only truly wake up to the climate crisis when the crops they depend on for their food start to fail. It is only then that all the people on this planet will finally wake up to the true scale of the climate crisis, and of course by then it will be too late to change much of anything for the better on this planet!
@@anthonycooper3191 Sorry, it's not working that way. When crops starts failing, we will buy food from the weakest and poorest people. Even if they will starve to death. It'll take some time before we run out of money and even more crops dies, so we end up to that poorest one alive situation... We have enough food to feed everyone currently, but we don't do that.
Part of the problem, according to the maverick economist, Steve Keen, is that almost all economists chose to live in a fantasy world of their own making. In this world only the agricultural part of the economy will be affected by a +6 deg. C amount of temp increase, so the damage to the GDP will be minimal. That is just 3% less that the amount of GDP growth with no temp increase. But, no farming is, no food is, we all starve & die.
Big oil corporations exist because they have corporate charters issued by the government. One solution, that might regrettably prove necessary, is the draconian solution: simply pull the corporate charters. “Sorry, you can no longer legally conduct business within our jurisdiction.” If, they walk and abandon their infrastructure, the government simply steps in, takes ownership and repurposes it to produce durable Carbon-based construction materials such as the cable for a space elevator, affordable housing, etc. Subsidies could then be transferred to renewable energy providers and Carbon technology startups.
@@user-yq2wk6yg8s to place a space freight elevator into space you need Carbon cable. It's very strong and way lighter than steel. It's a long way to outer space so the cable will be heavy. The upper end will be rotating with the Earth so the cable will be taut. Just hop on the elevator push the button and get off at the hotel in outer space. Place cargo in the freight elevator push the button and send it to the space port in outer space. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator
Incidentally, the reason that we have all these problems, such as climate change and other forms of pollution, and cultural exploitation, is BECAUSE corporations are not required to fulfill a clear ethical mandate that INCLUDES ecological protection in order to become established in the first place. Such a mandate might be similar to what I call my three "Laws of Ethics & Sustainability", applicable to ALL sentient species that reside within the Universe for all time! Here they are: First, All sentient species must recognize that they are part of an ecosystem and totally dependent upon it for their health and survival. Thus all actions must serve to enhance the capacity resilience, diversity, integrity, diversity and stability of both the sentient species and its ecologically-based life-support system to ensure the long-term survival of the species. Stated more simply, the sentient species, through their actions as keystone species and planetary stewards, must create an ecosystem that provides their progeny an ecosystem that is BETTER able to provide for the health and survival of the species than the one that they inherited from their parents. Second, they must propagate their species (and their ecologically-based life-support system) throughout the universe wherever alien life cannot be found, thus increasing their potential for survival. Third, they must protect and defend this life from hazards or threats, arising from both internal and external sources that, if unchecked, would harm the life contained there in. That's it! How the corporations, organizations and government agencies fulfill this triple mandate is left up to the entity. Thus, it is a performance standard NOT a prescription. Follow these three laws and your species will live FOREVER (have eternal life) and continue evolve into a moral species (like unto (a) god). Fail to follow these laws and, by your own actions, the species will go extinct (and be replaced by another species who will then have its chance). No gods need be invoked to punish or save. Our fate is in our own hands. Rather than strive to consume more and more energy to become a Type I Kardashev species (which, lacking ethics, does not lead to the advancement of a civilization and simply produces a larger hammer to be used for self-extinction), we should strive to become MY Type I moral civilization - one that has successfully created an ethical and ecologically sustainable planetary wide civilization. Let’s do it, let’s become a Type I ETHICAL civilization!

Our "leaders" should eat more nutritious foods, that way they have less of a chance to make dumb decisions. Better yet, voters should eat them so that they will have less of a chance to elect dumb politicians and lawmakers.
People see global warming as a problem. The problem is greenhouse gases that warm the planet and acidify the oceans. Climate happens in the troposphere, and the troposphere holds only 2,3% of all the extra heat, the oceans absorb 93,4% of the warming, the rest going into land and ice. In short, climate change is only 2,3% of the problem as opposed to global warming which is measured in watts per square meter at the surface of the tropopause with satellites. The measure for 2022 was 3,4 watts per square meters, It was 1,8 back in 1979. Never has the Earth warm this fast, see paleo-climatology.
Another thing that is not talked about is the destabilization and possible long term elimination (?) of the mid latitude atmospheric circulation cell. The implications of this possibility are significant. This simplification would result in northerly migration of deserts (at the point of contact between the Hadley and the Polar cells where cold dry air would now be sinking) and precipitation (and accumulation of snowpack due to warm moist air now RISING (rather than cold dry air falling) at the poles giving rise to renewed glaciation. Given the dire consequences, is this the atmospheric circulation pattern that we want to create? If so, keep pumping GHGs into the atmosphere!
Seeing current energy amounts that Earth takes (~+2Watts/m^2), there is hardly any chance to stay under 2C warming. We are overshooting 2C already. There is no budget left for 2C. And that does not even include aerosols, that adds even more temperature rise to the mix. Hansen et al. paper says that we are currently at 2,55C when all components are calculated in. And that does not include coming tipping points. We could try to come back around 2C, if there is some magical mean to take lots of ghg's from the air. So far these means does not exist. Antarctica sea ice is currently at so low level (2,67 million sq km's missing), that it will gain huge amounts of energy in coming summer. That could disrupt Antarctica's glaciers, like Thwaites, causing rapid sea level rise.
Use of trees (and other perennial species) can be viable IF such perennials are used as a multipurpose functional resource as food/fodder/fuel/human & animal habitat and NOT planted solely as pure monoculture stands for use as commercial GHG emission offsets thus occluding and displacing other land uses. It is important to realize that polycultures are significantly MORE productive for food production and MORE efficient at ecological capture of Carbon than monocultures. Monocultures are ONLY more efficient for machines and for the capitalist’s that own them.
Why don't we talk more about the Aerosol masking effect as a side effect of the burning of fossil fuels and how additional future warming is simultaneously masked by this effect. Wouldn't stopping the burning of fossil fuels lead to abrupt catastrophic warming? It might be unavoidable to not have some form of solar radiation management in conjunction with shutting down the fossil fuel industry. Also if you would consider that the burning of fossil fuels in itself has been one big geo-engineering project since the start of the industrial revolution. The terrifying solution might be that we need a similar long-term and large-scale project to reverse some of its negative consequences. The question is who will be in charge of such a undertaking and can it be part of a radical democratic and anticapitalist movement?
I have listened to half of the lecture and I have to say I am a little disappointed in many ways. One is the skepticism of the capitalist response. But the other is the speaker's lack of addressing the true overshoot problem, which is our ecological footprint and the basic business model of capitalism operating infinitely on a finite planet.

Dear Mr. Kuzyk, We’re looking forward to your article Census Villages and the Ecological Footprint: Alternate Data Sources, Policy Analyses, and Communication soon being published in Ecological Indicators.
We are not going to change... it's a stark maddening reality. Collapse is the most likely scenario to unfold but it won't be like the movies ... it'll happen over many decades.
Upshot: If it's not about control, we're not being serious. Really? What about all the disasters we are managing to prevent every day precisely because that control is not possible?
70000 people flew off to a week at the beaches and 5 star hotels of Dubai at $2500/night to their 28th annual party called COP 28. They swarmed in with their private jets and helicopters, much of their partying paid for by struggling taxpayers. The topic as usual was how to contain the greed and misuse of fuel by shivering taxpayers braving the Northern winter's cold struggling to pay their heating bills. One Marxist among the partiers had a solution to soaring food prices the taxpayers are facing due to lack of access to fuel - "Let them eat bugs" he exclaimed as he washed down his _fois gras_ with a gulp of Dom Perignon.

"Has anyone suggested mandatory accounting in the schools for green capitalism?" Unfortunately, "green capitalism" is an oxymoron: It's core values (profit imperative, drive for growth, valuing of money not nature) ALL drive us toward ecological collapse. Tp prevent collapse, we must replace capitalism with an economic models that fits the laws of nature.

One reason adaptation is popular with capitalists is the investment adds to GDP and creates new wealth creating opportunities for the owners of capital. Mitigation requires moving away from fossil fuels and reduced consumption of high carbon products and services, so reducing GDP and stranding assets. The profit making opportunities for capitalists will be lower particularly as mitigation also requires increased government spending.
Everybody speaks about policy making, but I think, the biggest problem is the mainstream population behavior. We all have to stop buy oil, coal and gas and products from these, driving cars, flying by plane. And most of all make this carbon neutral behavior cool. 🤷🏻♂️
Unfortunately Malm is using the term “Overshoot” in an overly simplistic and misleading way (and it appears other Europeans are doing this too.) Overshoot, if it is to be properly understood with regards to the climate catastrophe, should be understood as William Catton defines it in his seminal work “Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change”. There Catton puts forth a much more sophisticated and thorough definition of overshoot that is far better for understanding the situation we are in. It’s disappointing that someone like Malm, who is so well respected, and others like him, are apparently quite naive regarding this. Please read Catton’s work, as well as those who have followed in his footsteps. It will give you all a much better understanding of the situation than Malm provides.
@@RustOnWheelsthis lecturer plays the angry blame game. William Cotton understands that humans and other organisms naturally tend to exploit and exhaust their environments. That is the way of life and of this world. That's who we are. What an angry socialist.
When Malm uses the word overshoot, he means in the sense that it is used in the mainstream. He is talking about the way large corporations and climate summits use the word, not the way Catton uses it. Catton's use of overshoot is referring to overshooting our planet's carrying capacity for human life and Malm is talking about overshooting the climate limits set up in the Paris Accords that is a different concept on the modern political stage. These are two different concepts with two different discourses I don't understand what is so hard to grasp about that. It seems unfair to call Malm naive in this sense, in other interviews he is completely aware of the great likelihood of societal collapse and disaster that Catton talks about.
Adaptation will not treat everyone in similar ways. All does not get any help even when they lose everything they owned. And that includes rich contries too.
Will the climate movement ever reflect on the fact that it failed? That they way of doing things isn't successful and the more important people in it are, the more they might be part of the problem?
It should, but how do we approach this problem now that it's basically too late to do anything about it and people are just far too greedy for this planet?
The title of this video says it all-it IS too late. All talk about the climate-in fact the biosphere as a whole-amounts to nothing more than an academic exercise at this point. We’re obviously not going to change our ways in any significant degree and it’s way too late in the game to make any difference so, we’re left with the task of merely chronicling the demise of human civilization if not our actual extinction on this planet.
I found only one error in this man's entire speech. I can't remember where it was and I am not going to hunt it down and fish it out for posting here. I will just give a brief review and say that his talk gets high honors from me. He has his facts straight. Oops wrote to early at about 56:15 he accidentally says that solar engineering will reduce emissions quickly, I think he misspoke and it is clear he must have meant global average surface temperature.
I don't think that thing is going to work out. I doubt anybody's done anything beyond a 'back of a fag packet' analysis before concluding that it is feasible and a winner (if they started off as believing) or that it is a blind alley (if, like me, they cannot see any way it could achieve anything.) BTW, the label he gives it is 'solar geoengineering' - but the writing is not easily visible in the video, and he's rather a long way from the microphone and off camera, when he first mentions it.
My country is the richest, highest carbon 👣 per capital by a long shot. Almost half of my country follows a party still in denial, actively impeding climate catastrophe mitigation. In fact many would vote to reverse the minisule progress to reduce fossil ⛽ dependency. Oh, we have the biggest military, by a long shot as well.
We are celebrating a new record high for oil extraction. Higher than what we saw under either of the Bush boys or The Donald. Seems our administration’s war on Big Oil has been about as successful as Project Ukraine.
There is a technology similar to direct air capture. It is the Allam cycle natural gas power cycle. I am unclear, but if this technology could use say biomass, the process would carbon negative.
Mitigation undermines profits and undermines the ability of the wealthy to maintain their selfish narcissistic lifestyles. In contrast, Overshoot requires capital and geoengineering technology (which are owned by big business and big government), the use of which allows big business and big government to PROFIT handsomely from the very pollution that THEY created and to simultaneously maintain their lavish lifestyles by so doing! Moreover, it allows them to determine who receives this life-support technology (namely themselves) and who is allowed to suffer, die, become refugees, or attack and be labeled and treated as dissidents and terrorists -- namely those that disagree. It also allows them to control the population by owning and controlling their life support infrastructure. "Either vote for us and support our policies or suffer the same fate as those who do not." Unfortunately, THAT is the world that the DID NOTHING generations are bequeathing to future generations. It makes me so angry. What a bunch of shameful narcissistic cowards, and that is EXACTLY how history will regard such generations... The "DID NOTHINGS"
They are committed to the ethos of every crisis offers opportunity to the Big Sharks. Now the earth's resources and basic weather related environment are at stake, they can't see that what will be left by continuing down their path won't be worth inheriting. Truly this is madness, and the proper response from the rest of us is unprintable here. I'm surprised it hasn't already started happening.
It cannot be said that I did nothing. All my life I have done something. I certainly tried my best. I worked in the environmental and ecological restoration industry as a consultant. I worked in emergency and disaster response, management, relief and prevention. I worked to simulate past, current and future disasters and to recommend remedial actions to mitigate and prevent their adverse consequences. I taught at the university. I had my own consulting business. I had an off-the-grid permaculture farm and taught others how to do the same. I am now a futurist and science fiction writer warning, increasing the awareness and providing some solutions to future generations so that they will be better able to deal with the consequences bequeathed to them. Humans have only three responsibilities: First, to insure that future generations inherit a world that is healthier, more diverse, more resilient and more capable of meeting their subsistence life support needs without doing harm to others or to their ecological life support system. Second, to terraform other worlds and propagate Terran life throughout the universe were life cannot already be found. And third, to defend and protect that life from those who would destroy it. Anything else is harmful, evil, self-destructive, irresponsible, ignorant, insane, criminal, stupid, immature, immoral, illogical and narcissistic. The world is full of such people. I’m very glad that I’m NOT one of them!
I think that the Bible summarizes our mandate best: “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you” with “others” defined as current and future humans and their ecologically-based life support system (which requires the support of all species to continue to function) and “Be fruitful and multiply” (said to all species living at all times and places in the universe) and your species will have eternal life as your descendants in the heavens will be more numerous than all the grains of sand upon the beach. Fail to obey and your species by its own sinful decisions and actions will suffer eternal death (aka go extinct!). No gods need be evoked to punish or save. We do it to ourselves. That explains the Fermi paradox. The universe is a high pass filter. Only the ethical survive. Thus, the purpose of the universe is to create an ethical being. That works for me. I have no difficulty, God or no God, reconciling ethics and evolution.
I wonder what people in 10 years will think about the level of alarmism in this video. The level of certainty about the climate would be amusing if it wasnt so shared by so many people. Madness in action..
Congratulations, that proposal to light up the rainforests 24/7 is the dumbest idea I've heard in a long time. No plant physiologists were injured in the making of this clownshow.
It is of course completely correct to criticize the profit-making greed of the fossil fuel companies. But the fact is that it is just because of all the hundreds of millions of human beings on this planet who are buying the petrol to fill-up their cars because they are too lazy to use public transport, all the people buying the vast quantities of products that are shipped and flown around the world to satisfy their endless desires to consume. Just consider the effects of hundreds of millions of people heating up their homes through a northern hemisphere winter, let alone all the other fossil fuel-usage, cars, etc, happening at the same time! It is the 8 BILLION people who eat all the food grown on land that has been cleared to grow crops all across the planet. It is just because humans cannot curb their endless desires to consume that is the main cause of the present planetary-wide crisis. It is all of us 8 billion humans living on this planet Earth who are literally eating-up, devastating and destroying everything here, just because there are so many of us here that we are all of us together, just like a vast swarm of locusts devouring everything on this planet in our endless desires to consume!
"hundreds of millions of human beings on this planet who are buying the petrol to fill-up their cars because they are too lazy to use public transport" Idk, using public transport seems like less work than making $1000s to buy a car and then having to get a license to get a car. The problem is those fossil fuel ghouls don't want to fund public transport. I agree that people are ultimately responsible but the ones benefiting the most are the most responsible, that's just reality.
Thunderf00t said it better and I suggest everyone look at his 3-4 videos in the last few months on climate change and the legacy we will be leaving behind. The point being is that even if we stopped all the burning of carbon it would be our grandkids and great grandkids that will truly start noticing the difference. S.A.I. is the only option on the table today to buffer mankind.
I will suggest looking into "Earth Overshoot Day" Imagine running out of your renewable yearly budget on August 2nd (2023), and having to borrow to future generations to get to the end of the year. Every year, we pass the overshoot day earlier and earlier. Just consider forest and fishery in those renewable resources. Commercial fishing won't be viable by 2048, and that just considering over-fishing.
Capitalism is a political and economic system in which industry is operated by private companies for profit. Companies must increase profit or else they go out of business. As fixing climate change is not profitable it follows that capitalism cannot fix the problem of climate change. Note that you can have industrialisation without capitalism by changing the private profit motive to a planned economy instead. This is arguably better as you can more easily internalise the costs associated with environmental destruction.
@@simonhorlickyou only have to look at the origins of capitalism and climate emergency to understand their leftist origins .Both are the result of ideological models and don’t reflect reality .
I mean sure, but capitalism literally has baked in it consumerism and economic practices that are absolutely damning to the environment. You can blame industrialization if you want (it ain't wrong) but an economic system centered around consumerism just multiplies the negative effects industrialization already has.

Well the coal mining equipment is doing further damage to the environment so who is really the extremist there? The ones only thinking $$$ are what matters or people that realize there is more to life than that?
*CO2 re-heating , what nonsense !* In no case can CO2, and for several independent reasons, be the cause of any climatic variations. Humans even less! Because the order of magnitude of the anthropogenic flux of CO2 is very much less than 1% of that of the natural fluxes of the carbon cycle .... and therefore even if the CO2 had the magical-climatic properties attributed to it by the IPCC (pure hypothesis for play) this flow would be easily absorbed by the regulatory mechanisms of this cycle ; photosynthesis alone would bring , after a short period of transition and adaptation of a kinetic nature due to the characteristic durations of plant growth (forests, crops, meadows, phytoplankton, etc.) , a new equilibrium would be reached with an increase in the atmospheric level of CO2 much lower than 1% (proportionality of small variations) , especially since plant life is deficient in CO2 (when trees appeared at the beginning of the Cambrian the CO2 level was more than 15 times higher than today). This is so true that, in some greenhouses , CO2 is injected in order to promote the growth of plantations (the only real greenhouse effect of CO2 !). And if the concentration of CO2 increases further , the multiple other causes are not difficult to identify , it can only be something favorable to plants and therefore to Life in general. The observed climatic variations which are not so extraordinary or catastrophic, on the contrary , can find much more plausible causes such as the interaction between the solar magnetic field, the terrestrial magnetic field, the fluxes of cosmic, solar and galactic, rays. . This interaction (spallation phenomenon) strongly influences the formation of clouds , particularly during the nocturnal phase and therefore on the much more significant greenhouse effect that these produce and particularly therefore during this phase where the Earth sheds its energy towards the starry sky and the depths of the Universe at 3 Kelvin. Especially since, since the 1870s, the Earth's magnetic field has particularly weakened. Especially since the flow of cosmic rays coming from the Sun is particularly variable, following the fluctuations of its magnetic field and its overall activity. This interaction is also responsible for the phenomenon of the aurora borealis, and we could see, particularly in this month of November 2023, the strong correlation between aurora borealis descending to very low latitudes (southern France) and regularly impressive and sometimes torrential rains (thus induced by increased cloud production due to the increased spallation phenomenon itself resulting from a drop in the Earth's magnetic field and an increased flux of cosmic rays). . Claude Sponem, physics professor. .
"In no case can CO2, and for several independent reasons, be the cause of any climatic variations." Sorry, a mountain of research proves that to be false. Maybe go read the research so you can learn how it works? Human excess CO2 emissions total about 3% per year of the size of the total carbon cycle, but like making $100K a year but spending $103 K a year, our excess emissions drive global CO2 levels higher year after year. We have raised global CO2 levels more than 50% since 1776. "when trees appeared at the beginning of the Cambrian the CO2 level was more than 15 times higher than today" During the Cambrian, there was little to no life on land. The explosion of life was marine life. Furthermore, you may be a physics professor, but here's a tip about biology and botany: All species and ecosystems do best when the conditions they evolved under and are adapted to remain stable--too-rapid changes in those climate conditions cause mass extinctions of life. We are already seeing profound harms to species and ecosystems all over the world due to man-made global warming. The magnetic field has little effect on global temps.
@@HealingLifeKwikly here are some beautiful statements!. *relationship : Flow concentration:* It is easy to demonstrate that the order of magnitude of the anthropogenic flow of CO2 is very much less than 1% of the natural flows of the carbon cycle. And therefore, if the variations in atmospheric concentration were only due to humans (to this anthropogenic flux
*Other causes than CO2!* Other causes, much more credible than the very necessary for Life and quite innocent CO2, can explain the *local* climatic variations observed, *which are in fact nothing extraordinary* [1.2 ° C in a century and a half] ! Below you will find a much more *plausible* hypothesis as being *one* of the causes of the observed *local* climate variations, CO2 cannot, and for several independent reasons, have the harmful role attributed to it ! This cause *a little more plausible than the magico-climatic properties of CO2*, is *THE ***_SIGNIFICANT_* SUBSTANCE* of the *EARTH MAGNETIC FIELD* since the *1870s* ! On the one hand, the magnetic poles are moving and moving faster and faster (~ 50 km/year, 500 km in ten years), and, on the other hand, the intensity of the Earth's magnetic field is dropping by significantly and more and more quickly... However, the Earth's magnetic field interacts with [and protects us from] *cosmic rays* (flux of protons, electrons, atom nuclei and other charged particles, but also neutrons, neutrinos, gamma rays, etc.) coming from the Sun but also from the Galaxy. Part of them is diverted, another part trapped at the level of the Van Allen belts. These charged particles (or the ions formed in the atmosphere under their impact) are deflected and their trajectories wrap around the magnetic field lines, and therefore under this acceleration they radiate , partly in the visible. The atoms/molecules ionized or excited by this radiation (or their consequences) emit different lights when returning to their fundamental state. These cosmic rays are also responsible for the phenomenon of *spallation*. Thanks to their high energy, they induce nuclear reactions in the atmosphere on the nuclei of light atoms found in the upper atmosphere. These reactions, again, incidentally, give rise to electric charges (electrons, positrons, ions, α particles, etc.). All these phenomena and the associated light emissions give rise to the *aurora borealis* . The more the flux of cosmic rays increases, for example due to solar overactivity, the more they can be observed at lower latitudes. Likewise, the more the Earth's magnetic field weakens, the more we will see the Northern Lights at lower and lower latitudes. All these phenomena born from the interaction *[cosmic rays, magnetic field, atmosphere]* therefore lead to the appearance of immense ionized air masses where the density of electric charges (positive and negative) increases considerably. These electric charges will therefore strongly attract the polarized (and polarizable) molecules of water and thus become accretion centers for these water molecules. Thus, *all things being equal* (density of water vapor molecules, total pressure, temperature, etc.), a drop in the magnetic field which allows more cosmic rays to penetrate the atmosphere, will, via these electric charges, induce the condensation of water molecules into fine droplets or ice crystals, causing the formation of clouds which would otherwise not be formed and/or accelerating their formation . Professor Nir Shaviv {Israeli-American physics professor, University of Jerusalem} has, in the triptych *[cosmic rays, magnetic field, atmosphere]* studied over the ages the influence of the flow of cosmic rays (solar and galactic) and demonstrated a significant correlation between this flow and the planet's "average temperature". {this flow has evolved over the course of its history and for example for the "galactic" part of this flow depending on whether the Solar system and therefore the Earth was in an arm of our galaxy (Milky Way) or outside.} *But a drop in the Earth's magnetic field would have the same effect.* This has several consequences, there is therefore less water vapor, especially at night, since it has condensed more. But, on the other hand, the clouds formed increase the local albedo of the planet and reflect more solar radiation during the day. However, it is especially at the beginning of the night phase, when the drop in temperature further increases the condensation of water vapor that the formation of these clouds will be amplified and where the water drops and ice crystals created will *not absorb* but *reflect* the infrared (and over the entire “range”!) emitted by the earth’s surface. Everyone, and everyone, at least in the countryside, has noticed how the clear nights without clouds are cold and how the nights with cloud cover are warm (reflection by the clouds of infrared emitted by the ground and return of these towards the earth's soil). However, we must not forget that the Earth (in fact the Sun, Earth, fund of the Universe system) is a *thermodynamic creator* *** which describes a thermodynamic cycle (the synodic cycle) between the Hot Source that is the Sun and the cold source that is the background of the Universe at three Kelvins. And it is precisely at night when the temperature decreases that, on average, these clouds will form more easily, while it is precisely the phase of the synodic period where this half of the earth's surface "sheds its heat" by radiation towards the bottom of the Universe at 3 Kelvin. The evacuation of heat towards the cold source is hindered. . The clouds thus formed will give rise to a regime of “precipitation” that is disrupted compared to the previous situation ! Seen "from above", on the North side for example, the Earth has two particular points: 1) the geographic North Pole is the point through which the Earth's axis of rotation passes. 2) the North magnetic pole (which from the magnetic point is a south pole) which is not confused with the first, moves around and moves away from it (the two magnetic poles could even be reversed, and the pole magnetic North become a true north pole from a magnetic point of view). Seen from above, if we trace the meridian passing through the geographic pole and the mobile magnetic pole, climatic disturbances will be reduced for the regions located on this meridian, increased for the regions located in the opposite direction. As a result, cloud cover is modified, temperatures and climates, with local effects, as well. *** A thermodynamic creator is a system describing a cycle between a Hot Temperature Source and a Cold Temperature Source. As is already the case in a *thermodynamic engine* ; the heat flow tends to flow from the Hot Source to the Cold Source but the engine only lets this flow while, simultaneously, taking part of this energy flow in the form of work. The same goes for the thermodynamic creator (without capital C) who diverts part of this flow, not to produce work but complexity {self-organized emergent structures included in looped systems stabilizing them, allowing them to self-organize. maintain and grow and even duplicate (or even reproduce). A special case, but significant for us, being living beings as we know them. Particularly misguided in relation to the Bar-Tabac moralism of ecological "thought", is Roderick Dewar's Law which requires these structures to *dissipate as much energy as possible* , *as quickly as possible* in order to increase the transfer of Sun energy ==> rest of the Universe and accelerate the growth of entropy. This is why the energy balance of planet Earth (impossible in any case to be carried out seriously) of warmist delusions can, for this second reason, *only be false* and even ridiculous at the same time, stupidity and conceit since They omit this flow of energy, otherwise impossible to evaluate, which will transform into negentropy at the average temperature of the planet (in organization, complexity, etc.). . As a reminder, according to Jouzel, president of the IPCC (GIEC in French), islands have been submerged, countries have already disappeared, we have already been incinerated for a while... Science is built on falsifiable arguments (in the sense of Karl Popper) and, ultimately, *confrontable* with Reality either through laboratory experiments or through observations in the World which "authorize" or invalidate the hypotheses and models proposed by the accuracy of their forecasts and especially since these are precise and seemed improbable (and according to their coherent explanatory power on a set of observed and yet a priori independent events).

Earthworms have been gone in Rome ga…Floyd county…for 3 years and now others are commenting it’s the same where they are.
No fly larvae in trash cans for 3 yrs. Very few birds, very few bugs, plants are blooming way out of cycle and vegetable plants stopped growing after 2 nights warmer than days .

Charles Darwin said, " … there are few animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world than the earthworm".
A model is a model but the outcomes of anthropogenic climate change are negative to the effect we are facing the sixth mass extinction and societal collapse as we know it
The truth. It hurts, especially when you realize how few people see past the b.s.
A great pity they co-opted the term 'overshoot' to describe this policy/ideology. There has been debate since the early 80s on 'overshoot, the ecological basis of revolutionary change' (Catton 1980) and that humankind has overshot its ecological boundaries - and continues to do so at an accelerated pace - is exactly our predicament
oh yeah, geo-engineering will not address (maybe just exacerbate) the agricultural collapse we are experiencing.
Only a politician would think these "solutions" are reasonable. Privatize the profits and socialize the costs at its most absurd.
"Greed, selfishness and apathy" are the problems mankind faces.
"Immortal Idiots" is the one who rules them all
"It's what these inadequate models don't include that's important." -- Exactly so, the blind belief that the models are relevant to problem at hand gives rise to idiotic solutions based on greed and selfishness. The current engineering methods of mankind is not sufficient to solve this problem. Mankind needs to drastically reduce consumption and change its economic systems. I expect this will happen out of necessity. Growth capitalism is not the only possible economic system, is it?
I agree with you.
Greed has always been THE problem. Selflessness =self-destructive. Apathy goes out the window in Bad times.

Don't forget the litter picking!!
Finally, someone with the ⚾️⚾️ to point the finger at the fossil fuel Shareholders.
that's you
If all you do is point the finger at individuals and not at the system that incentives there behaviours well you can fire them all up into the sun today, capitalism will merely re-create them by the time you are grey or recently dead.

You need to rethink your farming practice and return to native species . Neither potatoes or maize are suitable plants for your soil .

What would an economist know about agriculture.?
Big oil corporations exist because they have corporate charters issued by the government. One solution, that might regrettably prove necessary, is the draconian solution: simply pull the corporate charters. “Sorry, you can no longer legally conduct business within our jurisdiction.” If, they walk and abandon their infrastructure, the government simply steps in, takes ownership and repurposes it to produce durable Carbon-based construction materials such as the cable for a space elevator, affordable housing, etc. Subsidies could then be transferred to renewable energy providers and Carbon technology startups.

Maladaptation will still count towards GDP. It's a win-win!

Has anyone suggested mandatory accounting in the schools for green capitalism?
Consumers need to refuse to buy junk designed to become obsolete.
Where is the data on the annual depreciation of automobiles and other durable consumer goods since Sputnik?
"Has anyone suggested mandatory accounting in the schools for green capitalism?" Unfortunately, "green capitalism" is an oxymoron: It's core values (profit imperative, drive for growth, valuing of money not nature) ALL drive us toward ecological collapse. Tp prevent collapse, we must replace capitalism with an economic models that fits the laws of nature.
@@HealingLifeKwikly
Capitalism is private ownership of the means of production. There is nothing about that which dictatez the social psychology of the culture. There is nothing that precludes mandatory accounting in the schools.
Neither the Left nor the Right suggest it however.
@@psikeyhackr6914 "Capitalism is private ownership of the means of production." Except you left out many aspects of capitalist ideology. "Capitalism is private ownership of the means of production FOR PROFIT, and capitalism champions competitive and materialistic self-interest and consumerism and mocks caring, sharing and cooperation. Because capitalism values profits over the well-being of people and the planet, it creates profits by underpaying workers, overcharging customers, and destroying species and ecosystems--while aggressively avoiding any attempts to hold it accountable for the damage it has done.
Neoliberal capitalist ideology IS the dominant culture of modern civilization and it destroyed more caring, fair, and sustainable worldviews on its ascent.
Incidentally, the reason that we have all these problems, such as climate change and other forms of pollution, and cultural exploitation, is BECAUSE corporations are not required to fulfill a clear ethical mandate that INCLUDES ecological (and cultural) protection in order to become established in the first place. Fail to follow these laws and, by your own actions, your species will go extinct (and be replaced by another species who will then have its chance). No gods need be invoked to punish or save. Our fate is in our own hands. Rather than strive to consume more and more energy to become a Type I Kardashev species (which, lacking ethics for its use, does not lead to the advancement of a civilization and simply produces a larger hammer to be used for self-extinction), we should therefore strive to become MY Type I moral civilization - one that has successfully created an ethical and ecologically sustainable, culturally diverse, planetary wide civilization. Let’s do it, let’s become a Type I ETHICAL civilization!

The overshoot of an idea..
Can you explain the key differences in a few words?
I thought the UAE has the highest per capita. Maybe they don't include immigrant labor, however.
I'm surprised it hasn't already started happening.
you're talking about yourself
Yes, a life of dissident strife trying to persuade my errant peers to do the right thing has given me high blood pressure.
Well, yes--in the end it’s ALWAYS about money…..
I wonder what people in 10 years will think about the level of alarmism in this video.
The level of certainty about the climate would be amusing if it wasnt so shared by so many people. Madness in action..
Germany have gone right wing, France left wing so that will be reflected in climate politics, policy and action. Germany are finished.

"hundreds of millions of human beings on this planet who are buying the petrol to fill-up their cars because they are too lazy to use public transport"
Idk, using public transport seems like less work than making $1000s to buy a car and then having to get a license to get a car. The problem is those fossil fuel ghouls don't want to fund public transport. I agree that people are ultimately responsible but the ones benefiting the most are the most responsible, that's just reality.

People like this would say the Badr Mienhoff gang were leaders of a free society
That is an important aspect.
Unless you want global poverty and starvation you cannot stop using fossil fuels until and viable option has been found.
I will suggest looking into "Earth Overshoot Day"
Imagine running out of your renewable yearly budget on August 2nd (2023), and having to borrow to future generations to get to the end of the year.
Every year, we pass the overshoot day earlier and earlier. Just consider forest and fishery in those renewable resources. Commercial fishing won't be viable by 2048, and that just considering over-fishing.
When English is a second language it’s easy to mistake industrialisation for capitalism
@@simonhorlickplanned economies have worked out so well.…
@@simonhorlickyou only have to look at the origins of capitalism and climate emergency to understand their leftist origins .Both are the result of ideological models and don’t reflect reality .
I mean sure, but capitalism literally has baked in it consumerism and economic practices that are absolutely damning to the environment. You can blame industrialization if you want (it ain't wrong) but an economic system centered around consumerism just multiplies the negative effects industrialization already has.

*CO2 re-heating , what nonsense !*
In no case can CO2, and for several independent reasons, be the cause of any climatic variations.

The magnetic field has little effect on global temps.

here are some beautiful statements!.
*relationship : Flow concentration:*
It is easy to demonstrate that the order of magnitude of the anthropogenic flow of CO2 is very much less than 1% of the natural flows of the carbon cycle.
And therefore, if the variations in atmospheric concentration were only due to humans (to this anthropogenic flux
*Other causes than CO2!*
Other causes, much more credible than the very necessary for Life and quite innocent CO2, can explain the *local* climatic variations observed, *which are in fact nothing extraordinary* [1.2 ° C in a century and a half] !
Professor Nir Shaviv {Israeli-American physics professor, University of Jerusalem} has, in the triptych *[cosmic rays, magnetic field, atmosphere]* studied over the ages the influence of the flow of cosmic rays (solar and galactic) and demonstrated a significant correlation between this flow and the planet's "average temperature". {this flow has evolved over the course of its history and for example for the "galactic" part of this flow depending on whether the Solar system and therefore the Earth was in an arm of our galaxy (Milky Way) or outside.}
*But a drop in the Earth's magnetic field would have the same effect.* This has several consequences, there is therefore less water vapor, especially at night, since it has condensed more.

*Explanations:*
The interaction of very weakened terrestrial magnetic field + reinforced solar magnetic field + flux of cosmic rays which explodes (solar cycle at its peak) ==> spallation phenomenon and multiplied ionization phenomena ==> *the density of electric charges in the The atmosphere* increases significantly due to induced nuclear reactions as well as ionization phenomena :
This has two independent effects sharing the same cause.
1) facilitated and accelerated formation of clouds ==> torrential rains up to low latitudes. 2) Northern lights up to low latitudes. And to complete with general information on solar activity which does not only occur through the flow of radiated energy but also through the magnetic field as well as the flow of cosmic rays:
