Allied BC40 Review: Allied's American-Made XC MTB

- Allied is a new brand for us here at the shop. In fact, it’s a relatively new brand in general. The Little Rock, Arkansas-based company started with gravel bikes that immediately rose to stardom after they were raced to the top step of the podium at Unbound Gravel in 2019. Since then, Allied has added new models and disciplines to its lineup. This brings us to our video today. We’re talking about the BC40, Allied’s first mountain bike. It’s an American-made, full-suspension, quick and nimble rig that blurs the lines between the XC race and trail categories. So is it the right bike for you? Stick around to find out.

Your reviews have become the standard for full sus bikes, IMO. Well done!
Hey thanks for the kind words! I appreciate it.
I agree! It's the first channel I visit when I'm researching bikes.
Really feel this is the best review channel at the mo. Simple, concise and super clear…🙏
Thank you thank you!
Another great and fun video. Makes me want another bike for trails like that. :). Wife says “one bike in, one bike out”. So I’ll stick with my Trail Couch if a 2022 Bronson for now. :). Until I can convince her my life would be perfect with an XC bike in the gold. :). Happy 2023
Just love your reviews. The content and editing are always awesome!
Much appreciated!
awesome reviews on this channel
Hey thanks!
I love the large triangle space for a frame bag. It reminds me of my Kona Hei Hei.
Went to Fort Lewis with Payson, guy is stupid fast. Cool to see him switch from Trek to these guys. Outside of needing student loads to afford it, seems super fun.
The mustache gives him super powers.
Makes me want to get into XC racing again.
I thought about it. And then remembered I like having fun.
Great stuff, Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent review particularly with comparisons to the competitors. Really gave me everything I needed to know about this bike.
Hey thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it!
This bike’s simplicity makes me second guess buying a Revel Rail 😢Revel CBF is amazing but it’s complicated? Maybe I need to just get the Revel Rascal and see how it goes! 😂 at the moment, I don’t have any bike at all, cause my bike was stolen so I need something 😂
@@pcarts232 Revel's dual threaded bearing aren't the most user friendly. They make fantastic bikes. I would love to own one.
@@GF-cb8rr yeah bro , I really want to get one but the Orbea Rallon is so much cheaper and it’s a good brand
@@pcarts232 great choice too. Orbea is a fine brand with an amazing history.
Great review. I was happy to find it. Subscribed! Any comparison to the Spec. Epic Evo?
Hey thanks! We don’t carry specialized so I haven’t ridden the epic.
Awesome review! Quick question, what size dropper is on this size XL? Thanks!
Awesome review! Excited that you guys now have Allied. How does this stack up against the new Orbea Oiz?
Haven’t ridden that one yet. Can’t really say.
Would love to take it for a spin
Hi Connor, Your reviews are simply awesome! I am looking into a new bike this year. Currently I ride an Ibis Ripley, but have recently started racing long stage races (30-50 mile days). I also enjoy riding long rides on the weekends (30 mile rides, steep and technical terrain).
I am undecided if I should get an Allied BC40 or Cervelo ZFS-5 120. I would appreciate if you could helmp me decide (have seen both reviews on bith bikes from BE).
Thanks!
Hey thanks. That’s a tough one for me. I felt extremely comfortable and confident on both of those bikes considering the category. I think over the course of a long day the Cervelo might be a bit more comfortable but maybe at the slight expense of efficiency.
GREAT REVIEW MAN. Now....what about the Ranger? How does that compair?
Thanks! Similar enough. This feels quicker on the ups and it can be built up quite a bit lighter. The Ranger offers a bit more traction and control, though. Somehow the BC40 felt a bit less sketchy on the downs too.
Will be great you review the 2023 Orbea Oiz 120 and compare with the Allied, uphill but specially in tech descends.
For this kind of bike what combo tires you will choose? Like best compromise decent cornering-grip with traction on the uphills and good rollong resistance Rekon Race? Rekon/ Rekon race? Aspens?
Thanks again
Cheers
I have an Oiz that I'll be starting to ride and review here shortly.
Hey Connor: what stem did you use on your test bike? At 179cm I’ve bought M and find that 70mm is optimal. But I’m wondering if I should have gone for L!
Pretty sure this was a 50mm stem
Question please: if you’re buying this bike for longer races/events which wheelset would you buy for it?
Recently in the lightweight wheels category I’ve been a big fan of the Berd wheels and the new Zipp 1zeros.
What is your height and weight? I'm 6'3 230 and thinking about getting into a more short travel trail bike like this. I'm wondering if my size would be an issue for these lighter shorter travel bikes though. I live in north texas so a bike like this would be perfect for my local trails.
I’m 6’2” and 190. Short travel bikes aren’t any less suitable for bigger folks than a long travel bike. That’s the beauty of suspension. You can tune it to fit your weight.
Hey buddy, are you guys gonna do a ripmo v2s review anytime soon ?
We've done the V2. The V2s wont have a significantly different ride quality.
hey conner isn't it winter in utah? where's your new fat bike? its been a year since your review of zacks big iron..
I don't have a fat bike unfortunately. I just end up being sad and bored all winter.
Wow, that squirrels nest of cables hanging off the handlebars 😳
Yeah. Can’t say I’m a fan of that. Non wireless drivetrain XC bikes tend to have a lot of cables with the lockouts.
Compared to the Rebel Ranger? Good climber , great descender
Heck the comments before. I made that comparison earlier.
How does this compare to the Revel Ranger?
Waaaay faster and lighter. Similar on the descents I’d say.
Beautiful machine indeed but seems like just another XC build for $7-12K. Is the bike fast or perhaps the rider?
I’m definitely not the fast part of this equation. Ha.
How does this bike hold up for XC racing against other 100mm full gas XC bikes? I'm considering getting and custom building one but I want something that's as efficient as it gets.
I only rode it in the 120mm mode. It’s certainly not as efficient as it gets. It’s more of an endurance bike in my mind. I’m not an XC racer though so take that with a grain of salt.
@@bikersedge I'm thinking of building it 120 mm with a lockout at a very low weight around 22lbs, and coming from a specialized epic I just want something thats very capable for pushing up hills, would a lockout on this in your mind make this an efficent bike for long sustained climbs?
@@kittykat7618 a lockout would help. I’m generally not a fan unless I’m on a road. I usually prefer the traction of open suspension. I think the geo being slacker on this is the biggest detractor from climbing performance. Still climbs well but I probably wouldn’t want to race XC on it.
@@bikersedge Ok thanks alot. I own a epic evo, would you say its more or less efficient then the Epic Evo? Sorry for the bombardment of question just trying to get my moneys worth with this bike
@@kittykat7618 haven’t ridden an Epic. We don’t carry specialized. If you’re looking for utmost efficiency a hardtail might be the move.
Yeti SB120 next please!
Working on getting a media bike. Stay tuned.
@@bikersedge LOVE my SB120. Excited for your thoughts on it.
@@jordanboogaard7290 Tell me more please! Just moved from SLC to Phoenix and want a new bike. Can’t decide between the sb140 and the sb120. Have a deposit down on the 120 while they waiting for parts to build it but now I’m thinking 140 after Connor’s review. Hopefully he can get the sb120 review out soon. They are the best!
@@mtbg4035 I had the same struggle. Ultimately I went with the 120 because I'm a ride leader with the local high school team and I felt like the 120 is a little lighter, snappier, and racey. (Not by much though, that's why it was so hard to decide.) plus the 120 gives you so much support on the top end it feels like you're peddling a hard tail with how much power you can push into every pedal - it's rad. I like to feel the trail under me a little bit and shorter travel bikes help accomplish that. My other bike is a Hardtail (Titanium Stanton Switch9er) The 140 is more of an all mountain bike, not trail bike. Hope this helps. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Most of my local trails are blues and greens, so I don't need a huge bike, plus with the 120's geometry you can rally blacks and even double blacks all day.
Honestly, unless you are stuck on the Yeti brand, do yourself a favor and demo the Pivot Trail 429 before you buy that SB120.. It is 3 pounds lighter, climbs the same if not better than the Ripley (which is the standard to compare to), and is more stable/capable downhill than that SB120. It's ridiculous that Yeti is 3 years late to the short-travel space and STILL brought it in over 30 pounds when the competitors weigh 3-5 pounds less.
I hope this doesn't get the Wal-Mart "label" like the Viathon did, just because it's owned by Wal-Mart heirs. The Viathon was a very good bike with a great price point but the bike snobs would never give it the credit it was due.
Fair point. I bet Allied is pretty aware of that. They have done a great job with their branding.
Very similar to an Epic Evo
Pretty similar. This one is quite a bit longer which is going to give it a bit of stability.
@@bikersedge I bought a epic evo. I don’t really see what the fuss is about? I got the pro,$8800 bucks… not a good buy!
Nicely done! I’ve been looking at this bike for a while. I’d have to sell both my hardtail and full suspension to get one but I think this would satisfy my needs nicely. Great review!
The Exie is shorter not longer than the BC40, shorter reach, shorter wheelbase, shorter front center... the only thing longer on the Exie is the seated position due to slacker seat tube angle, but this is irrelevant for downhill... so not sure why you said the Exie "significant longer" ?!?
The wheelbase on the BC40 is 1241 (xl) and on the Exie it’s 1253. BC40 reach is 501 and the Exie is 519. So yes the Exie is significantly longer than the BC40.
They should've named it
SEXY XC
It really is a gorgeous bike but the price tag is kinda crazy
Yeah. “Made in America” costs a bit more. It’s still on par with other high end brands even some that aren’t made in the US.
Nice bike but Allied bikes are ridiculously expensive.
They’re not cheap but they’re on par with a lot of other high end bikes. They’re also made in America.
@@bikersedge I'll stick with my 2012 HEI HEI deluxe. It's upgraded and paid for. 👍
Well the Ibis Exie & the new Yeti SB120 are ridiculously priced too. At least this one made in America and performs better overall than those bikes.
@@REB4444 Ibis Exie is US made as well. They do have a cheaper version/build thats made in Asia though.
I’m tired of 66.5 degree head tubes on an XC bike.
No reason why that HT needs to be slacker than 67.5 (maybe 67).
The entire longer, lower, slacker is blown out.
Out here in Utah we have pretty straight, high-speed and rough trails. I’ll take the slacker HTA all day. Different strokes for different folks.
