Hi @skipartpictures , just want to let you know I found something that will work if that seal breaks and the air is leaking from that seal at the rubber part of the shock. I bout some Bead Seal for tires. Put it on the rubber really good and let the shock down on it let sit for a couple of hours and it will seal it . Mines air right up and no problems. Great videos thanks for them
victor fields was it the front or rear? My rear is completely dropped but when i took the tire off and jacked it, i could see the air pumping the shocks back up
New subscriber here. Loved the video. I own a 2011 E550 with 92k miles. My air shocks are currently leaking so I know it's near or time to replace. I'm definitely going to do it on my own
Thanks for this video - I'm sort of "inheriting" the maintenance on my mother-in-law's 2001 W220 because she has gotten tired of being charged what she thinks is extraordinarily high prices for repairs - so much so, that she's avoiding many problems, and ignoring some (like the leaking suspension) because the mechanic price to fix it is about $6K. She was thrilled to find the cost of a simple brake job (pad swap) was so low, as I ordered the pads and sensors online (local auto parts stores didn't stock them anyway), and insisted on watching me do it. She was also impressed at how easy and quick it was to do such a job. To be fair, the mechanic and the dealers are quoting her pricing to replace the entire air suspension, and from their business standpoint, they really can't afford to piecemeal such a repair on an older car, because if one component is bad, other components are likely to follow soon, and they don't want egg on their face by replacing one strut only to find "this is the same problem!" show up because of another strut leaking, or the compressor failing, etc. I don't yet know exactly where the leak(s) are on her car, but I haven't been able to get her to stop driving it long enough to check it out. There's not too many places it can be, since that system is really pretty simple, but hopefully, I'll get there before something worse happens. Unfortunately, her car has a much greater rust problem, so eventually, it won't be worth fixing, but I'll do my best to keep it safe enough to drive for her, as long as I can, because she has a deep emotional attachment to that car. (She does have another car, and most of the time, she can also drive the father-in-law's car too, but doesn't like to).
Thanks for posting this, I will probably be doing all 4 soon. Do you need to preload and put weight on the assembly before torquing down? If so, do you have any tips for that?
Hello Edward L! You're welcome! That's awesome to hear! If you're just installing the strut there is no need to preload the suspension when tightening the bolts back. I hope this helps. Cheers!
Great video I waiting on my struts and compressor now and I have to do it on my Hyundai Equus should be much different, a little concerned about the compressor though. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks again
Easier thing to do in my opinion for adding the new fitting for the strut airline hose would be to twist it in by hand with the white part still in it then tightening it with a wrench, putting the air line in, then shoving it in (but gently) with a pair of pliers.
You're doing a good job keep up the good work flip flops at all I love it we all can't be the same that implies that you know what the hell you're doing and if you want to wear flip-flops you can that's your prerogative that's what makes this world so great we can all do our own thing and have our own style what the hell we want to be without ridicule keep up the good work keep on smiling that's right

Thank you for the kind words Ortwein International. When you walk boldly towards your project, fear generally stays behind. I'm glad this video has helped you understand the process better now :)
Hey your videos are really informative and I really appreciate that you give away your knowledge for free to people who would like to d.i.y .. I'm looking to buy an s500 with 95,000 and the car has a weird knocking sound on the front driver side how can I diagnose this problem before I buy ?
Hello Bp P! Thank you for the kind words. I'm so glad that I can help people such as yourself :) In regards to your car. That's awesome that you found a great car with low miles. There is not too much information I can give since I am not there with you to buy the car and I would highly recommend getting the opinion from a qualified Mercedes-benz technician, however my advice would be to take it to your mechanic and inspect all of the suspension components like nuts and bolts then work outward to other things in the area where the sound is coming from. It could be something simple like a loose bolt, or something more moderate like a bad ball joint which is still an easy fix. If you know for a fact that you can fix the problem yourself, but you're just unsure at the present moment where the sound is coming from, then I would suggest renegotiating to a lower price and buying the car anyway. Then when you have the car you can start the troubleshooting process. Best of luck to you! Cheers!
SkipArtPictures Thanks so much my brother I appreciate all your advice and I think I'm going to buy the car and deal with the problem myself as long as I can get the guy to give me a more reasonable price ..

After researching its just better to install the airmatic delete kit. The system wears out like spark plugs and brakes. That's to much money to be spending over and over just to maintain a vehicle ride comfort but good video 💯👌🏾
Hey hi , I have a 2006 cls with a blown out front airmatic....after looking at your video am planning to do a diy on my suspension but am curious whether after changing the suspension do I need a scanner tool to re calliberate the airmatic system??
Hmmm, not looking forward to putting up the buck-a-roos for a set of these. My fronts are working, but the dust covers are totally shot. I have a bad driveline vibration under load I have to address first. Swell video
Hello Adam N, I totally understand, but the Arnott's are a lot more reliable than the original air struts. I think they are worth the investment. Another alternative is to do a shock and spring conversion. From what I hear the ride comfort is good and you'll never have to worry about the air going out again.
@@GarageDynamics It would be a lot easier to swallow if they had the same warranty in the pacific as they do in North America. I think we only get a flat 2 years down here. But you're right, definitely the best option out there.
Hello Kristian Figueroa, ABC uses a hydraulic pump system to control the suspension, so the car does not come with a air pump which is what's needed for airmatic suspension. The best thing to do would be to convert your car back to the ABC system that it originally came with. I would contact your local Mercedes Benz mechanic for the best options. I hope this helps. Cheers!
Note to change a front strut both wheels have to be jacked up to get the old one out. To get the upper control arm free [down] tool 3/ 4" ball joint separator item 99849 at harbor freight works.
Good point. I started with jacking up one side and once I had the ball joint separated, I could not push the upper control arm down far enough to insert the bottom of the air spring because the anti-roll bar was in a bind. Once I jacked up the entire front end, I was able to push down the upper control arm without the resistance. Another note, once installed, do not let the entire front end down or you will not be able to remove the jack. You must stop when the tires hit the ground and start the car to let the air springs fill with air.
Hi - have a 2012 CLS 550 and REAR armatics failed. Can you recommend the Arnot part numbers and air pump? Might want to give this a try after watching your video! Also if you have a video of you replacing the rear airmatics? That would be great for you to walk me through it?
Thanks so much for the video! This is great. I'm looking to replace the struts on my 2007 GL-450. I imagine it would be very similar to this install, anything you can think of that I should look out for? Or any resources you would recommend beyond this for my project? Thanks again and look forward to more videos.
Hello Omar Espinosa! My apologies for the late reply. I would pay special attention to the air strut connecting lines. A really good resource is www.mbworld.org. Everyone there has a lot of knowledge to share. I hope this helps! Cheers!
How did you know which to replace the air compressor or strut ? If I don't drive mine for about 3 days the front right sinks and eventually goes back up after about an hour, so to me points to pump or is the strut leaking... HELP..
Hello N S, I knew it was the strut because I heard air leaking from it and also the pump will fill it up once I started the car. My pump did go out later on and I believe the car told me I needed a new pump.
Hello SlxwFox83, I just used a standard ball joint separator. Here is the link for it. I hope this helps. Cheers! Ball joint separator: amzn.to/2CbV8Vu

I’m stuck on 14:18 min trying to place back the large bolt control arm. Super hard to get it back in place and also just spins so I can’t tighten it. Any ideas? & good you invested in AR on the glasses. I just see 16:59 you suggest applying pressure to the rotor with a jack. I’ll have to try that tomorrow.
2014 Mercedes Gl450 I removed my front, left right old air suspension struts .Having issues replacing the New ones ,I need to deflate them there full of air and to tall to fit in its place. Please Help
Hello Mike, Please do not deflate your new air suspension. If they do not fit, I would recommend calling the manufacture and see if you have a defective strut. I hope this helps. Cheers!
Great video. I'll be buying an S430/500 and will be using your videos for some of the DIY stuff I will be doing. Did you replace both fronts? What"s a good brand for Torx tools?
Hello Andi Maloku, I believe new air fittings come with the Arnott struts. I would check the hose again to make sure the collar is on the hose and it's seated in the fitting properly. If everything looks good and it's still leaking then I would call Arnott and ask them to send you new fittings. I hope this helps.
Hi I have a Mercedes R280 CDI and recently my mechanic told me that the noise heard from the front right wheel is from the airmatic shock absorber. It is not the stabilizer linkage. With 200,000kms he recommends me to change only the complete shock absorber when the air spring break. My question is: change 1 or the 2 front shock? what is this noise due to the pothole road pass, is there something loose inside the shock absorber? Thank you
Hello Ruben Fdez, From my experience, when an airmatic goes bad it makes a loud air hiss when it goes over bumps and potholes. If you hear a clunking sound when you drive then it's possible it could be the airmatic, or it could be other suspension components that have become loose, or the bushings in the suspension components have worn out. Usually they will make a clunking sound. Another sign that your airmatic is going out, is that you'll notice that your car will have normal ride height, but after it sits for a while the ride height will lower. You will also get a warning on your dash saying "Airmatic Visit Workshop". If you decide to replace your airmatic suspension, then I suggest checking both shocks to look for signs of wear. Maybe just one side got damaged and the other is ok. If both sides show heavy signs of wear, then if you replace one, the other will go out soon after. It's hard to give exact advice, so I advise you to follow the advice given to you by your local certified Mercedes-Benz Mechanic. I hope this helps! Cheers!
Thanks again for yet another great W220 tutorial! I was already able to repair my front armrest mechanism after stumbling upon your detailed video on that very subject. I previously thought I was supposed to replace the whole lid itself, but thanks to you I learned that was not the case at all. Just one question regarding this video - what was the approx. mileage when your front right strut's air bladder failed? Mine's an '05 and has already passed the 130K mile mark, so I'm thinking of replacing both front ones as a precaution, so i don't find her laying on her belly a couple of weeks/months from now.
Hi Deyan Dyankov! Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad that you were able to make the fix to your armrest without having to replace the whole thing. I'm planning to make a follow up video for the it, so stay tuned! I have an 04 S Class and the suspension went out around 190k. The air pump went out first around 175k. Check the boots on your struts to see if they are cracked. If so, then dirt will work its way inside and start to eat at the strut bladder. Yeah, it's never a good feeling when you see your car sitting low because an air strut blew. haha! Best of luck to you! Cheers!
Thank you for your reply. It's good to see that someone still cares about these older Mercs, enough to continue producing content on them, so for me it's totally worth following the channel and its development. At the end of the day, as you've so adequately put it, the W220 still looks the part, 100K dollars or more... well, at least when it's well cared for.
Thank you Deyan for your appreciation in my channel! It's people like you that definitely keep me inspired to produce more content. You're right, the W220 is such a beautiful car when properly cared for. It's one of my all time favorite cars.
Great video! Question tho, after installing, do you put the wheel on and drop the car without pressure and then hit the button to raise? Any risk of damage because no pressure in the strut? What’s the proper order after install is complete. I have an 06 s500 w/o 4matic. What’s the right strut to get for the front? I appreciate the help. I’m a total noob.
Hello Pzge Yo, That's a great question. What I do is after I have installed the suspension and double checked all bolts and wire connections, and Install the wheel onto the car, I then, lower the car until the wheel is touching the ground and then lock the jack. Start the car and press the button to raise the car. Once the suspension is filled with air and the car is high enough, I remove the jack and press the button for firm (sport) suspension setting. After 30 seconds or so I turn off "Sport suspension" and will take the car for a test drive. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Hello James Carroll, That, I'm not too sure of. I know you can get lowering links, but I wouldn't risk it with the airmatic suspension. I would go for a full coilover conversion. That's just me though haha I did a quick google search and found this company, but I'd suggest looking around some more before making a purchase. ceika-store.com/products/cct1m456?locale=en_us

Hello Amar Manku! I wouldn't do it because of how sensitive the air suspension is. I think if you want the car to sit lower with good suspension reliability then I would change to a shock and spring combination
@@amzmanku Yes, that would mean replacing out the air suspension. The ride quality will not be the same, but it will be more reliable, specially if the car will be lowered.

Hi I recently replace my rear air bags in my 2002 s500 and now my rear is stuck in the air and I’m getting a message saying vehicle to low stop car any way I can get it to level out ?
Hello Dwayne Cummings, sorry to hear about your issue. I'm not sure what air suspension you went with, but one way to level out the cars suspension is to reset the battery. Also, make sure all air strut electrical connections are securely in place. Another thing to consider is to check your air suspension relay located in your fuse box under your hood. Sometimes replacing it will help your suspension. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Arnott is awsome got my 430l back on the road
Hi @skipartpictures , just want to let you know I found something that will work if that seal breaks and the air is leaking from that seal at the rubber part of the shock. I bout some Bead Seal for tires. Put it on the rubber really good and let the shock down on it let sit for a couple of hours and it will seal it . Mines air right up and no problems. Great videos thanks for them
victor fields was it the front or rear? My rear is completely dropped but when i took the tire off and jacked it, i could see the air pumping the shocks back up
@@garagenextdoor807 did you jack both sides of the rear?
Great and very informative video. And I can't believe how clean and non-rusty your W220 is :D
Thank you Lord of Petrol for the kind words! She takes care of me and I take care of her haha :D
New subscriber here. Loved the video. I own a 2011 E550 with 92k miles. My air shocks are currently leaking so I know it's near or time to replace. I'm definitely going to do it on my own
Thanks for the Sub Leonel Duarte! :) Have fun with your new suspension install! Cheers!
Looking mad Dominican with working on your car with Chancletas.
Cheers!

Easier thing to do in my opinion for adding the new fitting for the strut airline hose would be to twist it in by hand with the white part still in it then tightening it with a wrench, putting the air line in, then shoving it in (but gently) with a pair of pliers.
Great idea Jaycob Hicks! Thanks!

I believe Arnott recommends replacing at least both struts on an end (if not all four) at the same time.
These are so easy to do. By the 3rd time I had to do one it almost took longer to take the wheel off.
lol! Nice!
After researching its just better to install the airmatic delete kit.
The system wears out like spark plugs and brakes. That's to much money to be spending over and over just to maintain a vehicle ride comfort but good video 💯👌🏾

Great vid! Question, do you need to press the ball joint back in place or will tightening the bolt be sufficient. Thanks!
Never mind, I believe the 20 Nm torque on the bolt is sufficient. Thank you!
Hello Derek Crudup, you only need to tighten the bolt. That will seat the ball joint back into place. I hope this helps. Cheers!

any recommendation for ABC suspension replacement for a CL 55 AMG something long-lasting ?????
Hello Buyi Philip, I would recommend Arnott. I think they are the most reliable. They make a set for your car with ABC.
@@AdamAus85 Ahhh, I didn't know that. I agree, definitely the best option out there.
😂😂 flip flops that's funny! Be careful my friend, but you have the right idea with the kneepads thow
So my 2006 S55 the previous owner did coilovers conversion from abc..can I swap in air struts instead of abc?
Hello Kristian Figueroa, ABC uses a hydraulic pump system to control the suspension, so the car does not come with a air pump which is what's needed for airmatic suspension. The best thing to do would be to convert your car back to the ABC system that it originally came with. I would contact your local Mercedes Benz mechanic for the best options. I hope this helps. Cheers!
How is the driving comfort? Any faults in the instrument cluster?
Hello Erdbeermarmeladebrot mit Honig, Driving comfort is amazing! No faults, everything is working properly. :)
Awesome vid! Got my arnott 2605 strut coming tomorrow, can’t wait to install it!
Hi - have a 2012 CLS 550 and REAR armatics failed. Can you recommend the Arnot part numbers and air pump?

How did you know which to replace the air compressor or strut ? If I don't drive mine for about 3 days the front right sinks and eventually goes back up after about an hour, so to me points to pump or is the strut leaking... HELP..
Hello N S, I knew it was the strut because I heard air leaking from it and also the pump will fill it up once I started the car. My pump did go out later on and I believe the car told me I needed a new pump.

I replaced my air strut today, I have a leak at the air fitting and my kit didn’t come with new fittings is that my problem?
Hello Andi Maloku, I believe new air fittings come with the Arnott struts. I would check the hose again to make sure the collar is on the hose and it's seated in the fitting properly. If everything looks good and it's still leaking then I would call Arnott and ask them to send you new fittings. I hope this helps.
Great work great video footage great explanations
Cheers!
Thank you, very much.

Cheers!
Great job man!!! Thanks for posting this!!
Do you know if anybody ever came out with a shortened shock so that they don’t bottom out if we were to lower it an inch or two
Hello James Carroll, That, I'm not too sure of. I know you can get lowering links, but I wouldn't risk it with the airmatic suspension. I would go for a full coilover conversion. That's just me though haha
I did a quick google search and found this company, but I'd suggest looking around some more before making a purchase.
