About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.
Quick note to those thinking of building one of these. Before you set the screws for the hinges in the back, compress it with clamps and then set the screws so that when you are clamping the front, the same pressure is also at the back.
Compress the back with clamps?
very very good tip. Thanks mate. it means compress them from all area then set the screws
Thank you, good advice.
Exactly what I was thinking when watching. Good tip
Thats what I was thinking anyway. You need to set the clamps so it already creates pressure when you fold it. Otherwise it will only press in the front.
Thanks for the video, you inspired me to build a press. I had most of the materials on hand.
Total cost for the project came to $16.28. BTW it works great.
Finally, someone builds a Kydex press we can be proud of. And most of all. IT WORKS. Thanks man...
+r parrish youbetcha!
I prefer Double sided Carpet Tape over 3M-77. Makes for changing out foam, much cleaner. Nice simple DIY. Good detail, thanks!
Yes hinges is a must cuz I tried just clamping and had the same problem with the knife moving while clamping. Gotta be quick too trial and error will get you dialed in. Thanks for the vid
You’re welcome. Cheers 👍
I'll be building a press today and your video will be a great help...thanks.
Brilliant as usual. I really dig watching your videos. Thanks so much.
If you tape paper towel around the foam, it will help protect the foam from the heat and extend its life considerably. I know it might not be the greatest solution, but its certainly helped preserve my molding foam in sheath making.
I know this is a 7 -8 year old video, BUT... you might also consider using baker's Parchment Paper to help protect the foam from the heat.
Great video brother. I haven't seen this one before for some reason.
Thanks Toby! I appreciate that buddy!👍
Congratulations on having way more than 2k subscribers! Watching this 7 years after you posted it and you’re at 294k!
Thank you
Great video content. Definitely going to follow these steps and build my press this weekend. Thanks
ive read on a forum about kydex that if you head up the foam right after your done with the pressing proces the foam goos back to its original state. My self, i haven't got ang experience with kydex jet.. just orderd my first 2 sheaths and going to make my first press soon. Cant wait!
+spitcross thanks for that tip! I'm going to have to give that a try with my heat gun. Cheers!
Just a thought, but you might try a flat silicone cooking sheet between the foam and your work piece.
Anyone watching this in 2021 cry when he talked about all the wood he got for free?
Hahaha exactly right?!
2000 viewers? You're at 207K now. Good job! Thanks for the well-shot video with excellent audio, am off to build my first press now!
Thank you very much 👍
@@Simplelittlelife - Now it's 246K....you've come a long ways. Love this channel.
4 steel pins anchored in the lower block sliding free in the upper and 2 ratcheting tie down straps with two alignment guides per strap (one on each block) on each side in proper position. fast and easy and allows for ANY thickness so you can do knife sheaths to revolver holsters, and if needed you can forgo strapping with weighs or sliding clamps since the pins keep everything lined up
BTW Using Robertson screws is cheating!
👍👍Glad to see the proper use of a file i.e. push in one direction. Also, load up the file with soap stone & it will cut better & clog less. Good vid ! 👍👍
Thanks for the video, I've been looking into making a holster and this was the missing puzzle piece
Awesome video, thanks
great tutorial, thanks!
You are welcome
I enjoy the chirping in the background. I have around 40 full grown and 5 biddies.
Great video quick and no rambling on and on!
Using Velcro to adhere the foam to the press is a good option because you can swap it out when the foam wears out. Good video.
+Dan Tao that's a great idea! When I have to replace this stuff I'll certainly be doing that. Thanks for sharing!
THAT WAS AN AWESOME VIDEO. I WILL BE MAKING ONE FOR MYSELF ! AND START WORKING WITH KYDEX FOR MOST OF MY KNIVES ! THANKS !!!
Another great video! I saw someone use 1/8" high temp silicone sheets to cover and insulate the foam. Might be worth a try if your foam keeps getting depressed, either that or take it out for a beer..
+Maxwill Beryl hahaha! I'll take it out for a beer either way!
I've never heard that idea before but it sounds like it would work well. Thanks for sharing!
Maxwill B, what type of adhesive do you recommend to put on the High temp silicone sheet onto the foam?
Simple Little Life, thank you for sharing that video.
@@Simplelittlelife where do you source those large kydex sheets we see in the very beginning?
Love your videos bro, been making knives for about 1 year & refer to your channel often, great job!
That Maple would make great scales too! Thanks for your videos!!
+Jeffrich308 yeah it sure would. I plan on using some of it for scales soon. I've got slabs and slabs of the stuff. Almost feel bad using it for a press...
Glad you like the videos and Cheers!
Wow! 4 years and you went from under 2k subs to a WHOPPING 242,000+ subscribers!
Great job brother! That’s some very impressive growth in a short amount of time, and congratulations on the success!
Subbed and liked...great video too!
Awesome video
Damn, a year ago you were striving for 2k subs.... now you have 100k+. That's awesome!
Great info. I'm going to do this for a Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel sheath and add some molle straps and webbing for small survival items.
I need the connections you have lol. Being a knife maker, getting free/cheap maple and black walnut in bulk makes me drool haha
glad I found this video... I'm planning on playing with Kydex over the next few weeks... First job on the list is to make a press... :)
Nice work and good luck with the videos.
Nice build Jeremy, thanks for sharing it with us. Did the impressions from the lighter go away after a while?
Yeah they did. I've actually found this foam to do a great job at releasing the imprints left behind, even if it takes a few days. Cheers!
I like this kydex press ,, I will have to build one like this,, thanks
Great job .....Well done Its great you can get that wood its very expensive to have to buy
So did those imprints left in the thermal foam end up messing up the next project? Or does that pretty much go away when hot kydex puts another impression over it?
are you a bladesmith or a trained tv host? Very informative and professional!🤘🏼👌🏼✌🏼️👍🏼
like the drill POV! very creative
haha, thanks!
Great Video Making it simple
Great video, will be trying this!
+MisterDeluxia thanks!
Everyone's probably going to laugh now.... But a sandwich press does the job just as good 😂
Just have to set it so it doesn't get too hot.....
Just another way of doing it from a blade smith, all the way out of Cape Town, South Africa.
Nice vid brother, plain, simple and to the point. It doesn't get much simpler than this and a lot cheaper than buying a kydex press...
Hi. I will try to make a holster for my gun. But I do not have a model of my gun. Will kydex stick to the gun ???
I'm about 3/4ers through. Why do you put adhesive down for the pads? I don't see a reason but hey!! It's your video and I'm diggin' it so far.
I couldn't figure out why the glue spray. At first I thought of some kind of release agent but turned out to look like the same can.
To prevent the pads from moving.
Makes one less thing to worry about when putting the kydex in the press.
Nice. Im making one tomorrow.
Could you use a heat blower on the foam to take the impressions out? Also warming up the foam before pressing helps
Awesome video, and I must say, WOW, that press is easy, and honestly really helped me see how easy kydex is. Love the "drill cam" too btw, THAT was cool, oh and the Robertson screws...don't see them on YT too much. :-) Atb!
+NUMan14 Hey Thanks. Super easy stuff to make. A nice sheath only takes about an hour from start to finish. That's the beauty of kydex:)
Would a 2x6 work? Or like two 3x3 or something?
What is the name of the tool you used to ream out the new screw holes?
one way ive seen to not get the depressions in the foam is to heat up the foam and item you are molding the kydex around. you will also get better definition in the kydex
ah, interesting. I've never heard of that but will certainly have to give it a try now. Thanks a bunch for sharing! Cheers!
Good suggestion. I was wondering why some kydex makers were heating their firearms with a heat gun before placing the hot kydex.
That’s awesome where do you order your Kydex ?
Awesome video Jeremy!! I learned a lot from that one and will be building my press this week. Did you notice the indentions in the foam showing up on the kydex in later uses?
great video , question where can I buy those thick wood blocks . I didn't see them in home depo, and what are the dimensions ? thanks
Probably about 1.5 to 2inches thick 12inches x10 inches. It aint gotta be exact. Just check at a lumber yard or post a picture of the wood on facebook someone will bless u
I know it's already a bit "old" video but have you had any problems with those dents? Do they leave a mark on the next project that you're pressing?
+Keijo Johansson nope. I thought it would be it doesn't affect the next press at all. I'm still using the same foam that I had in this video and probably have about 50 sheaths on it and it still work great. Cheers👍
Good question. I asked myself the same thing
Thanks for sharing. I was wondering if the hinges keep you from getting even pressure from front to back? It looks like it would keep the aid with the hinges from smashing down. Any problems with that? Thanks again for sharing
The hinges are going to apply an amount of pressure in the back and that pressure is determined by how much pressure is in the front, so it's just how the press is designed that keeps even pressure
I understand your question I don't think he does
I’ve been watching this video a lot lately as I brainstormed for press ideas and just realized the giveaway was for 2k subscribers lol 5 years ago now he has 270k subscribers lol god damn this mans been doing work on the UA-cam wow 😮
As a newbie a ran into a heat issue with my foam..
I bought some grey stuff from home Depot about 1/2" thick.double layered it. Put my warm pieces on,clap. Then when I opened it my kydex was stuck to the foam pad🤬. So now I use cooking spray 😎
Hey I'm on a SIMPLE youtube binge right now and LOVED your youdube on Dysen recharger repair (!! ) Do you think that lining the heat resistant foam for kydex press with foil would help keep it from retaining deforming marks after pressing the hot kydex? Also I found the knife making tools vid helpful thank you!. What small aluminum part or block could be used to make the sander?
\
+Julia Mahaffey Hey Thanks Julia! I never thought of lining it with foil, but that's a good idea. I'm going to have to try it next time, thanks!
For the sanding block I used a piece of 2" X 3" aluminum (if I remember correctly) but was also thinking of maybe making it out of hardwood like maple or something. The bummer with wood is that I would worry about it swelling and deforming if when wet-sanding.
Cheers!
+Simple Little Life I see that Amazon does sell Aluminum Block for milling. I enjoy working with hardwood and some of your hard maple would be perfect . . . you are right that you might get swelling depending on how long you used it wet, whether you coated it with poly, etc. Another option would be stabilized wood. There are many good youtube instructions for stabilized wood. Corian? Maybe . . . I'm studying today on how to make a knife that is light enough for backpacking and substantial enough for bushcraft. Thanks for your help!
yeah you bet. Corian. that would probably be a great option.
That is a very interesting concept, light enough for backpacking, and substantial enough for bushcraft. That is the best part of learning to make knives! Learning the design and different concepts for all over the place. I'd never heard of that idea before. Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Ima use my moms wooden tortillera
Post a picture of what she does to you after that. Lol
Only one side of the kydex foam works, and that looks like the wrong side. The other side has a heat resistant coating.
Hi what are the dimentions of your kydex press thanks keep up the good work
How'd it go? was the foam snufficient?
Have you tried it with a handgun holster? It doesn't seem it would make a good enough definition unless you had thicker foam.
Real informative, thanks.
Wasn't sure about wrapping hot kydex around a lighter but great video bro
Another excellent video ! That camera is so good as well !!
What toaster oven model and make are you using
Just curious, but are such thick wood blocks necessary?
how many times can you use the foam before it gets wasted?
I’m at about a hundred or more and still using this same one I made in the video. Maybe a few hundred by now.
Awesome video, thanks for the info. -Aspiring knifemaker needing sheaths.
Nice work.
Yhea....I like when you get motivated like that!
Can we use sofa foams?
the impression on the foam from making things effect your next build does it leave impression in kydex the next go around thanks
ClumsyGamer no
No
nice idea thx
Great channel Thank You....
I just put 2 cinder blocks on top of mine. The pressure is instant and you don't need hinges or clamps. Never had a problem. You can also place the press on the floor and stand on it and drink a beer. 🙂
Need the knife thanx for idea there no gun stores here in Canada for pistols an I’m a lefty so hard to find holsters at airsoft store this will help
Good stuff
+Tdg0101 Thanks!
Hey bro....can you tell me where you get your kydex material and rivets...?
+Canadian Neo-Frontiersmen I get them from knifekits.com Pretty cheap to ship and they have some awesome stuff. I bought their little rivet press as part of a starter kydex kits and I'm really impressed with all of the stuff they sent.
+Canadian Neo-Frontiersmen I've also bought it from Tandy Leather in Calgary, but it's much cheaper to just order it online.
That’s simple enough for a caveman like me to do!!!! 😍
I watch lots of videos and never subscribe! But this i def had to great work!
ok what was the little yellow handled tool you used to debur the holes
+Joseph Rector I think it's actually called a debuting tool. I believe that even Home Depot and other places are starting to carry them now. I think there are some that are being sold under the General tool name.
An essential tool for all kinds of projects in the shop. I lost mine for a few day last month and realized just how much I use it all the time. I have some cheapos that work fine but if you can find the original Vargus brand that are made in Israel, those are noticeable better than all the other ones out there. I've had that yellow Vargus for over 15 years now and it's like an old friend to me.

Hey bud, what kind of/model drill press and bits do you use?
I really like the walter drill bits (or dormer but they're harder to find) and my old drill press was some old no-name that I got from an uncle, but I've recently swapped it out for a crafted CX600 milling machine. Not large, but a little more versatility and still large enough for what I need. Cheers!
question: will plastic melt when in contact with the warm kydex sheet?
This may depend on the type of plastic.
In my experience, I never had a problem with solid materials, but I would be careful.
@@brothersintools9231 noted
do you sell the knives you make?
what i don't like about this press model, is that the hinges won't allow for equal and uniform pressure over the piece you are working with, you will always have more pressure towards the front when the clamps go, which results in more defined impression where more pressure is applied.
Does anyone think that there is any utility in pre-loading (lightly clamping) the press a little when marking and installing the hinges?
Hola. Me han gustado mucho tus videos. La verdad son muy didacticos Pero no se nada de ingles. No habra alguna posibilidad de hacer una versión subtitulada al español. Gracias y saludos desde Mendoza, Argentina!
wood size sir?
How much more of that maple does that guy have or do you have?
Great video! Subscribed.
Thanks for that nice vid!
You're welcome!
What material is this black foam?
EVA foam, you can use the same foam from those foam floor tiles used in gyms or childs rooms
What is the density of the foam?
Where did you get the large sheet of kydex?
Tandy leather is where i get mine.
Cool vid man... Awesome tattoo on your fingers!
I thought you would have used longer screws for your hinges due to weight and pressure..
Not that I'm doubting your knowledge, from what I've seen your a beast
May I ask who Stephanie is ?
