EA has terribly neglected the game modes that don't make a profit for them in all of their games since probably 2012 or so. What I would like to see from a NHL series Franchise Mode is to have the ability to start as the GM at a Junior, College (because of NIL NCAA teams should be included in the game), or European team and make your way up to be the GM of an NHL team similar to if you started at a small school in NCAA Football or a League 2 (or similar) club in FIFA. International Management should be possible for the bigger international tournaments. For Be a Pro I think you should be able to start as a 15 year old in AAA, get drafted into the CHL, or choose to play in college or Europe, represent your country in international tournaments such as the World Juniors, World Championships and Olympics (give it a generic name), and get drafted to the NHL based on how you played for 4 seasons, or go undrafted and play elsewhere.
Tendencies is something ea needs to bring in too. If you’ve ever watched a cpu vs cpu game every player plays the same way it’s just a letter of how well they’re able to do those. Yes there’s pass/shoot bias and attributes and xfactors change it slightly but it gets very boring and would help with the randomizing of xfactors for new players
EA has neglected franchise fans for far too long. Jonny is spot on with nba2k, imagine nhl with these options?? All the legends, different era's to play franchise in. Im not a huge basketball guy, but i grew up in the jorden era, and i have a blast reliving/rewriting history.
The majority of the stuff Johnny is talking about is stuff that is in the mobile game: Hockey Legacy Manager 24. Record book, History mode, post game reports, prospect creation, more impactful player overalls and attribute customization. It's hard to say whether an HLM 24 Franchise mode sim would be more entertaining than an NHL one, but for $4.49 to get the custom rosters and face packs, the total number of features and FAR superior customizable sim engine make the game 1000x better. John would love that game
The problem is other than eras 2k has been mostly stagnant for a decade already. But Unlike EA they kept more content in and added more back in after the 360 PS3 era reset. Most old school sports gaming fans tend to view the mid 2000s as the golden era and a lot was lost between Xbox and Xbox 360 and PS2 and PS3 and plenty for both EA and 2k has never returned.
@@jemo9389nobody cares about online man, they need to focus on franchise and offline game mode. It's like 3-1 in terms of people that play offline vs online
As someone that hasn’t skipped an NHL game until this year and had no idea how good NBA’s Franchise Mode was, this actually upsets me. Especially the player ratings. Can’t tell you the number of times my players randomly increase or decrease in overall for no reason
The only excuse I'll give EA NHL is that they are extremely limited by their resources. The NHL team is incredibly smaller than the likes of the FIFA and Madden teams (both of which have flawed and arguably worse GM/Franchise modes) and a majority of the budget is given to those products. They have significantly less time to add and develop a new game than their other titles. Same goes for their EA UFC game, UFC 5 just came out and it's almost the exact same as UFC 4. They just don't put enough time and resources into developing these games as they do the big ones, and it's really a shame. At least 2K and San Diego Studios (MLB) have less projects to develop.
it actually comes down to the passion the devs have for the sport & for the game. ufc for example has had massive updates for months now because someone in there started caring about the product they’re making & the sport it’s based on
I love franchise mode and especially your series of it. But the lewel of micromanagement is insane. The scouting if you want to do it proper is insane. Adjust it week by week and in a clumsy way, the injuries and the roster edits, the fact it can't automatically move down the ahl goalie when the starting player returns. Also why can't you put in how often the goalies should rotate? Or get the coach to order lives by ovr or by chemistry or by a user preference. The stagnant way a player or coach is. You tell me you couldn't tell a playmaker to shoot more or be more physical? The player might be siming individually worse but teamwise better. Etc. There is so much laking in this otherwise fun and awesome game mode. Hope you still make a series cus even if the game mode is lacking you make it come to life and be awesome.
not sure if anyone else has said it but, NBA 2k franchise mode used to be a dogshit mess of broken mechanics, for example, if you had a good young player, you could probably trade for Lebron James with enough trial and error. But it has taken a complete 180 from a neglected game mode to a amazing and fun experience. This shows that EA can also change NHL for the better. Have hope
I've been saying for the entire offline modes, they should allow full Sandbox mode, where I can edit the league as I please, all that you said for franchise mode, that I can go back, as far as I please in hockey history. Currently I play Franchise Hockey Manager for my GM experience, but I'd love my Be A Pro if I could have the chance to play in the Original Six as a prospect, to try and make it in an extremely tight league. I don't need cutscenes, let me talk to the reporters through text like in NHL 14, make the questions less repetitive, and overall let the player have control.
Great short video. I remember, my favorite hockey game is 2k 2008, yes a 2k hockey game. even back then they gave you opportunity to control multiple teams into franchise mode, a much better soundtrack, they even gave you players of the week statistics and line chemistry. in addition, they gave you options to use "practice" modes in order to enhance your team chemistry, there were options to change the style of play, and overall's of players were all over the place, it was not uncommon for 4th line to be in the low 70's, allowed for alot more player expression. also they allowed for alot of flexibility with contracts, including signing bonuses and incentives for performace. Amazing, what you could do.
The second they were able to make any money on HUT they stopped putting any effort into the other modes. It's sad, with the exception of the expansion draft there has been no new features added in almost 15 years
Johnny you should start playing Franchise Hockey Manager by Out or the Park Developments the game is so in depth and way more realistic then EAs nhl could ever be. You can do way more things in this game
Franchise Mode has actually gotten worse than last year. For some reason now you can't turn on and off auto staff signings once you start your franchise. They actually go out of their way to give you less. It also still has ALL the bugs of last year's franchise mode. They don't even fix anything... It's literally insane.
Better than in Fifa where that action of releasing staff would softlock the game until they fixed it by removing the option (you know instead of actually fixing it). Both EA games, so it does make sense kinda. Or it's a subtle cry for help from the EA staff.
EA should update free agency so you can sign players from europe and players can leave for europe ect. this game mode could be soooo much more fun but it lacks simple things. like gm progress tracker where it shows awards cups and record as a gm like they used to back in chel 14. they should also integrate a training system so you can develpoe certain aspects of players game like fifa.
For those looking for their GM mode fix… Hockey Legacy Manager 24 is a kickass phone game doing all the things EA won’t. it’s one of the most enjoyable sim experiences I’ve had and seems to be trying to fill this void.
I only buy NHL games these days to play the GM mode. Thanks for making this video. It’s obvious they don’t give a shit about their customers but we can still hope. I remember watching all of your GM series and bro this game mode is so freaking fun
Don't buy EA NHL then.. Buy Hockey Franchise Manager 9. Look up vids on youtube of it. You can do practically anything. Want to manage a team in russias bottom tier league? Go for it. How about an SHL team, yup. Want to manage a team in the ECHL? All yours. Want to be able to keep track of the statistics of the league? It's got an entire page for the history of the league and who won which awards and which teams won curtain awards. It's truly a blast. I guess the only downside is there's no gameplay and the sim is 2D. But imo the no gameplay part and getting to watch your team play without interrupting is great.
Its a flawed game too for other various reasons. But the biggest thing I love about Franchise Hockey Manager is the historic mode that let's you play as any NHL team as early as 1918 with real draft classes for each year and even has the WHA in it. I wish EA NHL would do something similiar, it's really fun playing a modern game with past players and re-drafts
It’s insane how much content is in MyNBA. The fact you can choose different eras to play in is actually ridiculous. I enjoy CFM M24 but no other franchise mode can touch what NBA offers.
well said Johnny, all of these changes can be made and should be made for the benefit of the fans and community who plays it, hell even a better overall game will attract fans from other sports who have never played the game before, word spreads nowadays. Keep preaching john, i do wonder if EA actually watch these videos
I probably played 1,000 hours of NHL 14 GM Mode on the Xbox 360 and now I don't even buy the games anymore. The coaching / line chemistry system is so fucking broken and tedious it makes the game totally unfun Scouting is similarly tedious and unfun The salary demands that the players make are totally unrealistic and make the salary cap a complete and total chore The customization (both in the league rules, teams, and players) is so far beyond other sports franchises it's laughable SO to sum that up, the only additions they have made to the game since NHL 14 have made the game SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE
Finally someone who calls a spade a spade.... FFS its past time for complete change... Hell fire up NHL 14, the game is hands down better in every way!
All the things I want to say in one vid. I spent the whole last gen from 15 onwards waiting for features to return from 14 and are still waiting. My and my bud would love GM connected to return I believe this is a feature NBA 2K has as well
For anyone that only buys EA NHL games for franchise and want something else, Franchise Hockey Manager on Steam is really, really great. Allows so much customization, more than 2K does. It's only on PC, but it's incredibly great.
I bought the last one but I never could get into it. It seems so complicated and I can't just start making trades right away, other teams only want my star players.
he showed off EHM a long time ago and never did anything with it afterwards. I don't think he was that into it, either that or it wasn't suitable for a commentary series I guess
john thank you for making videos like this. it helps alot. just by getting the community to band together, hearing other content creators talk about you and or use you as an example when discussing the same topics it helps. one day ea will pull there heads out of... the sand, and finally listen to the community. we just have to stay united and on top of the issues and liking and sharing the video will go along way. keep up the good work and lead us home general!

I’ve gone back and played nhl 2k10 recently and even that game had some of these things in it, like shooting, stickhandling, body checking, shot blocking and fighting tendencies, and the post game box scores. I want the game to have the things mentioned, and a better coaching system and revamped chemistry system. Each lines offense, defense and toughness ratings (like in the old 2k games), more accurate attributes where top forwards don’t have inflated defensive awareness for the overall, option for a third position (because some players can play c, lw and rw for example), be able to be a forward with a defense secondary position or vice versa (like Burns and byfuglien irl), import, edit snd download draft classes, eras, etc. I know it’ll never be on the level of games like Football manager (super detailed manager game btw) which is so in depth it’s actually overwhelming for new players, but these things should be in the game like nba 2k.
Something that I (and likely lots of European players) have wanted for Franchise mode is the option to be a GM for a European organization. I’d love to be able to control an SHL team and their junior team, aiming for the gold medal while also developing juniors for the NHL draft. Scouting players in different leagues, etc. And managing to keep a player from junior to retirement, and being able to hang their jersey in the rafters. Being able to stay on a team, and to get offers from other leagues like the NHL. Would’ve been awesome
The sad thing is that not only is EA way behind the other sports games in terms of franchise mode, but they're way behind even when looking back at old EA NHL games respective franchise modes. If they kept all the features that every old game came out with and improved upon them instead of just dropping them, then franchise mode would be fantastic.
It would be cool if they added No-Trade Clause. Kinda like how when you start a Franchise Mode, it asks if you would like Salary Cap on or off. So the same formula would apply when No-Trade Clause.
Here's what I want from a NHL Franchise Mode: - The ability to add conditions to the contracts (no trade/movement clauses, AHL salary, minimum salary guarantees for players on two-way deals, and AHL-only contracts.) - A full preseason game mode that starts off with a "Home colors Vs Road whites" game. - Practices in between games. - A better contract negotiation system during free agency. - Waiver rules from the start of preseason instead of having the computer bury contracts in the AHL.
The main issue with all EA Sports games is that Ultimate Team has taken over. While I play an occasional FIFA (now FC) Ultimate Team, I ask myself "Why go through the grind, loot boxes, etc of Ultimate Team when I can do Manager Mode!" and then I realize it hasn't had a major features update in years, meanwhile Ultimate Team gets constant updates. If they make Franchise Mode on NHL, manager in FC, etc good - they're cannibalizing their Ultimate Team audience. Think of how easy it is to get players that are 1 million+ coins/pucks, etc in these games in their respective Career Modes vs Ultimate Team. Tons of grinding vs...trading them beforehand by editing the team, or starting by using the team they're already on irl, or doing the 'Foreign Investor' starting choice to start with so much money that you should trade for them immediately. The reality is they will not ever update the mode if Ultimate Team racks in money, and it does.
Why EA Sports? Because it´s (not) in the game! It is so sad, that my two favorite sports (NHL and football/soccer) are made by EA. Imagine NHL or FIFA with the possibilities of 2k. I started playing MLB, because many things you mentioned are also possible there - full team control, adding injuries at any time, realistic broadcast... makes so much fun to have a realistic season... DAMN EA, DAMN
What makes this more sad is how many of the myleague youtubers out there complain about the gamemode just showing how garbage nhl franchise mode is. Franchise mode players in general are neglected and all we ask for is just the bare minimum
As someone who runs a sim league, if NHL 25 were somehow able to get that overhaul and implement controlling every team, editing players whenever you want, editing draft classes, all that stuff that NBA has or hell adding even more player controllability, they would have my money down on a pre-order tomorrow. I love the EA games despite all their flaws and it's unfortunate that's all we have right now. It's insane to think with EA owning the Madden license, that companies wanting to make sports games wouldn't try and dip their toe into the Hockey market since we've wanted someone to replace EA for so long now we're clearly a hungry fanbase who WANTS to buy any competition to EA. But then again who knows maybe EA will see another NHL game doing better and sneak their way into the exclusive license to NHL games like they did to the NFL. Which is also kind of funny yet pathetic that the NHL series are clearly the best on the market sports titles right now with the least amount of flaws, a decent (to say it politely) game *being* the best is not good at all. We can hope EA will fix their games, but until we do what wrestling fans did and refuse to buy WWE 2K20 and clown on that game (forcing 2K to take a year off to massively improve the game for 2K22), they aren't going to listen to us and fix it.
The only good part about that is that Johnny will still do a GM mode. The bad part about this is that it shows that we will still play it, no matter how bad the mode is...
Bang on as usual Johnny. The game needs to be stripped down completely and re-done. Side note though, how the hell does 2K give Siakam only an 86 overall rating?!

Nba's mode might be somewhat better, but it has some many broken elements that it's a damn mess. There are skills that have broken for multiple years and still haven't fixed it. Just copy and paste for the next year.
U fucking killed it 👍, I don’t play any other sports games so this was the first time seeing what the nba franchise looks and just the 3 minute clip u played it already blows nhl out of the water, I watched a cat play Madden the other day and there draft layout was unbelievable. If they don’t make huge changes this year ( seeing that they have new people in charge ) I’m done and it looks like I will have to start playing Madden or nba
I often feel, that there are like 5 people working on EA NHL series. Out of which one is the Boss, who is not interested. 2 are the actual developers writing code. One is a marketing guy. Finally there is the "all-around" guy, who is responsible of new ideas, future roadmaps and testing. And he has never played ice-hockey or any other sports either.
I came on here looking for NHL24 videos after being annoyed after trying the garbage Be A Pro mode and as an offline franchise player, this depressed me even more. Very well done video though- what a dream it would be to have these features in NHL25.
I think in NHL 17 you used to be able to edit players in franchise mode.... it would also glitch out and make their potential exact when they're like 22
Be a pro needs a massive overhaul too. Xfactor unlocks are ridiculous, unlocks should coincide with actually doing what the xfactor buffs.
This game is top tier!!!
I doubt Johnny would play a mobile game though
@@joell21 yeah me too, maybe he would play the PC version if it came down to it
@@erikthered9670i believe there’s a PC version coming out sometime soon
What's sad is that 2k franchise mode is still very broken but it's way more complete than NHL it's just wild
@@phightinphil25 NHL 08-12 online era was peak for this franchise
@@jemo9389 you could extend to 2006 I think. I don't disagree that there were some great games in the era you talked about though.
@@jemo9389nobody cares about online man, they need to focus on franchise and offline game mode. It's like 3-1 in terms of people that play offline vs online
Well, FHM10 will be announced in a few hours. More than enough of a franchise mode, that game.
The first UFC game is why this limitation exists.
it actually comes down to the passion the devs have for the sport & for the game. ufc for example has had massive updates for months now because someone in there started caring about the product they’re making & the sport it’s based on
I love franchise mode and especially your series of it.
Felt this on an emotional level
not sure if anyone else has said it but, NBA 2k franchise mode used to be a dogshit mess of broken mechanics, for example, if you had a good young player, you could probably trade for Lebron James with enough trial and error.
This makes me want a NBA GM mode commentary
I'd kill to watch a full carrer play through of football manager. Johnny would Crack that game wide open.
I became a football fan just because of maddens franchise. Drafted characters have pictures is huge
Eras is what I always wanted... I go back to NHL 10 etc... to redo gm modes and see how people have grown! I wish man that would be so dope
HLM 24 is by far a better franchise mode than EA NHL, imagine that on NHL 24.
You know why Franchise Mode sucks??? Why we don't have GM Connected???
Because franchise mode is HUT without the paid packs!!!!
To be fair. NHL franchise is leagues ahead of madden. I couldn't believe how shitty madden franchise mode was. Hardly playable
It’s insane how much content is in MyNBA. The fact you can choose different eras to play in is actually ridiculous. I enjoy CFM M24 but no other franchise mode can touch what NBA offers.
If we could some of these with NHL, I’d be doing the 2010’s oilers. Imagine if they drafted Vasi or Rielly instead of Yakupov 1st overall.
You gunna start a 2k franchise mode for us?
well said Johnny, all of these changes can be made and should be made for the benefit of the fans and community who plays it, hell even a better overall game will attract fans from other sports who have never played the game before, word spreads nowadays. Keep preaching john, i do wonder if EA actually watch these videos
I probably played 1,000 hours of NHL 14 GM Mode on the Xbox 360 and now I don't even buy the games anymore.
The coaching / line chemistry system is so fucking broken and tedious it makes the game totally unfun
Scouting is similarly tedious and unfun
The salary demands that the players make are totally unrealistic and make the salary cap a complete and total chore
The customization (both in the league rules, teams, and players) is so far beyond other sports franchises it's laughable
SO to sum that up, the only additions they have made to the game since NHL 14 have made the game SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE
Wow, not even a fan of basketball, but I'm tempted to try this.
I honestly haven’t even bought an nhl game since 20
My last was 18 though I wish my ps3 didn’t break down so I could still play 14
Honestly is stopped buying NHL and NBA 2k on
NHL 19 and 2k19. I haven't missed either.
Same
Same, back in the day I bought it every year 😢 so sad what the game has become
24 sucks
Finally someone who calls a spade a spade.... FFS its past time for complete change... Hell fire up NHL 14, the game is hands down better in every way!
All the things I want to say in one vid. I spent the whole last gen from 15 onwards waiting for features to return from 14 and are still waiting. My and my bud would love GM connected to return I believe this is a feature NBA 2K has as well
Jeez that NBA franchise mode makes me want to play it and I don't like basketball.
Lol you will need to hold people’s hands till they get a grasp on how to use the layout.
@@jackattack2578 it’s good to get your team sorted out b4 making trades right away
Start a series on Franchise Hockey Manager or East Side Hockey manager with updated rosters and teams
he showed off EHM a long time ago and never did anything with it afterwards. I don't think he was that into it, either that or it wasn't suitable for a commentary series I guess
Cross platform roster sharing and Gm connected need to happen. The coaching system and scouting system needs an overhaul.
the fact that you can’t check box scores & look at your lines in the offseason baffles me
john thank you for making videos like this. it helps alot. just by getting the community to band together, hearing other content creators talk about you and or use you as an example when discussing the same topics it helps. one day ea will pull there heads out of... the sand, and finally listen to the community. we just have to stay united and on top of the issues and liking and sharing the video will go along way. keep up the good work and lead us home general!
This video actually makes me want to buy NBA 2k24!
That’s what a Franchise mode should look like! Complete customisation. All the time.
2k24 has a good franchise mode. Other than that it’s not worth your money
@@robinbanks916 I’m not interested in any of the online rubbish that’s all pay to win anyway so I’ll just wait till
It’s free on ps store or cheap as chips at a sale.
2BC should play FHM
(It has nearly everything mentioned in this video)
Ohhhh, so this is actually a promo for NBA 2K, not a review for NHL24.
EA is decades behind where they were a decade ago.
Fifa (Or i guess FC now) could also take notes, all they focus on is the micro transactions which is ultimate team
I've loved franchise mode my whole life but it just feels the same every year 😢
Also the simming on nhl games are so slow compared to other games. It takes so long to sim a season
If 2 K still made NHL games franchise mode, would just be like my NBA.
It will be amazing if NHL goes towards what NBA has done for years.
Your dreaming bro been asking for this for 10 years now
@@CanadianSniperhockey I know I am.
Love the video Johnny hopefully EA can finally wake up and make some simple changes and maybe I'll buy NHL again for the first time in years
I’ve gone back and played nhl 2k10 recently and even that game had some of these things in it, like shooting, stickhandling, body checking, shot blocking and fighting tendencies, and the post game box scores.
EA should just call it NHL HUT 24. I knew it was the end of the series when they brought in NHL 13.
I think it was new in 11 actually but yea, 13 felt like the beginning of the end of the golden age for chel
Why cant we see the history of every trades we make? Cmon EA its 2023 lol
I wish 2k still made NHL games. Controlling all the teams amd mirroring all the transactions sounds fantastic
I would buy a PS5 just to play a 2K NHL game with a franchise mode half as good as this one
The sad thing is that not only is EA way behind the other sports games in terms of franchise mode, but they're way behind even when looking back at old EA NHL games respective franchise modes. If they kept all the features that every old game came out with and improved upon them instead of just dropping them, then franchise mode would be fantastic.
Sounds like Madden. Another EA ga...............................ohhh
It would be cool if they added No-Trade Clause. Kinda like how when you start a Franchise Mode, it asks if you would like Salary Cap on or off. So the same formula would apply when No-Trade Clause.
Here's what I want from a NHL Franchise Mode:
- The ability to add conditions to the contracts (no trade/movement clauses, AHL salary, minimum salary guarantees for players on two-way deals, and AHL-only contracts.)
- A full preseason game mode that starts off with a "Home colors Vs Road whites" game.
- Practices in between games.
- A better contract negotiation system during free agency.
- Waiver rules from the start of preseason instead of having the computer bury contracts in the AHL.
That NBA franchise mode sounds awesome!
Closest thing to eras is my throwback rosters which still have a bit too much limitations but glad at least custom league is a thing now
Would love a franchise mode on 2K from you, a nice twist on what we’re used to and can expose some people to another amazing sport
hey Johnny I've been watching your gm mode since nhl11 and I too have put hours into gm mode since nhl11. But since I got 2k23 last year the Franchise Mode in it has been so much better then what you get in nhl it's a shame. P.S love these vids
Nba's mode might be somewhat better, but it has some many broken elements that it's a damn mess. There are skills that have broken for multiple years and still haven't fixed it. Just copy and paste for the next year.
facts bro mynba eras is cool but it’s so half assed
It's the ultimate troll that Johnny finally picks up the Nashville franchise mode again, the moment NHL24 releases 😂
I came on here looking for NHL24 videos after being annoyed after trying the garbage Be A Pro mode and as an offline franchise player, this depressed me even more. Very well done video though- what a dream it would be to have these features in NHL25.
madden has an awesome system for giving players abilities/x-factors, would love to see NHL adopt it
I think in NHL 17 you used to be able to edit players in franchise mode.... it would also glitch out and make their potential exact when they're like 22
Waiting for 2k gameplay
2k needs to get the NHL rights its the only way
Be a pro needs a massive overhaul too. Xfactor unlocks are ridiculous, unlocks should coincide with actually doing what the xfactor buffs. Need to add at least one season of Juniors be that CHL, NCAA, SHL before the draft. I’d like to play a season and start in the 2025-26 season. Let me do my own stats before the create a character is done similar to EASHL
Dude you’re the reason I started playing GM Mode this way
Cool video! Has there been complaints and issues with Season Mode as it seems to crash and or freeze to where you can not play games. I thought NHL 23 was bad but it seems NHL 24 is doing the same thing for Season Mode. I have restarted a new season thinking the issue would be gone but no. Very frustrating that I can't play any games . Can you shed some help with this. Thank you
Just think if Johnny starts a team in the 90s. That would be so cool. As a huge NFL guy. I wish madden would do this.
Holy I wish 2k would make a hockey game! It would be awesome to have some of those features in nhl franchise
Hockey Legacy Manager is a great EA GM upgrade, but it's a phone app. It solves so many of the problems of NHL GM mode with obvious limitations, but the base game is just so much better
Couldn't agree more!
