    Hi Krista, It's Sue from Australia. I searched around and found a book shop down in Sydney who has your book so I ordered one. It arrived yesterday. I have already read it. Now I know where I have been going wrong from time to time. This book will go with me when I next buy some batting. I feel so much more informed about what I am looking for and what type to use for what I am sewing. A lot more thought will be going into my purchases now instead of … oh this looks like it could be alright... and sometimes it wasn't and I was never sure why but now I am in the know. Thank you Krista.

    Hello, I used double thickness 100% warm & natural batting in a lap quilt for my daughter. She said it was great from her April birthday until the fall and then she said it didn't seem to have any warmth to it. I have been told a few different things - got to use flannel, minky... backing. Cotton batting isn't warm. Have to use a blend. I can see from your post that you know batting. Do you cover warmth factors in your little book? That was wonderful information about the thin polyester for place mats or table runners. I have a plan to make a few sets for Holiday gifts. So glad I caught that tip. Thank you, Isla Perreault

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 роки тому

      I did cover the warmth factor in the book under each kind of battings characteristics. In your situation I would suggest at least one layer of blended batting that involves some (or all) polyester... Wool batting is very warm, but isn't the best for high use quilts that need washing from time to time. Polyester batting is warm because it doesn't breath well and traps body heat the best, Minky backing will do the same thing. Any natural fiber batting or backing will breath and thus lose body heat, so avoid those if you need added warmth. I hope that helps!

    Thank you for the information Krista. It came at a perfect time for me. I usually use 80/20 but I've had a package of polyester batting and was going to use that until you mentioned about difficulty quilting. Think I will go back to my 80/20 for this quilt. Almost made my quilt sandwich today. Glad I didn't!

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 роки тому

      The polyester will be good for something someday... but it's a lot to try and get through your sewing machine and have it look right in the end :) besides the 80/20 will hold up to more washings!

    Thank you very much, this is very helpful. The problem that I have is that my family likes fluffy quilts and I do like quilts that show off my quilting, but I do not like using petroleum based products due to their sustainability issues. I was going to attempt wool, but the quilts will be used quite heavily so I am not sure how to achieve the look and quality of a polyester or cotton blend batting without using polyester.

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 роки тому

      Hmmm, that is a problem Andrea, wool does make the coziest quilts... you just don't want to be washing them all the time. They wash up fine, but they take some extra care during the washing process and that could get laborious.

    This is something I really need. I have learnt from some horrible experiences that batting can either make or break a sewing project. However, I live in Australia. Is there a digital version of your book? I'd really like to have one but in the current state of our Australia Post if I bought a book from America, I might never see it this year, or at all!! LOL

    • @suestutzle2779
      @suestutzle2779 4 роки тому

      @@kristamoser Thank you Krista. I'll look into it. If your book is already here in Australia somewhere I will be able to get one but if it has to come from America it could be lengthy ( or scary ) because it's not how fast America gets it to Australian shores, it's what Australia Post does with it after that as they are swamped with extra online purchases and things don't move as smoothly as they once did and there is no end in sight to this dilemma. I am determined to get one though, one way or another!!!

    Thanks for these tips. I just made my first quilt for my young son out of his baby/toddler clothes and I used 100% cotton batting. It is so thin and it doesn't keep him warm. I wish I had used something else. Is the 80/20 blend warmer?

    • @kristamoser
      @kristamoser  4 роки тому +1

      Yes it is a little warmer due to the 20% polyester. You could also try a higher weight 100% cotton (sometimes listed as oz) I've used 6oz 100% cotton and it was extremely warm!
