I'm an American addicted to British dramas. Despite the occasional mayhem, there's this underlying sense of civilized restraint and stability that makes me feel everything's going to be OK. And the way they speak. Even when they're poisoning somebody's tea, their accents while they're doing it are so wonderful, who cares?
You are 100% correct. I lived in London area 3 yrs and embarrassed by our tv...I own all Poirots, all Midsomer Murders, all Rosemary & Thyme's because England has the best.....IF LA/NY AGENTS WERE SMART...they would represent all the Brit actors they could get...... but their not so smart
DivineSimply..., well said. I'm American too (only 26 years old), and I can't get enough of civilized society. The British BBC, and the Canadian CBC, as well as the Australian version too. Now, y'all are watching Canada's "Murdoch Mysteries", yes? What a treat! Much love...,
I love this series. It's strange how the actors and their characters somehow become these welcomed friends. Very special people, talented actors, gifted writers, and outstanding production staff.
That is to bad cuz John (Tom’s cousin) and Sarah and baby Betty are a great way to still enjoy the series. Please try them, they are different people but still worth a watch 🕊
Midsummer Murders was a brilliant British crime series! John Nettles is a clever actor. I've heard him narrate certain documentaries, he has a unique speaking voice
He also is a historian. Early life (part of an entry on Wikipedia) Nettles was born in St Austell, Cornwall, in 1943. His birth mother was an Irish nurse who came to work in Great Britain during the Second World War. He was adopted at birth by carpenter Eric Nettles and his wife Elsie. As a youth he attended St Austell Grammar School.[4][5] In 1962, he studied history and philosophy at the University of Southampton. There he first performed as an actor, and after graduation he joined the Royal Court Theatre.[6] So, maybe that's why he liked to narrative documentaries from time to time. And yes indeed, he has an enjoyable voice!
Watched all 14 seasons straight through here in .US and sooo in love with this show! Can't believe Tom, ?Joyce and Cully are all gone now. Nooooo! Loved it and love Netflix for having it.
My wife and I (in the USA) only discovered MM with Tom/Nettles a few years ago. We are not going through the series for the second time. But we only watch up until Nettles leaves. His family - Joyce and Cully - and his team Jones and George were the show for us. The stories were clever or cute or just so-so, but the characters as portrayed were the attraction. I’ve read the books, too, and they dim beside this fine group of actors.
He lost his touch or so he thought. The clues were right there but he was due a break. His ' cousin' adds a different angle, less intuition more intellect.I do miss John Nettles. I'm hoping for a guest appearance
Tom Barnaby & George the forensic bloke both retired due to sheer exhaustion. Six gruesome murders a week over an 8 year period in a quiet picture book setting took its toll.
We Indian fans admire and love John nettles. Trying to replace him is like dropping a rose petal down the grand canyon of Arizona and listen to its echo!
Love the show, but too bad they cut the scene where Barnaby announces his retirement. It was really good, and made a great transition from Tom to John.
It would have been senseless to try and duplicate Nettle's character and the 'in the background' supporting family members in the new production. They had to be different but the familial connection to the old has been maintained and is evident for lovers of the original programme. I miss Nettles greatly but Neil Dudgeon has taken over seamlessly establishing that connection well for us to enjoy, but as someone said, he brings a different approach to the deduction and solving of the crimes. The wife and dog make a cheery, upbeat change as does the adorable baby. Long may it continue.
Nobody could replace John Nettles. Sorry but Midsommer IS him. Loved relaxing with this show every night after extremely stressful day. Realllly miss it!!
I agree, applewrangler!. Every episode is on Netflix for free (well after your monthly subscription, that is). I reluctantly started watching the last few seasons without Nettles and it's just NOT the same show at all. Everyone's gone! The whole family AND his sidekick? I mean wow. I watch anyway for the scenery and I love their accents. I still find it relaxing. But nope, the show is just not the same for me after everyone left.
Just finished watching a complete re-run of MM no doubting it Nettles was the best and the other guy was ok. Now I have put the sets away for another 4/5 years before I get the urge to watch them all again. It takes a pleasant 2 weeks of my time up and well worth it I can say.
Another Barnaby fan from Croatia... I love him, the character, and the actor. :) New Barnaby, I can't really process him... doesn't fit, allways missing Tom... Only Sykes is the good novelty in the show. ;)
Oh and Sincerest Devotion from the US!!! The new guy is...well, eh *sigh* passable. He's actually a wonderfully talented actor. I've enjoyed him immensely in other roles...but he falls completely, and utterly flat as Nettle's successor. Nettles IS Barnaby, and I miss him SO much!!!
I had a friend in Asia who was an addict. One of the reasons was the quality of the spoken English. There are the occasional characters with regional accents but generally all articulate Received Pronunciation English.
I am in love with Midsomer Murders which I am constantly watching on Netflix. I love the series and have gone from watching my favorite Murder She Wrote to this one (no commercials) I will miss Tom Barnaby but John is good at keeping that role interesting .
I miss him too! Finally in Holland they show Midsomer Murders again, and there's a different Barnaby! Whith another wife and the pictures aren't as oldfashioned and lovely English anymore. Thank God we can watch the series on Belgian tv.
I don't know if I'm the only Filipino fan, but i really, really love midsomer murders! It's my slice of heaven after a day of looking after my kids. I love the Tom Barnaby episodes because they epitomize the English country life. The John Barnaby episodes are more modern.
As many, I only watch the episodes with Tom. The cousin is ok, too, but the new series gradually got some sort of flavour which I do not like. As someone commented: "When I was watching, I always had a feeling that everything is going to be ok." And this is what disappeared. The wholesomeness. The Old Good England. God save the screen....
A great show! Love to watch the reactions and interactions between Barnaby and his DSs. Haven’t yet seen any of the newer Barnaby-less episodes. Not looking forward to it
this is my favorite show classic British show with class and elegance. I wish that all members create a new how where both Baranby's and all former sgts would come together to form a new police dept and solve crimes together as a super team.
Thank You John Bettles xoxoxo Love and blessings n healing from Pronce Edward Island Canada to you your family and animals you so livingly care for!!!! Huuuuggggeeee Hugs
Brazilian fans miss you too, John Barnaby. The latest plots were becoming very weird and silly. And was missing Barnaby from the beginning of series, the way he used to boss Troy and Jones around. I am sad yet at the same time glad he left because it was getting ridiculous ...
Midsomer Murders was great with Tom because he was congenial as were the rest of the regulars. The stories were interesting. They were not "barking" at each other to create interest/tension as they are now in the series. The new cast the wife is unlikeable and we don't care about their sex life, the new Barnaby is smug and unlikeable. There is open hostility between the coroner and the team. Who wants to watch that. They missed the mark when they chose these characters to continue the series. People want personable/relatable characters, a problem to solve as in the murder and beautiful scenery. That is the winning combination.
I love John Nettles. I have been watching 'Midsomer Murders' on AcornTV. I wish they would have his other series available. I have abandoned US tv - Love the Australian and Canadian series also.
You know one would think a murder mystery is not relaxing but this one is all off them I love his accent and the scenery it beats American tv any day , because it has that touch off class\
I'm American and I agree. I much prefer British mysteries and detective shows. Give me Midsomer Murders, Morse, Endeavor, Inspector Lewis, and anything by Agatha Christie and I'm happy.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED JOHN NETTLES. He was the best I was so upset when he left the show. I wish he would have stayed a few more seasons. I’ve warched all the seasons 2 times now I wish there were more
I don’t like Mid Summer now John has gone, I only watch it because of John, what is he going to do with himself now!? A good long break and spending time resting and well deserved it is indeed, you put your feet up John and rest yourself I hope you come back doing something good though I don’t want you to disappear and for you to retire so make sure you rest well for your next chapter God Bless you Sir!💞✝️🙏🏻😛
While I miss John Nettles very, very much, I do not find the replacement a deal breaker. The show is still very intelligent and engaging. Neil Dudgeon is believable as a similar, yet different, cousin. And the way he and Jones worked out their relationship was excellent. I like the dog and Sarah LOADS better than Joyce and Cully, who I mostly found beyond irritating. Just my humble opinion. I will watch this show for as long as there are episodes to watch. I also really, really miss the pathologist, George Bullard. I do not find his replacement NEARLY as engaging.
+keepdancingmaria I understand your point about Joyce & Cully. Although, I enjoyed Joyce coming up with partial solutions to the mysteries inadvertently.
+keepdancingmaria I agree with you. As much as I loved Tom, I've grown to enjoy watching John just as much. It was because of this, In fact, that I didn't 'knee jerk' an instant dislike to Jones' replacement Nelson. My only problem with Tom was that if he'd been a top notch detective, he'd have known to go ahead and roll an ambulance to the locations of any and all of Joyce's crafts and past times. She should have been the primary suspect in almost all the cases as she was always there. :P
If the new Barnaby is supposed to be a relation of Tom Barnaby, then why didn't he (Tom) recognise him as such when he appeared as the philandering gardener in Garden of Death trying to conduct an intrigue with his wife, Joyce?
I'd like that in England Barnaby Inspector producer know that this serie has been great success here in Italy since early years and nowdays, too. Go on 😊
John Nettles was the heart of the show. I was liking how Stephens started to pick up some of his mannerisms. They should have done a spin-off with the cousin instead of trying to replace him and Jones is acting way too happy that the star is gone. This show will never be what it was. The best episodes were the first ones with his first partner.
I'm binge watching MM and I'm on Season 11, Episode 7. I know that soon Nettles will be gone in a future episodeand I'm so used to him within this last month or 2. Will I be able to accept the new Barnaby? We will see.
Inspector Barnaby is undoubtedly my preferred program I follow in TV. About my opinion John Nettles has ruled this policeman at best way, even if the new actor which has substituted him make good jobs, too.... Every crime story, however, is amazing and really well made!!!! And I love Sommerset places and landscapes in which they are ambiented!!
John Nettles.. fans all over Argentina miss you a lot. Please do come back from time to time. The series without you is not that appealing anymore. In fact, I haven't watched it again since you left

Pip Baxter babies aren’t adorable 😉
they went from crime tv show into semi soap opera
Midsommer ended when Nettles left. No one can replace him. It is all done now.
Just loved the cast of midsomer murders and miss them, but have learned to love the new cast! There are always reruns when I need a Tom fix!
For the non-UK audience...if you love John Nettles in Midsomer Murders, check out his earlier work in Bergerac
Nobody could replace John Nettles. Sorry but Midsommer IS him. Loved relaxing with this show every night after extremely stressful day. Realllly miss it!!
I haven't watched this show since John Nettles left as it is not the same without him in it. I am trying to buy all the seasons that he was in .

I love Midsummer Murders, I hope that they never stop !
I never realised that Midsomer got so much attention around the world. I thought it was only popular in the UK. Like everyone else, I miss Barnaby.
This show got me through isolation 2020.
Great Actor
It's so sad John Nettles left.. Personally I see no point in continuing to watch MM without him. Again - very sad. A fan from Russia
Just finished watching a complete re-run of MM no doubting it Nettles was the best and the other guy was ok. Now I have put the sets away for another 4/5 years before I get the urge to watch them all again. It takes a pleasant 2 weeks of my time up and well worth it I can say.
Missed in the USA funny the only thing on US TV worth watching is from the UK
Here here!

Oh, So True! ❤️
Another Barnaby fan from Croatia... I love him, the character, and the actor. :) New Barnaby, I can't really process him... doesn't fit, allways missing Tom... Only Sykes is the good novelty in the show. ;)

Nettles IS Barnaby, and I miss him SO much!!!
Almost as upsetting to me when Richard Poole killed off in season 3 of Death in Paradise. At leadt Tom still alive and had potential for guest spot.
Message is pretty clear... life is short take time to be with your family till you can :)
And it was an analogy to Nettles own life away from his.
I don’t watch it anymore since John’s gone. To me, he’s the perfect character of DI Barnaby.
I had a friend in Asia who was an addict. One of the reasons was the quality of the spoken English. There are the occasional characters with regional accents but generally all articulate Received Pronunciation English.
John Nettles, we miss you as Tom Barnaby! Cried when I realized this was your last episode!
I just found out it was John Nettles final episode, we still get re runs in Australia thankfully as I have not seen them all.
John Nettles .. MM will not be same without you ..
i miss the original cast from this show! thank goodness for britbox!!!!
The show without John Nettles is no longer Midsummer Murders.
no it is not. now it is midsomer murders.
I think Neil Dudgeon replaced him well
I am in love with Midsomer Murders which I am constantly watching on Netflix. I love the series and have gone from watching my favorite Murder She Wrote to this one (no commercials) I will miss Tom Barnaby but John is good at keeping that role interesting .
Thought I'd add a farewell from Canada as well... great show, great actor!
I miss him too! Finally in Holland they show Midsomer Murders again, and there's a different Barnaby! Whith another wife and the pictures aren't as oldfashioned and lovely English anymore. Thank God we can watch the series on Belgian tv.
The murder was of the series by having Nettles leave. They were so young when the series started
John Nettles: cute! Irreplaceble.
I really enjoy watching this show on PBS, and hope others do too.
thanks for uploading this clip!

The new Mk2 Barnaby isn't that bad .. c'mon give him a go ... he makes up for the other Barnaby by having such a gorgeous little dog Sykes

Never over acted. A great DCI Tom Barnby. I enjoy Midsomer murders. However, I miss Tom's character.
John Nettles IS Inspector Barnaby no one else
I would LOVE to see John Nettles return as the murderer in an episode. What delicious fun that would be!
No...
If the new Barnaby is supposed to be a relation of Tom Barnaby, then why didn't he (Tom) recognise him as such when he appeared as the philandering gardener in Garden of Death trying to conduct an intrigue with his wife, Joyce?
Throughout the years of the show, various actors have reappeared in a different role. I'm sure this is what happened here.
Richard Kolb Yea, whatever. Including those who were murdered time and time again.
French fans miss you Barbaby.
I'd like that in England Barnaby Inspector producer know that this serie has been great success here in Italy since early years and nowdays, too. Go on 😊

The best Barnaby ! A great episode,I think the end, when all know He will left, was too short, more emotional!
Please consider coming back to Midsomer murders...if only for 1 more season.

John Nettles is alive, as of July 25, 2024
The onl thing worth watching on German Television. Now we are watching his Rerubs. Better than nothing
I liked watching MM, but only with Tom Barnaby. Fan from Poland. A lot of health and happiness for him.
