Exactly! He speaks the way dear Karl Lagerfeld did with the speed and "eha?" at the end of sentences and I loved ever minute! What a wealth of information ... How long can he speak like that?! Machine-gun Kelly! Just a completely unnecessary observation ... His knowledge was absolutely awesome and inspiring. Philip must have been dying! I wish there had been time at the end to observe Stephanie and Philip's reactions. How lucky that engraving was found that showed them where things used to be. He and we would have been lost without it! And a BIG "Thank You!" to Stephanie for the subtitles! ❤
Yes ! =D As a french myself i had to take a little break here and there to digest the informations and to let my brain breathe a second I love the accent of this man. I have never heard a person speak so well english and i the same time with a so strong sweet french accent.
I REALLY appreciate the time you took Stephanie, to create the subtitles! I imagine that took a long time so please know it was much appreciated! It was so fascinating but the subtitles really helped and I loved listening to him! ❤️🇨🇦
Wow! He is so well spoken and knowledgeable about the chateau. There is so much history there and all over Europe and it really is amazing that he gets to live surrounded by such historical treasure. Thank you for letting us come into your beautiful home and for telling us so many astounding facts and stories.
This was excellent and fascinating. I had to pay close attention because he spoke very quickly with his accent, but I got enough to be amazed at the knowledge he has of the history of this Chateau. Very enjoyable!
Wow. All I can say is wow. I must say that all of a sudden through his talking through the castle I have realised what my own Manoir; constructed in the 13th/14th Century was all about! The kitchens running along the ground floor; the arrow slits; lower courtyard - the bakery; chapel - even to the grande salle of the 18th century and the configuration of the top larger rooms for courtiers. I understand at last completely my previous place in France. Thankyou so much Stephanie. x
Stephanie, another great find, this Chateau was so massive and stunning. The history dating back to the 13th and 14th century is unbelievable, not to mention the condition of the place, thank you for the subtitles. This is one for the books. Thank you so much.
I throughly enjoyed every minute of this! And as I set here in the hospital waiting for a 2 hour CTScan, it is the perfect distraction!! The history is fascinating, the chateau stunningly beautiful with so many original parts . Thank you for taking me away to the earlier centuries where I can imagine Margaret of Flanders in her royal gowns kneeling in her chapel❤
Glorious! Stephanie thank you for taking the extra time to do the subtitles. What a breathe taking tour. I love how he keeps all the centuries as you have at your own Chateau. A wonderful history lesson.
Fantastic tour!! Thank for the time you put in on the captions. I followed pretty well, but it was nice to read to get the full impact on this knowledgeable Owner and Guide. Wobnderfull production value, very profession video. Thank you, Philip for the incredible camera work.
What an interesting and incredible history lesson. Matthew is like a walking encyclopedia of history regarding this spectacular chateau. Thanks for sharing and wish we could see more of this incredible chateau 😍😘
Fabulous tour Stephanie and Philip! The history and legend of this chateau is mythical. The different layers of time and history embodied in the chateau came to life by Matthieu's tale. Thank you also for the subtitles Stephanie. I need to read more about Ivanhoe and Lodine.
What a FANTASTIC tour! So much interesting information about the history!! Loved every second. ❤️This man is a walking history book! Love how lively he gets when he talks about this chateau.
My God this man takes one back to the 13th and 14th century in an instant in a way that is breathtaking with knowledge and foresight that very few people can purvey ! This is totally and absolutely fascinating !!! Well done Stephanie and Philip . One of the very best. Ever Vlogs . Breathtaking x
This was an amazing tour and history lesson! Thank you! The Duke and Duchess of Burgundy were such important patrons of the arts. My jaw dropped to see the preserved wall painting with their mongrams (outstanding!) and to see another example of Claus Sluter--who made the most moving "weeping" or "pleurants" for the base of Philip and Margaret's tomb (if you've never seen them--they are spectacular).
Wow! That was absolutely fascinating! Matthew was so generous sharing his Wealth of knowledge and passion for the treasure trove of history and preservations of his chateau and important French history. With Stephanie’s observations and respectful appreciation, intertwined with literary & historical references, this was such an eye opener, educational & intriguing. The intelligence, personality & pace of Matthew’s passion.. and articulation in sharing this, was a buzz! Thank you!
You know sometimes in a 40 min video you can have a lag in interest, some parts are a little boring, but this was fascinating! I was surprised when it ended!! He is such wealth of knowledge, what a cool place!
I'm only 16 minutes in and I have to stop and say thank you. I am so grateful that you are going to these places so that I can sit back here in Ohio and see them! It is so generous of all of you. I am always in awe of people who speak fluently in a native tongue and then are able to interject humor, sarcasm and idioms and he speaks English quicker than ANY American I've ever heard!
Through history, we can learn how past societies, systems, ideologies, governments, cultures and technologies were built, how they operated, and how they have changed.
He is passionate about his family’s history. I just had to watch till the end. A wonderful storyteller! He brought it all to life! The speed of his narration and his accent made it all the more fascinating.
Thank you for sharing this with us! Such amazing place with beautiful stories. And the owners passion and knowledge of the place is very inspiring. I could listen to the history of this chateau for hours if not longer!
C’est spectaculaire! I don’t know much French but that much is apparent! How generous for him to tour us and in English. The medieval wall painting was not what expected! Thank you for sharing this!
Stephanie! 🙀I have no words!! Seriously, I have watched this 3 times😍 (Noticing some new detail each time) Matthieu’s passion for Chateau de Germolles is infectious!! He reminds me of Ivo Fornesa who is also such a passionate historian. The 3 part vlog you did of his Chateau in Saint Chartier would fit in well on this channel!!💕💕
Fabulous! We had a visit at Chateau de Germolles with the owner one evening in 2018, just the two us and this lovely gentleman. Such a charming plan and gentleman. We have a few items we bought from if lovely little shop and remember with great fondness this visit. Worth the short detour from Beaune and the building needs all of our support. Thank you Stephanie!
OK I love Matthieu - so knowledgeable and he told the story of his chateau with such joy and vigor. Such a fascinating Structure and filled with wonderful architectural details. I could listen to him forever and learn so much. Stephanie you are really sharing such interesting people and history with us and for that I thank you.
that was so enriching in history and captivating! What a tourguide we had..every detail comes to life with his words..thank you Stephanie for this wonderful insight into a morsel of french history!
Absolutely beautiful Stephanie, well done darling finding these beautiful chateaus to explore: absolutely breath taking and the history is fantastic. Thank you so much to you and Phillip for sharing . Lisa xx ❤️😘👍
Fascinating! This gentleman is so knowledgeable and so well spoken. I have really enjoyed listening to him & hearing the history of the palace. Thank you Stephanie & Phillip.🇨🇦
This gentleman was wonderful, what a wealth of information, it was just like having a history lesson and I could have listened to him for hours. Absolutely the best video so far.
Absolutely stunning. His vast knowledge is his love for the chateau. One can easily tell by his enthusiasm as he spoke. Thank you for this marvelous tour. You must of felt honored to see and feel everything.
That was definitely worth seeing a second time. I'd forgotten how enjoyable the episode was. The Châtelain was so knowledge about the history of his home. Even though he talked the whole time, but it was quite interesting. My one unanswered question, where does he live? Bravo, Stephanie! ❤ from TX!
This is an absolutely amazing discovery! What a historian. Please, give us more of this. Plus the subtitles are wonderful for people that speak English as a second language. What a guy!!!
Hello from Nashville, Tennessee! It's a much chateau but Stephanie, you were right! I had a very hard time understanding him. I got some of what he said but not all. Everywhere you have shown me on your new channel has been wonderful! The rich history and such interesting people who know the history of their home. It's all amazing to me. Here in Nashville, they tear everything down and build a highrise building. We have very little history to see. We must go to the State Historical Office to see any pictures of how things here decades ago. I am so happy to know not every country just tears its history down. Thank you for another informational video!
Holly smokes, did he have oxygen tank on his back? Ha, he was talking a million words per min & I never saw him breath! Loved it, very informative ! I love this history & the stories they tell. Cheers Kirk
Matthieu is a remarkable man of knowledge and no doubt wisdom too. His enthusiasm was infectious and exceedingly speedy, thank you Stephanie for the last minute subs as I needed them to keep up with the history. Side note I also got a good giggle with auto-correct word playing.
So very interesting! I really enjoyed the video! The perfectly wonderful man that gave the tour....many thanks! I want to know if his home is in the chateau or is the chateau a museum? It looks like a museum, open for tours, with him being the most amazing tour guide. Thank you to all that made this fun journey happen!!
Stephanie, I hope one day you get a knock on your door offering you to host/present documentaries on TV. You are not only entertaining and incredibly knowledgeable yourself, but a born presenter. Very well done and fascinating. I look forward to the next one. From one of your devoted patreons.
Such grand palace, Chateau de Germolles! Thank you, Stephanie, for sharing this honor you have had touring this lovely home, and meeting with MATTHEW who certainly knowns his history well and explains it all so well! Just to think how many powerful Dukes have had the opportunity to own this Palace, and although not always easy and especially when you must lose your life fighting for your country, No matter even if you must fight your rights with the leader. Yet this duke could keep a great honor for so many years into the future, for doing the best they could for what they believed in . This was so exciting to be able to get to see the palace and learn so much of its history and to see how it all began for the families who lived and are living this lovely time in history even now! We are all part of it all in some way. We must play our parts where we are!
Wow, the amount of history that house has is absolutely incredible! Thank you so much for touring this palace and having such a passionate owner telling us all about all the details we might have missed.
Oh, my goodness... I understood him perfectly - but that was ALOT of history in a very short time 😂 It is a bit sad, to think of all the Chateaux, that are either derelict and crumbeling ruins, or already gone, because of all the history, that also disappeared.
Oh my gosh ! … I’m coming to France .. I could listen to this history forever.. something is calling me !! Thank you , Stephanie , for creating this channel- I’ve been watching since you started The Chateau Diaries and I now know France is on my bucket list! ❤❤😊

It’s like getting a history lesson from an espresso machine. My favorite tour video yet.
