I'm glad you guys are going for the A-10A vs the A-10C and restricting the loadout. The A-10C has so many extra features that make it OP (MWS, Datalink, TAD, etc). Good vid!

I don't fly my L-39 often but if i can advise a newcomer: don't think you have to start with a trainer aircraft, quite the opposite actually. If you find the idea of starting with a trainer enticing, just get the F-5E instead.
@@BetterOnichThanSorry If you really like that plane go for it, i was only making the argument that you don't have to start on trainers (unlike in real life) but it's not an easy plane to get anything done with because it's fairly barebone systemwise.
I started with the Su-33, then bought the F-16, I put the F-16 down after a week for being too complex, and bought the L-39 on sale. I have been playing dcs only for 8 months and so far it’s all I fly! Once ready il check out your server with it.
Mig19 radar is functionally useless? Harsh. But true. LOL. That said, I love the 19. But the 21 is so much more capable. I love love love the early Soviet era jets
Also, yes ... as an owner of both the 19 and 21... the 19 is MUCH easier to learn than the 21. The 21 is much easier than any modern jet, even the m2000 seems complex when you compare the two
@@gamedev3392 the problem with the mig-19's radar is the ground clutter. Since in DCS you tend to always be flying low, it ends up giving you too little info and still triggering the bandits RWR
Here's what I would say about the trainers - I have both and fly them more often than the fighters or ground attackers. They love to be around the same altitudes as the SU-25 and the A-10, which makes them great for hunting those planes. If an attacker gets jumped by a trainer, they are forced to drop their ordnance to defend, in which case the trainer has already done its job. Although their initial turn rate is high, they quickly burn energy against the dedicated afterburning fighters and in a sustained fight, they're sitting ducks. I put them in very much the same category as the MiG-15 and Sabre where you are willfully putting yourself at a disadvantage for the challenge, and you have a very small window to make things happen. They have significant problems on the Cold War server, however, foremost being the flight times. In a ground-attack setup, with the front line pushed well towards Tbilisi, it still took me 32 minutes to reach blue territory in the L-39. Once a side loses their forward airbase, the trainers become mostly irrelevant. They desperately need a series of road bases to keep their flight times on par with the interceptors, since their impact on the battle is usually minuscule and fast reinforcements are not relevant to balance - I'm sure this will come eventually. They need to have a purpose beyond being a worse version of the other jets - like Blue Flag's recon feature, being able to direct small bomber strikes as a reward for flying into a dangerous area in a jet with very little chance of survival. Perhaps being able to mark targets with smoke when close enough to aid their attackers? Overall I'm loving this server and it's yielded some of the best high-altitude dogfights I've had in a while.
Thanks for a thoughtful response. We are still fleshing things out. We are trying to avoid implementing mechanics from other servers just because other servers do it. With that said, we will have an open mind as we think things through.
So I just got started on your server two days Ago and I would highly encourage everyone with a small budget and little sim experience to pick up the SU-25A and get started on that. It's a cheap way to get into multiplayer and it's a lot of fun to fly! The flightmodel is fairly dynamic and really not as much of a sitting duck as the 25T that you get for free and it has a high survivability. I wasn't sure if I'd have any fun in a SU-25 model on a multiplayer server but boy was I surprised! Yesterday I wiped out a SAM-site on my first sortie and nursed the severely damaged 25A home on a single engine and with shot up wings and unoperational landing gear. Dropped my tanks and rockets and belly-landed that thing at 400km/h at Kutaisi. I don't know how I did it, but it worked :-D I've been sitting on the runway for a good 4 minutes before all of the repairs were done which surely pissed off some people but I mean.. I couldn't really do anything about it. Repaired and Refuled I went for the industrial targets and I managed to shoot up the remaining four oil rigs, before turning to the coast for an airstrike on the factory. Got intercepted by an F5 and somehow managed to outmaneuver him to gain enough time to send my last missile off to hit the target. Needless to say that the dogfight after that didn't exactly go in my favour but I still had a blast! So if all you guys own is one of the FC3 planes - it doesn't matter! Just go for it and try to be as useful for the campaign as you can with what you have. You can take my word for it, that none of those planes are obsolete and everyone will find a way to get involved ;-)
I absolutely agree with the verdict on the Viggen. Fast in faster out and you can so much with it. It’s not easy to get use to because of the old computer also the RWR is not as good - it will warn you but you will ignore it more often or even turning the damn thing off. With the road based on the CW Server it is probably one of the most interesting jets.
I have a lot of modules. Started with the A-10C(!) I am enjoying a module for a while and then try another, and returning later for the modules that click with me. The FC3 models can be alot of fun, if you want to get in the air quickly and not get system overwhelmed. Flight model on par with full fidelity modules. Strangely the FC3 is regarded as noob modules, but since not a clickypit, you need to map alot of buttons to a good Hotas to get full enjoyment. Because of the Enigma Cold War server, I have decided to learn and map up the A-10A. Quite a few buttons to map/bind/remember if you want the full pleasure of the module. I have actually mapped alot more buttons to my Hotas, compared to the F-16 or Hind. See all you Hinds and Hips in the sky 😈
I advise to handle the mix of cockpit camera in/out better by recalibrating the view for example or just using the zoom function (without cockpit cam) in order to avoid those awful and irritating perspective distortions that were visible throughout the entire video. Other than that a really neat review!
Flew in this server last Iggy in my f5. Love the server it’s my new favourite, just feel really realistic without people shooting me with medium or long range missiles which is nice
i really wish we had a full fidelity A10A. If you have the A10C/CII flying the A10A really sucks. Its a pretty bad module as far as low fidelity goes(some are actually a lot better than others). I feel like it would make more sense for cold war servers to just include the A10C/CII but limited to A10A ordinance. the C and CII are better in a lot of other ways, but the game changing stuff is really ordinance. I think that the amount of A10As you see being used on cold war servers just goes to show. Regarding the C101 and L39, they are actually decent modules and somewhat capable light attack jets. The C101 is also a top notch module regarding support, bugs, and realism! Graphics aren't bad either!
Have to second this, the trainer jets are actually tons of fun to fly and can be a good way to force yourself to learn how to do A2G without tons of systems assisting you.
@@darklorty sounds like we have a lot in common XD. I have 11 modules though, the only one i don't know how to use is the F-18, i just haven't got around to learning it yet even though i got it months ago. Most of the cold war modules are pretty easy to figure imo. I still need to learn some modules though. But learning them is fun and watching videos and doing the procedures really helps to put them to memory.
Hi, I bought the L-39 as my first module and went pretty hardcore on it. Cons: it has no flares or Chav. Only signal flares which are useless. With that said, the L-39Z can carry radio and heat missiles. For anti air. It excels at ground attack, can carry double rocket pods, or double bombs. Has a decent internal gun that can be loaded with multiple ammunition’s, but is best for ground attack. It’s air speed is 300 / 310 flying straight, and it’s a little bit faster than the frog foot or the A-10. Hope that helps people out. Out of all the planes in DCS, the L-39 when sitting in the back seat has a very wide canopy and allows you to see a lot. So I switch from seat one to two and fly it from both, then back to front seat when I have to fire!
The L39 is a really rough module for a first module. I would really recommend trying out the Viggen, Mig-21 or F-5 as an alternative so don't get discouraged.
Maybe change c101 against the a4. The mod is the only mod on level of a full price module, it fits into the era and it is for free, so new players with no bought modules can join the server
A bit sad you put the F-14A on the server but no mirage, it's the same timeframe 🙁 If the issue is because of the missile watching system and TAF they can all be disabled in the mission editor, just like you can enforce long INS alignement and gyro drift
there may be a reason that I don't know about since I don't play DCS but I'm surprised you didn't put the A-4 in for the Nato half considering that I believe its free for everyone it might make a good entry attack jet. then again there could be things idk about just curious.
That's a great collection for the server and glad you are limiting it to 2nd and 3rd generation (no 4th gens). Would you consider adding the SU25T? I don't think it would be out of place.
It is a slippery slope because when we add something that is technically not in the era then it becomes "If that is okay, then why is X not okay." Right now it is just easier to confine it to a certain time frame with strict fences around it. We will see what happens as we flesh out the idea more
Enigma, I flew cold war exclusively from about 2017 to a few months ago (predominantly the 21, but as late as the 2KC). I have been getting into the Harrier and F-16C recently. I see for sure the 16C has no place on the cold war server- But I was wondering, with the TGP removed, if the Harrier does not belong? The avionics are newer than the famous RN and AF harriers of the Falklands, and the missiles as well, but when it comes to the Avionics, the nav system is not that much more useful than the Mirage 2K, and across the board the Harrier does not match the 2k. What is the harm of allowing Harriers? I have only flown RedFor (19,21) on your campaign server, but I would guess Tpods and 9Ms are banned on the blufor side? I would really enjoy flying the server with the Harrier packing snake-eyes and mavericks. I know it sounds impossible, but I am burnt out of the older stuff after these few years, having gone through all the WW2, to early, to late cold war phases, and have done all the wacky crap (as far as purposefully taking the MiG-19 up against F-15s on some servers). I am in a phase where I am getting heavily into strike/CAS, but the A-10C is too late and slow for me, and the A-10A is not clickable (this is a big deal for me). The harrier provides a survivable (good power, maneuverable) strike platform, with the cool ARBS, iron bombs, IR mavericks, and a clickable cockpit. What is your take on it? Forgot to mention, have some time with the Viggen- not a fan of its cockpit layout. I suppose the Viggen fits much what I have described, but I am moreso pointing out that the harrier (sans TGP and 9M) does not really pack more of a modern featureset than the Mirage 2000 (and lacks radar, datalink etc), and does not really come close to the A-10C. Aside from Navigation, not sure what it really has on the A-10A, and therefore why is excluded? Not related, but I'm not the only one who would kill for a full fidelity MiG-29 9.12 or SU-25A, and I hear a full fidelity 29 is planned.
Cold War is such a big era, but I think it's probably right that the AV 8B is excluded, if only for the avionics. It is sorely lacking a harrier of some kind, AV 8A, Gr3, or Sea Harrier would be perfect era fit.
No Harrier, tho? What version do we have in DCS? And really looking forward to playing on the server (CW is the 'golden age' of jets imo), might have to practice with the Viggen a bit before I do, all my recent flight time has been in the Tomcat and Jeff :)
Just bought mig21 and viggen with the sales just to be able to fly in a cold war pvp server, other pvp server are fun but everyone from both teams is flying f16...
I have the F-86, mig-21, and the Viggen. I love all three, but having equal interest in the Viggen and 21, is it pretty easy to play red one day and blue the next? Also, my understanding is it is a pain to include mods here where everyone has to have them for it to work, but it would be cool to see the A-4E. That is a cool plane. Paid module quality. People should definitely check it out.
Yes, you can switch as often as you want. I do not believe in side locking. As for the A-4, yes it is a pain to add mods on the server and we evaluated it but decided against it which is a shame but it's just the reality we live in with not being professionals and hobbyist with limited time.
The server now has the F-14. History, while interesting, has the benefit of being able to have everything. In DCS we have major gaps in what is covered. It would be very easy to just allow what was around then but it would completely upset the balance of the server. We simply do not have some aircraft that existed then in the game. SO for that reason, we have to pick and choose what we allow and in what quantity to have a good balance.

I would not recommend it for a new player. It is not easy to use and you are flying at a huge disadvantage.

The DCS Autumn Sale 2021 is live TODAY. So make sure to pick up some cold war planes. For helicopters, I would recommend the Hind, MI-8 and Huey.

It is very strong if people do A2G with it. The depot targets are fixed and have markers so it is very easy to do strikes on them.

It's not an official module so it adds workload on our team to add sadly.
What, no helos? I mean, the Mi-24P is basically Redfor's full-fidelity ground attack plane. :D

No Harrier, tho? What version do we have in DCS? And really looking forward to playing on the server (CW is the 'golden age' of jets imo), might have to practice with the Viggen a bit before I do, all my recent flight time has been in the Tomcat and Jeff :)

Just bought mig21 and viggen with the sales just to be able to fly in a cold war pvp server, other pvp server are fun but everyone from both teams is flying f16...

I just bought the F5 to fly in this server, I really wanted to fly with the A4 and the F5 is the closest that I can get
I have the F-86, mig-21, and the Viggen. I love all three, but having equal interest in the Viggen and 21, is it pretty easy to play red one day and blue the next?
Also, my understanding is it is a pain to include mods here where everyone has to have them for it to work, but it would be cool to see the A-4E. That is a cool plane. Paid module quality. People should definitely check it out.
Yes, you can switch as often as you want. I do not believe in side locking. As for the A-4, yes it is a pain to add mods on the server and we evaluated it but decided against it which is a shame but it's just the reality we live in with not being professionals and hobbyist with limited time.

A Cold War environment that doesn't have the F-14, a plane that first flew in 1970 and entered the Fleet Arm in 1974?
The server now has the F-14. History, while interesting, has the benefit of being able to have everything. In DCS we have major gaps in what is covered. It would be very easy to just allow what was around then but it would completely upset the balance of the server. We simply do not have some aircraft that existed then in the game. SO for that reason, we have to pick and choose what we allow and in what quantity to have a good balance.
@@Enigma89 is the F1CE in? I wouldn't expect it to be particularly imbalanced.

At this time no but maybe down the road if we can get support from that mod team.
@@Enigma89 I looked on their discord page and they have instructions for its use on multiplayer servers, so that none users can still use the server.

To act as a heads up that they are in the server and it is possible to fly them. I left that part short as I had little to say about them.
