Entirely unrelated, I am sorry. I am new to DCS and also your server (which is amazing, by the way). I got into my very first dogfight with a Viggen (I was a MiG-21) and we went low altitude. He seemed to be doing a very poor job of evading, but he was heading into the sun so I missed two R-60 shots and went guns. I nicked his wing a couple times, nothing serious, and then I exploded. It said I had a teamkill, but I had done an IFF check before engaging and I had gotten within 100m as he was trying to overshoot. Somebody said I probably flew over a roadbase which has an insta-kill radius (a thing I knew previously). Ever since then I have noticed players dragging tails over roadbases, is this the new meta? Is there some other way we can punish roadbase campers? My IL2 Squad has been playing on your server for a bit, and I've heard about it from both your vids, as well as the community. With the sale, I decided to pick up the F-5 and Syria, fully with plans to get on your server once I get a few hours under my belt in the tiger. Definitely my favorite jet to fly in the server. Handles nicely, as you mentioned the ability to uncage the seeker is awesome, and it's very quick as well. Heading into battle with a slick jet and only 2 sidewinders really makes it more fun, as you are forced to be smart with your engagements.
Totally agree. I'm sick of all the "Get the F-18, Get the Hornet" crowd. When I first got into DCS and went on a couple of groups and forums seeking some suggestions and advice on what might be a good module to get into to learn the basics, I was constantly being told "to make sure" I get the F-18...get the hornet because it's ..blah blah blah. Inexplicably, even most big streamers do this! I let the pressure get to me and bought it. Tried it a few times, couldn't get to grips with some systems and not a big fan of BVR so I gave up. I almost gave up on DCS all together, but decided to give it another shot. I bought the F5 and loved it. Since then I've bought several more modules, incl a helo and have enjoyed them all, but still cannot get into the F-18 and so have uninstalled it.. again. Each to their own.
That actually pushed me away from DCs when I bounced off the menu complexity of the F18. Ended up giving DCs another crack after treating myself to the JF-17 and love it.
I really like this module, but it's definitely not up to the standards of a new module. I could list a few reasons why but I'd rather focus on positives. I do love the gun sight and the aim 9p is a relatively good missle. Also, the f 5 is no underdog when it comes to low altitude head2head merge on ECW. She's also a damn fine looking aircraft
I find it is crucial with the F5 to Know when to raise the flaps in the up position or to use them and fixed or auto mode. I find an auto mode I am able to bleed a lot of energy if I am not careful. I usually just keep them in the up position during dog fighting. But lately I have been experimenting with using them in auto mode when I'm trying to use my excess energy for nose Authority but when I'm done I always put them back to the up position.
Aside from the m2000c the only other plane I can recommend to new players is the f-5 both planes have a sensible cockpit layout that is easy to understand. Unlike the m2000c however the f-5 control layout and skill bar is substantially lighter. The m2000c is easy to fly but hard to master while the f-5 is just simple.
Incredible video and excellent flying, thanks so much for making this and showcasing the beautiful Tiger!!!!!!! Can't wait to dive into this aircraft and enjoy it also :D

@@Enigma89 I saw that, awesome guide and still has me leaning towards the F-5. Whatever it ends up being, it will be my first Hi-Fi module so I definitely want to do some research. You’re a god send though Enigma!
I like that complaint of "this cheap cold war jet doesn't have a perfectly functional radar gunsight' so don't use it like a sniper scope, use it's guns like a warbird with a bit of assist
Yeah, it doesn't give a good solution in a constant rate level turn, which it's supposed to by its design. It's not that we expect a gen 5 gun solution. It's bugged.
The best thing about the dcs community is how they will all decide a plane they have never touched in real life is horribly modeled and is super bad/unrealistic
Great video! I started with the F5 and playing the Mig 21 recently has really made me appreciate the things the F5 does well, not that the 21 is bad or anything. Reddit really does hate this plane for some reason. Just have to wait for reddit to start hating modern MFD jets and we'll get the Enigma "Hey the F16 is actually a ton of fun" video.
Don't think that day will come, I really do not find the modern stuff fun. IF I had to pick any modern plane to fly it would be the Harrier because it has VTOL so it is kind of quirky. :)
People complain about how the F-5 is "abandoned" but there's a silver lining to it. The FM isn't going to change on you and force you to relearn everything overnight.
It is a good point. I learned my lesson with the harrier to not invest a lot of time into a module that is super active in development due to the negative training and having to remap keys
People keep talking about the F5 bugs but I fly it ALL the time and the bugs just always seem so nit picky. It is a joy to fly even if the engines feel a bit underpowered.
I've played around with FC3 aircraft and the F-16, but the F-5 is the first module I'm really studying. It's super easy to learn and fly, the cockpit is simple, the weapons are capable enough for a little taste of everything. And it's no wonder, having been designed to be sold to countries that couldn't afford air superiority fighters or train their pilots.
I got the F5 as first high fidelity because it's the closest thing to the Talon trainer used in the US. Literally just a single seat version. Would be cool to have the Talon and other missing trainers in the game, I feel it would give new players a good sense of starting point and sense of direction and progression.
great video. This video shows exactly why I never engage in dogfights against F-5's in the mig-21 and why I love dogfighting mig-21's when flying the F-5
I notice a few issues with the F5 currently: 1) cannot get it to go supersonic, even in clean config. 2) The nose wheel steering is ridiculously sensitive 3) the wobble on ground makes its wings twist
@Enigma89 I know this video is a year old, but what do you mean with the gunsight mode? I am new to DCS and just picked up the F5 module in the current sale.
very good, thanks for the video, in the f5 and tigers the sound of 7 beeps or the flashing of the circle when missiles are fired at us does not work in the RWR! Do you know how to fix it? Would you take a look? thanks crack!!
Its a great and competitive plane for cold war. F5E and Mig21 both super fun for the server. Viggen is cool also, competitive in AtoA but more ground pounder. Mirage F1 we cant try so its a pass for now. Sabre and Mig19 are for pros as they lack useful radars and missiles are poor...
Any advice on spotting aircraft on the CW server? I find it really difficult to spot where enemy aircraft are coming from even with overlord tripwire set, and merge notifications
It's fun for sure. But ED needs to update it. At lest finish the cockpit, and review the flight model. Although I think the FM is pretty good. Other then that she's a great little cold war jet. Like the Mig-21 her time is coming. There are so many cold war jets on the horizon.
All the "radar gun solution is not correct" people must be flying a different F-5 than I have been. Or that Tricker has been. Or that anyone else who bothers to learn and understand the jet has been. Hoggit being Hoggit again!
I like the F-5, but it does have serious quality issues compared to the DCS standard. The cockpit is very dated, and the front glass looks so dirty, it's almost unusable in VR. RWR is bugged. Wing snapping is bugged. People say the gun solution is not accurate in a constant rate level turn (I've not verified it yet myself completely, but something is off). These are all things you experience frequently, not obscure systems or nitpicks. Now that the F-4 is coming out and will likely be the premier Western Cold War fighter, there might be less reasons to fly the F-5 until they do some work on it.
@@Enigma89 Meh, I get what you mean. But no other airframe that I've flown, excluding maybe some FC3 stuff, has such noticeable issues that matter in every flight. Devs please fix. I think people are crying about F-5 for good reason.
I have the F5 and the F86.... bought them years ago......but I rarely fly them because the Enigma Cold War server is so damn buggy and mostly crashes on picking a side and a unit and slot these days. I wasted hours of my life trying to get on.

The F-5 with even having less missiles is on par or surpasses the MiG-21 in terms of a2a k/d performance on the server. The missiles are just that good.
I've been carrying 2 missiles on the MiG-21 because I can't find anything despite Overlord and a 27" 1080p monitor, so my limiting factor is fuel and I usually RTB having not fired a thing
tbh any fight in DCS ends up getting shot by the last guy coming in the duel, while you were 1v1ing someone else. Wow omega skills. That's why i swapped to duel servers.
Judging the situation, the entire situation, and not just the 1vs1 forces you to juggle a lot more things in your head. If you know someone else is barreling into your fight in the next 30 seconds, then you may not be able to afford a mistake when cashing in your chips to make a shot that will leave your energy-less. I actually do not do much 1vs1s anymore because the environments are very sterile, controlled and dimensionless. There are just a lot less variables to work with and juggle.
@@Enigma89 hey i was wondering since i dont have a flight stick is it possible to still play this game with mouse and keyboard and get to a decent skill level?

Kinda fun plane but very empty and featureless for the price. I mean. It’s the same price as the viggen and mirage 2000 and has like less than 1/3 of the features or detail in modeling. It’s a sale only and even the hurts to buy kind of module. Now you need it if you want to play blue Cold War, but it just kinda sucks that it has a sliver of what even the free A4 has to offer but the price of a real full blown 60+$ module. Even if it had no bugs. Still feels over priced to me. It’s just so bland, and lifeless.
@@Blake-jl8lh the module? Not much. The plane? CCIP, INS navigation, aerial refueling etc. It’s not the modules fault it just feels like the plane itself doesn’t bring enough to warrant the price tag.

the F-5 is still around. No longer front line but as a backup fighter.
You forgot that you can pretend it's an F-20 and do Area 88 scenarios.
Any advice on spotting aircraft on the CW server? I find it really difficult to spot where enemy aircraft are coming from even with overlord tripwire set, and merge notifications
Human GCI
That’s honestly normal.
Look for the dot, respect the difficulty of spotting against ground clutter, call awacs early
reddit users cant do much more than take screenshots so they cope by saying the module is bad instead of actually learning how to play the game
exactly , F5 is pretty deadly in good hands
It's fun for sure. But ED needs to update it. At lest finish the cockpit, and review the flight model. Although I think the FM is pretty good. Other then that she's a great little cold war jet. Like the Mig-21 her time is coming. There are so many cold war jets on the horizon.
All the "radar gun solution is not correct" people must be flying a different F-5 than I have been. Or that Tricker has been. Or that anyone else who bothers to learn and understand the jet has been. Hoggit being Hoggit again!
Please sir have my upvote
Currently this is the only module I own
I like the F-5, but it does have serious quality issues compared to the DCS standard.
DCD has no standard
@@Enigma89 Meh, I get what you mean. But no other airframe that I've flown, excluding maybe some FC3 stuff, has such noticeable issues that matter in every flight. Devs please fix. I think people are crying about F-5 for good reason.
Is there also mig21 vid?
I have a ton of MiG-21 videos, it is what I mostly fly. Just check out some of my older videos.
Never had an issue with the F5
I have the F5 and the F86.... bought them years ago......but I rarely fly them because the Enigma Cold War server is so damn buggy and mostly crashes on picking a side and a unit and slot these days. I wasted hours of my life trying to get on.
In the interview Fast Jet Performance did with Simon Pearson & Ben Whitely from ED in June this year they commented that an updated/new F-5 is coming - with option for current F-5 owners to upgrade most likely. ua-cam.com/video/9JJ4h1BQhfg/v-deo.html , linked to relevant time stamp in video.
This was my first module. So, clearly I am not cultured and informed enough to hate on it.
Oh well...
Allow the F-5 to carry four Sidewinders and it would be on par with the Mig-21. Change my mind…
The F-5 with even having less missiles is on par or surpasses the MiG-21 in terms of a2a k/d performance on the server. The missiles are just that good.
@@Enigma89 You can't fire what you don't have!
I've been carrying 2 missiles on the MiG-21 because I can't find anything despite Overlord and a 27" 1080p monitor, so my limiting factor is fuel and I usually RTB having not fired a thing
The comment that the Viggen has less bugs....
Omg, you killed cookie
tbh any fight in DCS ends up getting shot by the last guy coming in the duel, while you were 1v1ing someone else.
There are just a lot less variables to work with and juggle.
how do i play this game?
www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/beta/ Here you go!
@@Enigma89 thank you!
@@Enigma89 hey i was wondering since i dont have a flight stick is it possible to still play this game with mouse and keyboard and get to a decent skill level?
@@obsolete9734 you can use keyboard and/or mouse but I dont really recomend it. You can get some cheap joystics used or new. The saitek x56 is a good beginner stick. And I would also advise you to get some headtracking.
@@obsolete9734 Some people also have decent results with xbox controllers
My daily flyer is the f5 😂
It's a module that grows on you for sure. I still hate the guns, but enjoy flying it overall.
Air quake.
What is it missing?
@@Blake-jl8lh the module? Not much. The plane? CCIP, INS navigation, aerial refueling etc.
It’s not the modules fault it just feels like the plane itself doesn’t bring enough to warrant the price tag.
I do enjoy flying it, but I delayed buying it for a long time for the reasons I listed above. And I have a hard time recommending to others unless it’s heavily on sale.
Wish it was just like… 25-30$
I love doing adversary dogfighting friends who are learning the game (like f5 vs f18). Evens the playing field and makes it a challenge for both.
@@jeffreyleftovers it's only 10 more dollars than the f86?
@@Blake-jl8lh F5 isn’t the only plane who’s price tag doesn’t match the content.
What the hell are people talking about? I harass newbie just picking up DCS, until the master the F-5 and/or Mig21. Before they start buying up all the other modules and complaining about the game.
normally a mig-21 user but ill install the F-5 now and give it a try
