      Based on everything I have seen from you and others, I would go with the Z6. It is the video that has impressed me. I'm not exactly in the market for a new camera yet though, but I enjoy your tests. Will you be doing a strict low light comparison between the two cameras?

      Both (sorry). I own both and consider them completely different cameras -- the D850 satisfies my very demanding birding needs, and my Z7 is better for pretty well everything else. I love what the Z7 is doing for my MF glass.

      Z6 over the Z7, but Z7 over the D850. Why? EVF and my favorite and most-used lenses are manual focus.
      That's about it.

      @@lokeshsiddalingaiah That depends. The tracking af is unusable, so if you want to be filming moving subjects with autofocus, you won't be able to use the D850 for that. BUT the 4k image quality is great and af is ok for fairly static subjects. So if you shoot static scenes or use manual focus, the D850 is great for filming.

    Once I tried Z7, and Z6, I sold my a7r2 immediately... no matter how better people say sony is, but after 6 months of use, I still can not feel right about it. Nikon build is a loooot better, the jpg picture looks a lot pleasing at least in my experience.

    I’m selling off all my Nikon gear (D850 included) as a travel and landscape/cityscape photographer the Z is a no brainer, superb image quality that the 850 has, same weather resistance, but in a smaller package.
    Don’t get me wrong, the D850 is a superb camera, but the Z appeals to me more.
    At the end of the day some people like one thing others don’t,
    For those still trying to decide, the best thing to do is actually go into a store and try it yourself, I was so set on the ar7III until I felt it in my hands (no offence Sony) the Nikon z just feels right in your hand.

    I have a D750 and just got a Z6. And I use it mostly for still photographs. So, besides for the sensor resolution the comparison is fairly similar. My initial impression is that I may prefer carrying around the Z6. It's the 1st mirrorless camera that seems to work for me (I tried a couple Fujis). Ergonomically it reminds me of my old Canon F1 35mm. Top things I like are 1. Display is awesome 2. Size makes it feasible to carry almost anywhere. The Z 24-70 lens gives it just the right amount of heft. 3. And not having a mirror makes this a lean and functional shooting machine. The slick and cool factor is very high. I like the autofocus performance of the D750 and I've grown accustomed to picking up a chunky camera. 4. I like that I can fly under the radar too. People seem to mind less when I'm carrying the Z6 vs the D750. It's much more subtle. Won't I don't like too much about it is 1. Autofocus is less snappy and feels under powered with my 18-35 lens (which I think is a great match because of its weight even despite the adapter's size which doesn't seem to bug me very much) 2. Looking through the viewfinder you don't get that clear image that you get that's on the display. 3. I've programmed it for back focus and AE-lock with the F1 key which is takes a little coordination to reach. In conclusion I'm edging with the Z6. It's going to change how I take pictures too. Using the display more which has been an obstacle in the past since I'm an old timer and still affectionately remember my 35mm days. I can see how some photographers still like to strap up like they're going on a scuba dive. But frankly I think that it's all about being able to take great pictures, using the latest technology, in a discrete and comfortable way. At some point the mirror is going to have to go. It's technically flawed and archaic to have those mechanics. I'm keeping my D750 and may carry it along as a backup on a shoot. But for me it's all about the Z6 now. Finally time to make the switch. Upgrades will be coming out fast to make up for all the technical short comings. I don't know who said this, maybe you Matt. Seems like Nikon intentionally released this camera with some intentional short comings for the time being because they knew that they can temporarily be overcome. I also think that you pegged it with your other review where you tested the autofocus with other lenses. All in all the z6 (or z7) for a still photographer takes great pictures for day to day shots. Despite that, the DSLR is still here to stay for some specialize Photographers in my opinion. But for me I'm going with the z6 for now and the D750 for any special needs or backup.

    I own a Z7 and couldn't be happier. The thing that stands out the most to me is the placement of the iso button. Shooting manual, looking through the evf, I can adjust the aperture, shutter and iso with my thumb, forefinger and middle finger while looking at my preferred exposure as I'm capturing it. The touch screen info system is also great but I usually have it shut off until I need it because my nose hits the screen. Now, when I pick up my D750, it feels as low tech as my film cameras compared to the Z7. One major issue is that I have shot 3 weddings since acquiring the Z but I still shot all the really important things, like the ceremony, primarily with the D750 because of the dual card slots and having the fear of losing images..

  • @matthewwells1606

    My takeaway from video reviews, Thom Hogan's excellent Z7 review, and seeing Z7/Z6 pictures posted online, is that I'll be sticking with my Nikon DSLRs, specifically my humble D750, at least for now. I don't do video and I don't want to do video, plain and simple. Maybe in the future I'll get the Z6ii. I'm also self aware enough to know that my camera isn't what's holding me back from being a better photographer... :)

    All depends what you want to shoot. For me, as I am into Wildlife mostly, the Nikon D850 is the choice. Especially as there are tons of native long telephoto lenses available (e.g. the exquisite Nikkor 600mm 4.0 FL). For years to come, no mirrorless - does not matter which brand - will reach the level of that you can get with a DSLR. Nikon better does not forget their main customer base, the Z5 and Z7 are just for a very small number of people.

  • @scriptosaurusrex
    @scriptosaurusrex 5 років тому +1

    Honestly I am not attracted to mirrorless.
    It's cool and the right choice for many - but as kong as there is still any lag whatsoever in evfs it is not going to happen. I hate them enough already without feeling out of sync with time as well.
    They make me feel quite disconnected to my subject.
    Enjoyed the video Matt!

    Good video. Normally I should have stopped at the D810 (my limit is the 30x20 prints). But GAS propelled me to a boatload of Zeiss lenses (Otus included) and I returned the Z7 to get a second D850. I change lenses often, don't need the dust of mirrorless. Covered for 10 years. I know the next camera will be better. The next refrigerator will also be better than the one I have. Won't spend my life upgrading appliances.

    Maybe you don’t have this problem but another advantage of the Z cameras is that any lenses you struggle to get consistent accurate auto focus with, especially the zooms, they are actually much more accurate than on the d850, for me at least. I have the newest 24-70 lens and it’s reliably back focusing past 40 or 50 mm, there’s no one AF fine-tune that works for the whole range. Now it has a new lease on life on my Z6.

    Have a D850 since their release...just got Z7 a few weeks ago...You are 100% spot on...not dropping my D850...but since I do landscape mostly , and some wildlife, the Z7 is going in my kit bag with the D500 (for reach)... Hopefully next up is a Z8 which will be a bit beefer, two card slots and faster auto focus and buffering...then I can switch out my D5. Great Review

    D850 all the way, especially if you got lenses calibrated professionally to the body. I never thought i could get a sharper image than my D850, well get it professionally calibrated to see the difference. Z6 video, Z7 bit of both while moaning about AF being fixed in future firmware(images), whatever you decide, just shoot and be happy. Far to much crap about gear when its about using it and enjoying it. Ps. D850 with grip and 9fps, i can't prove it but the AF sure feels faster with that extra juice in the body.

    A big difference is the mount. What if you want to future-proof your purchase? It depends on Nikon's strategy going forward, but if all the new lenses are going to be for the Z mount, that suggests going with the Z series. If Nikon proposes to keep bringing out lenses for both mounts, then it doesn't matter. But my guess would be that the old mount is going to get left behind.

      @Love made in Japan you say because of physics - but it is precisely because of physics that it gets big. to get a fast aperture lens you need it to be bigger. fstop is measured by taking diameter and dividing by focal length of the lens. so it is physically impossible to make smaller but fast lenses like 0.95.

    • @richardjacobson5236
      @richardjacobson5236 5 років тому

      also, sometimes the light gathering is more important than dark corners - e.g. concert photography where you are using centre not the edges.

      @richardjacobson5236 5 років тому

      @Love made in Japan it was an example - not everyone buys fast lenses for bokeh. i know a couple of event photographers who spent thousands on 1.4 lenses so they can shoot in low light events like circus performances etc. if there is no demand for expensive, fast lenses, manufacturers wouldn't make and sell them.

    I think for a new buyer that really needs to buy now, its better to buy the D850 and native glass and consider Sony if you really want to go mirrorless and want video features. I think the EOS R and Z6/Z7 are really nice cameras but they still feel like they are in beta testing stage. It really only makes sense to buy one to compliment an existing Canon/Nikon setup because the lens lineup for the new mirrorless systems have a long way to mature. If you can, stick with what you have and wait for Nikon and Canon to go all in with the Mark II versions.

    A very detailed review indeed. Even though I came across this video quite late. I was saving up to buy the ultimate D850 for the last many years. The Z6II is quite tempting considering all the convenience and the technologies put into it. I do landscapes and occasionally portraits, don't do video at all. Considering my type of photography is it a good decision to buy a D850 in 2021 or should I migrate to the mirrorless territory.

    I just made this decision, after trying out both cameras. I chose the D850. First and foremost the size. The Z7 is too small for me to hold and adjust comfortably. I don’t have small hands. Smaller is not better. There is only 1 card slot on the Z7. Is this a consumer grade camera? Focus tracking is better on the D850. Backlit buttons. 2 card slots. No clunky adapter. Functional grip. Better battery life. Way Faster FPS. Hands down (large hands) the D850 is far superior.

    I went with the Z7 rather than the D850 as I was coming from a big old heavy D810 with battery pack, and I was tired of lugging around all that weight. The smaller, lighter Z7 was MUCH easier to carry around for me than the D850 would have been, even when shooting with a lens requiring the lens adapter. Plus I really love the Z series 14-30mm lens for my real estate work, typically from five to 14 or so a week. For me, the Z7 with that "real estate" wide angle lens on it produces amazing images and my clients love them. Do I miss the second card slot? Sure do, but I always carry a spare card in my camera bag, so no biggie. Would I like it to autofocus better/faster in low light? Sure would. It's lousy at it, but I accept it for what it is and overlook this quirk in order to get the wonderful electronic viewfinder, upon which I can review photos in BRIGHT SUNLIGHT without having to try to see what I just shot by reviewing them on the rear display screen. All in all, I love the Z7 and would make the same decision again in spite of the Z7's shortcomings....

    Thank you, Matt. That was a good, balanced comparison. I appreciate your candor and experience. I also shoot with both the D850 and Z7 (and Z6) and find that for my landscape photography, I enjoy using the Z7 more. For video, I too would use the Z6 or Z7 and my Atomos Ninja V, over the D850. However, for a wedding, or high-speed sports, I'd grab the D850 (mainly for the dual cards and more mature autofocus). Its good that we now have choices in the Nikon world.

    Needed to see this comparison because I am cooling on the Z7 and warming back to the D850. The single card slot on the Z7 may turn out to be the deal breaker, simply because on my future overseas trips, I do not want to carry a laptop BUT I still want the security of back-up of the photos.
    If the D850 will back-up the photos on the second card, I can post the back-up cards back home. This would be a disaster-resistant solution.

    Doesn't the Z6 have better video (oversampling for 4K instead of pixel binning)? This matters if talking about "mainly for video use case".

      @Poli-IX 5 років тому

      yep, I think the Z6 is better than Z7.

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 5 років тому +2

      The Z6 has a few advantages over the Z7 for the videographer. The Z6 uses full sensor readout to record in 6k, and then downsamples to 4k in camera. The Z7 uses line skipping to only use about half the sensors lines, and then presumably also records in 6k with a downsample to 4k. You miss out on a lot of information with line skipping. Also, the Z6 has a much more favorable pixel pitch for low light gathering. This might be an even bigger advantage than the full sensor readout vs line skipping aspect. Its probably not a whole stop better. More likely its 1/3 to 1/2 a stop better low light than the Z7. But that extra 1/3 or 1/2 stop affords you some good things in the video world, especially with less than the very best lenses. An F3.5 lens is suddenly "like" an F2.8 lens, and so on.

    IMO they're both good cameras, but the D850 does edge out the Z7 in auto focus tracking speed IMO. The other plus side to the D850 versus the gen 1 Z7 is the dual card slots too, which I know was a dealer breaker for some people when the Z7 came out (mostly professionals I think). But the Z7 II addressed that and a few other things. But if i had to choose, I'd probably still grab the D850 if you want a good performaer all-around that's ready for anything. The Z7 does make a great travel, landscape and portrait camera though.

  • @oldgrumpyjim5003

    D850 as its a pro body, Z series is not (according to Nikon it was never aimed at the pro market). Also its just not worth the price for an entry level mirrorless. For an extra £800 you could go Fuji Medium format and that shows you how daft it has become! I would wait till next year apparently there's more to come from Nikon on the mirrorless front although god knows at what price point! Great review Matt but can't help but feel that the D850 for pro use is the safer option for obvious reasons most of them you point out.

      The only cameras made in Sendai are the D5 and Z cameras, theD850 is made in Thailand. A lot of working pros disagree with you. It definitely has a pro solid build, best build and weather sealing of any other current FF mirrorless on the market.
      Any camera that matches the D850 in image quality is not an "entry level camera".

    • @oldgrumpyjim5003
      @oldgrumpyjim5003 5 років тому

      @@stanspb763 I don't disagree with you on that, but I'm just quoting what Nikon stated at photokina this year. It was never meant for the pro market (if you believe them) I'll bet a lot of working pros are regretting it and jumped too soon. Personally I feel they messed it up with the spec! and it is simply not worth the money.
      A lot of the working pros I come into contact with are questioning the validity of the full frame market and feel that it has now reached the point of over priced mass produced technology that you maybe could get away with 10 years ago. Many feel that Medium Format is the way ahead and imho fuji has highlighted the real costs of manufacturing with their aps-c range. Nikon Canon & Sony might have to rethink their pricing on FF in the future. imho :-)

I think having both is the best solution for me and staying in one eco system is far superior to straddling between Nikon and Sony. ProRes footage on the Ninja V is really nice and even in STD picture control and 8 bit, I find it superior to the in-camera H.264.

      Mark Shirley I’ve been shooting Nikon since the film days (over 40 years), so I’m biased and more comfortable with a Nikon. However, the video I shot with the Sony was superb. I think for anyone with a large investment in glass, they now can stick with bodies that use those lenses with very nice results. For somebody just starting out, I would recommend renting gear for a month at a time to really see what works best for them, especially since Sony has stepped up their game with high quality lenses.

      Mark Shirley If you set up your video settings and save them to one of the custom settings (Register Custom Shoot Menu on a9, a7RIII and a7III only, I think), you can switch back and forth fairly easily including focusing mode, drive settings, etc. Otherwise, you have to adjust your settings individually through the menus.
