I can tell you exactly what that is for a material. It is sapphire! It is a very common material for use as cutting edges, helicopter windows, etc. It is used for all kinds of things.
I am not very sure. And they are so nice to work with that I do not want to risk damaging them to find out. Even Jim Linnell was not too sure about their origin.
