Perhaps in the 80s or earlier things were like that, but I have lived there for a large chunk of my life and I can categorically say I have never heard of that before, but it is a well recycled rumour that seems to exist about a number of Welsh towns. Tourism is important to the area, it's really not in Wales' best interest to put off tourists by refusing to speak English. A good deal of people in North Wales are, like me, first language English speakers/Welsh born but English heritage. It's not a foreign language if it's the language of the region, it's a local language spoken by locals. It may come as a surprise but there are some Welsh people in some areas who don't speak English as a first language and who at school got low grades for English, just as an English kid might for French.
The surgeon also had the world record for being able to perform an amputation very quickly.

Bethesda is another of those places where (allegedly) the locals insist on speaking a foreign language just to pss off English tourists!

We INSIST on speaking Welsh because we are Welsh. Tourists aren't around all year, every year. It's people like yourself that causes trouble.
