Virgin Girl Fruit: Weird Fruits of China: 姑娘果 (Calyx seu Fructus Physalis) 锦灯笼

Girl Fruit (姑娘果) is a fruit from China that is often associated to mean virgin girl fruit. It has a leafy covering that surrounds the main fruit. The inside tastes sweet, sort of like a cross between apple and pear. It is a tiny fruit and the very weird leafy covering acts sort of like a mosquito net to keep out invading insects when the fruit has not ripened yet. Scientific name is Calyx seu Fructose Physalis and is more commonly referred in China as 锦灯笼.

These grow in my garden in South Africa. We call them gooseberries.
