    I honestly just watched this whole video because it was refreshing to see someone just make the guitar look how they wanted it to look for a couple of bucks. Too many people would go out and buy a $100 neck just to match the color of the body. Props to your diy job dude!

    our modern protective wood finishes don't break down as easily as the old lacquers and varnishes. it's harder to get that broken in look just from daily use. good job making it look the way you wanted.

    • @edgeofeternity101
      @edgeofeternity101 4 роки тому +2

      They use those finishes because they are quickest to apply in the production process. Some end up ridiculously thick, and I also hate those mirror gloss finishes. I have one older Korean built LP Jr type with a very thin coat of poly, and it is actually starting to age very nice, showing wood grain and looking a lot like nitro, I sometimes wonder if it is nitro. Probably not cause it's a very early Agile of the cease and desist variety.

    I don't really understand this comment section. People are mad because he has a different opinion? Really? People are actually mad because he prefered the worn look, and some people like the gloss it comes with? That's like someone having a red car, painting it blue, and then everyone yelling at him because he 'ruined the car' because 'red is better'.

    • @PsychologyWorksOfficial
      @PsychologyWorksOfficial 4 роки тому +3

      A better analogy would be a guy getting a brand new shiny red car and then walking around and banging it up with a hammer and putting scratches down the side.

    • @MikeAndersonvinyloldies
      @MikeAndersonvinyloldies 4 роки тому +5

      @@PsychologyWorksOfficial not really. Will the paint on the car affect how it drives? I know that I’m looking to do this on a project guitar. I hate gloss finishes because they are so sticky. So I’m buying a cheap LP Jr (not a Gibson). Then I’m gonna wear down the gloss finish and replace with a quality pickup, and some quality electronics and tuners.

    800 grit sandpaper on a homeade sanding block with a little give is the best way in my opinion. I use 0000 steel wool on my frets after a level/crowning or to clean them up about once every year or two. But, I wouldn't recommend it for a job like this. It's messy as I'm sure anyone knows who has used it and less consistent. Not to mention its not something you wanna have stuck to your pups, with sandpaper i just mask off the pups and take it off once the guitar has been sanded and whiped down. That's why I recommend the 800 grit sandpaper. It's just course enough that it won't take forever but fine enough you won't do damage if your paying even a little attention to how much laquer your taking off.

    I like to do that too, but I also do the shiny chrome bits, take them all apart and put them in a glass chamber with hydrochloric acid, make sure the acid does not touch the parts, the fumes make it all dull and antiquated, keep a keen eye on the parts, some get affected more that others, some parts need to come out of the chamber before others

    Don't breathe the dust.
    Wet sanding, or even using buffing compound which creates a slurry, keeps down the dust while also creating a more even finish removal.It isn't pretty, but you can still use steel wool, - wearing surgical gloves is the way to go.
    Once you thin the poly, it's possible to create cracks on raised edges by applying fairly blunt (but necessarily forceful ) pressure .Heavy steel pipes or hard woods work great for this.Once you get rid of most of the poly, it should be possible to buff out all the tiny scratches, and achieve a more moderate sheen.
    This can be done well, - it just requires more patience and fortitude than most have on tap.

      A pack of steel wool is pretty cheap, like four + bucks at home depot. I am not sure which one I used exactly, it was either a medium #2 or a lighter grade #00. I would buy both and test them. If you take the neck off the guitar, or remove the pickguard you can test an area behind the neck plate or guard with both grades and see which is more appealing to you.
      The lighter grade will mean more elbow grease.. you could also use the number two to start with and then finish it with the zero grade.

    On my Tele maple neck I used brown shoe polish... just reapply more coats depending on how dark you want it. It really does a great job and is easy to do! If you really want the relic look, use some 1000 grit sandpaper in strategic places on the neck to show wear, then rub in a bit of the brown shoe polish... does a great job!

    Doing this now with a cheapo Cozart tele my buddy gave me.
    Only problem is it has a zebra wood top and I want to get the glossy finish off without losing that top.
    So far all I have this this weird glue-y matte finish from when me and him did it with all the hardware and everything on just cause we were curious I guess. I might stop there, I might not, idk yet. Doing the back now just to see how this finish really is

    I think this only apply to wood-type of coating. If you do this to the guitar with color on it. It will be pretty messy

    I'm thinking of doing the same with my Fiesta red Mustang, but I'm a bit worried about it getting lots of ugly scratch marks from the steel wool?
    It's hard to see in the video but was that an issue for you, or do you have any tips on how one can do this without getting into those kind of troubles?

    I love my PRS SE guitars but the ploy gloss finish looks fake and toyish. I've been thinking about doing this too. The other guitars in the the same or lower price range that have a satin finish look better to me. My thoughts are if I could make the poly finish satin it'll look more like a high end guitar than the toys they look like now.
