I was fortunate enough to be at the opening night of this wonderful production. In the first interval I raced down to the box office and bought tickets to all the remaining performances. Splendid performances from the rest of the cast, especially Greta Elkins and Lauris Elms, marvelous designs by John Pascoe and all crowned by Our Joan. Bliss!
@@PrinceOberon87 Like I've said before...stick to playing the organ and choral singing. Sills became an overnight star after her first Cleopatra with the NYC opera.
Maravillosa!!!!
Class throughout, exemplary technique and mastery of all the vocal fireworks, including of course the unmatched full trills, meaningful and sustained, as they should be ....
Amazing how good Joan sounds here, even on an old video soundtrack. Nowadays, the singers have the benefit of being recorded in HD but most of them don't produce anything like the glorious Sutherland sound, even with the latest technology at their disposal.
What a beautyful performance. Personally I didn’t know Alcina in video and the scene so nice. Really i loved it.. Joan Sutherland is one of my favorite singers❤️😀 thanks for sharing the video. I send a hug from Managua Nicaragua 🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮
some of the reception of the piece is due to the singer, for me she is singing is very good. "Exellent" for me would be singing the colouratures more pitched and pronounced, but this might be a matter of personal taste. And she is no italian... And some is souroundings...The stage set is somewhat "modernism", but not overdone, at least there are no people running around in contemporary dress. I really 👍those few stage designers who abstain from massively violating stage design for own self-presentation puroses.
Bravissima, La Stupenda, you have not equals!

Still beautiful singing at age 56! There was no one like her!
I love how the ornaments are refined and tasteful. So many singers today turn the the da capo section into a Lucia mad scene.
Yep Sills did it wnd it ruined ot

The ornamentation was excellent - especially the run up to High D at the end!
I saw this production at The Sydney Opera House in 1983 - just absolutely wonderful in every department.
The ending was so touching with the flower petals falling from above.

Totalmente de acuerdo!!!!Vivimos un período KITSCH insoportable...dónde el Mal gusto impera por doquier!!!
I love this, but I also love the "Ah mio cor" from the same production. I want the entire stunning production.
Dame Joan once said "Handel is medicine for the voice."

Stunning, classy and perfect. She never ceases to amaze me. Brava! ❤
The ornaments from 3.06 - Amazing!
Merveilleuse, fabuleuse, extraordinaire Joan Sutherland !
One of the great coloratura sopranos of the 20th century.
I love this recording. La Stupenda! The one and only!

DIOSA la JOAN!!!!la escucho diariamente!!!FABULOSA!!!!!UNA GLORIA DEL BEL CANTO!!!!!!
Enchanting.
this is how a baroque opera should be done....
none of this euro-porno-political-satirical-quasi-noir-film bs.
Sutherland + Handel = divine²
incomparable...without peer.
such a beautiful scenery precinematographic at its best!
Perfection!!!
The proper version to sing Händel. in period costumes and without the sex scenes which Joanie herself disliked and thought were unnecessary
Is there a filmed recording of this production at its full length? This is stunning, and for her age her voice sounds so fresh here!
The 1959 production shoul’ve been recorded
Only Joan only héros loveeeeeeeeeeee
