  • Where do ideas come from? Ideas can come from the strangest places. Where do you find inspiration to write a piece of music, how do you get started and move beyond the blank page. Banish imposter syndrome, get rid of those half finished piece of music and follow composer Guy Michelmore into the most unlikely source of inspiration, a starting point for a piece of music that is within reach of eeryone of you right now.
But where is it and what is that source of inspiration? This video shows you how to take a random everyday source of inspiration and turn it into an effective piece of music using Cubase 13 and Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra samples. You'll learn simple techniques for telling stories with music and conveying different emotions using harmony and orchestration.

"Blimey!" -- the unfeigned surprise, and the clear indication that it was the *label*, and not the actual scent that provided the inspiration -- the seed -- around which the piece was built. You don't actually know how these things will turn out, do you? That's how it comes across, and that makes it great. Nice demonstration. Thanks.

It's interesting how I arrive at writing music. Usually, it comes from following a progression of some sort. Usually quite simple but sometimes complex. Sometimes having something to say and others simply a progression and the inner feeling from sitting in nature and the mood of the weather and my inner processing of life itself.. I believe we are an assemblage of allw e have ever listened too. We cannot help it. I also believe we are wating and listening to hear what we want to hear in the harmony. The harmony being we listen for resolve in all aspects of our being. Kind of like their burning ears want to hear what they want to hear and not listening to sound doctrine. Doctrine being Law and Gospel. Laws of music, laws of God. With the freedom of the Gospel encouraging us to revival and healing. I write my own songs for 50 years. Good or bad. I use a guitar and chordal fragments through the modes or the chordal harmony rules. I listen to bring all those things into a simple rendition of some unexplained memory in harmony. It would be easy to play other people's songs, and indeed it is easy to create using these methods. Now engineering skills. To take us to completion. The Contra bass bowed and the simple guitar. With the voice and vocal harmony. At near 70 how to take this to a next level. Perfection is allowing the expression and nothing to do woth the normal aspects of this is a job to make a living. More a supplement and a gift to be used. Unwrap your present so to speak. Thanks Guy. :) Create your own Hero by following the real hero of this expressive life. The Word of God itself. It speaks what it will to the hearer in spite of the reciter. :) Adding keyboard instruments is something I have done very little. Looking forward to utilizing the summer garden sessions into further compositions. Have a great day. Wanting to be the best Contra bassist I can be is very important. To play these string parts in all voices on one instrument. Jumping between holding down the bass and branching to full instrument use and getting around the harmony in all positions to voice the inner curiosity.

Warning long comment but it is for fun but could also be quite educational.
My I suggest that you go for a walk during a really cold rainy day and get covered in mud while walking the dogs then take a bath/shower using the said product and see/feel if you’ve been revived and then rewrite the music and see if it turns out differently. Method acting so to speak. A just for fun comment, but it would be interesting how psychologically you react to that activity. Also if you disregard the products packaging then you could write a passage of music based upon your own personal feelings with all the senses engaged in that product - smell being an important one as it evokes nostalgia and imaginations instead of being persuaded by a suggestive name. Might be a good lesson to get your students to do

Easy formulaic examples of pseudo revival can be found in music written about rivers or the sea where you have a peaceful brook turning it thrashing white rapids which then flow back into peaceful sea. Or music cantered around storms are a good one. Or you could write a peace on winter where everything is seeming cold and dead then you transpose into “Little April Showers” by Larry Morey and Frank Churchill if you will as the land is revived in spring. Just some thoughtful suggestions that come to mind and I haven’t even watched the video yet

Hey folks, I need some help with the music theory behind the chord progression: At 7:35, Guy goes from Ab, Bb (diatonic, assuming Cmin or Eb scale) to F (not diatonic) and it sounds fantastic. However, I dont really get how F is correlated to the Cmin/Eb(?) key in this particular instance.
Not being a piano Player, although I might have the sound of F in my mind I often struggle to find the right keys on the board to make it a reality and it sometimes drives me nuts :( maybe a bit of music theory might help me there. Any tip would be appreciated, thanks!
