- Where do ideas come from? Ideas can come from the strangest places. Where do you find inspiration to write a piece of music, how do you get started and move beyond the blank page. Banish imposter syndrome, get rid of those half finished piece of music and follow composer Guy Michelmore into the most unlikely source of inspiration, a starting point for a piece of music that is within reach of eeryone of you right now.
But where is it and what is that source of inspiration? This video shows you how to take a random everyday source of inspiration and turn it into an effective piece of music using Cubase 13 and Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra samples. You'll learn simple techniques for telling stories with music and conveying different emotions using harmony and orchestration.
I'm sure others will agree - it's the waffling that makes ALL the difference. It's you. You're unique.
thank you Chris -Ill keep it up then!
I absolutely agree, you’re such an alternative personality who is a breath of creative fresh air. I’ve been following you since 2020, and you’re the reason I started my own creative journey on UA-cam with my SonicAirMusic library music!!!! Don’t change Guy, you’re brilliant 😎👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤩
" Faffing about". Love it. Very old-school UK expression.
This man is a national treasure
Totally agree!
@@Mopsie One of the most chilled and happiest people online. Love Guy!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The final "show" was just great! 🤣😂🤣😂
NOBODY teach you how to compose music like Guy Michelmore, this has to be acknowledge.
When you publish a new video it's like a nice friend paying visit, always a good moment.
I was gleefully laughing at the end anyway, but at "in a recyclable package as well," I just lost it! Fantastic!
If Only there was a way of recording the tunes & chord progressions I hear in my head just before I fall asleep ! ;-)
I did mashups in my head when I was as young as 7 or 8, I wish I had been able to record these back then, I would've had a great career in the music industry. :D
hum them into your phone voice memo. sorted.
I'm waiting for a brain-to-MIDI converter since MIDI came out. 😉
Having 2 phones is good for that ..call your phone leave a message .it's important to grab the key you intended it to be originally.
I've written choruses running up a flight of stairs late for work.
Today ..they have apps on phones where you can fart and make midi of you'd like
Most of the times I can't even sing or hum sound ideas from my mind - sometimes these are whole arrangements. May be a brain deficiency.
O final é o melhor de todos rssssssssss Além de compositor de trilhas, Guy é um grande ator.. kkkkk abraços do Brasil.
Just what I needed! A bit of friday inspiration! 👍👍👍
Go get yourself and radox then!
The final listen was pure gold comendy. I love you channel, Guy - thank you for making our lives better with all this educational and fun content!
Therapist: So, how are you feeling today?
Me: Uplifted with a hint of regret
Oh man, you've managed to make me burst into tears again at the end, tears of laughter of course. 😂 You'll definitely get a spot in my next episode when it comes to great resources for budding composers. 🎶Cheers, Guy!
If that bodywash company doesn't contact you and ask if they can use your music, then something's clearly wrong with them. That was absolutely brilliant :D
Guy Needs-to-know-no-more. You're the best 👍
Now I’ve watched the video, @ 7:45 we get to witness a real life revival as our favourite and indeed best composer ever to grace UA-cam gets that twinkle in his eyes and that sparkle in his wand.
Today was the day we saw a “GUY-VAL” (Guyval) or a Re-Guyval I haven’t quite made up my mind…..ponder ponder
"Blimey!" -- the unfeigned surprise, and the clear indication that it was the *label*, and not the actual scent that provided the inspiration -- the seed -- around which the piece was built. You don't actually know how these things will turn out, do you? That's how it comes across, and that makes it great. Nice demonstration. Thanks.
Best channel on the Tube. I love what you do Guy :)
I love your videos. Whenever I find that I’m forgetting to have fun I watch one of these and am reminded that it’s meant to be enjoyable whether or not I’m any good at it. Which I’m not but it’s important to remember to Have Fun. Thank you! 😀
Lemon scented shampoo with a hint of French horn 😉
Or maybe some Phwoar Anglais
@@masterrenderer4338 it's the way to go!

I think Guy has a second career in stand up! 😂 Great inspiration as always.
Well you’ve certainly revived me! I’ve trying to write a piece to back a video and hitting a bit of a block. This inspired me to get going. Cheers Dave - I love the Guywaffle 😂
Another wacky wonderful composition Guy, bless you.
Thw Gwaffling sets this apart! Genuinely feeling revived, thank you.
I love your channel and enthusiasm!
Great work - and hello from Denmark
My all time favorite. So entertaining! Thank you, Guy! 🎉
Lovely. Very nice. Great video and walk through.
Thanks for a great approach, but the chuckle at the end of the day - priceless!
Another hysterical and amazing video as always Guy! Thank you .
You're not right in the head you know!! Loved every minute of it :)
Long may it remain so
Es un verdadero deleite ver sus videos y sobre todo ese ánimo que inspira a imitarlo, impresionante banco de librerías.
Always incredible fun with learning! Thank you,
Gianni❤
LOL! SO funny and so inspiring at the same time ! Thanks 😄
I love your energy and enthusiasm….and your natural ability to inspire others. Please keep it up. Henry
Thanks for the continued excellent videos Guy.
I've watched for years, but I have to say you excelled yourself in this video. Several LOL moments and the performance at the end was masterful (and hilarious).
Thanks again.
Guy, after watching this, I can say that you are "card carrying certified" nuts... Great job... I loved it
Excellent! You always inspire me!!!!
Your creativity never ends. Outstanding
4:03. Yep. Totally agree on the third. Same thing as airy open chords on a guitar which sound so much better. 12:23. Waffles! Oh yes, with lashings of honey. Like the piece.
G-sus sir, you are a genius ! From nothing - to great piece of music - in 25 minutes.....WOW, I mean WOOOOOOW !!!!!!!
Hahaha! Oh my god, the little bit at the end with the full piece was absolutely hilarious! xD This was a very inspiring video as well. Thank you for this, Guy.
I loved how you let the “revival” guide you to the two different feelings in the track. Logic and art hand in hand. I believe doughnuts are deep fried, not baked, though.
Radox owes you bigtime for this. And also? You're a total nutbar, Guy Michelmore, LOOOOOL! xxx
They need to let him score their next ad for a nice fee 😉
Love it ! Thanks :)
Its always a learning experience watching you write
Though doughnuts were fried not baked 😂. Great video the piano ostanato gave me inspiration for something I'm working on
Awesome as always Guy.
So inspiring, Guy!
" Byyyyy Mennon". Shortest song somebody was handsomely paid for .
great video and great music !
i wasnt sure how this was gonna turn out but wow youve shocked me again guy lol great job
Lovely!
👍 I've suspicions how your idea to work with shower gels comes from... I've read someone in the comments of your last week composition speaking about your music for an "organic Tesco bubble bath"... 😉
You said you'll do and you did! Now, for our great friday pleasure, we've a music about a shower gel "for elves having a collective shower in the ancestral celtic forest and playing harp at the same time in order to get ready to shoot some orcs with a bad personal hygiene".
Next week, something about "The perfect organic oil for your diesel engine"? Or a commercial for an hair implants clinic. You chose. 😁
Love it Guy, inspiration comes from many sources! Luckily you exited Tescos with Radox Revive rather than a 12-pack of extra quilted loo roll 😂
love the music guy!
thank you :)
We're all screaming "Guy! Smell the fragrance!". You went to all that trouble but you didn't smell it until the end ha ha. Smells can inspire music too you know Guy. 😎
Nice pitch for the next Radox ad Guy! :D
Awesome!
Great video! I skipped the body wash for a week and started writing funk music.
That soap company better be sending you the big bucks!
It's interesting how I arrive at writing music. Usually, it comes from following a progression of some sort. Usually quite simple but sometimes complex. Sometimes having something to say and others simply a progression and the inner feeling from sitting in nature and the mood of the weather and my inner processing of life itself.. I believe we are an assemblage of allw e have ever listened too. We cannot help it. I also believe we are wating and listening to hear what we want to hear in the harmony. The harmony being we listen for resolve in all aspects of our being. Kind of like their burning ears want to hear what they want to hear and not listening to sound doctrine. Doctrine being Law and Gospel. Laws of music, laws of God. With the freedom of the Gospel encouraging us to revival and healing. I write my own songs for 50 years. Good or bad. I use a guitar and chordal fragments through the modes or the chordal harmony rules. I listen to bring all those things into a simple rendition of some unexplained memory in harmony. It would be easy to play other people's songs, and indeed it is easy to create using these methods. Now engineering skills. To take us to completion. The Contra bass bowed and the simple guitar. With the voice and vocal harmony. At near 70 how to take this to a next level. Perfection is allowing the expression and nothing to do woth the normal aspects of this is a job to make a living. More a supplement and a gift to be used. Unwrap your present so to speak. Thanks Guy. :) Create your own Hero by following the real hero of this expressive life. The Word of God itself. It speaks what it will to the hearer in spite of the reciter. :) Adding keyboard instruments is something I have done very little. Looking forward to utilizing the summer garden sessions into further compositions. Have a great day. Wanting to be the best Contra bassist I can be is very important. To play these string parts in all voices on one instrument. Jumping between holding down the bass and branching to full instrument use and getting around the harmony in all positions to voice the inner curiosity.
"There's nothing nicer than a sustained horn." Guy Michelmore, 2024
Guy knows what the "Ministry of silly walks" is !
Good old 70s,, this freedom will never come back...
But who's funnier? Cleese or Michelmore?
Very nice, did you move from C Minor Scale to C Major Scale in the last chord?
I go to that Tesco all the time and never see someone I can discuss round robins with.
Amazing!
yep - I'm revivied!
Are you liking the Arturia keyboard? I have the same one. What do you love about it?
top man , genie in gevoel voor music
Nice one Guy :)
Guy, you are one of my few favorite people on the web.
I need to buy ketchup; I'll try to get inspired by that.
Well, I've been in England before, but never shopped in a Tesco, so thanks for that in the start in the vid?
Revived? Is is Easter yet?!? :-)
(Well, it's less than 200 days away...)
♥️
😂 Both funny and educative, thanks as always
thank you :)
K almost spat my coffee out @12:03 literally in the middle of eating a fresh warm donut and drinking a morning coffee lol
If only you could watched a live feed of me as you said that sentence lol yup you’ve def been revived Re-Guyvived
Funny and informative 😂
Getting ideas for music from shower gel? Well that's an Original Source of inspiration! 😉
A shower bottle. Excellent. 😁😁😁
Did you compose all the background music for this video?
“There’s nothing nicer than a sustained horn” 😂😂
😂 absolutely brilliant
A good one for the Goodwood Revival? 🚙 🎉😃
sorry im late, 8:21 do you happen to still remember the chords you played on the short strings?
John Lunn Downton Abbey vibe
In cubase, can you not go in and re-record the mod wheel if you didn’t do it the first time round? I’m thinking of switching from ableton to cubase, but I always do it again because both hands are busy the first time round (with overdub enabled).
First notes I he was writing the Cheers theme song.
Your cameras seem blurry or low-res. Is it the brightness of the windows behind you? Do the lenses need cleaning? Even the lap cam seems blurry and low res. "Arturia" is blurry and not crisp. In contrast, your in-the-field camera seemed great!

Or did you move from the C minor scale to the Bb major scale?
Wasn't it Douglas Adams who answerd the question "Where do you get all your ideas from?" with "From a mail order company in Tenessee" and a explained to a young boy who struggled to find names for the characters in his stories that he probably drinks the wrong sort of coffee?
Sounds like Hans Zimmer... kind of :)
I have another new word for you. "Faffling" - simultaneously faffing and waffling.
HAHAHAHAHAH the end got me crying laughing!!!!!!
For a second or two I wondered if Guy was going to pour Revived Body Wash over his keyboard. 🙂
This is the Guy that we subscribe and view for. Such a good time!
Could you do a presentation motivated by engine oil?
lol
I don’t think I want to know what you can do with a sustained horn and a warm doughnut, thank you very much…
I have yet to see a more clever product placement! 🤣
I am too old for a sustained horn now.
Suspect Guy just wanted an excuse to write off his new body wash as a work expense... 🤣
Me: We need to buy Radox
Wife: why, what's wrong with the stuff we already have?
Me: Uncle Guy says it helps me write better music
