- From the Zarzuela Cubana by Ernesto Lecuona, 17 year old Rita Hayworth literally sets the club on fire, or at least helps, while dancing to "Maria la O," a clip from fom "Dante's Inferno," 1935. Her partner is handsome Gary Leon. Rita was billed as Margarita Cansino, her actual name. I think her 1st smile, and superb dancing really clinched the deal; she was going to be an enormous star! May God bless the inventor of bobby pins!

Everytime I see her dance of Fred Astaire he commented that she was one of his favorite dancers because she was so light on her feet, and it never took her long to memorize the choreography. She was beautiful and decades after her death she is still America's beautiful dancing princess touching hearts from times of old to the present.

I agree with you! Think she started dancing while still under 7 years old! Her beauty was limitless; her talent even more so! One thing I always noticed: she rarely looked down at her feet! Not a snob, but she knew what she was doing, and never had to check out her own steps. We're lucky to have witnessed her talent and beauty! So glad to hear from you!

She was only 16, or 17 here! Given her beauty, dance talent, and make-up, people thought she was much older! She was like one of today's baby models who are 14, but look 28, except she was more beautiful and danced!

The hilarious comic Gilda Radner was named after Rita Hayworth's charcter in the movie,"Gilda." Her parents must have been mesmerized by Rita's undeniable beauty & talent. Rita is in my opinion the most beautiful charismatic actress who ever came out of Hollywood. It's a shame that you rarely see her daughter, Yasmin Aga Khan who looks just like Rita, in magazines.
And like Gilda Radner, Jewish! Sephardic Jews from Spain who changed their religious affiliation during the Inquisition. Look it up if you doubt it.

Years ago I watched this on TV on the "Late, Late movie" with my mom. Mom recognized Rita immediately, but I didn't think it was her because I'd only seen Rita Hayworth with red hair and as a pinup. Mom said that this was earlier in her career. So we both waited for the end credits, and saw Rita billed as "Rita Cansino." We had a great 'ah-ha!!' moment. I was about 13 then. I was also freaking out, 'cause the lady looked much older than the teenager she was!! I'm in my 50s now...sigh. You always bring great clips!!
First, I want to thank you for complimenting me on my choice of clips! I try! Your memory of having seen this with your mother is wonderful! I suspect, like the 13 year old models of these days, the performers of the '30s were also made up to appear older. I suspect that Rita, having danced since childhood, and her incredible beauty could have fooled anyone into thinking that she was much older! This was way before Hollywood had its way with her appearance; electrolysis, etc. Still, her face, talent, and that beguiling smile solidified her future career! Though she came across on-screen as a femme-fatale, she was really very shy and she said so! Even Spencer Tracy, who thought this film was garbage, said of her: "The fact that she survived this terrible film is a testament to her talent!" Again, I'm so grateful to hear from you!

Thanks Gram Fischer! Guess I'll never understand it completely, but there was something really bewitching about Rita's smile! As for Fred, they're great in everything together, but my personal favorite has always been "I'm Old Fashioned," from "You Were Never Lovelier!"

Behind that smile she seems so sad... It is really heartbreaking! Rita paid such an enoumous price to please everybody around her, especially men which exploited her terribly, starting by her father who abused her sexually and mentally. She was so graceful, so adorable, and a faultless dancer. I wish she was happy and had all her dreams of true love and a hapoy family life true.
So horrible. Mother was complicit and allowed her husband to sleep with his little girl and take her as his "partner" to dives. The song "Tangerine" was written about her and it infuriated her. God bless her frail soul.
Please don't believe all the lies against Rita's father. He NEVER abused her. It's all lies by a certain author just so she could sell more books 😠 - And it's funny she only published her nonsense after Rita's passing. She knew she couldn't be sued if Rita wasn't here.

@@felinefinexo There's not a single shred of evidence to say Rita was abused by her father. He never really got on with Orson Welles, so when he died, Orson decided to make up some disgusting lies about him. This was in the 80s when Rita was suffering a lot with Alzheimer's and hence couldn't really stand up for herself or her father.

@darlinkula1 Thanks for your comment; Rita, even here as a kid was mesmerizing! I never knew about Gilda Radner and how she got her name. Thanks! As for Yasmin, the only time I ever see her is on a yearly basis when they have an Alzheimer's fund-raiser for wonderful Rita. They'd always have it at the Tavern on The Green in Central Park, New York. Pretty certain the restaurant's either been closed, renamed or similar. You're so right about Yasmin; she looks so like her mom!

Never heard of "Zarzuela Cubana".. BUT this clip happens to be from an American movie called "Dante's Inferno" starring Spencer Tracy. You can see him too in the clip, Rita was under contract at Fox when she made this, and she also appeared in "Charlie Chan In Egypt" at Fox soon after.

Actually, the way she appeared in this movie is much closer to what she actually looked like before the studio mandated dramatic changes in eyebrows, hair color and hairline.
She did look splendid, as a brunette (her natural hair colour), and at 17 years old. She didn't need any "improvements" 🙄, as mandated/suggested later by her Hollywood "advisors". The only reason for the latter was to make her look more "Anglo" 🤔, as if it was not sufficient for her to be half Irish/English.
She was the most beautiful and talented actress/dancer in Hollywood in that era, in my opinion. And, on top of that, a beautiful soul. Humble and precious.
