      Exactly 💯. When magicians like Copperfield tells us he's going to walk through The Great Wall of China, or make The Statue of Liberty disappear... I KNOW he's going to show us that he flawlessly. did it.
      I don't think for A SECOND that he really may have. So to me, I would pay more to see the genuis behind it rather than the actual show itself.

I am primarily a consultant and know that ALL big name magicians keep a team of creators/consultants on the payroll. It is VERY rare that a big name came up with, or created a large scale effect. They are more the FACE of a large team. The more $$ they have to invest on the team size etc., the better the effects and bigger they may become. 🤷🏽‍♂️

      The throwing of them to the underside of the stage was so dangerous. I figured out the trick by just thinking about it and looking at the "sheet" flying, but that part looked way too dangerous. They could have hit their heads on the sides or something. I suspect he was using top notch engineers to be safe.

      I saw the Portal trick live. He "reappeared" behind me. Of course, he was brought out in a disguise and sat there with an assistant the whole time the "live feed" was playing. It's still pretty impressive despite the majority of the trick being video editing. The cable pulling them back across the platform is so fast, I'm amazed he hasn't been injured all these years.

    The Portal illusion was so well-conceived that Copperfield really deserves all the accolades he gets for his productions. The story-line in the setup of the illusion was a bit too on-the-nose in its appeal to the emotions of the audience perhaps, but the impact of the performance was persuasive and unique. As a set-piece, it is a real masterwork. Kudos to the performers!

I'm not sure but it looks like there at the back of the platform is a spring panel that let's them take the necessary step down to the runway, This is when they enter under the black slip cover. I think a key frame during the illusion is seen under the platform right after they disappear, it's black for a second and then returns to normal .

      all the editing could be done months in advance as well. with only the texture maps for the initials and the polaroid changed for the final render shown on the screen. you don't need to track the hand in realtime or track the polariod image in real time if the beach was filmed months before and there's only marker bits on it. basically if he just put his hand in a scanner with the skin flat on it to get the texture(glue some marker lines on the flatbed scanner itself to get the hand in same position every time) , it would go into the already prepared script that would replace the texture map and run a render of the video. the actual render part of the video doesn't need much cpu even if its a bespoke script/program that does that part, easily* doable on those resolutions even on a 2002 computer.
      I say easily but I mean for like a competent realtime multimedia programmer, don't need to be a john carmack to do it - all the heavy work calculations can be done in advance.

      Indeed. And after I understood how it's done, I'm actually impressed with this trick and the ingenuity it took to come up with it, while also still being relatively simple.
      But the real trick is to have "three times less" of something and then not ending up with twice the negative of what you started with :p That will never not annoy me 🤣I want a mathematician explain to me how that works and if I am just wrong about it and three times less does end with 1/3rd, because in my physics minded head it can't 🤣I understand that it's a "normal" thing to say, just like saying the sun comes up every morning, which it doesn't, but that at least makes some sense communicatively, but "three times less" is just never dividing something by three and really grinds my gears 🤣I can accept calling purple a colour and a sunset a sunset, but I will never accept that "three times less" is 1/3rd 🤣And a half is two times less and an equal amount is one times less? How? 🤣
      Anyway, three times less than 9G is -18G and I will die on that hill! 🤣

    Ref: 49:20 During the 90's and 2000's I performed fire 'tricks' including escapology with explosives and body burning with fire sticks and what was basically fire lighter fluid, I never had any professional fire suits like in these type of performances, I did do it for real though and have the scars to prove it, even did it live on TV (nice burn on my leg made people squeal a bit lol) and taught someone to eat fire (not blow) backstage and they performed with me for the end of the show and she really was a volunteer from the audience and bloody lovely she was too 🙂.
    I also put fire shows together with up to 60 performers for some big raves around the UK, with tower lorries, flame throwers, lots of pyros, fire pits and so on, so loved those times, now live on my boat on a nice quiet canal in Yorkshire, UK.
    Oh Yeah, I also ate fire for the then Queen Liz and our now King Charles for his 50th Birthday at Buckingham Palace, he had seen me at an event (no not a rave, was at the Royal Albert Hall) and got me booked for his Birthday.

    Disappearance from the platform still remains a mystery to me. In the original recording, we can see earlier that people are sitting behind the platform, we can see their heads and at the end of platform there are two vertical metal pillars, that are quite close to each other. We need to keep in mind that there are two heavy adult men, and if they were pulled in, they would have to fit together between the pillars without hitting them to land behind the platform in a place where we can see the audience. There would have to be an airbag in the hole to eliminate the fall. People sitting on the side would clearly see them underneth the curtain and falling with the impact to the hole. This is the best explanation we have so far, but I think there is still some mystery left unsolved.

I know that the video is low resolution because I don’t think he has ever put this out in DVD, but it seems incredibly dangerous for them both to be pulled away at that speed, their mass together doesn’t seem like it matches what it should look like if they are strapped together being pulled through the air horizontally. It’s incredibly confusing as to how it is done. I wish I could have been in the audience. I bet all the people sitting on the sides are in on it, I think the camera’s view is the only place he wants people watching.

      It would be too dangerous to perform without some form of protection but David would have had the resources to potentially have inflatable body protection that would have made it a lot safer. Its impossible to know how much the platform should have moved without their body weight without knowing exactly how it was constructed but we know they were there and we know they were hone and we can set the net movement and it isn't much.

    • @brendanwood1540
      @brendanwood1540 2 місяці тому +14

      The entire audience is probably fake. Several productions that appear to be in front of a live audience actually hire people to sit and react as if they were very impressed and enthusiastic. There isn't a continuous shot from when the two men get on the platform and when the camera is panned to the other side where we see the light moving inside. The light could have been controlled on a wire. We see it swinging after the curtain is pulled away. These are all different sequences filmed and cut together.
      The platform is very thin, the curtain pull away is too violent, the smoke and light don't obscure enough, and there isn't a place for mirrors or a hidden chute under the platform. Reasonable deduction says it was staged and the audience was paid after signing a NDA.

    Penn Gillette and Chris Angel have expressed similar sentiments. Chris was on Penn's podcast and the expressed sentiment was along the line of "Real magic is boring because if it existed that would just be how the world worked. What's far more interesting, for both the audience and the magician, is creating the appearance of real magic through a well crafted illusion."

    Here is my thing with the portal. The people on the stage just seemed too comfortable. They did not seem nervous and the little kid, if he were truly picked, would be so nervous and didn't need anything further explained. For instance, there is a good chance the kid would say "You want me to draw here, or would have drawn too small or would have been giggling, maybe wouldn't have stood in the right spot. When taking the video, if you have ever tried to take a picture of a group of people, no one can figure out where to stand, how to stand, etc... These people didn't need directions, just stood perfect. They all just seemed too comfortable and just did not seem random. Also, when the guy signed on the arm, the letters looked too perfect. When you draw on skin, the marker would not have been so perfect looking. It would have faded a little at the ends. Especially on skin. If you take a marker and draw on someone's arm the way he did, it doesn't even come close to looking like that. Now, I'm not saying I have it figured out, those are just my observations. Another fantastic job though with the video. Top notch!

    Say what you want about Copperfield, he's the best. I went to his show and caught one of the randomly thrown things, to be chosen as trick participant. They placed us under some pillars, then covered with cloth, then dropped a whole Lincoln car onto the pillars, right above my head, and then the car disappeared. We were sitting under that car, people watched the stage from their seats... I still don't know how he could have done it and where that massive thing went.. I was very impressed.

      The first time, I was a few rows from the front, sitting more on the side.
      The seat next to me was empty the entire night. About half way through the show, the person sat in. I found it odd.
      Then he went on to do a prediction where he would eventually teleport to an island with an audience member - 10:38.
      The whole platform then swung over me. It was pretty cool.
      But no, they were not pulled by a cable with the cloth. This one is incorrect.
      The thing you didn't mention is how the cloth is thin when it flies and it lands on the ground.
      Secondly, the platform is constantly shaking as if they are moving from within.

I'll give you a hint as to the actual method: Look at how stationary the bottom edge of the bucket is when dumping out the large number of fish and how its perfectly stabilized while the rest of the bucket pivots around it. Also in the footage you can see his body covers that corner for several of the shots but when it doesn't there's clearly some video masking that's poorly done.

Then I would wear clothing soaked in fire gel. I'd be performing basic card tricks in a public place, someone would run up, dose me with some gasoline (only on the leather) and light me up. Everyone would be freaking out and after about ten seconds I'd say OUT! Clap my hands and the fire would go out. It was the water in the leather being activated by motion. People really thought I had control over fire lol!

    The Dynamo bucket trick I think has an even simpler explanation-- computer effects. How could you not spot that the bottom/front edge of the bucket (lower-left corner as viewing the video) is _stationary?_ More than simply a false bottom to allow a couple fish out, but a slide of some type is used to feed the fish in through the false bottom & then digitally edited out afterward. And yes, the audience is in on it. I hate it when people refer to video effects as magician's illusions.

    • @karonuva
      @karonuva Місяць тому +1

      This was exactly what I was thinking too, it's basically locked in place so it's clear they just keyed whatever tube was feeding fish out, and the bucket bottom is just like a pet door flap to allow fish to be pushed through.

    • @irehman7
      @irehman7  Місяць тому +10

      If you would like a simpler explanation, we can assume all the tricks are "computer tricks" and not bother watching any reveal video ever again. You missed the point of the video. Having been in this field for over a decade, I know magicians don't just jump to "computer effects", they love their craft. A layman would always jump to this "explanation", just because they find it the easiest way out. Dynamo used both a prop and camera trickery, but nothing was "computer effects". If "computer effects" are used its only to polish the videos and hide flaws, not have the entire method be CGI otherwise there is no point of being a magician. Remember Dynamo like many other TV magicians are performing for a camera and things that slip unnoticed in a live performance show up in a recording. Dynamo tries to make sure the integrity of the reactions is there by not faking the reactions.

    In the final explanation, you missed to explain if the choice of hearts by the drummer was forced else if not, what if the drummer had chosen a different suit. Barring that, these are some of the best reveals of impossible-looking magic tricks I have seen on UA-cam.

    Portal is easily explained. Parts when the dude runs into the water were pre recorded. Parts with David are live but on fake stage when they went after disappearing. Those shots are mixed together and aired to the audience. There is no streamline shot when the guy runs to the water or the father. Just simple cut.

    • @robbhays8077
      @robbhays8077 Місяць тому +3

      Yep. It's obvious. It even looks green screened based on the lighting.

    • @miles6910
      @miles6910 Місяць тому +3

      the image on the screen is definitely super-imposed in post. it might have been the same one people in the audience saw, but there's no real knowing what they saw exactly.
      he also says something interesting at one point "we threw a ball a number of times until you were satisfied" when talking about the process to select "ts". if you have mostly audience members with a few shills, you just have them keep throwing the ball until it lands with somebody you planted. i mean, if it's an indeterminate number of throws the game keeps playing until he wins.
      fwiw, i worked in a post facility in the early 90's and they worked on some copperfield's tv specials. they had to sign nda's, but even without saying what they were doing, the suites they were using were clearly for things like wire removal and paint work.

      @@miles6910 Yeah, what the audience saw on the night, is not what was broadcasted. The Hawaii footage has been super imposed in post. Probably filmed the next day as to use the initials drawn on his arm as quickly as possible without it fading too much. What the audience saw on the night was probably a pre-recording, but definitely not the Hawaii footage we saw. The audience probably won't notice the initials not matching on the night, but as a broadcast, you need to make sure they match in order to keep the illusion when watched on repeat.

    Love your videos but I think using the flying apparatus for David's ONE appearance is much too complex to be used as the solution. I've see this live on multiple occasions and the platform and hanging cloth are visible for quite some time before the show starts and they even have audience members come up to inspect it. I think it's much simpler than using the flying mechanism. If you look closely at the assistants lifting the platform, the ones on the left purposefully lean into the support cones, while the assistants on the right are a standing away from the cones. My theory is that the assistants on the left are standing close the cones to block the view behind them. When the curtain cloth comes down, Copperfield is able to climb up on the platform, behind the left-back assistant where he is hidden from view. In the live version, it looked to me that he was using BA to get in position behind his assistants. I couldn't see him get into position, but the stage was lit exactly as I would expect for BA use.

    The "telepathy" trick doesn't actually require an off-stage assistant or any Bluetooth communications, and the bone conduction speaker only needs one audio file (saying "Italy"). That's because the "telepath" asked Amanda for the number _before_ showing her the phone. In other words, whatever number she said, she could have quickly typed into an app, and it would immediately display "Italy" with that number.

    • @clanOT
      @clanOT Місяць тому

      The special app will need a number keyboard the at top of the screen, as she was holding and pressing something near the top before handing over to Amanda. The whole list is then generated instantly with Italy always being the number typed in

    • @mikosoft
      @mikosoft Місяць тому

      @@clanOT actually a keypad would look suspicious, it may just be a scroll wheel, or rather two, one for ones digit and one for tens digit (including 10 for 100). She would just look like she's scrolling to a place in the list as she did while in reality she was inputting the number.

    • @clanOT
      @clanOT Місяць тому

      @ true, that’s a better idea, but I think we see her tapping twice on the top of the screen before handing the phone over to Amanda, so either is possible.

    If I had seen the mentalist trick I would have known immediately how it was done. I cannot believe so-called mentalists are still relying on the code-word/phrase that I first read about 40 years ago, in a book written 15-20 years before, that took place in the 1800s. I thought it was neat when I read about it but thought more people would have known how this was done by now.

    Dynamo trick i think has to do more with video editing. If you pay attention to the motion the bucket is actually doing while hes shaking it , it seems to be attached to something at the bottom. Could be something like a wide tube coming from the other side behind him . When you shake a bucket like that even if empty , theres plenty of chance the whole bucket is gonna move up and down , his bucket only moves up and down on the rim, the bottom aint moving at all . Almost like resting on the edge o something. This could be confirmed by the ppls reaction there, really fake reactions needless to say. Since theres couple cuts and edited for continuity.. like you say, then is pretty obvious here gonna a cut before he starts pouring and right after hes done .
