Agree with the broadcasting issues. This just felt like another first round matchup. Like sure it's playoff basketball, but I didn't get the special feeling that one should get with a Finals. And it's not about the 4-1 outcome, because other 4-1 series have still felt important (even the 2017 Warriors vs Cavs). They need to get the custom courts back. Physically, not just a digital overlay.

As someone old enough to remember when the Lakers mopped the Nets in 2002 and thinking that was a really boring finals, I would say this one definitely wasn't great but it's not the worst finals I've ever seen. This Celtics team was just way too good this year and felt inevitable. Plus, everyone is right. There isn't much pageantry to the finals compared to the other major North American sports. The Stanley Cup has the fucking best trophy in sports, the Super Bowl is a capitalist hellhole while still being a love letter to football, and the World Series has tradition on its side.

I feel like the mavs being a popular pick for a lot of people was part wishcasting from celtics hate, and part perception due to a "weak" and admittedly injured east. But like, we saw this celtics team for 82 games and they were extremely dominant through that and the play-offs. I felt like I was going insane when I assumed going into the series that this would be the celtics in like 5 or 6.

    • @Herzeder
      @Herzeder 4 місяці тому +47

@@upfulsoul826 You all really need to stop with the "east is too weak, that's why the Celtics look good" reasoning. It's silly, it didn't make much sense a month ago, it makes even less sense now.
This season, the Celtics have a 22-8 season record against Western teams, which extrapolated over 82 games would give them a 60-22 record (a far cry from the Lakers' 45-37, who don't even only play Western teams anyway, bad comparison really). That extrapolated Celtics record is not far off their true record of 64-18, in which they've mostly played against "weak" Eastern teams. And they have literally the 3rd best offensive rating in history, while being a very good defense. They didn't just dominate the East during the season, they dominated the whole league, so they fully deserve their place as number 1 in the East (and in the league) for the season.
Finishing first in the conference usually makes a PO run easier, and indeed they were not faced against that good of an opposition during their run, it's true, but it's not as if they struggled during that run and they're just not responsible for the opposition they face. Sometimes MJ's Bulls or KD and Steph's Warriors have had very easy PO runs, but nobody doubts the dominance of their team, it makes no sense to judge a team solely on the opposition it faces (not saying the Celtics are the same caliber of the teams I took as an example here obviously).
Anyway, the Celtics just won the Finals quite easily against the team that came out on top in the West, it's not like they got swept by the Mavs. It's time to stop with this silly reasoning now.

So, I make music and here is what I will tell you. For productions like this a simple beat made by one guy ain’t gonna cut it. Emulating human instruments and symphonies are simple not possible or lack that UMPF you were talking about. For companies like EPSN / ABC they used to hire actual symphonys to put something together. That is the ONLY way to make something so grandiose. Just like the Star Wars or Lord of the ring movie scores. They need to allocate more resources to that. Most of us cannot “see” music, but a lot of us can hear it. When you hear great music it creates an atmosphere that gives you goosebumps. Without it films and shows lack suspense.

I'm a casual, but the last series I really cared about was Nuggets/Wolves since that one at least went 7. Doesn't help that the Cs and Mavs both play uninteresting basketball. I get all the talk of how talented the Cs roster is, but they're so boring to watch. Things that didn't help this:
    1. ESPN constantly glazing them for being from Boston. They obviously aren't going to say that, but anybody who's had to watch ESPN at the gym knows what I'm talking about. It would've been just as bad if it was the Lakers. They just glaze the big market teams with a "storied history" and it makes me tired of hearing about them.
    2. J Kidd shows how unimportant coaching can be in the NBA. Guys like Spo or Pop can have a huge impact on the game, but Kidd looks like a clueless idiot on the sidelines, and the Mavs win anyway because they have a good roster.
    3. Everything else Kofie said about the ESPN/ABC presentation. Feels like they didn't give a shit about what should be their biggest sports programming of the year. I don't necessarily love NBC sports but they at least make it feel like they're happy to have this on air. TNT makes random mid-season games feel important and fun. I don't know why ESPN can spend hours breathlessly glazing the Cs but when it's time for the actual game, it's like they stopped caring. It's similar to how Fox's World Series coverage detracts from the game, though 90% of that is Joe Buck.

I feel like you could show that to a casual viewer and they can immediately pick up why this game is meaningful, eras of the league, all time greats, and not to mention the background music. It felt BIG. I don’t understand why ESPN/ABC are unable to produce a product for the NBA that puts the square focus on making the Finals feel big, feel like there is a championship on the line. Now, I understand with a 7 game series vs a single game like (ie. Super Bowl) it does make the equation different, but then again, ESPN has the CFP and I honestly have zero complaints with that product. The graphics, build up, overall production value and everything surrounding those games are phenomenal. What can’t they invest that same effort into the NBA? I guess time will tell

Go Mavs! Congrats Celtics. Kofie, you were spot on about the broadcast. I skipped the pregame and halftime. Enjoyed Breen and Burke. Inside the NBA would be amazing for the Finals.

I think it's fine to say that the Celtics are one of the best teams of the last decade but you've got to quit saying NBA history. They got out of a super easy East and ended up playing a 5-seed in the finals. I don't think we know how good this team is but we know it's a really solid team. I don't even think they go back to back. I'm not trying to hate on them but they ended up getting a team that they matched up really well against in the finals and I'm not so sure that the result would have been the same if that had been the Nuggets or the Timberwolves especially the Nuggets. Boston is one of the better teams in the last 5 years but that's as far as I'm willing to go. Let's see what happens to them over the next couple years and then we can start placing them correctly in NBA history. . Remember that the Nuggets had a pretty easy time in the playoffs when they won the championship as well but they got knocked out before they even got to their conference finals the next year. Let's not jump on the bandwagon and figure out how good they are over the next few years.

The Mavs were never going to win. Dallas has no plan. They weren’t architected. They let Brunson walk, ran Tingus Pingus out of town, went to the thrift store for the worst piece of Brooklyn’s super team, and then tanked for a weak draft pick. And don’t get me started on Jason Kidd. That’s not how championships are built.

@@jacksonhoward3444in a league with no super teams anymore the Celtics were as close as you can get without being a super team. That’s not their fault at all. But it’s still pretty boring seeing a team that’s clearly above everyone else just dominate the whole season to a championship.
Like I said. Not their fault at all they did what they were supposed to do and can only play who’s in front of them. But it still made the playoffs pretty predictable and boring. Every other team was scratching and clawing while the Celtics were basically running through flower fields.

Were a lot of analysts and fans really expecting the Mavs to win? That wasn’t my perception. Can’t believe if you’ve watched these 2 teams that anyone would actually have the Mavs over the Celtics. Yeah this was worst playoffs in like 20 years (since I’ve been watching)

Fans were picking Dallas 70-30 in like every poll and ESPN's analysts were about 50-50
Agree though. I thought it was wild people thought these teams were close. Especially since Boston's offense and defense are designed in a lab to beat this Mavs team

I'm fully convinced that a #1 option can have too much of the offensive load placed on him. Luka turned the ball over and bricked so many shots at crucial times because the rest of his team, especially Kyrie, was unreliable as far as shot making goes.
His defense was also abysmal for most of these games. If you want to be kind, you could say he was saving his energy for the offense. Unfortunately, for the finals, this kind of playstyle doesn't work well.
He may have been the best player on the floor, but he also didn't perform up to his usual level of greatness. Terrible free throw percentage. Relatively low FG%. Also, fouling out the way he did in game 3 (I think) was a terrible decision on his part. Mavs could have won that game.
Of course, most importantly, Boston was able to guard him and, especially, his team so damn well.
My Dad was quite angry that Dallas wasn't moving the ball around.

@@myam754So you want DJJ dribbling against Derrick White and PJ trying to drive on Al Horford?
In order to move the ball you gave to get two on the ball and Dallas couldn't do that against Boston except in the 60 minutes KP was playing because they couldn't beat Boston's defenders off the dribble and Boston switched every screen.
Even if you change the offense and run Kyrie around like Steph, Boston is still just gonna switch.
The only way to beat a switching team is isolation -- to make them bring two to the ball -- or on the glass. Otherwise they will switch and all that player and ball movement does nothing.
