This specific generation is not really considered pioneers. The pioneers are Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Caz, Kool Moe, Bizzy Bee, Melle Mel, King Tim III, Funky Four plus One.
These were artists that were out 8 to 12 years before EPMD. You could even throw RUN-DMC in that group. There's a whole era of one hit wonders that came out with single hits before EPMD.
We're using the term "pioneers" for the wrong group.

Just like you I begin to go back instead of being in the present with hip hop. Yeah T.I., Jeezy and Lil Wayne was the music of my time? But I choose the the era before me! EPMD changed my life at 15 years old along with NWA and more..Now at 32 I'm glad to see someone like you that has a different outlook than the ones your age with rap music. You gotta listen to "Crossover" and "Headbanger" from EPMD! But also look into the history as well you'll be surprised at what you find out, the ups and downs of their fame. Nonetheless they're legendary!
