- A rather decent Hi8 camcorder from 1998 that I only paid $15 for. I need a new battery for it, but otherwise it is as good as new! Also featuring some of my other flea market finds.

I got this camcorder from Ebay a year ago and i like I know it's not HD but I still like it I use it sometimes for family events and I like that 90s feel it has when i record and watch it on my TV BTW I do have a Sony hdr cx380 HD that I got 4 years ago

That case is nice. I also have nearly the same camera; I used to mount it to the dash of my work car, and make driving videos. There is one on my channel. This was YEARS before "dash cams" came out. My dickhead boss made me take it down- because he said people were calling, and complaining about me "recording them" in traffic. What say now, scumbags? LOL. BTW- I paid $70 USD for the 12v DC car adapter; it simply plugs into the transformer, then to camera. How things have changed.
Thanks for the demonstration! I have a sony ccd-trv513 and was wondering if it's possible to access the camera without a tape inserted in? It's completely in Japanese but some of the buttons did correspond to the ones you pressed in the demo.
You can still power on the camera and see the camera's image through the viewfinder, LCD, or line out even without a tape. You just won't be able to record anything.

The easiest way would be to find a Digital8 camcorder that supports playback of Hi8 tapes, and find a computer that has a FireWire input. Play back the tape in the Digital8 camcorder and record it to the computer over the FireWire cable.

Yo I just got the same camera today don't have a battery charger, but it works when it's plugged into the wall. Can you record when it's plugged into the wall?

You can use the video cables to hook them up to your TV.
If one were to play an analog tape recorded in the true 16:9 mode on a Digital8 camcorder and stream it to the computer (or another DV device) through FireWire, would the camcorder automatically switch to 16:9 mode and stream a 16:9 DV signal?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, but if you are referring to being able to use the camcorder's video jacks as inputs, then it can do that.
yo man, do you know if i can record with digital8 tapes in a hi8 camcorder?
I'm trying to fix my grandfather's. When hitting the record button it will record for about 5 seconds and then stop automatically. Not sure how to fix this issue. Could it be the lithium battery? How is that replaced?
There's a setting on the camcorder that tells it to only record for 5 seconds, see if you can find that setting and disable it.

Best bet would be an aftermarket battery from Amazon/eBay, or hunting down a genuine Sony battery.
dude do u know maybe how i can get a good(with Nightvision, Stereo mic) hi8 camcorder without having to spend around 200-300 on ebay? :( im trying to get one for my final assignment since i want to do a short film
They shouldn't be that expensive...just keep looking around for a good deal and feel free to also check local listings on places like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Letgo, etc. Those places, garage sales and flea markets are how I found most of my cameras.

Put the tape into a Digital8 camcorder and use Firewire to digitally transfer the video to a PC.

What crooks Sony were. Imagine selling a Hi8 camcorder without the SVideo socket which is the only way to see the better quality from Hi8. Unless you play the tape on something else. Presumably Sony hoped people would buy one of their very costly Hi8 players as well as the camcorder? This was peak rip-off for them.

No I didn't. The camcorders both can shoot in native 16:9 mode. So I did that for the video.
I've been making videos here for 5 years, I think I know what I'm doing.
