- Benadryl also know as diphenhydramine represents a first generation antihistamine that may improve allergy symptoms and counteracts certain types of itching and urticaria / hives. While still popular for treating the common cold, the idea it provides benefit in this regard was disproved by the military more than a half century ago.
Benadryl or diphenhydramine ranks among the most frequent sleep aids either by itself or as Nytol or Tylenol PM. Unfortunately it interrupts the normal sleep architecture and leads to next morning grogginess especially among the elderly. Actually use of this medication by senior citizens may create more problems than it solves.
Common side effects of Benadryl / diphenhyramine include constipation, urinary hesitancy or inability to void, dry eyes, dry mouth and mental confusion. The second generation antihistamines - Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec also available as generics - provide comparable relief of allergy symptoms without many of the adverse reactions.
For nasal allergies, inhaled corticosteroid sprays generally offer greater relief and more rapid onset of action with fewer side effects.
It used to work great for sleep. But it backfired on me. Terrible dreams… Insomnia… Anxiety through the roof in the morning

My brother said the first pill that ever made him high was the Benedryl he was given at just 9 years old when he had poison ivy all over his face and eyelids. He was taking Benedryl recently again (now almost 50 years later) because of severe insomnia. His "sleep" ended up being so light that he ended up hallucinating and has been in the hospital trauma unit for ten days so far

Took 50mg everyday for 10 years for sleep, quit one day, no taper. Quitting destroyed my life, I became allergic to all foods and all meds. Itched head to toe for 5 years straight. Tried getting back on but now I react to benadryl. Its been a living hell. If you are on, dont stop.l suddenly, try tappering very slow over months. Destroyed and still destroying my life.

Benadryl doesn’t make me sleepy, in fact it causes sleeplessness and makes me feel awful like I’m. Creeping in my own skin…. wish it would help me sleep.
We use Benedryl in the hospital to extend the therapeutic benefits of pain medication.
I was taking Tylenol pm for years and it wasn't working so I switched to Unisom. At first it worked but then it stopped so I started taking more. The other night I woke up at 2 am and took two tabs, still couldn't sleep. Got up at 4am and rode my Peloton. Felt crappy. Got off the bike and I started seeing images on my white wall that looked like floral wall paper. Clearly I was hallucinating. It also makes my anxiety spike in the morning. Last night was the first night I didn't take it and I woke up with anxiety again, no hallucinations, but nauseous and constipated. I also can't pee. I've also recently developed Tinnitus. Im stopping this shit stat

I take Benadryl (50mg) occasionally for allergies. For me it works very well and I don't get any unpleasant side effects. Sometimes in addition to allergy relief, it does produce a sense of calm and tranquility which afterward gives way to drowsiness. But the drowsiness usually goes away if I take a short nap or even goes away on its own after an hour or two.

I believe that I had a Benadryl addiction. I was taking for years for sleep due to sleep paralysis. I had stopped taking it a little over a week ago because I was out on Amitriptyline for migraines. After stoping the Benadryl suddenly I have broke out in a hive rash around day 7 or 8. Is this possibly due to the sudden stop? I also took 1 dose of a new mushroom based supplement called AHCC this could have caused the outbreak also. The hives came about an hour after the first and only dose. But I’m not allergic to mushrooms so I’m skeptical and leaning more towards the ending of the Benadryl. What are your thoughts?
Surprised to hear Allegra doesn't affect the brain. Has a strong latent (12hrs) stimulant effect. Helped me a lot with intl' jetlag.
What about Vilazodone?

I've been using Benadryl for quite some time, but I think it's time to try something else. I'm 73.
Do you feel any cognitive decline from it ? I take 12.5 mg every night for 6 years and it helps me sleep and I feel fine i haven't took more than 25 mg because 12 and 25 mg has never not worked

It can dry your lungs out and lead to pneumonia, make sure to ask about that. God bless!
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in may 2021. The Urology was more concerned about putting money in his pocket than taking care of my health. I fired his ass, decided to go on strict diet and I cut off all sugar and processed food that feed the cancer cell. I wouldn't trust your Dr. They are agents working for the Pharmaceutical Companies. I been cured taking Apricot Powder bitter seeds pills, and age garlic organic pills.
My girlfriend is receiving benadryl in a Psychiatric hospital along with her antipsychotics I'm concerned because it causes more lethargy along with her antipsychotics an she's been gaining a tremendous amount of weight which could've been prevented if she wasn't giving benadryl because her antipsychotics already block the H1 receptor

I think it's pretty safe to say yes, I don't think it's a plecabo effect, I have bad anxiety and it seems to help me.

Benadryl is best enjoyed in taco form at the pegeant.
You can get high on that stuff but i would prefer DXM Dextromethorphan it's much more pleasant !
I take anywhere from 100mg - 175mg for insomnia.

J Y yeah, I only take it nowadays maybe once a week and it still barely works. So I either take Seroquel low dose or Phenergan. (I have Insomnia).

120 mg of oxycodone and 12 50 mg of benodryl is what I take every night.

Not good to take......it actually causes more anxiety in me.....in the beginning it did not but the more I took it the worse the anxiety got.....and it causes constipation...AND blurred vision.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You skim over the effects on the heart like they exist but they're not a big deal.
It's much less harmful to the heart compared to epinephrine, which is why I believe it should be used in place of epinephrine as an intramuscular last resort, although it should not be sold over the counter, it is much too dangerous.
