funnily enough I watched the entire season for the first time yesterday. It's the best TV show I've seen all year easily. Their willingness to make something this dark has me thinking an adaptation of Berserk is possible
No watch Arcane: League of Legends hey!!
Lots of Berserk adaptations have been done. None have been good. Some have been fine. Most have been trash.
Hope springs eternal, but I am not going to hold my breath.
Something I really liked with the episode with the puppet show was that it was two stories told in parallel, bleeding over into each other. And which character in one represented which in the other kept shifting. And it still made perfect sense as the characters are that complex and well established by then which allowed for that. That episode was masterful.
Love the fact that all rhe characters have growth, arcs, strengths and flaws. Missing from a lot of shows today.
Akemi and Mizu are perfect examples of actual strong female characters. I can't wait for season 2!
Aren't they a bit shitlib feminists, tho? I mean, isn't Akemi's whole arc just "muh woman power"? And Misu should not be that good at facing men.
@@baronnashor7713 akemi used her femininity at times to get what she wants and her teacher was a man trying to help her understand how lucky she was and to make use of her station. Mizu can feel a bit OP at times(1example. carrying Teigen up a wall) but most of the situations she wins because of being smart and skilled or observant, using tactics and momentum for example to win against many or physically superior opponents!
@@baronnashor7713 Akemi is the embodiment of actual female power. Her skill is in her ability to manipulate men which is what she has done since she was a child. She's the Japanese Cleopatra. Mizu has been strongly hinted at having demon powers due to her obsessive need for revenge
@@AmbiguousMan724 It’s definitely not garbage, it’s impossible to argue over wokeness since that can come down to the individual, but is a very well written show. And in my opinion, not woke. Mizu, while strong, is not invulnerable, and is a horrible person which is actually recognized by the characters and story. Akemi is another strong female character, but is done so realistically. She controls men using her femininity, which we can’t just cast off as wokeness. Not all men are perfect Gary Stu’s, women can manipulate them. If we don’t allow that, we are no better than the people we are fighting against.
My thoughts exactly. She's up there with Buffy, Ripley, and Sarah Conner.
This series could become a modern masterpiece.
It already has!!
The first season is, for sure. I just hope season 2 and beyond will be as well.@@violet-kittychick
@@tyrannozilla Like the same hey!! Like totally the same :)
I still can't believe how great this show was. The story, animation, characters are all top tier. I cannot wait for season 2.
Same man
I binged this only a couple of weeks ago: really enjoyed it. Good characters, great storyline. Just a very good series 👌
I really liked this show. It’s a proof that you can do
Content with an woke agenda and do it well, you just need talent and hard work.
I have started to se Arcane on Netflix and so far Arcane is also a good show
It was fantastic. So refreshing to see something good finally!
my only issue with the show is that i wanted it to be more grounded in its combat elements, yes i kbow it needs to have some fantastical elements for it to be entertaining for the normies but still felt abit too much, despite these flaws its still a great show in general and its rare for a netflix anime to be this good
edit: oh yes and spoilers the final ep felt ljke it had too much plot armor for someeee characters, you know the ones
@@jachyra9 bruh its just an opinion on fictional media.. why are you like this? besides whats wrong with wanting things? if u continue to demand and be complacent with mediocracy u will get mediocracy and thats why most media in general is garbayge
@@iavyy They're probably like that because you sound a little elitist, and as if you think you could make a better show. Even in your reply to them you're stating that since they didn't agree with you they must have mediocre taste. Not gonna win many friends with that attitude lol.
Critical Drinker set me on a path of watching it, and I agree, it was fantastic.
samesies. binged it in one day.
Glad u cover the show. I've watched it twice and I love it. Awesome show!!
Like this series.. it was awesome.. but it also made me cry so many times because I know what it is like to be a total unwanted social outcast.. I know.. I like live it!! To see the pain of this in a character but like also their desire to hide it to become invisible to the majority.. yeah I understand it hey!! Like this series pulls no punches and it literally shows all!! I stand with Mizu and her path to obtaining justice for who r_p-d her mother and made her and left her and her mother for dead!!
I am the daughter of a child pr-dat_r who made me with his adopted daughter at a very early age.. the proof of a very terrible crime!! I am the proof of a great crime and also a great injustice!! To hide the evidence I was illegally fostered out to people who mistreated me.. exposed me to things no child should see or be a part of and I was made to keep the secrets of the adult world they exposed me to at a very early age!! I still have nightmares and I barely sleep a few hours before I wake up just to like check if I am okay. Every day I feel the shame of what I am and I question if my soul is damned!!
This series has the courage to start to expose some of this bias and while it is set in the 1600's I can assure you the same bias is still very present today towards some people. Like I never chose to be what I am.. but I have paid for it my entire life!! I admire the courage it took to bring Mizu to the screen where her character starts to show how much it hurts to be someone like her!!
No doubt this comment will be deleted by the system or silenced in some way.. I am use to it.. but I had the courage to type it.. some of us don't even do that because of how shunned we are by this toxic and censored world we are now in!!
PS: Even if my soul is dammed.. I chose a life to help other people and do the right thing by them!! What is the harm in doing the right thing by everyone I can help.. even for some if they have 4 legs and a tail??
Yes, Mizu is such a fascinating character. The way she have internalized the abuse and made it a deep part of her identity, letting us see the deep, deep level on which it have harmed her. And how she develops in slow and subtle ways, for it is not easy, it really is not. And how her power becomes both a strength and a weakness due to how she hides herself behind it, stunting her development. It was really intriguing.
And hey, of course you are not damned, you are just you, like all of us :). Keep up the good work!
I don't think anything you say has happened to you.
@@baronnashor7713 That is why we don't bother telling people!! I know that I don't bother telling people or explaining my past and what I have survived!! I spent a year seeing a victims of crime counselor and many times she was in tears over what we would discuss!! Justice.. what a joke.. it is a word made up so a special class can have overpaid fancy jobs and titled where justice is often the least things they seek!! I am pleased you can sit high and mighty and accuse me of being a liar.. I am pleased because it means for someone like you that you have never been exposed to any of the stuff I have been and you have not been forced to survive it!! I envy your arrogance and that you have lived a life so free you can be arrogant about people like me.. survivors!! People like you are why we often don't say anything and just try to get on with our own lives as best as we can!!
I avoided this for quite some time because of Netflix. I've been through it twice now. I was very happy with it.
The trailer didn't do the show justice. I hope season 2 will be great.
@@tyrannozilla correct. I figured out that it was a female anti-hero from the trailer and rolled my eyes. My expectations were destroyed. What a great story they gave her.
I disagree i would say she was a Mary Sue. When the story introduced her husband i thought this would give the background for how she became such a formidable swordsman. However, when she easily defeats him then it left me wondering how did she learn all the skills necessary to defeat other swordsmen. Yes she saw other swordsman demonstrate their moves but that wouldn't have enabled her to learn how to actually fight and do the other stuff she did in the series. That my only complaint. Other than that I thought it was a good series and will watch the next season.
@@jachyra9 When I was younger I trained in Moo Duk Kwon (Korean Martial Art), some Tae Kwon Do, Northern Style Preying Mantis, Wing Chun and I tried my hand at Haidong GumDo (korean sword art) So I am somewhat familiar with martial arts training.
Wow finally a sane rational person lol. I thought the exact same thing when the back story of her husband was shown but noooope. She is just one of the best swordsman from watching random swordsman try out their new swords for like 5min lol.we dont even know if those swordsman were masters to begin with. To the end of the show all realism the show had went all out the window anyway.
For anyone who liked this, two other animated shows of equal quality I would recommend at Castlevania (and Castlevania Nocturne) and Invincible. Both are SUPERB in terms of stories, characters, animation and fighting scenes. The final episode of Castlevania is insane
I have one more episode to watch, I came across it randomly a few days a go. For me this has been one of the best animated series I have ever seen. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and can’t wait to see a season 2
I thought it was pretty alright. Their were some feats of strength that were a bit far fetched but they were not shy with letting her lose either. She takes a beating pretty often.I liked the main character actually wanted her to succeed
I’m guessing season 2 will spend at least some time showing us how Mizu managed to find and take down her first target, Violet. They left it extremely mysterious/vague in season 1 to the point where I initially thought I had missed an episode when I first started watching. I just think it’s made mysterious because it’ll be important later.
Pluto is also really good, especially if you're fond of sci-fi, should give it a try
Yeah I really enjoyed Pluto, so batshit crazy but wonderfully told story
This animation was brilliant...loved it....great story, characters and ofc the animation is beautiful
Glad you are giving this attention. Enjoying it now, half way thru and will definitely finish. I also recommend.
Good review. Happy New Year, Nate H!
I loved this show can’t wait for season 2
Amazing show! My only nitpick is that I would have liked the fight szenes to be a bit more realistic, but I understand the decision why it is not this way.
Yea, she's basically the terminator.. 😂
I think we all loved the end scene in the pilot!
Thanks for the recommendation. Just finished episode 1 and really enjoy it. Will definitely finish the whole series.
In the german voiceover mizu is voict by the same girl how does V in Cyberpunk 2077. perfect fit
Welcome to the club! Seen it weeks ago all of it
This show along with Arcane belong at the very top!
Finished that a couple days ago. Enjoyed it very much.
It was episode 4 that got me. Total shock. I thought it was very good. All the characters felt real and rounded.
I know what scene you mean! No spoilers though.
Agreed. I also binge watched this before Christmas and thought it was most excellent. This get's my approval.
Absolutely great show. Love it!
RIP Tom Wilkinson
Blue eyed samuri is a strong kick ass WAMAN!
Totally agree. Great writing, supported by beautiful visuals.
All I got from the trailers was "strong independent woman who don't need no man" protagonist and "white man bad". So I didn't even bother watching. Are you saying it's actually good?
Peaches! 😂 that cracked me up. I was initially turned off because yes the premise and the animation style. I'm actually debating of watching it again to dig back through the story more.
Where can you find it
OMG! Well written strong female characters, who'd have thought🤔
I like the way for no good reason she made a sword out of the meteorite that the master couldnt fathom to do
I really liked this l love this era of samurai
I’ve not seen it. But I watched The Critical Drinker’s review of it! 😊. So it’s a fair bet that it is as GREAT as you say Mr H. I hold you two as true standards. To the filter, of what is classed as great entertainment! 👍. While I’m here. May I also wish you all the best for the New Year! 😊 🎆
Love your reviews Mr.H. ;)
Question are you planning on doing reviews for both Castlevania : Nocturne and Captain Laserhawk : A Blood Dragon Remix ?
Let me give you a heads up - the latter one is great.
Cel shading used to be used quite afair bit in som videogames in the Noughties Sly Racoon Tazmania/som others
I enjoyed this show quite a bit, and I had all the same reservations from the trailer that you probably did. I also was very happy with the animation style. I strongly dislike the 3D that tries to look like 2D anime stuff that seems prevalent these days, but this show isn’t actually doing that. They did a great job of making this 3D animation look unique.
I've been pushing this series for a while now, and have gotten a chuckle from some if the pushback I've received from endorsing it.
I've been receiving feedback telling ne it's another girlboss shero series, which has left me asking two questions:
1) Did they actually watch the series?
2) If they did, are they simply projecting something that isn't there?
Because the protagonist certainly makes a lot if mistakes, and gets her backside handed to her multiple times, and at the hands of refreshingly compentent antagonists.
makes you wonder if Major Kusanagi would get mislabeled if GitS came out as a new IP nowadays
@@chris9206They are currently doing another GITS film it was confirmed last month
Genuinely the best thing I’ve seen all year.
Damn good show. Very interesting and authentic feeling characters. The series adds enough layers to everyone to make even the antagonists relatable on some level. Excellent world-building, engaging storytelling, and awesome action scenes. It’s visually appealing, beautifully animated, and actually elicits a lot of emotional investment in the ordeals being faced by both the main and secondary characters. The soundtrack is pretty great as well.
Looking forward to seeing season two!
Imagine if they re-imagine Samurai Jack like this.
So pleased a major reactor has reacted to Blue Eye Samurai.. I think it’s an amazing show .. it’s the next GOT
I love it! something good finally.
I for one thoroughly enjoyed it. rather immersive. look forward that hopefully they do a sequel. my favorite chtrs. Sword Father, and that Madame.
I’ve had a lot of strong recommendations for this show. I will have to check it out some day when I have time. 😂
BES was mesmerizing - we had to make a point to NOT binge it, it’s worth taking time between episodes to let what you’ve experienced soak in before watching the next one. It isn’t anime, which is fine, just because the setting is Edo-era Japan doesn’t mean it has to be anime. The animation is very good, breathtaking in spots, with some very well done action sequences. But none of that would matter if the story and writing didn’t measure up. It’s not perfect, some of the sex and violence is borderline salacious and excessive almost to point of being a distraction - like Game of Thrones when it’s at its most self-indulgent - and the writers do crank up the stereotypes to 11 at times but the flaws don’t detract from the overall goodness on the screen. The voice acting is indeed very good, my only negative is that Mizu wasn’t voiced quite as androgynously as I’d have preferred. I get that the big “secret” really wasn’t all that secret to the audience but a slightly different take on Mizu’s sound would’ve made the suspension of disbelief easier to achieve. Not a big deal, a minor point really. If people are skipping this because they perceive it as conveying “The Message” they’re doing themselves a real disservice - BES does send a message but it does it by telling us a story, not delivering a sermon.
I would recommend Scavengers Reign on max
I'm glad to hear this especially with some of the random bits of hatred that popped out. So its definitely ghost chasing from the sounds of it. I'll have to check it out sometime next month.
Nice way to invalidate other's opinions.
@@DeanAdventure How so? Some people assumed Wonka was bad yet it wasn't. I have heard actual ghost chasing on this show though as it's "woke" because the Japanese hated foreigners. If you know some history then yes the Japanese mostly loathed foreigners roughly around that time. Heck a fair amount of Anime do share that history lesson especially when it comes to Nobunaga, which he was one of the few Japanese figures that embraced the West. Yes its a good idea to call out the BS as it keeps everyone honest.
It was simply beautiful- fantastic
Glad Netflix actually reviewing it
I loved it I cant wait to see the next season
great show, Is it the same team who did "Arcane"?
Watched this after a Drinker recommends, excellent watch 👍👍
I absolutely loved the show. Having said that, a Samurai was a social class. She is definitely not a Samurai. It would be better titled blue eyed swordsman or warrior. She is that. I get tired of how loose people are with the term. They were land owning warriors who served the shogun
@jachyra9 good point. I do remember her doing that now. It probably is unfair to put that show in with a crowd of others. I just see that term thrown around about as much as viking.
I really enjoyed it. It is more than what I expected.
Awesome amazing samurai hit...
Ignore 50+ years of samurai media from Japan like wild west engulfed the same era in America...
Compared to the other samurai anime that also came out on the same day, this is probably the better in terms of storywise.. But overall i find it to be a bit draggy towards reaching the end of the season but for an original series its still pretty decent..
I am impressed, just wish Netflix stop using the word anime onto everything that isn’t anime
Thoroughly enjoyed this series!! That's bloody rare for me nowadays, so I gave 5 stars on RT.
First Arcane, now the Blue Eye Samurai. The French animators are the best out there at the moment. Who would have thought :)
The French have made a good bit of Anime like shows over the years. It's good to hear that they're still producing good shows.
strong recommendation? True and based
Loved it, action, music, artwork, character development was amazing and I'm not animation fan but I did like Arcane.
This was an AMAZING show. Loved it. Music was banging too
People don't hate string female characters. They hate BAD writing and people who think they're above criticism.
It’s my new GOT 😊😊
It's better than GOT ever was.
Absolute banger!
I'm hoping she has a bad guy mentor next season, as she's kind of a bad person!
But you still want her to win and she's just so damned cool!
I just can't figure out how Ringo does things. It makes no sense. Otherwise it's great.
What are your thoughts on Pluto if you've seen it?
Pluto is a masterpeice.
I loved it. One of the best (un-official) Asimov stories of all time. It was also shocking to find out that it was based on an Astro-Boy story. Now I want to delve more into Astro-Boy because of Pluto I actually got into Blue Eye Samurai because of Pluto as well. The reason for this is that Samurai was one of the recommendations on Pluto's IMDB page. After that, I viewed the trailer. I was curious about it, but my Mom thought the show was going to be terrible because of the trailer (it was that bad to her). She decided to give the show a chance for me and we didn't regret it. We watched the show over the span of nearly a week (didn't binge watch till the last two episodes. I'm not a big fan of binge watching). I'm considering watching both shows again soon because there are still a lot of details that I missed and would like to spot them.@@Barbarian75
I really enjoyed Pluto. Mental batshit craziness but loved it
That's awesome to hear. I would love to see you review it sometime.@@MrHReviews
My one complaint about the show was the flashback with the mom and the horse breeder. It felt out of place, jarring, and a bit tapped on. It's like she just gave up on all her training, mission, and let her mom marry her off.
She was against it at first, but her mom (who wasn’t her real mom, but a maid) guilted her into it by threatening to go back to prostitution. The marriage started out pretty rough, but as time went on, Mizu was able to slowly adjust to the role. She and Mikio even started to fall in love with other. Until she completely emasculated him in a sparring match. It wasn’t out of place at all. It actually shows us the final ingredient to what set her in her path as the poem suggested.
There are two left.
I loved it
I have seen a few reviewers that I trust like Mr H give their approval to this series and I cannot understand why?. Now there is some good aspects the animation is beautiful the villain is decent but everything else terrible. Mizu teaches herself the sword by watching Samurai making cuts with swords the smith has made thats annoys me beyond belief. So she has no training then fights a whole dojo and defeats all the men there. She is a mary sue cannot see why anyone accepts the premise. As for her blue eyes that is genetically impossible unless her mother had a blue eyed ancestor.
🙄
Shocked as how mr h and critical drinker just over looked that. She does not have any real fighting experience,no real fighting style but posseses what can only be explained as...super natural? Her knowledge of things are also questionable, she stayed with that old swordsmith so where would she get all this information from?
@@marlin1846 they are both ultimately libertarians. They don't have a moral problem with anti white messages in their stories, only that it inconveniences their enjoyment.
The kaji lady left a bad taste in my mouth.
I know it's irrelevant but from what you said she's not a samurai, but a ronin. Just some piece of curio.
I liked the series too but i cant help noticing the spike in feminist points in the latter episodes. Almost like they did it on purpose knowing that you’ve already watched all the episodes. Still good series though.
Hurry up season 2
It was amazing, but I fear that we might be in a downward spiral for season 2. I won't spoil it but I feel like season 2 will be jumping between character subplots that have no effect on eachother.
Watched it, enjoyed it. But the prude that I'm becoming in my older years, it really did not need the sexual contant in it, it only had to sugest it. Minor nudity would have been enough.
It's not any of the white males who gave her the blue eyes, it's her mother (european female getting involved with the wrong japanese guy). But at least we have 3 more seasons of her slashing through baddies untills she figures it out. At least I hope for 3 more seasons of this pure awesomeness before I can say "I told you so".
Yeah, Fowler hinted he knows who her real mother is
One of the greatest series I’ve ever seen, the character development and arches are amazing. To me the only thing that didn’t land was the ending, just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Additionally, I found the castle obstacle course a bit lack lustre, at no point did I feel for her safety and felt she breezed through it a little too easily. But fuck, what a show, only nitpicking because I watch some much critical analysis of media from you cynical Yotubers and now I notice everything!
So much*
Finally man you reviewed this show. I had given up hope 😂😂. I think it's as good as arcane
Uf, that's not good. Arcane is garbage
rare, it is great.
Think my only small nitpicks were some music with metallica felt a little out of style with genre and slightly cringy to me, then I didn't like they added handicapped individual where it didn't really feel authentic because he was basically acting as if he had hands most the time. Like how is he able to eat with chopsticks with no hands using arms, normal people I feel as if when I see people without arms or hands are usually forced into using feet instead for those things. So felt a little virtue signaling to me that part, when they didn't actually make the person feel authentic. But other than that I really enjoyed the show too.
I once served with a guy in the army of my country who had a prosthetic leg, his having been taken off by a mine while in Afghanistan.
He was still able to meet universality of service, and continue as a combat engineer. It wasn't easy, but he adjusted to it because he wanted it badly enough.
You'd be surprised what people can adapt to when they have the willpower to deal with adversity.
@@grandmufftwerkin9037 I know, not saying they can't either just way show goes about it doesn't feel authentic. Like he at once point holds some chopsticks with the tip where hands supposed to be attacked which is basically just a round fleshy area. Kinda wish they would have treated it a bit more serious and made it feel more authentic as it would also felt more like he had a journey growth, opposed to him basically acting as if he had hands all the time in all situations.
I liked it overall but I had a big problem with the story.
SPOILER ALERT!!!
After she finds out the woman who raised her wasn't her mother, that should've changed her goal. That revelation meant that she has no idea whats going on. As far as she knows her mother couldve been white and her father japanese. But she was still out to kill her father because she was told he violated her mother. Am i missing something?
Dont question things i guess, like how she became a swords master
I have yet to see the series but revenge can be flawed in the East. Flawed as in the whole story isn't given at the beginning and the hero is far from morally stable, which Oldboy is one of those examples. Nonetheless at that time foreigners are essentially demons to most Japanese outside of a few very like Oda Nobunaga, which mixed races were basically exiles.
I still can’t believe this show was made in the west, and it actually gave us Strong Female Characters that were done right.
Why do you feel the need to point that out? Could it be subtle brainwashing?
Yeah, I've heard good things about this show.
Great show, had its faults but not many.
really now....... the only non objectionable men in this ......one had no hands........ the other was blind.......every weakness of the mind of men was shone a fat spotlight on... women are perfect all around........the only objectionable woman is the mother, who for the good of the child pretends to be murdered..........and its never even brought up -------- nah......
you say shes not a mary sue.. and yes, she gets injured.. but it has ZERO effekt on her-.- she gets her heel stabbed through in one occasion...and 3 minutes later runs like there is no prob at all... at that point.. why even injure her...
@@jachyra9 gotta love how the loud minority hating on this show has the same boneheaded argument about Mary Sues and “woke agenda” and I can tell this one didn’t watch the show. Because none of the women there perfect at all. Especially Mizu and Akemi.
