Hey folks! It has been brought to my attention that the talented Jim Davis is widely considered to be the originator of the non-budget build of this list. I somehow missed his original article on it, but I want to link it here: www.starcitygames.com/articles/37015_My-Heart-Says-Adeliz-The-Cinder-Wind-But-My-Head-Says.html Decklist creation and ownership is always a stressful thing for us content creators. In this instance, I wasn’t aware Jim originated this list. I had seen a few lists on mtggoldfish doing well and ran a Kaladesh-less build on Arena. It did just fine without Spirebluffs and Shock, so I tried it out on MTGO and had the same positive results. I saw almost all the deck cost was tied up in those lands, so i traded out a few cards like Siren Stormcallers for Riddleform and began playing with a budget tech. I saw a few other techs on different variations, but the lists were different enough that I figured it was just an archetype already, so i figured mine would be the budget build as you know I like to bring you affordable lists. You should also go check out the fantastic work of my friends who did other variations of the deck below: Strictly Better MTG: ua-cam.com/video/f4E1aYwIlnM/v-deo.html Eric Froelich's Wizard Prowess Article: www.channelfireball.com/articles/deck-of-the-day-u-r-wizard-prowess/ and Magic Aids Modern version which is something I've been thinking a lot about since seeing his video: ua-cam.com/video/4a6EPotBedw/v-deo.html
I think a several thousand of us have been thinking Wizard/Prowess tribal since Wizard's Retort and Wizard's Lightning were spoiled. Once Adeliz hit the mix, this was an inevitability. Clearly WotC *wanted* this deck to happen; I think it's probably at least one of the reasons they re-reprinted Opt after just having reprinted it. You did a very nice job of putting together a seriously budget version of the deck. Anyone who thinks you had to rip off another deckbuilder for this idea doesn't have a very creative mind to begin with. Keep up the good work, Prof!
interestingly I threw together something similar a week ago that was more of a wizard counter burn strategy using adeliz, baral, and instant speed interaction. tappedout.net/mtg-decks/wwwyzzerdddek/
that card is made for it´s flavour text - also for draft purposes / tolarian scholar has the word "wizard" in it´s creature type, so it allows for some interactions in draft. and it´s a 2/3, which lets it survive some attacks and kill some stuff
Thanks so much for this, prof. In about a week, I'm turning 17 and will finally be able to drive after 11, so I can stay late for Standard at my LGS. I've been looking for a fun deck that doesn't cost a fortune, isn't too easy or difficult to run, and will perform well. This deck is perfect for me, and I really appreciate your effort on decks and videos like these. Keep it up!
An interesting list! I've always been a fan of tribal as well as decks that aren't considered Mainstream! I love seeing a Wizard Tribal that can actually compete in standard! Thanks for the video. What's nice is that it's also possible to upgrade this deck as well. As I've heard mentioned, Siren Stormtamer is a great option for the deck, as it flies and protects your board, all for the low cost of one blue. Plus they're less than a dollar each!
Thanks for making this Professor. I looked in my collection and I actually already have most of these cards. I already have 3x Adeliz, The Cinder Wind from pre-release events and drafts. With the cards I already had, the deck ended up costing me $18. That is a price for Standard I am fine with.
Update. I tweaked the deck some and went 2W-2L at Standard Showdown. I was able to get into the top 9 and won a Standard Showdown pack! We had 21 players. My modifications were probably less than ideal against control decks and I faced two control decks. I took out Riddleform which probably hurt my deck against control and Fumigate.
You just made me want to get back into Standard with this deck. I'm a Jeskai player so I love seeing any deck with 2 of my favorite colors in them. Great video. :)
As a person who had made the switch to Modern and EDH a while back, I cobbled together this build since I had the Spirebluff Canals and Sulfur Falls already laying about. It's been fun bolting people in Standard again.
I like how a lot of the Hazoret Challenger deck can go into this deck. Both roughly the same price as well. But having Chandra in this deck would bring obscene power to the deck!Keep u-p the great videos!
I tried this deck at FNM yesterday! I put in a playset of Merfolk Tricksters though, she's a super useful card AND a wizard, so it synergizes well. Would've gone 2-1 if I didn't make a foolish play mistake. This deck ANNIHILATES vehicle decks, which I beat round 1. Just melt their crews when they get played, and the vehicles sit on the field not doing anything. Thanks prof!
Just built this deck in the Arena Beta and other than lacking Shock it is really solid on there! I subbed in 2 Dual Shot and 2 Magma Spray. They can't go to the dome but DS is really good against all the 1/1 vampire tokens. Also with the Soulscar Mage it's great for debuffing the enemy team. Thanks for the deck tech, Prof!
Holy crud! Ive been trying to spend most of what i can on my commander deck! But have been wanting to play with wizards and standard lately :0 thx so much prof!
I love how on dominaria release I was playing something very similar to this because it was something new and I have the cards to play then about a week to two weeks later at least four or five people in my lgs is playing this similar deck and it's because they were asking me what I suggest and they also watch this video that of which I finally got around to watching took what you suggested to upgrade mine but not a whole lot.
This is tearing it up in Magic Arena, thank you! Unfortunately it's just about as difficult to build as anything else since wildcards are so rare, but solid build! I approve!
Thank you for the list. I'm still so new that I don't want to build my own deck yet. This looks like it will be fun and I should get lots of play out of it. Seem's like money well spent!
Hey Prof, I have some friends who are starting playing and love this colors! Great video for help them play something good they might enjoy, thanks and great work as always!
I did this when I started magic a couple weeks ago! Blue is my favorite color, and I really like playing alternate win conditions in other games like burn, so I made this, but out of Dominaria cards only 😅 Super budget, but I'm slowly adding stuff to it
Wow, great video and great deck! I haven't really played MTG since Eldritch Moon, but this deck is SO right up my favourite playstyle that I might have to grt back into standard soon...
for this deck, I always need some more draw. I added two Heiroglific Illumination just so I had another way to fill up my hand when the cards ran out. This is a fantastic decklist and I can't wait to try it out at FNM. Its awesome on MTGO so far.
This is a pretty solid decklist, tbh. Only changes I really made were removing Abrade entirely, dropping one each of Shock, Adeliz, and Lightning Strike, and adding 2 each of Wizard's Retort and The Mirari Conjecture. The deck feels a little safer with the counterspells in it, and having spell recursion/duplication effects makes up for dropping a few kill spells.
This list seems fun. It reminds me of the Budget Mono Red that Saffron Olive built last year and eventually evolved in to the Ramunap Red top tier deck. Gonna try it.
I run a very similar build and the biggest problem is running out of gas. You can easily be hellbent by turn 3 or 4. I recommend adding a little more card draw. Curious Obsession, Chart a Course, or maybe a Memorial to Genius for the longer games. Regardless, it is indeed super fun to play!
Green blue assembly worker historic, running four self assembler and four mishra's self replicator. It uses control and reaction like heroic intervention to survive as it creates an army of cheapened replicators using mana rocks and historic synergies
Hi Prof, I love your videos and your recurring theme of inclusivity and tolerance in the Magic community. Also your fair and balanced criticism of products, as well as of situations where one may act in a fairer, more considerate way. In that spirit, I wanted to mention that in the opening of this video, the gag of not knowing how to correctly pronounce somebody's name (fictional character notwithstanding) and playing it for a chuckle resonates in sometimes a not-so-subtle way with those of us with non-anglo names. This mild slight still managed to knock me off track of watching the video and on to this tangent. To be clear, in Magic there are so many made up names and creatures, of course it's a bit of a free for all. But a human character with a name that sounds culturally ambiguous but not unrecognizably alien, someone might identify with that character in a positive way. Better, I think, an honest attempt at a pronunciation based on your best estimation, than comic relief. We of the hard-to-pronounce names thank you. Keep up the excellent work!
I have a homebrew that’s similar, except instead of Ghitu, Pathmaker initiate and Tetsuko thrown in. Have Warlord’s fury sideboard, but it’s a combat trick deck where you cast all the spells after declare blockers step. Built to smash and run amok, funny to see the reaction of your opponent when you can slam an 11 power unblockable down turn 4 occasionally. Besides what’s on the list, divedown is a good card for combat tricks style because it can save from removal. spell pierce and rescue are good sideboard
I have a tetsuko win strategy deck too I made. got some ovalchase dragsters and combat celebrent in there too to try and give me twice the turn when I have all unblockables... control killed me though because i didnt have counterspells in my sideboard
I'd suggest Bomat Courier for this. It seems too risky for many, but in a burn-style deck like this it's just fine. The chance to fill your hand up after you've emptied it on turn three is really powerful and it can make some tough decision making for your opponents removal. In addition you might consider Tetsuko Uwezama, his ability can mean your wizards attack unblocked allowing you to push the prowess triggers until the damage step of combat. Very cool deck, one I might put together for myself!
In fact, Uwezama can let you win on turn four: Turn 1 play Soul-Scar Mage, turn 2 play Spellweaver Eternal, turn 3 Adeliz, turn 4 Uwezama then attack with all your dudes unblockable and throw two Wizard's Lightning after blocks to put twenty on your opponent.
Love the deck tech! I would say a budget deck tech of $100.00 on mono green stompy! No money really on mana base and it's a classic build for MTG and fun for FNM.
Im continually surprised that no content creators are going against the grain as far as the color pie with wizards, especially with Naban. Esper has Champion of Wits and Sunscourge Champion, two of the best Etb triggers in standard for wizards, as well as Dreamstealer, a menace creature that duresses the opponent based on its power. And all three are eternalize creatures, coming back as 4/4s. Run a pair of Search for Azcanta, the wizard counterspell, hell, even a couple God-Pharaoh Faithful to gain life. I even played this with a GPG package with Crested Sunmare as a finisher. Granted its more midrange but this deck folds to a well timed wrath or huge chunk of lifegain.
I love the deck idea for prowess. With the return of saplings, how about a token deck? Swinging at your opponent's face with a ton of tokens never fails!
If you did a Nicol Bolas EDH deck, I would be eternally grateful 🙏🏻 I’m still in early stages of just putting a list together AND keeping it under $100...for now. I’m leaning towards a mostly zombie tribal but with other cards from Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation that Embalm or produce zombie tokens in some other manner. Thanks for all you do for us fans Professor 🖖🏻
Hello , Please make a video "is it worth to buy the commander anthology II " , I think many of us would really appreciate it ! Thanks anyway for the support you provide to the mtg community worldwide :D
Either a GpG deck, or izzet control, using the very affordible locust god as a finisher as well as options on adding in the phioneox which if used as a blocked gets around nearly all removal in the format. (Seal away is annoying) generally you win through locust god tokens. Pull from tomorrow after a locust god is amazing.
I just got back into standard..... spent like 300 on U/W xD it is super fun though, I love all of the big baddies to swing in with. and teferi is just nasty. gives you the chance to just always have an answer back
Have you thought about U/B Rat Colony wit Tetsuko Umezawa? Tetsuko says creature with power or toughness can't be blocked, and the rats are 2/1 that don't gain toughness. Use the blue for counter spells to protect your rats and you can win pretty fast
The word play is always appreciated. I was wondering whether you had considered "Crash Through" from Hour of Devastation for the deck, 1 or 2 tops obviously. You said that you were running Warlord's Fury to get by attackers, and I got to thinking "that's what trample does best"! Just a thought. I saw the Silver Wind and automatically wanted to run it as a commander for a brawl deck, but didn't have the cards to back it up. I did however get a Hallar, the Firefletcher that looked capable of doing great things on a low budget. I would love to see your take on a brawl/standard deck featuring that legend. I haven't gone to play at an LGS this year yet, but I have been sporting my TCC pin to work on my suit every Wednesday. It completes the look.
Hi Professor, I'd like to see a sneaky deck built around Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive. Lots of high power, 1 toughness creatures and spells giving them hexproof or pumping them after blocks are (not) declared. There are a few creatures with either 1 strength or 1 toughness that do stuff when dealing combat damage to players, and a number of white creatures who are 3/1 and can strike out of nowhere thanks to Tetsuko. I'm curious to see what you come up with!
I actually went against this deck in the last FNM. I ran saprolings and he sided in a Chainwhirler. Best decision he made. So maybe include that in the side if your store shows token strats
I would replace Ghitu lavarunner with the Siren stormtamer. So you have more space for boosting the wizards and instant/Sorcery with naru meha, master wizard. Also go down to 2 copies of Adeliz cinder wind.
So glad to see a deck tech from proff. My favorite was metalwork colussus. Prof, any way of having a deck with the cool 10/10 now that we have gilded lotus?
I know I may be late but I play the same kind of deck based on precognition field, and a lot of draw cards as well as the 4 rile to give my creatures trample, and I play other creatures as Maru and the dean, (I cannot remember their name atm) to pop of basically giving my board double prowess from adeliz and Dean and if they already have prowess +3/+3 per cast of an instant or sorcery, mine at the moment is tuned for the after rotation in my attempt to not spend to much pre rotation even though it won't cost much, so it leaning more so towards playing cards like primal amulet to reduce the cost of precognition targets and the extra "pop off" potential
Hey folks! It has been brought to my attention that the talented Jim Davis is widely considered to be the originator of the non-budget build of this list. do the powerstone shard combo
It’s a pretty straightforward list with a lot of obvious combos, a lot of people are creating very similar decks. I wouldn’t worry about it at all :)

Hey professor please showcase more vids of you playing mtg whether it be at events or online. Id love to watch you go to work!
Just went undefeated at Standard Showdown with this. Thanks for the build Professor!
But but why not include Tolarian Scholar?
that card is made for it´s flavour text - also for draft purposes / tolarian scholar has the word "wizard" in it´s creature type, so it allows for some interactions in draft. and it´s a 2/3, which lets it survive some attacks and kill some stuff
Yeah! I think Tolaria Scholar is a must in this deck.
The Tolarian Scholor is too busy PLAYING the deck.
a 2/3 for 3 with no abilities.... yeah we do have too much better options here.
Tiago Barbosa Cof Cof "sarcasm"
"izzet a blast?" You really are a dad
I got 4 adeliz, the cinder wind inside my prerelease, one of them being promo.
Guess I'm a wizard now.
OOM- 32 YOU'RE A WIZARD OOM!
deep inside, you always were a wizard :)
You're a wizard 'arry!
I just bought 4 Adeliz for like 0.5$.
@@JMSginoclave, you beat me to the punch.

With an affinity for Izzet, I love the creativity behind this deck tech! Keep up the great content, Prof!
WHERE IS YOUR SCARAB GOD NOW?!?!
Still in the Command Zone.
More like Locust God.
Hahaha, I lol'd pretty good at that one!
on my battlefield where I drain you four 9 because of Josu Vess
A kicked Josu AND a Scarab God before turn 5? I don't think even Magic Christmas Land could make that play...
As a person who had made the switch to Modern and EDH a while back, I cobbled together this build since I had the Spirebluff Canals and Sulfur Falls already laying about. It's been fun bolting people in Standard again.
I’ve been looking for a deck to build to get back into standard. And I love me some tribal. Definitely gonna give this a look. Thanks Professor!
I really hope to see a fun Standard deck that centres around Champion of the Flame and Valduk, Keeper of the Flame.
Lester Lim I second this
I like how a lot of the Hazoret Challenger deck can go into this deck. Both roughly the same price as well. But having Chandra in this deck would bring obscene power to the deck!Keep u-p the great videos!

I have been playing a modified version of this on MTG Arena, this deck is awesome, thank you Prof!
I love this!!!!!! It's a budget standard deck!
I just made this deck last week! Glad to see the Professor affirming my choice. :-)
Holy crud! Ive been trying to spend most of what i can on my commander deck! But have been wanting to play with wizards and standard lately :0 thx so much prof!

I've been interested in this archetype since HOU. I am glad to see it's receiving some love
You're the best Prof, teacher of the year
This is tearing it up in Magic Arena, thank you!
Thank you so much i wanted to get back in to magic after not playing for almost a year. I already own all the cards except the ones from the new sets.
As someone who bought a box of hour or devastation and dominaria, I have most of these cards already so this looks great and super fun!
dude this decktech is awesome
+Gene Franklin Faith my friend
Gene Franklin read the description millennial
Love your deck techs! Budget and non budget! They're great! Wouldn't mind seeing more :)
I did this when I started magic a couple weeks ago!
Blue is my favorite color, and I really like playing alternate win conditions in other games like burn, so I made this, but out of Dominaria cards only 😅
Super budget, but I'm slowly adding stuff to it
Wow, great video and great deck!
I love that you make decks affordable and fun. Magic should be affordable and fun, if more people could play the game would improve.
I just got beaten by this deck in the final round, while I played a modified version of Second Sun Control Challenger Deck. So I can say this works!
Hogwarts: the Deck.
6:04 “Izzit a blast?” I love that line
Ah... you posted a video on this deck. That explains why I'm seeing so many of these tonight in arena.
This is the video that made me buy cards again. I love Izzet colored instants matter decks.
I will try this deck in Arena, I will just remove shock for the counterspell. Looks super fun. Thanks Prof.
awsome to see a deck that doesn't cost more than it's worth! It'd be great to see a tech on a Relentless Rats deck, too!
Green blue assembly worker historic, running four self assembler and four mishra's self replicator. It uses control and reaction like heroic intervention to survive as it creates an army of cheapened replicators using mana rocks and historic synergies
This deck is so good that I play this list for 5 years and I always go at least Top 8 on my locals.
These budget standard videos are amazing

Best Dominara wizards tribal deck I've seen so far at a reasonable value

Modern Jeskai Control! I already know how to play it but I want to hear the prof talk about it!
I'd suggest Bomat Courier for this. It seems too risky for many, but in a burn-style deck like this it's just fine. The chance to fill your hand up after you've emptied it on turn three is really powerful and it can make some tough decision making for your opponents removal. Love the deck tech! I would say a budget deck tech of $100.00 on mono green stompy! No money really on mana base and it's a classic build for MTG and fun for FNM.
Im continually surprised that no content creators are going against the grain as far as the color pie with wizards, especially with Naban. I would love to see a Mardu Vehicles deck tech for standard, and/or a Mono-black Gary deck for pauper.
Hello ,
Please make a video "is it worth to buy the commander anthology II " , I think many of us would really appreciate it !
Thanks anyway for the support you provide to the mtg community worldwide :D
My buddy and I have been trying to construct a good wizard deck for him. Thanks for the vid
I like this, but I think that Enigma Drake Fling is still my favorite Izzet deck. I would love to see you do a deck tech of that!
Prof: I run something similar but with siren stormtamer, baral, and chart a course. If your budget is unlimited, mox Amber fits in nicely!
I've been playing a very similar deck over the last couple weeks. It's a legit deck and I highly recommend it. It plays way above it's price tag.
Doing UR wizards in modern, love it!
Thanks Prof., I've been needing a new standard deck. Great vid.
P.S. I don't know how to say Adeliz either
I will have to try this deck! Thank you for a budget deck.
Id like to see a video on a budget muldrotha deck focusing on graveyard recurrence and effects
I played a version of this at fmn with vance's blasting cannons, worked great
I just got back into standard..... spent like 300 on U/W xD it is super fun though, I love all of the big baddies to swing in with. and teferi is just nasty. gives you the chance to just always have an answer back
Auras!! I've seen both Izzet and Jeskai, but I'd love to see your approach on the deck tech
Have you thought about U/B Rat Colony wit Tetsuko Umezawa? Tetsuko says creature with power or toughness can't be blocked, and the rats are 2/1 that don't gain toughness. Use the blue for counter spells to protect your rats and you can win pretty fast
Amazing video, Prof!
It would be awsome if you do a Modern Green and Black. Great work with your channel!!
Brew up some Goblins for modern Prof.! We got some new tools for it in Dominaria and I'd love to see your take on it.
It would be nice to see a deck based around knights and some of the new saga cards kind of like a uw control but with an aggro finish :)
Thanks a bunch, prof! Been wanting to play UR Wizards. Great deck and video! Can we see a deck tech on Traxos?
WB Vampires. Playing it in MTG arena at the moment and it is a blast
Great video looks like a fun affordable deck. Would like to see a deck tech on "Sun of a Lich"
"Izzet a blast?"
I see you professor... Nice. XD
I would replace Ghitu lavarunner with the Siren stormtamer. So you have more space for boosting the wizards and instant/Sorcery with naru meha, master wizard. Also go down to 2 copies of Adeliz cinder wind.
“Izzet” a blast? Can’t wait to go back to Ravnica!
For the new set you could try Karn's Temporal Sundering deck build, for those old school extra turns days. Lol
I'd love to see a deck involving Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive and Rat Colony.
I ran something very much like this last fmn, was really bad. Hopefully your changes improves this
So glad to see a deck tech from proff. My favorite was metalwork colussus. Prof, any way of having a deck with the cool 10/10 now that we have gilded lotus?
I would totally like to see a deck tech that centers around phyrexian mana!
been playtesting a variation of this which includes flame of keld and i recon is a must have, removing shocks for them, at this point 2 max
I would be interested in your deck list if you care to share
Thank you! This was a very fun video!
I'd love to see you try out a modern u/b mill deck!
never seen this deck before but watching while playing mtg arena and i face this exact deck talk about coincidence
I want to see a Teferi Brawl deck!!
I'd love to see a deck tech for Red/White equipment style deck
I’d love to see you do a deck tech on saprolings
