In Ghanaian tradition, funeral donations are made to help the bereaved family defray the cost of organizing the funeral. Donations are announced in public for accountability and also as a matter of 'public record' that you helped so that the bereaved will also donate a similar amount to you when you are also breaved. Additionally, some donations are also given secretly to the bereaved, by friends and colleagues at work sometimes: away from the extended family and the public to help them deal with their loss.
Just to clear the air on public declaration of funeral donations. As far as I know this practice resonates with Akan people. The other tribes like Ga-Adangmes, Ewes and what not don't make public declaration of funeral contributions. So it is not a "tradition" in it simplistic term. It is a "tradition" of the Akan people for most part. I hope this helps. Regards Gabby.
Per my own experience in Ukraine , Russia and United Kingdom Nigerians are also very welcoming people and always ready to help and connect you , they will show you where to get things , jobs. I got my first job in Uk through a Nigerian. In Russian as student it was Nigerians who actually welcomed me as first year medical student. They just incredible people. All my best friends are in Nigeria now as Doctors.
You are right whenever Ghanaians meets Nigerians abroad we are brothers and sisters. That’s how we treat each other. We are like a family helping each other to settle in. I don’t know about when they meet in Africa back home because maybe they don’t know that Ghanaians and Nigerians are like a family everywhere you go outside Africa.
Funeral donations in ghana are as old as the republic itself. It is a voluntary way that the community pulls together to bury their dead to lessen the financial burden on the bereaved family. I don’t believe it’s any different from the western Go Fundme fund raiser that l see daily with funeral announcements here in the ‘west “.
The essence of the donations at funerals is to support the bereaved family give a befitting burial to their love one who is dead. Funerals in Ghana can be expensive indeed. Funeral celebrations are seem as a celebration of life in the Ghananian culture- a way of saying a final goodbye to a beloved one.
They announce it so the family will know that person came to sympathise..cos so many people comes to the funeral and it’s difficult for the family to identify each sympathiser...note that they keep record of every donation so they could thank them for coming to mourn with them
Archibong sounds like you hail from Akwa Ibom or Cross River state. Your guest is a cool guy. Both of you look like models, very healthy and good looking.
Trotro usually have conductors that take the transport fares during the journey & they tell the Driver when to stop 🛑 for people to get down or board the bus. However there are other buses 🚌 which may have AC or not that travel long distances- you buy tickets 🎟 before you board those buses.
Just as you said, the reason why people donate and declare the money in public is to, 1. Show your presence and let the affected person know you supported. 2. For accountability sake. 3. To help easy the financial burden of the affected.
This work is not easy. You ask five questions in one so the initial question which is a very good question is missed. The interviewee did his best. Good job to both of you just ask a single question at a time and maybe write down the others popping in your head.
@@bluebeatricearchibong You are welcome. Also, plan your interviews. Don’t worry if it’s going to be too long because you can always cut it into 2-3 parts. Why will you loose such an opportunity. 1. Did you feel like you will be kidnapped? 2. What do you think about the constant light 3. Did you feel at any time that you were in Nigeria? 4. Do you feel Ghana is a place you can stay? 5. Why have you stayed in Ghana this long? 6. Any plans to go back? 7. Have you gotten into trouble with police or anyone 8. Do you get scared when you go out at night? 9. Do you have to renew your stay every 90 days 10. How difficult was it for you to find accommodations? Viewer please add more questions so she can ask next time
They normally declare the amount so as the family will be aware of their contributions although their names will also be written in a book which contains the names of other contributors. After the funeral they will call them one by one to thank them using the book as a reference.
Ghanaians help the bereaved families defray costs of their dead ones and the funeral organisation and others. The announcement helps to recognize the donors and appreciate them and also helps with accountability.
@23:16 answer to your question. Funerals are very expensive and rarely people prepare for the cost side of conducting a funeral and burying a loved one. Ghanaians love to burden share the cost of organizing and hosting a funeral. Yes, they also want to be opened and transparent when monies are being donated towards funeral expenses, hence, the open declaration or announcement of who donated how much, so that we hold everyone honest and accountable. Some people may still choose to give to a bereaved family member secretly, if they don’t want to make a scene of it. This happens when they only know that family member and he or she is the only reason they came to the funeral and don’t know anybody else.
In Ghana people donate for funneral just to support your funneral activities. Because most Ghanaian are family oriented people you support the deceased same will be done to you.
The funeral donation custom is to raise funds to support the deceased persons family to contribute to the cost of the funeral and any residual funds to support the widow/widower/children. It’s the last sign of respect afforded to the deceased.
