  • Viminacium Serbia - An amazing Roman city and military camp - Viminacium Archaeological Park
Viminacium is 90 minutes east of Belgrade (Serbia), along the Danube River. Archaeological excavations of Viminacium began in 1882. However, despite over a century of work, only an estimated 4% of the site has been explored. As one of the largest settlements in the region, it is expected that there is still a lot more to be discovered. Currently, the archaeological site covers an area of 450 hectares (1,100 acres) and includes remains of temples, streets, squares, theatres, palaces, hippodromes, and Roman baths. In a separate building is housed one million-year-old skeleton of a mammoth and five partially preserved mammoths. There is a shop and coffee place. The guide we had was excellent. Do visit if you get a chance and enjoy natural history. It's well worth a visit.

If this site was located in Italy it would be visited by 100.000s of tourists monthly and be played in National Geographic all the time, however since it is in Serbia all those locations are downplayed which is totally unfair! Viminatium was very important Roman town and one of the rare well kept settlements for archeological discoveries that are still going on even today. Artifacts found are often unique and even graves in many cases untouched which is fascinating. Sad how Serbia was always placed out of the map despite most of the Roman emperors were actually born on its territory and not in Italy.

A popular nickname for a Boy in Serbia is Misho and depending on the grammatical case it can be Misha. :) I think it came from Moesia.
