Baba Yaga is an ambiguous character in Russian and Slavic lore. In some tales, she is the villain, other tales, she is the helper. And in this film, she appears as both, which is a good testament to the original lore. She initially appears to be wicked, but turns out to be good. She is really well written.
Baba Yaga is actually considered a neutral entity in Russian folklore. It all depends on her disposition if she'll help you or keep you as an eternal slave or eat you for supper. Right?
Andrea sure knows how to do a showstopper! I'm actually here because she is playing Prudy Pingelton in NBC's Hairspray LIVE this December. PS, Bartok's comedy may be old school but still has the charm even if I was scared by Anastasia as a kid.
A witch's life is very solitary No one around to talk to but trees So many years of never making merry But I can feel a change in the breeze 'Cause tonight there's no one in the hallway No one left or right But my hallways all say Someone's in my house tonight! No one by my fire No one sipping tea My fire's burning higher Someone's in my house with me!! Witches are people with a magic intuition And she's having a feeling that is oh so bewitching Even though no one's hanging around in the kitchen We know that someone is near Dear! No one in the attic No one in my chair But I'm so emphatic Someone's in my house somewhere! Where is he Where is he Where are you? You wouldn't desert me You know it would hurt me Where are you Where is he Where is he Little no one you're through! No one in the mirror No one by the door! But I'm getting clearer Someone's in my house for sure! No one small or dumb No! No one pink and white Hey! No one here I come! 'Cause! Someone's In My House Someone's In Her House And no one's getting out Tonight!
If Prince Ivan was a kid, so this would take place before Anastasia was born, and Bartok wasn't in Rasputin's employ. Then the Revolution never happened in Russia yet So Bartok is (kinda) a fallen hero by this logic

Someone once commented about this song kinda sounding like "Friend Like Me." To me, it sounds like a mixture of that song and "Poor Unfortunate Souls."
I feel bad for her cause in some way she just trying to live her life and do magic but some see it as dangerous while others see it as helpful especially after it leaves her home and it more potent cause in a way she locked herself up to keep everyone safe

It's interesting how in the beginning, the opening song painted her to be a malevolent no-nonsense villainous witch (which from the Russian myth, she mostly is). But when she makes her character establishing debut, she has a more "jazzy" musical performance and trolls with Bartok just to sing her whole song.
No one In the mirror No one by the door but I'm getting clearer Someone's in my house for sure! No one small and dumb No one pink and white no one (here I come) Someone's in my house (Someone's in her house) And no one's getting out toooniiiight!
So does this technically mean Bartok had two villain songs? We have the song from Ludmilla but we have this song which has very creepy undertones and Baba Yaga was portrayed as the antagonist until she cried when Bartok insulted her and reveals that she never took the Prince.
I'd say Baba Yaga is more of an anti-hero. She says so herself "I'd rather be alone in the woods and not be bothered" She doesn't do anything actively malicious, just trolling mostly. Edit: I just realized this comment was from 5 years ago so HI FROM 2024
I couldn't stop laughing then i was watching this movie in my childhood. You have soooo funny and soooo wrong opinion about my motherland =) By the way: Baba YagA (not YAga!!!) lives in a small wooden house which walks on two huge chicken legs (why the house in movie is so big and has the floor made of stone?). But I LOVE this song =) Sorry my English.
Baba Yaga is a tough character to pin down. At least they got the trappings right (The hut on giant chicken legs, the flying mortar and pestle)...but the real Baba is a little bit more evil...though she'll repay favors, she eats disobedient little children, so you have to be careful around her.
@animecyco007 It also pays tribute to first Anastasia film... Anastasia film: "She's dead -" Bartok film: (on jar) "Dead Bats -" Both: "DEAD. DEAD. DEAD..."

Baba: Who is in my house? I smell a rat! A witch's life is very solitary no one around to talk to but trees So many years of never making merry, but I can feel a change in the breeze! If this movie was the prequel, how did Bartok go from saving the Zaur to destroying the Zaur family with Rasputin. In fact, I think the prince in this film if a young version of Anastasia's father.
Bartok is very magical. As the Prince is Ivan Romanov and the film on Wikipedia says it is Ivan Romanov who was born in 1560s. And Anastasia's father is Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov who was born in 1868. Anastasia herself was born in 1901. So Bartok is very magical bat to live for more than 300 years. Sometimes you got to switch up your allegiances if you live that long.
well if you do, tell me where, or at least get sum1 to upload the part with the song where the queen turns into a dragon or apprentice or whatever the role was
Out of all the singer/actors out there, Andrea Martin is probably best at singing with an accent
Growing up, I loved her as the voice of Ms. Fowl in the Jimmy Neutron movie and TV show.
Eartha Kitt.
Manuel Orozco That's Mrs Fowl??? Cool!
@@manuelorozco7760hi dude how are you today

Love how Baba Yaga is this scray looking witch but yet she just a crazy old lady in this movie lol
I love Andrea Martin! I've met her and she was really nice. She did a great job with this song.
came out back in 1999 and this still slaps
I always watch on my DVD player. I remember when it first came to VHS & DVD.
She still got the best song in the movie!:)
Taliesin Swordsage yep second best goes to the villain
Andrea Martin is most definitely a professional actor, both voice AND live action.
I love this song!!!!!!
Its so jazzy!!!!
Witches are people with a magic intuition, and she's having a feeling that is oh so bewitching!
it's my favorite song in the whole film
Baba yaga understands me. I just want to be alone in my house XD
Makes you wish you could similar deal with "trespassers".
But then she's cleaning up the house during the song like she was expecting him
Who says she wants to be alone?

just watched this!!! love it so much!! love the clarinet part in this

i listen to this song more 500 times i like ittttttttttttttttttttttt
What a bewitching bop.
that is also my favorite song in this movie ^.^
I love this song.
I was still a kid when I saw this movie. I really enjoyed it, particularly the Baba Yaga character.
This song is fire 🔥
I... I JUST saw the label on the jar he first hid into... "DEAD BATS" Oh my...
oh yeas. this was also always my fave song in the movie. I remember I learned it and sang it all the time a periode :D
Didn't know they had the jazz era in pre-Revolutionary Russia. just kidding, I love this song.
Well it was just the way the composers wanted it to be. It wasn't the jazz age until the 20's where most of the previous movie is set.
Manuel Orozco Yeah, I know, that was a joke!

Curiouser Cuisine I know her primarily as Miss Fowl from _Jimmy Neutron_! 😊
A friend and I are convinced Baba figured out bartok’s hiding place about ten seconds in and is just messing with him the entire rest of the song
Oh she is. You can see very early on she's in the background smiling at him while pouring tea on him.
Someone once commented about this song kinda sounding like "Friend Like Me." To me, it sounds like a mixture of that song and "Poor Unfortunate Souls."

That's the moment when she found her 'intruder'. Lol, the rest of the song is her just fucking with him. I miss this movie.
If you had the power and reputation that Baba Yaga had and you were all alone, wouldn't you fuck with someone rather than catching them outright 😂
Disney's Witch Hazel + New haircut + Pointy Teeth = This Baba Yaga.

well now I know that! haha
i like near the end she just figures out who is in her house.

Actually Bluth is an American company, but the STORY is russian, so they, of course, Hired actors who could at least do a decent Russian accent.

omg Bartok is hilarious!
