Inquisition Manuals - The Rise of Torture & How Magic Became Heresy
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 січ 2024
- The Inquisition horrifies us today and when Edgar Allen Poe wanted to pluck a nightmarish book to feature in The Fall of the House of Usher he looked no further than the 14th century Directorium Inquisitorum of Nicholas Eymerich, the most substantial Inquisitors' manual of the period. The Inquisition of the 14th century saw the burning of Joan of Arc, the Templars and Marguerite Porete along with the foundations of the Witch Trials to come. To better understand this period, let's explore the first Inquisitors' manuals where torture becomes commonplace, public punishment replaces penance and Magic is ruled to be Heresy, dramatically shaping the history of Western Esotericism.

what do you think about the Bogomils and their connection to the Cathars? I respect your opinion highly but i want to know about what you have found on their connections. I am curious because it was a large part of my studies when i was in school. Now I wonder what there connection to the Cathar movement was?
Check out my video on the cathars to find out. Though I'm more in the skeptical camp on all this cathar stuff.
Oh my gosh. This whole episode reminds me of Mexico. When I was not able to answer a question about redemption, the priest called me the son of satan. I loved that. 😂
Got that type of treatment from my parents… looking back it’s easy to laugh it away, but in the moment I took that shit seriously, I was being convinced that I’m evil/satanic by my own dad, and now he wonders why I don’t have much to do with them and listen to Black Metal all the time
P.S I was barely ten years old during the worst of it
Isn't being raised Catholic fun? It sure was fun for me too. 😂
@@cat_and_cabbage4662 I wonder if there's a correlation between horrific childhood experiences with insane religious dogma and being a fan of Metal. I started listening to extreme genres of Metal when I was in Catholic school and never stopped 🤘😈
Same except it was my brother and he wasn't the son of Satan but they definitely knew each other very well! 😳
Or my grandmother taking the pencil out of my mother’s left hand and putting it in her right hand and saying, “diabla”.
I just wanted to thank you for releasing this for free. You 100% have the ability and right to put this behind a paywall, yet you do not. Thank you. I would donate if I could, I hope my sincere appreciation helps keep the lights on 😅
That's the beauty of crowdfunded education. Some folks are able to donate some amount of money and together I'm able to provide university level education for free to thousands of people. It's amazing and I feel blessed to be able to do it.
@@TheEsotericaChannelNot only do I learn a lot from you, sometimes you help me get a good’s night sleep. Both of those are treasures in my life. Thank you so much. 🙏🏼

A lot of those inquisitorial manipulation techniques are used by police today. That's especially unsettling tbh
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought about this. Always ask for a lawyer kids.
ACAB- All Clerics Are Bastards
@@sahamal_savu so it's not the Inquisition where you don't get a lawyer!
Meh, it just shows that it works.
Like when I was having behavioural therapy for my borderline personality disorder.
I noticed how the methods were very comparable with the MKULTRA mind control and brainwashing techniques.
Very similar techniques, although the intent and the motivation were diffent, the results were very comparable.
Shows that it works!😁
Wait till you hear about what the CIA did and supported during the Cold War.
I am frightened beyond belief that people have not changed. I can see this replay easily.
Describe where and how. And don't compare nonviolent church doctrine to inquisitory tactics. I want an honest, tot for tat comparison.
Listen to the hate from right wing politicians and evangelical churches.

Absolutely worth the entire 75 minutes. Details that I would never have known (and really, how could I?) give such a more savory taste to what we know about the inquisition.
Thanks! The medieval inquisition is really interesting and oddly doesn't get much attention at all despite being really, really important.
I did not know of the Medieval Vs. Spanish Inquisition, so this was a great watch. Excellent work.
One of THE BEST channels EVER. Thoughtful, intelligent, fabulously researched and analyzed. I see why you are here Dr. S- having worked in a university history department- there is no way they would let anyone take the time and effort to teach and demonstrate top tier research and intellectual integrity. It is a pity. Ahhhh at least we have you.
The best thing we can do is remain curious and wrestle with ideas.
Clerical Necromancy Underground is the metal band name of the episode
I think that remembering episodes like the ones you documented here is an important exercise for us believers. Sometimes, in our fight against our own bad tendencies and disbelief, we can develop a tendency towards extreme dogmatism; while I don't consider dogmatism and ortodoxy per se as a problem, we have to always pay attention to what it can become if we are not careful.
I'm all game for orthodoxy as long as it's autonomous and not heteronomous.
@@TheEsotericaChannel therefore, heterodoxy? I must look up these terms... heterodoxy + homogeneity = organized religion's dogmatism? My guess/hunch/feel before casual look-up. Now seeing about...
No one expected this video!
Amongst their weaponry were such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms.
i work tuesday-saturday, but friday is my favorite day of the week because of new esoterica videos 😌
Perhaps, this is what happens when psychotics run the country, or maybe they were "helping " by thinning the herd!
I feel like this channel exists to make videos that make it harder to talk to normal people. Keep it up!
"Hideous morons"! I love it ! Thanks as always, Dr. S. 🙇🏻♂️
Amazing analysis as always, Dr. Sledge!
I'm so thankful that you keep fighting the good fight against moral panics.
You da best!
Excellent episode. Well, they usually are but this was excellentest. My grammar school mother (deceased) is now spinning.
Interestingly the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition survives to this day - though now known as the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The DDF that recently made headlines for publishing "Fiducia supplicans", permitting the blessing of people in lgbtq+ unions, is the same functionary of the Roman Curia that led the Inquisition.
Such a fascinating, and frightening, era of Church history. Thank you for sharing your research with us Dr. Sledge!
The direct descendant of the Inquisition made that call? History is quirky
the blend of knowledge, care, and humor in these videos is such a treat to learn from!! I also appreciate you include relevant artworks often during narration, they help my comprehension and memory a lot :-)
When my grandson was in elementary school, he had a spiritual experience one day at school, and heard the voice of God calling him by his name. The school sent him home and as I picked him up, he excitedly told me about it; however, his parents when they got home from work, they took him to their catholic priest, who told them it was demonic and kicked them out of "his congregation" saying it was heresy.
Absolutely terrible behavior on part of the priest. Was the family excommunicated? Regardless...
Have you considered the "3 secrets of Fatima?" If you're not familiar, it was a big deal for the Catholics in the early 1900s. Several school aged children experienced a Marian Vision. The bright, matriarchal entity imparted several "secrets" to the children concerning the future of the church. Revelatory stuff. The children, particularly one of them, were celebrated and it is considered a bonafide miracle by the church. Isn't it funny that your grandson experiences something not incredibly dissimilar but possibly because of the faithless age we live in (and perhaps a bit of jealousy on the part of the priest, that such a miraculous experience occurred outside the walls of mother church) he is maligned for it. And here I thought the Catholics loved children 🤷🏻♂️
That sucks so much. I hope that kid kept striving towards God after that very discouraging episode.
You should have brought him to a doctor.
@@inzilbethx4501 exactly. Sounds like the beginnings of delusional disorder (hallucinations). Medical doctors may be able to alleviate this with drugs or surgery.

This was super interesting and the thing you do best - reveal arcane history and knowledge that has not been made available anywhere else. Bravo for your willingness to discuss this topic from an academic perspective without seeking to sensationalize it.
Well, I know where the next hour or so of my time is going.

Thank you for this. Topics like this are more relevant to us today than many might guess.
Interesting how it went from an inquisition to The Inquisition. Excellent work Dr. S!
Honestly, so enlightening, frankly disturbing 😳
Your content and fabulous research once again blows my mind. Your presentation delightful. So grateful.
Where's my "subjected to the inquisition" medal. Can I have a hat too? Maybe a hair shirt?
🥇- how's that heresy class coming?
@@TheEsotericaChannel It's good, were done with Gnosticism, Manichaeans, and other Christological heresies, and now speeding through the early middle ages to get to the Orleans heresy of 1022 (which you should totally do a video on if you ever run out of ideas)
You're right that is a juicy one
Friedrich Spee, a Jesuit and confessor for condemned witches also spoke out against torture in Cautio Criminals. He was a contemporary of the later witch trials and dedicated his work "to those who will not read it". 😢
Pre-Spanish - "Team Medieval Inquisition": Bring out the uncomfortable wooden, high-backed chair, the hard and lumpy cushions and the flat surface (they did not have a drying rack back then).
I was almost afraid someone wouldnt mention them!
One of the most aggravating issues with torture is the idea that torture is repellent but works. You get garbage. I understood this more fully when I spent a day in indescribable agony with my back. I literally couldn't remember who or where I was. If you told me I was an escaped albigensian tortoise I'd have agreed because I had no other ideas in my head. Note I am not, to the best of my knowledge, nor have I ever been an escaped tortoise.
It can still be said that it works, depending on the goal. If the goal is to discover the truth, then I agree with you. If the goal is confirmation of your pre-existing conclusions, or confession to an untrue accusation, or acquiescence to a totalitarian ideology, then I think it is probably very, very effective. Unfortunately, I think history shows us that vast numbers of people have been tortured in order to make them profess to lies rather than to discover the truth.
Thanks for all you do, Dr Sledge- keep up the awesome work 👏⚒️
This didn’t feel like a hour. Thanks

Thank you very much, I have to listen to the first one now.
The Inquistion is now.
We just have nuclear weapons in the play with torture and silent prisons.
The more I read Foucault, he got some things right.
Another excellent episode! I only have dipped into Gui and Eymerich briefly when I was teaching History of Witchcraft at U of M more than a decade ago (and handily translated), but found the discussion of dulia vs. latria one that still sticks with me, and how this distinction has relevance outside of the Inquisition in a variety of different religious frameworks. (There's a discussion amongst some modern polytheists/animists about whether one "worships" one's Ancestors or only "gives them honor/reverence," for example.)
“Innocentia Nihil Probat - Innocence proves Nothing” - Motto of the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition
Just hearing that name, Bernard Gui, strikes terror into my heart. Even after all these centuries!!! 😪

I greatly appreciate the "asides" you present in this video.
Wow you weave a great narrative. I think this might be one of my fav vids from your channel.
Fell down the Ruby Franke/Jodi Hildebrandt rabbit hole with the release of all the evidence. The psychologist on Hidden True Crime compared the treatment of the kids to something out of the Inquisition. The torture, false confessions, and lies, along with the children being "possessed" by demons. Your intro hit hard after that. You could add the Daybell Cult and their "zombies" to the modern day list as well.
Amazing work Dr. Sledge ! Big fan here❤
The hour flew by, you are an outstanding teacher
Eymerich: "mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the greatest inquisitor of them all?"
Great video.
This episode just highlighted to me how it is not just the information (which i knew a little about), but the structure and clear framing of the development of key ideas that really aid my comprehension. Fab work as always.

Just BRILLIANT Dr Justin… as usual. ♥️♥️♥️ E
Thank you!
I love the illustrations and color plates. Remind me of my childhood, looking at my parent's old bibles and other books.
This was really illuminating... And you're right, timely & topical these days. The crazies may just want to burn the world down, but the real fire has to be lit by those motivated by good will and moderation... Just in support of evil ends. The ends may not justify the means, but the means can surely condemn the ends.
Thanks!
Bde-bde-bde That's Inquistion, folks! (See End)
That was excellent. Keep 'em coming.
His dry humor is so endearing
Wonderful video Dr Sledge. We must learn from the past so NOT to repeat it
Very educational, Justin. Thank you. The theological/church history aspect to my interests loves this sort of thing. From a strictly believer's perspective it makes me dread reading the comments and seeing just how much it emboldens those that are critical to my faith (more and more nowadays). Nonetheless...I love this channel and i always look forward to your presentations. That dry sense of humor...😂. Thanks Dr. Sledge.
I often get the impression that Dr. Sledge underestimates how many us are here as devout believers who come to get the real story of our and other faith's histories, "warts and all" as Cromwell said.
what a horrifying time to have lived.
You are awesome!
This was a fantastic episode, and I truly appreciate you not cutting it down.
Now, I've glanced over the comments, and I've been a little surprised at some of the bias in them. This episode talks about the importance of the separation of the church and the state. I agree. But I would caution everybody not to dismiss the zealotry that exists within the government itself. Some of the tactics discussed here exist within the practices of our government, regardless of political alignment or religious influence. In fact, it is arguably more frightening to consider the potential atrocities of an establishment that does not fear the judgement of a higher power. That is not MY argument, but I believe it is one worthy of some consideration.
Where's my medal? lol
Awesome episode, as always, Dr. Sledge! Now, back to the previous episode, which I missed somehow. It's a fascinating topic, but sadly, just one of countless examples of how delusion and conviction result in horrifying persecution. Thank you for the mountains of research and insightful presentations every time, Dr. Sledge!
No thank you man! You have one of the best channels on here.
I found this video very engaging, informative, and fascinating, as usual, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a medal :p
Fascinating
Thank you Dr. Sledge. Clerical Necromantic Underground!
A missed opportunity for a radical band name!
awesome!
As usual, another great video packed to the brim with great content.
I saw it all, but in "episodes" each around 45 minutes. Maybe Dr. Sledge's editor (Mr. Justin?) can take this as a suggestion for long (but awesome) videos like this.
I thought about breaking it up but series always perform poorly and these inquisition episodes just perform poorly in general. It's important history and that's why I make them, regardless of performance. But this thing was a beast.
Just let it be know that you are awesome and have a dope metal name. Thank you for your work and service, God please bless you.
Visiting the Museums of Torture in Europe (e.g. in Siena, Italy) gives you a very disturbing sense of the horrific creativity human beings have in devising implements and methods of torture. Absolutely sadistic.
Thanks for explaining the legal terminology around heresy!
