I tell you what helped me! I used mychorrizal innoculant and I live in Houston where it gets to be 108. I forgot to water my basil for three days! They are all in pots. The ones treated with the innoculant didn’t suffer any effects. The other ones shriveled up and died! I really was truly amazed. I also like that shirt!

Yes Texas where I live is scorching especially the last 2 weeks. Our humidity is terrible as well. We are getting a “cold front” tonight they said. Only supposed to be highs of 97-101 for the next 10 days. 🥵 they are not funny. My garden burned up a couple weeks ago and I’m not planting yet for fall. I’ll wait until mid September. Your plants look great. Tfs. 👏🏻💕👏🏻

Ditto!! I do container gardening in Houston. 2 weeks ago when I'd go outside, I was immediately sopping wet from the heat and humidity. I finally brought my containers inside to work on them! It was messy and dirt got everywhere, but at least I wasn't getting heatstroke trying to work on them.

Life long texan with incredibly pale skin. Covering your skin and wearing more clothes will help you in the heat as long as you are hydrated. The more you do the more you will see the benefits. My routine is to apply suncreen, or a lotion with good spf, everywhere early in the day and let dry. Then just basically wear light winter clothes. It protects from Sun damage as well as allows the sweat to cling to you better for cooling. You will stink, but your skin will be safe and it deters aging.

My garden has slowed wayyy down in production. I’ve had to pluck off a couple of tomato horn worms that were eating one of my prize cherry tomato plants. Even though it’s raining now, we have more hot weather coming our way. We just got through one tropical storm, had another form off the coast and Lord knows what will be next. Gardening this year has certainly been an adventure!

I'm panicking to prep for winter protecting against cold but thinking of you fighting the heat...Decades ago I was involved in greenhouse construction & we put hot water heating in the concrete floor of the starter greenhouse. This was on acreage in a nursery and mass production so it worked well for starting cuttings when the little heat mats would be not affordable on large scale. Keep thinking cold water circulation in those pipes in concrete or under tile floors would definitely help things chill

We have a bad drought and multiple heat waves here in Boston that have really taken its toll on my garden this year. I heard a fellow local gardener say they’ve never seen a drought this bad in the 20 years they’ve been gardening. Thankfully we got some rain today and the latest heatwave has broken. A lot of my plants have barely pulled through. I’m going to nurse them along this fall and hopefully they’ll recover and come up healthy next year.

What we use out here in Nebraska, we use newspapers to lay between the rows. Four to five layers of newspaper and then you put your grass clippings on top. Water well when you first put them down, and then a deep soaking every morning. We would also give a "perk up" water on the ground, not on the leaves around 3pm to help cool the soil so the roots can stay viable. We also give a compost tea once a week during hot spells. It is low on the acid but helps to revive the soil without stressing the plants. This would also begin during the early morning watering.

Could you make a video about ventilation or more generally plant respiration? I live in Texas and we've had and routinely have days where the temperature is >100 from ~11 AM - 6/7 PM... I've found that using a fan helps immensely in growing cat grass and spearmint, and outside at that to deter the air heat stress on the plants because we get pretty high humidity too which makes the 100 degree heat even worse. I honestly think if I wasn't using a fan/some form of air ventilation my bed would be dead.. Thanks for the great video Kevin!

Hello from Canada! It gets super cold here... but just for a short time it gets super hot!
My garden soil is black, not brown, not dark brown- blaaack.
It absorbs heat terribly. The internal temperature of my soil can get uncomfortably hot. So, I let my weeds grow. Yes. My weeds protect my veggies and I carefully tend them, not allowing them to flower. It's a symbiotic system that works during my short growing season. Sorry if using weeds (mostly edible types like dandelion, porchulacca, sorrel, and plantain) bothers some. 😉😄👍❤

Why didn’t you post this two weeks ago. Stupid California heat waves took my poor babies. Chamomile , romaine, red and green peppers, oregano, and jalapeños!!!! My thyme is fine and my tomatoes are standing on one leg lol but I’m happy I had a summer patio hobby; until next year!!

I'm a new gardener and I live in SoCal (just north of you). I'd love to grow some lettuce & spinach for my wife. But I can't seem to get them to grow in the summer. Do you think shade cloth 30-50% would work??

My uncle married a Coptic girl from the south of Egypt. First time she got off the plane here in Louisiana to meet the grandparents she was like 'Huh, feels just like home'.
I think it is just a little cooler though not all that much. Probably all the trees and more water helps keep it a bit cooler.

I'm in SoCal near LA and it's been around 110 here all week. My table top gardens are drying out so bad it's like the dirt is repelling water. When I water them it runs straight down out the drainage holes but if I stick my hand in it's all dry. I've got plants in there so I can't really stir it up like you might do to a dry bag of top soil. Do you have any tips on how to get the whole thing to soak up water again?

Great tips! I’ve been watering all my plants and garden around 7:30-8am. I live in Riverside, Ca and it’s extremely hot here.
I have a question regarding plant bags, I have some black plant bags which I’ve planted oregano and cilantro and I’ve noticed the outside of the cloth bag has some green growing. Have you ever experienced this with your grow bags? Looks almost like fungus.

Hi. If watering in morning, consider watering ground level. Water droplets on leaves will be glass magnifier n scald leaves. If you know your garden will growing mostly in summer, take small tall wax cartons, like holes in them n bury few in soil n plant around them. When hot weather moves in, unscrew cap in carton , fill with water, deep watering achieved. Peace to you and yours

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  4 роки тому

They really don't scald leaves, common myth there!
