Beautiful job. It was interesting to see the resin found its way into all the nooks and crannies of the burl without you having to manipulate the mold. Thanks for sharing.

I've only turned 1 stabilized burl and you ain't kidding... that thing was like turning a rock. It laughed at my gouge and made me pull out my carbide tools. I remember feeling like I was getting sand blasted by the chips coming off the burl.
It is unbelievable huh? I took over 3 hours to hollow this which is 2-1/2 hours too long. Worth stabilizing though! Thanks for watching

As always, you have produced a beautiful, artistic piece of turning Lewis. I watched the first part on the preparation of the burl & was amazed at the process but it was totally worth it. I read a lot of the comments on colour that you asked for but decided that all bases had been covered by other people so held back on that one. Outstanding, Lewis! That resin really popped and what an incredible combination. I'm so glad you got such accents. I did not realize that pouring it in that matter would create streaks. I thought it might just become more homogeneous. I think we can all feel a little bit of the pain when that came off on your. Good job recovering and you could almost see the
hesitancy reshaping that dove tail after remounting it.
I'm just about done cleaning out my Maple burl and plan to do it with copper. Not sure when I'll be done because I works so slow and I've got a lot of other things on the burner right now. Thinking of this video will keep me motivated to get it in the pressure pot sooner than later.

That combination of colors is so beautiful and the burl is well.. burl so, it’s always going to be gorgeous, when the artist knows how to showcase its beauty as you have.😊I love large pieces like this. Can’t wait for the next red combination. My hubby and I just did the tops of our nightstands in epoxy. The main colors were rose gold (which was a light copper) a reddish copper, dark bronze with splashes of blood red and greenish gold alcohol inks. We also added reddish gold holographic maple leaves🍁to a sub layer so, you can catch a glimpse of those here and there. We did 4 layers and it gave it such a wonderful sense of depth. We both love autumn colors and we were really happy with the results. You do amazing work, thanks for sharing it.

Beautiful piece of work! I’ve watched a number of your videos and your inspiring me to get back into wood turning having not done any for 45 years. I’m just looking at lathes (probably a midi lathe) but unsure on makes, as well as what tools I’m going to need to get up and running.
Hey! I really appreciate that! I cannot recommend a lathe other than buy the biggest and best you can afford because you will likely want to upgrade if you dont. If you like traditional tools, a 1/2' bowl gouge, 1/2" spindle gouge, a parting tool, a good thick scraper and a pointed tool will do mostly everything. If you like carbides I highly recommend Easywood tools and I dont get paid to say that. Love to see what you get and what you make when you get going. klondikecraftsman@hotmail.com . This is beautiful, but I really wish you would've used a shade that was more turquoise than blue. Or even a darker purple. I think it would've gone with the wood better. It's still beautiful, though.

OMG! Your heart must have sank when it flew off the lathe!! I had never heard that cactus juice resin doesn’t bond well with turning resin… I stabilize pinecones and cast them and at times have issues with voids. I wonder if that is the issue. Is it just personal experience that has you say that? Or have you heard it from Curtis or elsewhere? Also, I’ve never trusted a mortise enough for hollowing. I haven’t finished the video as I am writing this, but I trust it works out well for you and it saves you the step of having to turn off a tenon at the end…. Thanks for your videos, they are great!

man she’s a beaut, your audience picked a great color combo. is that smoke coming off the forstner bit when you’re hollowing or just wood dust? i’ve seen that before in other videos and couldn’t tell if it was actually smoke or not. do the bits get hot enough to make smoke or is it just super fine wood particles im seeing??
I think it is the cactus juice heating up. The bit is hot but not burning. Stabilized wood is very powdery so it is hard to say. WhT I do know it the burl was stabilized completely through. Thanks for watching Dan

This is Stunning! I really want to try casting a resin/wood block myself but I don’t know how much resin I would need to buy. How much resin do you think you used in this piece and what type of resin is suitable for hollow forms? Thanks, Cheryl 🥰
Thank you Cheryl! I use either the deep pour from Red Creek Wood Designs or Alumilite Clear slow. I mixed about 2200 grams for this one but I wanted some for another pour. The key is to have a container ready for extra, always shoot for extra over having to match colours from being short. If you start with more regular shapes it helps you to get a feel for the irregular. I appreciate you watching!

Thank you. The time in the pressure pot is determined by the cure time of the resin. I have some that takes 6 hours and some that takes 36 hours. Thanks for watching!
