I find hilarious when people say that a show like the Office wouldn't/couldn't be remade because of changing sensibilities, when the Office has experience ongoing popularity. Arguably, it's even more popular now than it was when it originally aired. And that's what matters to the producers of any potential reboot/remake.
But a "new Office" can't just be a retread of the original show. For one, that's not what they're reporting it's going to be. It's a show that will be set in "the Office universe." Secondly, it'll be hard to capture the same magic with having different actors play similar characters. But Greg Daniels managed to take an existing show and reboot it with a new spin, once already. He might be able to do it again.

This isn't a reboot though, is it? My understanding is that it's a completely different show that exists in the same universe as The Office. So, like Parks and Rec (with the addition of The Office camera crew). That's not a reboot at all. Unless I've got it wrong? Daniels and Co. might be exaggerating links to The Office because they know that's the best way to make sure this show is a go.

I think calling whatever this new show is 'The Office' is just guaranteeing failure. I legit feel bad for whoever is cast because they will get nonstop online grief until the show is cancelled in season 1. Another Shure-verse show, absolutely. But an Office reboot? Dear god, no. Unless this is one of those things where Universal will make more money by filming and shelving this and taking the tax write off - this is a bad idea.

I really never got the claims that The Office would NEVER BE ALLOWED TO AIR TODAY. Like yes, there were offensive jokes throughout the entire run. But the show was also astutely aware that the ridiculous things its characters said were, just that, ridiculous. I really don't see why it couldn't be made today.
Anyhoo, personally hoping for a completely new business and new cast, just with the same sense of humor and drama as The Office. As great as Parks and Rec is, it's also far sillier and more out there imo.

    • @Coneyislandwhitefish

Its not that ridiculous. The office has had to edit things out of the peacock episodes (black Peter for example in Pennsylvania Dutch Christmas). Its always sunny has had to do it a lot more, or remove episodes altogether (basically any time Dee dresses up as her racially charged characters) I don’t agree with the changing- but don’t be surprised if it happens with other shows that were once considered irreverent and funny.

See, the dumb part about this is that we are collectively so brain-poisoned by never ending culture wars that we all get shoehorned into dichotomic sound-bites on what are fairly nuanced topics. It is very convenient that we all get obsessed with "haha Michael said funny non-PC thing, it couldn't happen today amirite?", and for example ignore how the show's commentary on work and corporate structures got duller and duller even during what is recognised as the show's peak years, or how Jim had to be slowly changed from a slacker to the all-American go-getting baby-face he was in the latter years.
Buuut I wouldn't be surprised if they make it extra-edgy just to make a point, mess with the audience's expectation and go for a few cheap outrage clicks. With Ricky G onboard I wouldn't be surprised if the writing process goes a bit like "The BoJack Horseman Show". Opening scene, Michael screams "WASSAP BITCCCCHES" and takes a dump on Pam's painting. It might actually be funnier than a big chunk of season 9 to be honest.

  • @SonnyK248
    @SonnyK248 Місяць тому +2

It's going to be way harder than when they rebooted it the first time. The first one is almost like "hey what if we did The Office again but 20 episodes a season and we can develop a dozen characters and learn a tone more about what they get up to outside etc. But now they're basically doing that again, only they already showed us Tim and Dawn's life story in the US version with Pam and Jim. We've seen David and Gareth grow up and become more empathetic caring people with Michael and Dwight. The new one is just going to be a pallet swap of the original US version. Get a new wacky boss, some new wacky workers. Only they're probably going to make that mistake where they make them the peak season 5 versions of themselves immediately instead of getting to watch them all find their characters and grow.

I would say even calling this new show a "soft reboot" may be a stretch. With all new characters, they need to be careful that some just don't end up being caricatures of the U.S. version. Like, "Hey this guy is super goofy, he's the new Michael! This one is grumpy, so he's like Stanley!!" I'm a big fan of The Office, yet I find myself curious, but not stoked for this. Also, I would be surprised if they find a believable way to get cameos. It doesn't take place in Scranton, so maybe a convention of multiple companies and Dunder Miflin happens to be one of them in attendance?

honestly think the hardest part will be getting people on board with the show for good. they might get high viewership from curios office fans but the modern climate of tv really leaves no room for mistakes or trials. both audiences & networks just don't care to commit. if this doesn't turn out to be a magnum opus from the pilot I don't think this show will even have a chance to find its footing the way the original office did, and it'll be another blip in the timeline.

I mean I’m woke af and I don’t think Michael’s ignorance is a problem at all, it’s clearly portrayed as a personality flaw in a funny way. If the show portrayed his ignorance as though it was *correct* or somehow fine & not a flaw at all then I’d have an issue with it-but it doesn’t

No way. The point is that in this 'over sensitive world' is that what you gonna do, the 'woke' people are gonna be mad, even if it is implied that the main character is wrong. Even nowadays, some people are mad of for example S1E2.

I mean, I guess I'm what anti woke people would call "woke" and The Office is one of my favorite shows. It has some doubtful moments like every sitcoms but most of it is indeed making fun of Michael's ignorance. In fact its pretty ahead of its time for a lot of stuff

5:35 you are wrong. You don't get the point.
The point is that in this 'over sensitive world' is that the same edgy jokes and situations are not gonna be featured. The point is that in this 'over sensitive world' is that what you gonna do, the 'woke' people are gonna be mad, even if it is implied that the main character is wrong. Even nowadays, some people are mad of, for example S1E2. So they are gonna play it too safe and maybe even pander those kind of 'woke over sensitive' people.
Reboot is probably not gonna work (even if it is a 'real reboot' like you said).
Edit: look at other famous examples. Stars Wars, Marvel, Terminator, Scream, Exorcist, etc. They are all 'woke' and play it safe.

Can a Seinfeld reboot work without Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer? No? Well neither could a Office reboot. This is a garbage nostalgic idea.

I think calling this a “reboot” is already killing the project. It’s not a reboot if it’s a new company of people in a new location and is timeline wise after the events of The Office. It’s a sequel. In fact it’s just their own story now.

a reboot could work but only with the same edgy humor thatt the "woke kids" don't like but anyone else loves cause a joke is a joke! could be like that they are all old but do the same pranks etc and somehow all work together of course!
