    Fun video! I just had my vintage 90’s Buffet Festival rebuilt and was talking to my clarinet guy a bit. He said that my vintage Festival is not even close to what is being made now by Buffet. The wood is different, the key work is different, and the quality is not the same overall. He actually recommends Selmer to people wanting to purchase something new these days. I was also told that the R13 is now considered an intermediate instrument among professionals. When I was in school for music my entire section played on Buffet R 13 clarinets. Mind you this was in the mid 90’s. I was the odd duck out with my Festival.

    Picking up on one of the Double Clarinet videos about types of clarinet players, it's the talent and the hard work that make most of what you can do with your musical expression. The instrument and mouthpiece also play important roles, and this I personally know from my own experience as a player and of listening to other players. Overall, top tier models have more detail put in to them, as lower (student and middle models) don't have as much. And that can make some difference, yes! But it's more what the clarinet can do for you, than what you can do for the clarinet, and there is no better or worst set up - there is the set up that works for you, but you have to put in the work. Backun, buffet, selmer, yamaha, for boehm system, are all very good. Buffets and selmers have some expensive models that are not worth it, and backun is overall expensive (would have to gain if they lowered their prices). Yamaha...should deserve more of ones attention. Thanks.

    I personally use Buffet. It’s kinda funny because I can’t just say Buffet is the best because Buffet is the only thing I’ve used. My private lesson teacher was always very biased towards equipment. Everything was Buffet and Vandoren, anything else would draw some level of concern from her. I’m not throwing any shade at my teacher btw, she does a fantastic job at giving constructive criticism, yet giving just enough pressure on you to keep you practicing: I mean this is the teacher that gave me a setup that got me first chair in top region band, and second chair region orchestra in middle school, so thats saying something. I think Buffet R13 is the perfect upgrade clarinet for anyone wanting to go to that extra level, or even go pro because of its price, and sound.

    I've just got an old pair of 1970s Leblanc dynamic H clarinets and they are just beautiful to play. I'd only ever played machine made clarinets until I got them but they've absolutely converted me to handmade clarinets. I'm getting them completely rebuilt as well so they will play better than new when I get them back in a few months.

    Very interesting video. I tested almost all Buffet and Selmer, two Backun (Alpha and cocobolo Lumière, didn't like at all), and three Yamaha (not pro-level instruments). I'm a Selmer guy (especially 10S, Privilège, Récital, and pre WWII models). Selmer clarinets have what I call "the Selmer kick" : a kind of punch in the sound with warm low ends, a centered core sound, and I always felt Buffet-Crampon clarinets are more "quiet" in a way. I also love Selmer keywork, my right index finger always tangle in Buffet-Crampon trill keys. Despite this, I was blown away by Buffet-Crampon Tradition, it was a real pleasure to play-test. I remember a discussion with a clarinet player who plays Selmer and his husband plays Buffet : when they try to swap instruments, just testing, she did'nt like the sound on the Buffet and his husband was breathless when he tried the Selmer. I'm pro-Selmer, but there are some I don't like (Serie 9 and Signature), some I found really amazing and so comfortable to play but it's not my sound (Muse) ; on the other hand, I hated Buffet Légende made in grenadilla when I tested, but I was very pleased and surprised by the Légende made in rosewood. I think no brand is the best, depends on what you are and your own sensations, even in the same brand there are differences between models : just compare Récital/Signature/Muse ; or Festival/RC Prestige/Tradition. There are different sound signatures between brands, keywork preferences, pressure you need in your playing style, and that lead you to choice. Fun fact to conclude : during a clarinet day in a Conservatory last year, there were Selmer, Backun and Buffet stands... all the teen pupils run for Buffet testing during the break between two master classes...

    Ive been playing a buffet for about five months now and personally i think its great for a pretty good price at like 600 ish (american), and having played a selmer i think those are great too, but i think i would chose a buffet over a selmer.

    I've played only Buffet since moving beyond my student model. Buffet Low C Bass clarinet in High School and Buffet R13s and Greenlines in the Marine Corps. I just bought a Selmer Signet Special online. I'm excited to get it fixed up and see the differences. I can guarantee you it will be better than my Student model Vito with a B so flat it sounded like I played Bb twice in my chromatic scale lol.

    Only a litle advise. Lots of people will watch this because they are buying new clarinet, comparing them... And they allso want to see this. It was perfect when she sad that her clarinet is all black and it looks fancy. Boy on the left only showed 2 images from internet but not what he uses and how to compare it to the original/other options...something like that. 👍Good video anyway

    After 30 years as a Principal Clarinet with a large American orchestra, and after playing only R13s, I discovered Rossis, and played the French bore model for the last years of my tenure. Gone were the problems of most reeds sounding too bright on stage, and the response difficulties with Buffet.

    I'm going to buy a Buffet E11 to upgrade from my J Michaels one :) everything above is too expensive for me... what do you think of it?

    • @JKimzzle
      @JKimzzle  3 роки тому +2

      Hi! This is Justin Kim, and I just want to tell you that I also use the E11! I am not currently planning to major in music, so have not made the switch yet. Therefore, it's a perfect instrument for me! However, if you are planning to go pro, then an R13 or any higher models would probably serve you better. But if you're in high school (just like me :), then an E11 will be absolutely fine, at least as a "waiting" instrument until you decide to go pro or keep playing as a hobby. Hope this helped!

      @@JKimzzle I test played a whole bunch of used fancy clarinets Selmer, Backun E11 R13 at a music shop and my wife bought me a Backun. I did not think any of them sounded better and player more easily than the cheap $100 Mendini. I even made a backun comparison video here.
