The Mars Volta is most definately a jam band. You can tell that the second you go to one of their live shows. They just rock out. If they happen to play a song, that's cool.
This is the very 1st time I saw a video from this band, just read about them from an article about John Frusciante a few minutes ago. Wow what an original kick-ass band! I think these guys are rock stars and I'm definitely gonna check their music out. Just when I thought it was over bang! They just kept rockin! Loved it!
Kind of ironic considering the majority of those who attended their shows in Australia absolutely loved them. One of the best boots around is their Hordern performance. If you haven't listened to it, then you're really missing out.
This aired April 27th. And they do have a new album coming out, it's called The Bedlam in Goliath. Actually, it's already done (recorded, mixed, etc) but it probably won't be released for a few months because of the record label (google it).
I love The Mars Volta and Tool respectively. I have a special place for TMV in my spleen and a soft gushy spot in my colon for Tool and Maynard James Keenan projects. I'm one of those few people sir.
The bongo solo is the easiest part of this mix to discern audibly. However, I could live without the bongo solo if I could say, hear the majority of snare hits or maybe a single clear note from the bassist. Whoever mixed this ought to be embarrassed.
totally agree, you can like it or not that reminds me of the movie Amadeus, when they tell Mozart "it has... too much notes", and he can believe what he's hearing...
Well I respect your opinion man and you know you can like what you like and stuff, but I mean I am 15 and personally I find this stuff great. I mean I love how chaotic and abstract it is and I don't know it just has this energy to it that I love. I mean I guess how you might think this is self indulgent, but personally I think it's a lot better then these bands who just play 3 or 4 chords. I mean I would rather listen to this then all the shallow radio pop stuff that most people my age enjoy.
why is that a band this awesome with someone like omar who you'd think would be so meticulous about sound, always have such godawful sound live. i saw them front row in calgary in september and could hear the kick drum and sometimes omar. this is a step up but still. what the crunk.
Two. They had Jon Theodore, now they have Thomas Pridgen. The drummer in this video, whom I can't remember the name of at the moment, was only filling in between the transition.
they started with jon theodore, then on tour they replaced him with blake fleming, but during that tour they switched it up with Deantoni Parks. then when they started to record the bedlam in goliath they got thomas pridgen
I'm a little late to the game, but here's my two cents. Comparing Tool and TMV is like comparing apples and oranges. They're two completely different bands that bring different things to the table. Mars Volta fans enjoy their music for their complexity, for me it's artistic expression in the purest possible form. Tool is more cerebral. They have great concepts and ideas in their work, and integrate different musical elements into it. Both have done great things for metal and music altogether.
I saw them live again a few months ago in Australia and was genuinely bored by the 15 minute "hey, look what we can do" solos. They totally alienate the audience as well, 70% of people were sitting down on the ground by the end of the show. I used to love this band
His hair looks similar to when they were touring with RHCP and in 2003. In 2002 he was sporting that mod-mullet hairstyle. He hasn't always had a typical afro.
Ah, that's when they still allowed for the full bongo solo... awesome, Cedric was amazing, thanks for uploading. But Tetragrammaton was performed twice as flawlessly. Blake never did nail down Baphomets.
Pink Floyd jammed a lot, no one ever called them a jam band. Mars Volta are more like a mix between Floyd, Zappa, and Santana. All great bands. No popular bands like this around anymore, which is why i have a lot of respect for these guys.
@napkinshower I beg to differ. Danny Carey says he plays things differently all the time, otherwise he would get bored. The parts essential to the song he plays the same, but a lot of parts he plays differently.
@dashiellharper I dont know what your talking about, i saw TMV in calgary when they came with system of a down and i could hear everything fine. The show was short, but i think thats to be expected from an opening act.
Hey, donjox and iamlameduck are right! If you listen carefully to Cedric at 1:55, he's not singing 'Give me one page, give me one page, make it blank', like he does on the album version. He sings, "Jimmy (one) Page, Jimmy (One) Page, Robert Plant"! OHMAGAW, TEH MARS VOLTA ARE RIPPN OF LED ZEPLINE!
anyone that cant apreciate this music cuz they r watching a muffeld performance obviously does not listen to The Mars Volta from on Albums.. Give some respect for this amazing band.. geeze do some research. This performance is bad ass by the way the pongos rock
@WhiteKnight4171988 Every song is written in a key. Just because you haven't heard the key before doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Repitition of notes automatically denotes a key signature...they just change their key 50 times during the song. Interesting though is that if you listen to a grade 3 kid playing the recorder, you can witness the same style of playing.
I remember seeing this when I was young teen. Instantly obssessed. That high note in the beginning 💚
Thanks for Part 1 and 2. i love the mars volta, i saw them a few days ago.
The Mars Volta is most definately a jam band. You can tell that the second you go to one of their live shows. They just rock out. If they happen to play a song, that's cool.
I have listening to these guys on and off for 6 years now and I still can't figure them out....at all!
The bongo solo is so sick within the whole composition... rocks my sox of every time...
Great song, great album.
"Tool is more cerebral."
-the man who does not understand the definition of cerebral
omg their new cd is probably all im gnna be listenin to for the next couple of monthe its amazingly beautiful :]

This band is pure awesomeness, is Music made poetry, the poetry of life and everything valuable about the world
One of myy favorite parts that TMV has ever written =D
They are just so god damn good.
Kind of ironic considering the majority of those who attended their shows in Australia absolutely loved them. One of the best boots around is their Hordern performance. If you haven't listened to it, then you're really missing out.
Jam or not! This is fucking smooth! Really nice og intense preformance! Amazing! And yeah, saxophone!
Love it when they all clap their hands!
This aired April 27th.
And they do have a new album coming out, it's called The Bedlam in Goliath. Actually, it's already done (recorded, mixed, etc) but it probably won't be released for a few months because of the record label (google it).
so much creativity, its amazing.
I love both bands too! They are both fantastic in their own ways!
This was their warm-up song. When they do Tetragrammaton after this, it is absolutely flawless!
LOVE THE FLAG IN THE BACKROUND! :)
The Mars Volta is the most god damn amazing band around
i totally can agree with that, thank you for making sense.
Oh man i just love that scream at the beggining
I think the awesomeness of the bongo solo actually tops that of the intro bass solo.
Great band. Free and creative feeling like 60s psychedelic bands!
holy shit lol this so awsome, they go crazy during the bongos hahah love it
I love The Mars Volta and Tool respectively. I have a special place for TMV in my spleen and a soft gushy spot in my colon for Tool and Maynard James Keenan projects. I'm one of those few people sir.

Wow, so many people went to that Aragon show. But damn, it was worth it.
Love the bongos.
Didn't even know those were bongos on the album version.
oh man, I was at the aragon, too. what a great show that was.
..but they now have arguably one of the best drummers around. This is gonna be good.
awsome band.
I love these people...
This is fuckin amazing, thier such a beautiful musical force
fucking amazing the bongo thing ! = ).. everybody dancing ! i love the mars volta !
when de-loused realeased i thought this people will never get higher than this, but thank mother nature i was wrong
i never was so wrong in my life
I am so glad that they got that wesley willis on the keyboards. he's a fine boy.
totally agree, you can like it or not
that reminds me of the movie Amadeus, when they tell Mozart "it has... too much notes", and he can believe what he's hearing...
Cool, they are a very good band.
they were so good in this
i love that he screamed at the start
...goddamn bongo solo rocks my motherfucking socks OFF every fucking time!
Beautiful, much better live than the album.
Well I respect your opinion man and you know you can like what you like and stuff, but I mean I am 15 and personally I find this stuff great. good stuff
relaxing
mood-altering
Love that scream :-D
EPIC music
every time i play this song me and my wife start dancing salsa to it. :)
Good Times.

The best band in history
I fuckin' love it. It's like a modern MC5.
Hot damn.
i saw em in austin wish i could see em again before i die atleast!
Overrated? Nah.
Underrated? Absolutely!
love it

@12toedfeet thanks man, i did some research and found it out for myself eventually. he grooves so hard!
they started with jon theodore, then on tour they replaced him with blake fleming, but during that tour they switched it up with Deantoni Parks. then when they started to record the bedlam in goliath they got thomas pridgen
0:37 king crimson mood ;)

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
q solo de bongos
dios mio pura acides wooooooooooooooooooooo
Awesome
starting at 1:05 its like the most mexican thing i have ever seen in my life. i love this band.
When he was still in ATDI
He left a shit ton of words out of
cosmonaut at big day out
I saw them live again a few months ago in Australia and was genuinely bored by the 15 minute "hey, look what we can do" solos. They totally alienate the audience as well, 70% of people were sitting down on the ground by the end of the show.
I used to love this band
"Raise your entrails as an offer"
Favorite line in the song.
His hair looks similar to when they were touring with RHCP and in 2003. In 2002 he was sporting that mod-mullet hairstyle. He hasn't always had a typical afro.
lolzorz, its really funny how the two halves of the songs are seperated
Ah, that's when they still allowed for the full bongo solo... awesome, Cedric was amazing, thanks for uploading.

genial genial genial
same here lal6060... they r like my favorite..

I know right, in the breakdown for Cygnus Vismund Cygnus it's like "Oh shit, how the fuck does he do that?"
Ikey looks like a mad scientist!:D
Believe me, sometimes that many instruments aren't enough.
TMV simply rocks.
If they're not your cup of tea, just search for another video.
The Mars Volta are very much organised.
doens't get any more latin than this!!
STILL WAITING FOR MARS VOLTA/COHEED AND CAMBRIA TOUR!!!
I second that
Yay for bongo solo! XD
dope shit son, keep that shit a rollin
Wow!
Que sonido mas loco tienen estos latinos!
@dashiellharper
I dont know what your talking about, i saw TMV in calgary when they came with system of a down and i could hear everything fine. The show was short, but i think thats to be expected from an opening act.
I was at the Aragon, and the bongos were so amazing. They are so weak in this recording. It's sad that this doesn't represent the band live at all.
OHMAGAW, TEH MARS VOLTA ARE RIPPN OF LED ZEPLINE!
alucinante
0:49 best bridge of all time
anyone that cant apreciate this music cuz they r watching a muffeld performance obviously does not listen to The Mars Volta from on Albums.. Give some respect for this amazing band.. geeze do some research. This performance is bad ass by the way the pongos rock
I don't care about other people's taste in music and I'm confident you don't care about mine but Mars Volta is the shit.
@WhiteKnight4171988 Every song is written in a key. Just because you haven't heard the key before doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Repitition of notes automatically denotes a key signature...they just change their key 50 times during the song. day of the baphomets by the mars volta.
fug yeah!
Very interesting. They must have also gotten a jazz influence.
Dancing? You need to watch some more of their live show footage (either early on 2002-2004 or 2008)...it gets a lot crazier and cooler.
TMV allows other ideas control their music than tonality. Reminds me of Arnold Schoenberg.
The Mars Volta at the Henry Rollins Show... it's like Elvis meets Janis Joplin...
damm.. i sing when i take a crap but with this song, i dont even know if i can sit singing this shit...
yeah great bongo solo
