  • Airbnb has changed a lot since its introduction in 2009 and people are not happy. There is a feeling that costs are escalating and some hosts are not fulfilling the promise of what they offer. If you think differently, for many, there is already a platform out there that could well be the death of Airbnb for them.

Housesitting is not for me. When I'm on holiday, I don't want to be responsible for other people's pets or homes. Nor do I want to have to do tasks. I want to enjoy my time not worrying about what might happen.

We’re DEFINITELY interested in more info on your experience with Trusted Housesitters! We too are a bit fed up with Airbnb. We’ve done 53 stays with Airbnb and there’s been a negative trend in our satisfaction over the years as you mentioned in your previous video. We will be departing on our next trip in Nov for 5-6 months and I will refrain from signing up for Trusted Housesitters until we see if any future affiliation with your channel offers some sort of discount on a subscription. Thanks for doing this. Happy travels.

Another option is house swapping. We did this for 10 years ( on and off) and traveled all over the world. We met interesting people and stayed in some amazing homes.

The site we used seems to have closed. If you google “ home exchange” you will find sites but I don’t know anything about them, it worked really well for us but since the Covid shutdowns we are just holidaying locally.

Thank you for sharing the videos about Airbnb and trusted house-sitters. I have found AirBnB so expensive as a couple with all the extras. One of my pet hates is booking two bedroom accommodation and being told that I have to pay extra for using the second bedroom (when I went away with my sister). Surely that should be factored in the whole cost. Heyho! Personally prefer booking B&B guest houses or hotels as a couple, but I like the idea of trusted housesitters, or House swap or even a workaway!

Yes, please share your experiences with Trusted Housesitters. We have not had the best success with AirBnB from our personal experience so we use a different platform that we have had great success! We actually had a home we stayed in Scarborough and it was like a housesitting situation. Thank you, both, for always sharing your experiences....your videos get better each time, they are VERY informative.

Have been doing THS for at 15 yrs plus another similar site but smaller, we like because your accommodation is free, and you don’t feel the need to be out everyday looking at the sites, which is always on your mind when booking with ABB or hotels or other options. Have made permanent friends with many people we have house sat for and the biggest plus is you live like a local shopping at their supermarkets etc. We always try to get long sits as we come from the furthest distance, so 3 mths are perfect, then try to get a follow on from there, so normally are away for 6 mths each year. Wish we had started earlier in our life.

Hi Neil. We are currently funding a trip to Canada by housesitting part of the trip. We have had a fantastic experience with all our sits so far. It seems more popular in English speaking countries (USA Canada Australia and UK) but these countries are also more expensive for accomodation in so Housesitting’s allows us to offset some of the cost.

YES! In fact, we have some friends who have been doing this for a few years now and have encouraged us to do it as well. My wife just retired and we are ready to roll. We'll be out travelling to Argentina, Chile, and Hawaii, L'A, Seattle and Toronto until November. We're looking to slow down in 2024 and would love to participate in this program.

Okay Neil...you've had a good experience with them. But you need to do a deeper dive into the complaints against them. I'm not a pet person so I did some internet searching. A lot of issues with insurance, demanding irrational pet owners, filthy locations. But the biggest issue is lack of customer service response, complained about over and over.
All things online start out gung-ho, brilliant, and promising. Then reality sets in...the app/site gets overwhelmed or butts up against issues they didn't realize would be issues...and things go south. But then you have the providers and consumers who learn to game the system....and make it the pits for everyone
Use their services yourselves...enjoy...save on accommodations while you enjoy the animals.....but I would be very wary about associating your brand with a site that has such significant issues. Would you associate your brand with AirBNB? Exactly.

Another big problem I have with Air BnB is only one 'house' key. this means you have to be together all the time or coordinate exchanging the key. One place in France you couldn't get into the building and then the apartment with out 2 keys, also the apartment door didn't lock/unlock from the inside, needless to say if one took the key the other was either locked into the apartment or the door was open! No early morning dash to the bakery while my partner slept in.

I enjoy your videos and information!
As a member of TrustedHousesitters for over 8 years, and having looked after many pets and homes….I have to say: it’s NOT a vacation for the sitter.
It’s a responsibility that the sitter has to be aware of.
I have had to sort out sick pets, pets that have died, unruly pets and challenging situations…. It’s not a stress fee life, that’s for sure.
I love the opportunities it provides , and have had some wonderful sits….but to focus on the cost only without the awareness that it’s not a vacation, but a responsibility is important.

Hi Neil! Hi Sarah! Love this concept and the tip to do this locally to develop a stellar reputation. 👍🏻 I wonder about two things. Do the responsibilities tether you to the property, so limited opportunity to explore? If it’s mostly pet sitting, then yes, makes sense. Also, is this global or is it more popular in certain countries? I suppose I could go to their website and check it out for myself ;) Thanks for another excellent video!

I looked into this but it all feels too "competitive" it's like applying for a job which I hate. Also...two huge drawbacks,
if you haven't got a permanent address you can't really be flexible you have to plan ahead as best you can.
And...what happens when they cancel look at the recent mess with all flights cancelled when the system went down, you have to scramble to find somewhere then.
Good luck but I prefer to be footloose and free to live things my way..that's why I retired early.

We are living our nomadic life and are currently doing Airbnb, Agoda and similar platforms. We would love to house sit for a dog owner but I feel with a dog you probably cannot leave the place for more than a couple hours and therefore you won't be able to really enjoy or see the destination where you are at. Maybe this is different with cats, which I don't have any experience with. We would like to see more information on this at some point if possible. Thank you!

Hi Neil, Sarah 😊 I enjoyed this esp as I have 5 cats 😅 I usually ask a neighbour to come in and feed them, or pay a friend to come stay. My concern is a) someone who will be kind and loving and responsible to my girls and b) not become a squatter. Seriously. Toronto is in a housing crisis at the moment and I am genuinely concerned a stranger could just decide not to leave my home. This is why I pay a neighbour - they already have a home. May sound cold but this is my home and I don't let anyone in I don't trust. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Airbnb is sucks. They are taking every place without checking out. Lot of places that are not like on the pictures. I had one with mold other one was not cleaned no bedding sheets changed. Landlord text me apology that the cleaning lady is on vacation. With all evidences such as pictures text messages submitted Airbnb didn’t give refund. I have to contact my credit card company who handled within 7 days a refund.

I’ve just today signed up to Trustedhousesitters and already have a confirmed booking plus one that’s pending a video call this week. These are both in my locality so that I can get some 5* reviews before applying for international sits where my son lives in Perth Australia.

Doing a video focusing on a company that you hope to work with is a bit like making an audition video. I respect that you guys try to be honest in everything you talk about but it becomes impossible to be objective when there is a business relationship involved. For me, future videos that address accommodations will have less value. On a different note, many of the listings on trusted home sitters are for one to two weeks. It seems to me that a hybrid system may be more workable, that is, home sitting when possible and B&B to fill in the gaps.
