Next thing I know he cuts down a dirt road that I didn't know. I said I thought you were going to your sister's??? He said I am. WATCH THIS!! Next thing I know we're doing 80 down this dirt road. Dust going 30 feet in the air. Rocks popping off the bottom of the truck and off the drive shaft. I am hanging on for dear life--no seat belts. I can feel the truck fish tailing. It went that way like a bat out of hell putting dust 50 feet up in the air! They left and I looked at him and said told you so!!! He just laughed! His sister carried us home and later that night I brought him over to get the truck!
That’s why Chevy was selling the crap out of their coil spring suspended (at both ends) 1/2 ton trucks in that time period, because Fords rode so good - NOT!
Billy Gildark It's not for the ride quality, and they don't. They stopped using twin I beam suspension on 1/2 ton 2WD trucks after the 1996 model year. 1997 1/2 ton trucks had a fully independent front suspension.
Ralfie bs sir... then why do I own a 2000 f250 7.3 diesel and a 2012 f250 6.2 gasser both 2wd both with twin I beams??? Please make me look stupid if I am!!!!
I once took a turn real fast back in 1991 . I went over a steep curb and screwed up my suspension on my 1970 ford ranger xlt . The wheels were waving around like a bowleg festival . The i beams were turned to pretzels . A passing motorist pointed at my front wheels to show his concern . I gave the thumbs up !
I can spot at least two for sure. But both have rifle racks. One has a rust or brown primer spot on the top of the passenger side cab. This is the truck that starts the chase scene. When she makes a left back onto the highway it is a different truck. The brown spot is gone and the front tires are wider. Note how when he takes over driving both headlights are intact. From this point either headlight (but never both) will be missing and then be intact. They must have repainted the front on one looks like they sprayed the amber parking lights yellow. Also, appears to be 3 on the tree and can hear him let clutch out so that also means it's a 6 cyl.
I noticed the same thing...they probably used the real sound of each truck they used and didn't put much thought into the problems with continuity. Still a badass sequence from the movie.
Can't beat twin I beam for this kind of high speed off road punishment. I've done high speed in dirt roads and A arm doesn't compare. LOVE THE VIDEO!!!!!
I've been wondering if someone at Ford has kept all their old ads somewhere safe, as it would be great to see a bunch of those dropped here on UA-cam one of these days...
Ford actually used clips for a truck commercial back then,it's on here. They did it with 2 trucks, one took a real beating and the other was lightly hammered on😅😅
love it when chases are not shot in sequence....saw this in theaters, remember the commercial...but anyone who thinks the stunt driver didnt beef up that suspension is nuts.
There's a bunch of rear drive Big cars taking a good beating as well. Mr.B would love to see this seen because its full of big cars and one outstanding old Ford pickup.
I agree, these trucks are the real deal. I bought a '67 F100 a few years ago after it was sitting on a ranch for literally years, original 45 year old engine with the few stock accessories, poured some gas in the carb, STARTED RIGHT UP.
I agree. These model years of Ford trucks, in my opinion, were the toughest they ever built. I've always wanted one in 3/4 ton with a 4 speed(extra low gear).
Ford used scenes from the movie in a very short lived commercial and stated it was a totally unmodified 1968 pickup. It seems that the lawyers decided that the performance was an implied warranty. (there was the "don't try this at home" disclaimer on the bottom) but that was not enough I guess. If you watch the closing scene in the movie, you will see the truck slightly "crabbing" as they did snap a rear leaf spring jumping the stock truck 30 feet in the air at ~40 mph. Still "Built Ford tough"
My buddy had a 72F250, mine a 75F150......both 2WD with 390s & stick shifts.........His 390 was mildly built, with nasty 32s' by 1250s on the back it would leave monster rooster-tails. The twin I-beam front had lots & lots of travel so you could do this sort of thing, keep the seatbelt tight so you wouldn't bounce your head off the headliner....LOTS of fun & they didn't break.
It's an amazing truck!!! It even heals itself!! At 7:12, look at the headlight on the drivers side, (it's replaced itself), and the smashed in front grille looks like new!!! Absolutely amazing truck!! They don't make them like this anymore!! :)
Ford actually made a TV spot using this chase scene to show how durable this truck was. Does anyone have this video? I recall it being pretty awesome back in the day...
silverbird58 My ‘16 f250 4wd does. Not really mine, my jobs truck. It actually has a 4wd stick you pull back and forth and manual locking hubs , and a rubber floor. Like the olden days. It’s shocking that it’s a real working slobs truck. Not sure about the newer trash.
Are today's Ford trucks as sturdy as the yellow trucks in the movie? Running on a rock and jumping off a cliff higher than a person's height will not break it. I was truly impressed!
My father owned a 76 ford, motor blew. He wrote a letter to ford motor company callin em out. They sent a new motor for free. He still had the truck when I was in high school. I once accidentally jumped a washed out bridge on the Navajo res. Oh shit I thought I was in for it. Truck had absolutely no damage. Lost my father a year ago, Thanks for the memories.
I love Ford trucks. I have a 66 F250. There are several bloopers such as the reappearing headlight and the self repairing bumper and grill. Awesome scenes though.
My grandpa on my Dad's side use to drive the same exact truck. He use to say "with the Ford truck, you can step on the gas and it would kick like a horse". He's gone but I have good memories of him always buying Ford trucks. I drive an 03' Ford Ranger and sometimes think about my Grandpa when he bought the original full-size Ranger pickup. I was raised up with Chevy trucks but I like Ford's too so I decided to own both brands.
"I did the research, they bought 16 trucks to film this movie, and sold 15 back to the dealer when it was done." Where did you find this bit of information?
Some people must not know that videos can be cut and edited. Smokey and the Bandit DID NOT USE the same Firebird through the whole movie, nor was the same truck used through this whole movie.
its a 1969 ford ranger camper special with a 390 motor and a dana 60 rear end and as for the front suspension is the original Bent I beam on of the toughest damn trucks ever i love my 1996
It's clearly got the Ford Twin I-beam suspension, not Chevy Suspension, it's also clearly an F-100 in the close-up views, though I agree that in some of the scenes it appears to have grown 16" or 16.5" wheels with the larger hub caps Ford used on the F-250 and F-350. I guess the real question is how many pale yellow Ford trucks were destroyed in this movie. Typical in most movies of this era for there to be for or five backup vehicles for the "hero" vehicle.
+69roadr Yes, otherwise genericly known as a swing axle. Simple, inexpensive, strong, but crappy geometry. I think the last vehicle in production for consumers to use that had a swing axle was the recently discontinued Ford Econoline van.
I'll take a poor geometry swing axle I Beam suspension any day that can take a real world beating like these trucks took and keep on ticking. If there's one thing Ford is good at, it's pickup trucks. Especially 50 years ago.
That whole scene was shot using only 1 truck (and although the scene is shown out of the original order of shooting) without needing to stop for repairs.
@seniorcat03 Yes, the "Twin I-Beam" is a brand name for Ford's version of a swing axle. I am refering to both the Twin I-Beam and the even more horrid 4WD "Twin Traction Beam" set-ups that are found on the '80s and '90s F150s, Rangers, Broncos, Bronco IIs, and earlier Explorers. These are all simple, relatively inexpensive and strong. They're a nightmare for the ride and handling engineers, though.
+MrBikeguy99 Yes, 2WD, but notice almost every shot has the truck going level or downhill with a reasonable amount of momentum. Still, it's an impressive chase scene.
There is supposed to be a Timex watch strapped to one of the bumpers. Remember the Timex watch commercial? But it’s moving too fast and I don’t have a slow motion feature to see if it’s actually there.
Just in this scene...I noticed a grey, black and then blue steering wheel color. So, I would at least say...they used three different trucks in this movie! Though, Im a Ford fan...these stunts would put a hurtin on any truck!

I totaled the Dodge two days later. The F100 lasted for years having the shit beaten out of it off road, lighter front end means no axles to break when it’s bouncing and jumping. He kicked the broken windshield out one day and drove around for a month before getting pulled over, 50$ fine back in those days, neither door would open so we would climb in and out through the windshield, we got some funny looks from people so that made for good laughs and stories later on. Miss that old thing
bbigjohnson069 I think it was early summer when we were cruising in the Ford.I picked up the ram charger out of impound because my buddy had some warrants out for his arrest and he was out late the night before and got it impounded,I wrecked his truck and then had to explain to him what happened when he was released from the cop shop. I said yeah! It went that way like a bat out of hell putting dust 50 feet up in the air!
They left and I looked at him and said told you so!!! He just laughed! His sister carried us home and later that night I brought him over to get the truck!
Built Ford Tough, RIP Charles Bronson.
Like watching the Dukes except the truck is yellow! Damn Twin I-Beam wont give up!
Love the truck. But I want that LTD convertible.
i think its not ltd its a mercury
It's a LTD. 1971
long tin dog
'72 convert!
1972, actually, but similar to the '71.
Man that Old Ford Truck was taking a really good beating. No wonder why it's Built Ford tough.
CJ Colvin
Which one was tough? They probably used a dozen of them to make that movie. Nobody’s truck would hold up to that.
@@ralfie8801 You know the 67 F250 and one surrvied the whole entire film.
They don't make trucks are movies like this anymore ..... Period
CJ Colvin
Yeah, the one they didn’t beat on too hard is the only one that survived.
, Ford's twin I beam suspension gives a smooth ride even on some bumpy roads.
😭⤵⏬🌅🎆🎉🐔😭
That’s why Chevy was selling the crap out of their coil spring suspended (at both ends) 1/2 ton trucks in that time period, because Fords rode so good - NOT!
Ralfie then why does ford still use twin I beams in 2wd all the way up to present day?
Billy Gildark
It's not for the ride quality, and they don't.
Only one truck used during filming, and still running to this day!
ive heard that was just one truck but it appears to be several
gumby hunter I believe it was two trucks.
One of them didn't have a gun rack.
I've had two old Ford's with v8s and 3 on the tree, one truck and one van.
I noticed the same thing...they probably used the real sound of each truck they used and didn't put much thought into the problems with continuity.
Still a badass sequence from the movie.
It is in the description of the video! "They beat the crap out of this 1968 Ford truck in the 1974 movie Mr. Majestyk"
Gotta love 70's action movies. Just the best.
DAMMIT LET HIM GET BACK TO HIS MELONS!
Oh, and when I find a woman that can drive like Nancy I will ask her to marry me.
And you would be a very, very, very lucky man. Unfortunately, I think Melon Man won't let you touch Nancy's melons.
Can't beat twin I beam for this kind of high speed off road punishment. I've done high speed in dirt roads and A arm doesn't compare.
LOVE THE VIDEO!!!!!
A Ford Truck Charles Bronson, Chuck Norris and Clint Eastwood
bbigjohnson069 ya old guys rule
Thank you for sharing your beautiful video with your friends Charles Bronson is very good in any movie he is great actor love him .
You're welcome.
Truck takes a beatin and keeps on rollin! One of my favorite chase scene in this movie! Rock on Charles Bronson! Thank you my friend. :)
yeah filmed in hills above Colorado springs a long way from Lahunta
I've been wondering if someone at Ford has kept all their old ads somewhere safe, as it would be great to see a bunch of those dropped here on UA-cam one of these days...
I like how you can easily kick the tailgate down, but it latches again when you close it.
That was a decent Ford commercial.
I'm nuts.
Anyone who has ever rode in the back of a truck will say that would have hurt pretty badly
Assuming anyone could pull off the miracle of not being ejected under these circumstances, you'd be in a body cast after the ride was over.
You can't kill a ford!
My dad & I built my first Ford Truck 68 3/4 ton - just like this one , 38 yrs ago . Its still my go to - get the job done truck 👍😁 🇺🇸
That’s how my dad drives just to go grab a coffee at Sheetz.
Jajajjajaja c mamo
This is how I drive when I have to take a sheet.
Thats how i drive when my colon is pushing maximum density.
I love how he just kicks the tailgate down!
Man did they beat the snot out of this truck! Definitely one of my favorite 70s movies... :)
I agree. These model years of Ford trucks, in my opinion, were the toughest they ever built. I've always wanted one in 3/4 ton with a 4 speed(extra low gear).
Ford trucks = LEGEND STATUS
A Ford Truck and Charles Bronson. How much tougher can you get?
Ford tough,nothing else like it.
I agree can't beat ford
Roger Hall This old truck can an outstanding beating than a modern truck can.
So was Charles Bronson!
Ford TRUCKS. I suspect there were at least three or four virtually identical Ford Trucks used in this movie.
Great commercial. I haven't been able to find it.
I remember that commercial.
Here is the link.
ua-cam.com/video/mAFKqkifqBM/v-deo.html
They dont make them like they use to.
The Raptor would of had a blown out transmission within a min of this video.
Andres Dow you're stupid the Ford F-150 Raptors are made for Baja racing
silverbird58
My ‘16 f250 4wd does.
Not really mine, my jobs truck.
It actually has a 4wd stick you pull back and forth and manual locking hubs , and a rubber floor.
Like the olden days.
It’s shocking that it’s a real working slobs truck.
Not sure about the newer trash.
Ralph Trujillo latest version has a much stronger frame also. $$$though.
70s trucks by ford were tough, todays trucks can barely handle a curb, thats a fact.
B.T.W 01 No software update needed, lol.
Legend has it that late at night you can still see the ghost of this truck and Charles Bronson jumping ravines in the desert
Wow! What a great first date! Bronson is da man!
Are today's Ford trucks as sturdy as the yellow trucks in the movie?
Running on a rock and jumping off a cliff higher than a person's height will not break it. I was truly impressed!
Today trucks are made of leaf
all fords are tough. proud ford man I am glad to be.
The best never rest!
I love Ford trucks. I have a 66 F250. There are several bloopers such as the reappearing headlight and the self repairing bumper and grill. Awesome scenes though.
and that's why you don't let your girl drive your ford😂😂
My grandpa on my Dad's side use to drive the same exact truck. He use to say "with the Ford truck, you can step on the gas and it would kick like a horse". He's gone but I have good memories of him always buying Ford trucks. I drive an 03' Ford Ranger and sometimes think about my Grandpa when he bought the original full-size Ranger pickup. I was raised up with Chevy trucks but I like Ford's too so I decided to own both brands.
Holy shit that stunt guy just sends it every time haha
Best Ford Truck commercial ever!! This is so much better than climbing the mountain of concrete blocks.
Ford always did make a good truck!
That F100 is one of the world’s greatest uncredited cast members.
FORD! FORD! FORD!
its a 1969 ford ranger camper special with a 390 motor and a dana 60 rear end and as for the front suspension is the original Bent I beam on of the toughest damn trucks ever i love my 1996
Life sure was cheap in the 70s, about 8 dead for some mellos
When you love watermelons as much as I do, it's worth it. 😄😄😄😄😄
Why are all these old videos suddenly showing up in my feed???
Maybe that's why I'm getting so many views and comments now.
Built Ford Tough!!!!
I've had 3. Drove them like this too. They never broke.
Guess I'm gonna have to borrow my buddies 67 F250 and see if it's really as tough as ford claimed. lol
It's a F-100 not a 250
It has a Chevorlet suspension underneath it.
You can see the wheels are the larger 16.5 that an F250 would have.
You can see in the many jumps that it is a Ford twin I-beam suspension.
What's with the Jonny Quest sound effects when the car goes over the cliff?
I LOVE TWIN I BEAM FRONT ENDS!!!
They love tires and death wobble
@@MitzvosGolem1 u mad?
@@silasmcgee3647 no I just bought a Chevy now...Best
mitzvah golem ew not if it’s made after 09 they’re cheap shit after 09
So what was he holding on to during all those jumps laying down on the back of the truck bed?
Nothing he is Charles Bronson he used his magnetic personality.
heavy balls of steel kept him down
twin I-beam suspension.
+69roadr Yes, otherwise genericly known as a swing axle. Simple, inexpensive, strong, but crappy geometry. I think the last vehicle in production for consumers to use that had a swing axle was the recently discontinued Ford Econoline van.
+snowrocket ford rangers used m too
F-250's and 350's still use Twin-I-Beams.
69roadr The Twin I Beam from suspension is tough as nails man.
Screw the truck, how the hell did he stay in the bed the whole time? That wasn't a Subaru brat
They called him Mr. Majestyk but they should have called him Mr. Magnetic !
That stunt man took a beating, for sure
@seniorcat03 Yes, the "Twin I-Beam" is a brand name for Ford's version of a swing axle. I am refering to both the Twin I-Beam and the even more horrid 4WD "Twin Traction Beam" set-ups that are found on the '80s and '90s F150s, Rangers, Broncos, Bronco IIs, and earlier Explorers. These are all simple, relatively inexpensive and strong. They're a nightmare for the ride and handling engineers, though.
had to stop making them roll over to eaze
all that with a 2wd
+MrBikeguy99 Yes, 2WD, but notice almost every shot has the truck going level or downhill with a reasonable amount of momentum. Still, it's an impressive chase scene.
There is supposed to be a Timex watch strapped to one of the bumpers. Remember the Timex watch commercial? But it’s moving too fast and I don’t have a slow motion feature to see if it’s actually there.
I never heard that one. "Timex watches, they take a licking and keep on ticking."
I'd rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy, Ram or GMC.
Just in this scene...I noticed a grey, black and then blue steering wheel color. So, I would at least say...they used three different trucks in this movie! Though, Im a Ford fan...these stunts would put a hurtin on any truck!
yes back in the days when Ford make a good truck that the piece of junk they making now
agree Dodge and gm makes better trucks now
David Garcia Not to mention that they're overpriced and complicated to work on as well.
Yes
All three of those cars I owned, during my college years. And the Ford truck was what I learned how to drive on.
Which three?
@@bbigjohnson069 The dark-colored Dodge Polara, the blue Ford Galaxie 500/LTD (mine was a four-door and battleship grey), and the Plymouth Fury, though mine was chocolate brown and a wagon. Yep, owned 'em during the mid-80s, and they got me to college and around town. One was sold, and the other two were run down to the point that they eventually got junked. But they were great to have, and kept me from car payments for a few years.
Yes!!! Charles Bronson!!!!!!
I did see a Ford ad where they used clips from this movie. The ad said that it had something like 40k miles and it was UNMODIFIED. Ford Tough indeed! Wish I could find the ad.
Bad ass truck!!
Presumably, the film company had more than one truck.Watching this, confirms it.
One did all the rough work and the other one didn't.
TRY THAT WITH A CHEVY LOL
Steve Schilling chevy would have exploded after the first jump
Mike CorLeoné ikr
I had a 64 Nova that we used to do the same thing with. We used to copy what they did with the General Lee on Dukes of Hazzard out in the back field.
The better thing to ask would be “try starting a chevy”.
I did. I'm still alive, and both trucks are still on the road. Different roads though. Can't do anything like that on newer trucks. Too heavy, too much plastic, too much junk that will break.
My buddy bought a 72 F 100 2 wheel drive for 400$ when we were in Alberta in the 80s, same day my other buddy bought a 74 Ramcharger, drove it all the way back to Vancouver Island with no insurance.
Why were you driving the Dodge? And was that during the winter with no windshield?
bbigjohnson069 I think it was early summer when we were cruising in the Ford.I picked up the ram charger out of impound because my buddy had some warrants out for his arrest and he was out late the night before and got it impounded,I wrecked his truck and then had to explain to him what happened when he was released from the cop shop. We sold it to an autowrecker for 250$ that very day, only lost 150$ on it,cest la vie😎
